New in Beauty, Feb. 4: Givenchy Gets the Summertime Blues (and Greens), and L’Oreal Wants to Color Your Hair

February 4th, 2010 by Karen 37 Comments

New in Beauty

  • Is Givenchy channeling Avatar with these blues and greens for summer 2010 (click the images in the linked post to see larger snapshots)?
  • L’Oreal’s new INOA (Innovation No Ammonia) hair colorant supposedly smells … better.
  • Sephora Tonytail Wraps ($9): cute or FREAKY!?
  • Your thoughts on this braided headband ($10)?
  • My 30-something-year-old skin plans to have a *close encounter* with the “light-controlling spheres” in Peter Thomas Roth’s brush-on Illuminating High Definition Moisturizer ($48).
  • I’m sending these Harajuku Lovers Solid Fragrances ($18) to the head (hee hee!) of the class. 🙂
  • CUTE! I adore these little polka dotted Tweezerman tweezers ($15).
  • New at Sephora: Chloe perfume ($45-110).
  • If you love sheer lip colors, take a peek at Shiseido’s The Makeup Perfect Rouge lip tint ($25).
  • Philosophy’s Hope Springs Eternal Deep Sea Revitalizing Mask ($25) purifies and refreshes skin with more than 250 minerals.
  • WOW! Chantecaille’s Nano Gold Firming Treatment costs a whopping 290 bones! Now THAT’S a lot of tacos…
  • Purchase $55 in Estee Lauder at Neiman Marcus (in stores/online) through Feb. 7 and get a tote filled with EL beauty goodies (inc. a palette, lipstick and mascara).
  • It’s natural (99.8%) to like Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate ($42). 🙂
  • While supplies last, get this UBER-cute Milly for Clinique eight-piece gift set ($75 value) with your $25 Clinique purchase at Bloomingdale’s.
  • Have you ever tried Passport makeup? I’ve never heard of it before.
  • Don’t these L’Oreal Studio Secrets Color Correctors in Pink, Green and Apricot ($11 each) look a little like the Make Up For Ever HD Primers?
  • OOH! Now Urban Decay has a Primer Potion Duo ($26) in Original AND Sin.
  • Philosophy’s creamy Divine Illumination Love at First Light ($33) luminizer is supposed to brighten while smoothing lines and skin tone. My fingers are crossed!
  • Before applying my makeup, I want to try prepping my skin with Shu Uemura’s new UV Under Base Fluid SPF 20 ($30).
  • Urgh… I wasted spent too much time yesterday playing with this Chanel Valentine’s Day slot machine thing.
  • I’m digging the greens, golds and purples in the Kat Von D Memento Mori eyeshadow palette ($34).

Happy Thursday, ladies. Miracle of all miracles — we made it over the hump!

I hope you haven’t had to put out any fires so far. What are your plans for today? I’m looking forward to meeting my friend Christine for lunch in SF.

Tabs says “Mrrroooow,” which loosely translates to “Haaay, girl,” LOL!

Talk to you soon. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

WARNING: MAC Spring Colour Forecast Is Getting Harder to Resist

February 3rd, 2010 by Karen 85 Comments

At the MAC Spring Colour Forecast release party last night, I stole a few minutes of a friendly MAC artist’s time to talk about the new Blush Ombres ($25) and Crush Metal Stacked Pigments ($32).

He (Jack) suggested a few ways to get more bang for your Colour Forecast-ing bucks.

Blush Ombre

What’s the deal with the newest members of the MAC blush family? What sets them apart? Well, each of the four moderately pigmented pressed powder blushes is really a combination of buildable colors in the same pan, a gradient that moves from light to dark tones, with a finish about halfway between shimmer and matte.

Tips and tricks

  • To load a brush with a mix of tones from one of the pans, use a swirling action with a blush brush like the MAC 129.
  • The lighter tones in each pan make great highlighters. For a look that glows, apply it with a blush brush like the MAC 116 along the tops of your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose and on your temples.
  • The darker (ooh, scary!) side of each pan can be used for contouring. For definition, load an angled face brush like the MAC 168, and sweep beneath the apples of your cheeks. 🙂

Taking Neutral Lips for a New Spin with MAC Spring Colour Forecast

February 3rd, 2010 by Karen 30 Comments

With more than 40 precious pieces of eye, lip and face makeup spread out among its four different color-themed collections, the new MAC Spring Colour Forecast release overwhelmed me at first. There’s *a lot* in it to digest, and when you’re prone to frequent bouts of makeup-related stimulus overload (like moi), it can be a bit much.

To explore the collection, I’ve been trying to bite off little bits at a time, my own Mini Makeup Missions. 🙂

It’s the approach I took last night at the San Francisco MAC Pro Store release party for Colour Forecast. I knew I wouldn’t be able to get hands-on time with everything, so I concentrated on products I knew I could use for a simple look I’d wear pretty often, in this case a neutral lip look with a little twist.

Like a lotta ya’ll, I usually reach for peach, pink or beige lip colors when I want to wear something conservative on my lips — something like shimmery golden peach/pink MAC Nymphette gloss, which I’m still deeply in love with.

Last night, though, I wanted to find something still neutral-ish, but with a little spice to shake things up.

I think I found it in these two purple Lipglasses ($14 each): Lavender Wind (a sheer purple with blue and gold shimmer) and Purple Rage (a shimmery, deep golden plum).

The Bobbi Brown Cabana Corals Lip and Eye Palette

February 3rd, 2010 by Karen 21 Comments

Quick update for Bobbi Brown Cabana Corals collection fans! A lip and eye palette joins the lip and cheek products I mentioned earlier, and this one’s available exclusively at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman stores.

It clocks in at $60, but you do get six eyeshadows, four lippies and two miniature brushes for that price.

Not a bad deal, all told.

First impressions? In my case, I like the lipsticks, but I LOOOVE the eyeshadows. I can see them workin’ overtime through spring and into summer.

What do you think?
