A Bit o’ Bobbi and Gray Makes for a MAC Rainy Season: The $40 MAC Rainy Season Eye Shadow X 4 Quad

June 5th, 2013 by Karen 20 Comments

MAC Rainy Season Eye Shadow X 4
That’s MAC Rainy Season Eye Shadow X 4 ($40) on my eyes

Like a freak summer thunderstorm, MAC’s $40 Rainy Season Eye Shadow X4 quad might seem a little out of place this time of year, but it sure is practical. I’ll give it that.

Maybe it’s the combination of conservative cool and warm-toned grays, but there’s something very Bobbi Brown about it, I think.

The MAC Rainy Season Eye Shadow X 4…

And what the Rainy Season Eye Shadow X 4 quad might actually look like in the rain…

It’s hard to go wrong with shades like these. They’re useful — especially for soft cat eyes, mrrrow! — but useful doesn’t always set my world on fire, if you know what I mean.

Will I look back in five years, sigh wistfully with a tear in my eye and say something like, “Remember the Rainy Season quad from the MAC All About Orange collection? Gosh, that one sure rocked my world.”

Um…probably not.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t like it. I do.

Like it, that is.

MAC Rainy Season Eye Shadow X 4 Swatches
Swatches from the left: Rainy Season (a light warm gray frost with a Satin finish), Arctic Grey (a mid-toned gray with a Frost finish), Courtly Grey (a cool gray with a Matte finish) and Typographic (an asphalt black with a Matte 2 finish)

I get why it was included with the orange lip and cheek products in All About Orange, but…ya know. Fine.

All in all, I think it’s a proficient performer, like a sushi place that gets the job done, but you won’t go out of your way to find… If that makes any sense.

PRICE: $40
AVAILABILITY: Available now online, and coming June 6 to MAC counters and stores

Typographic is an interesting shade, but the other three don’t really excite me. I won’t be indulging on this one.

Typographic is probably my fave color from this quad. It smudges and blends quite well, and I like that it isn’t stark.

This quality of this quad doesn’t look bad, but I get what you mean. I am personally way more interested in the orange lipsticks than a gray eyeshadow quad!

I’m so spoiled by make up collections being so bright and interesting that this feels so meh.

I like the muted greys paired with orange. Love that shot of the quad “in the rain.”

Actually, I hate orange and I totally want this quad. I am all about some smoky grey eyes. I need to try it out and see how blendable the colors are.

      Hi Rachel,

They blend well. I did a gray smokey eye the other day with Typographic and Courtly Grey and liked it a lot. 🙂

Hmmm… If it’s only ‘fine’, I might just skip it and buy something like Retrospeck or Silver Birch (which is still in stock in a couple of places). Smoky eyes aren’t easy to do with my eye shape, so it seems like a lot of money to spend on something that’s not screaming at me to buy it. More money to spend on the lipsticks…

      It’s definitely useful, but I don’t know if it’s earth-shattering, you know?

What lipsticks do you have your eye on?

Haha I swear, every time I see pictures of this quad, I keep thinking that it’s a black and white photo! 😛 haha! Very pretty on you, though! I bet it’s perfect for those that love a good smokey eye!

Yes, definitely! I like to layer them over a black or gray pencil for a quick smoky eye. 🙂

I know a lot of people were bummed out that MAC didn’t make a flashy orange palette to match all the juicy lipsticks that came out with this collection, but I really enjoy the contrast between the two sets of colors. Your look that you have here looks so cool to me! I love the orange blush and lips paired with gray-toned eyes. I’m excited to get the stuff I ordered from this collection!

What did you order from the collection?

I really like this quad, but I probably won’t pick it up because it’s not something I would reach for often.

I can see the confusion in why the grey with the orange but the colors are nice, they just pale in comparison to the brights!

I like the contrast, too, even if it does remind me of Halloween!
