MAC Dazzleglass Creme in Do It Up: A HAWT Pink Lip

October 2nd, 2009 by Karen 26 Comments

I hope you’re having a great Friday, chicas!

How was your Thursday night? Mine was fairly chill. I got takeout Chinese food, played with some MAC lippies and watched Management on DVD. Have you seen it? Starring Steve Zahn and Jennifer Aniston? It flew under my radar when it came out earlier this year, but I liked it way more than I thought I would. I don’t think its Rottentomatoes score does it justice (46%).

I’ve been playing with a couple of the lip products from MAC’s recent DSquared and Dazzleglass Creme launches, and I think I’ve found a hawt new pink lip look.

What you need

  • A deep cool pink lip pencil like MAC Cremestick Liner in Pink Treat ($15)
  • A sheer, yet dark pink lip balm or lip conditioner like MAC DSquared Tinted Lip Conditioner in Fuchsia Fix ($15)
  • A shimmery blueish pink gloss like MAC Dazzleglass Creme in Do It Up ($18)
  • A lip brush like the MAC 316 Lip Brush ($20)

The MAC 214 Short Shader Brush: Small, but She Packs a Wallop!

October 2nd, 2009 by Karen 21 Comments

(Click here to see the video embedded in this post)

Let’s give a warm, makeup-lurvin’ welcome to the mini-mighty MAC 214 Short Shader Brush ($23), a tool re-released with the new Style Black collection. It’s my latest must-have MAC eye brush.

A total all-star, it gets precious shelf space beside the 217 Blending Brush and 266 Small Angle Brush.

The 214 may not look like much, but, among other things, she’s able to precisely blend and apply eyeshadows and liners along the upper and lower lash lines. The firm, dense natural bristles are really able to pack on the color, and the shape of the head — wide and flat — makes it maneuverable in tight spaces around the base of my lashes.

I love the sharp, precise lines I can make with it.

After lining my eyes with a pencil, liquid or gel liner, I’ll reach for the 214 and wet it with eye makeup remover. Then, I’ll gently run it along the edge of the liner.

CRISP!

While there are less expensive brushes out there, I think the 214’s a worthy tool. It’s just a great multi-tasking makeup brush.

britney-spears-hidden-fantasy

I owe it all to Britney…

It was her original Fantasy perfume that first got me excited about celebrity fragrances. I think it was around 2007, and I remember being totally *bedazzled* by the bottle.

To go out with a bang, today’s installment of 10 Days of Giveaways (the last in the current series) features another Britney fragrance with an equally bedazzling bottle.

The prize

One lucky lady will take home a bottle of Hidden Fantasy by Britney Spears (a $45 value).

Inside this bejeweled flacon lives a fruity floral with notes of orange, tangerine, lily, jasmine, clove, vanilla and sandalwood.

How to enter…

2ways2enterEntering is easy. There are two different ways, and you can do both of them for two chances to win.

First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post. In it, name one or more of your all-time favorite Britney songs.

Tough! It’s a toss up, I guess, between Toxic and Slave For You.

Follow me
Second, enter by following me on Twitter and retweeting (RT) the following message:

RT @karenmbb: RT to Win Hidden Fantasy Perfume by Britney Spears http://bit.ly/2E66Y1

Christina Applegate: Her Best Hair?

October 1st, 2009 by Karen 14 Comments

christina-applegate-hair-poll

Actress and breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate (born November 25, 1971) hit it big in the late-’80s, landing a role as the big-haired, ditzy Kelly Bundy on Married With Children.

Kelly B. made Christina famous, but it wasn’t her first TV gig. Her first was *starring* as an infant of three months old on the soap opera, Days of Our Lives. 🙂

It was her big break!

That role as “Baby” (LOL!) catapulted Christina into guest appearances on Charles in Charge, Silver Spoons and Family Ties.

When Married With Children finished filming after its successful 10-year run, Christina went on to star in movies, a Broadway musical (Sweet Charity) and a short-lived sitcom, Samantha Who?

I’ve always liked her comic timing (and that beautiful blonde hair!) and have followed her career for years. I was just as shocked as everyone to hear last August that she’d been diagnosed with breast cancer. Having a gene marker that indicated an aggressive form of the disease, she chose to undergo a double mastectomy.

Today, with her cancer in remission, she’s back at work, not only acting but also sharing her story with others.

Which of Christina's hairstyles do you like best?

Blogging for Breast Cancer

October 1st, 2009 by Karen 44 Comments

What Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

One night exactly one year ago — ironically this very month — El Hub and I were sitting in our small living room watching TV when the phone rang.

El Hub answered the call: “Hello?”

“Hi, my darling son,” said his mom.

“Hi, Mom,” he answered, and his eyes locked on me, his face a mask of worry.

It was a night just like any other, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned that that’s how these things usually are, these life-changing moments. One second everything’s fine — you’re watching America’s Best Dance Crew, doing your nails on the floor when BAM!

That night started my immediate family’s personal journey through breast cancer, which we’re still working our way through. Things happened fast right after the news — a barrage of tests, long talks with doctors about options, and you’re going along for the ride because the procedures get scheduled before the news has even had time to settle.

Didi, my mother-in-law, is classified as “in remission” now. She’s fine — well, not exactly fine, but she’s hanging in there. She had a double mastectomy shortly after receiving the news last year (first one, and then, two weeks later, the other) and four rounds of chemo. Now she’s dealing with less serious (than cancer) complications resulting from the chemotherapy, as well as the mental and emotional trauma of being basically housebound and afraid for 12 months.

I know it all sounds brutal to hear… The words come flooding out from time to time, but that’s another thing about life — it has a funny way of surprising you when you least expect it.

Every October, women around the world take time to remember friends and family and to increase breast cancer awareness. They promote the importance of early detection, help to raise funds for research and treatment and offer information and support to those affected by the disease.

For us, there is no more worthy cause than this one. Breast cancer targets us (women) at a rate 100 times greater than men.

Here’s a statistic that shocked me when I read it, but one in every eight US women will develop breast cancer… That means some of us, here.

So what are we going to do about it?

Answer: we’re going to stick together.

There are many ways to help and many worthy organizations. No one can possibly support them all, but I would still like to see if we here can raise $250 by the end of the month.

I’ll match your donations (up to $250), which means that if there’s $250 on the ChipIn widget below here, then we’ll have raised $500 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the organization I’m choosing for the donation.

About Susan G. Komen

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find a cure. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, the group has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill Nancy’s promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

How to Give?

How Much to Give?

Every dollar gets us closer to that $250, but there are other ways to help. One way is by commenting on this post about your experiences, thoughts or fears about breast cancer. Ask any questions you might have, and I’ll do my best to find the answer.

This month is about getting the word out there and about reminding each of us that we’re not alone, even if we’re miles apart.

Karen
