You Just Might Fall in Love with Kat Von D’s True Romance Palette in Ludwig

June 19th, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

Written by Ashwini

Today the enchanting Ashwini of Clearly Beautiful shares her hard rock love affair with Kat Von D’s True Romance Palette in Ludwig.

Of all the eyeshadow palettes in my makeup collection, there’s one I regularly reach for, whether I’m getting ready for a night out or a professional conference. This versatile gem’s the Kat Von D True Romance Eyeshadow Palette in Ludwig ($34).

I adore the darkly romantic rose pattern on the top of the packaging, and the palette itself is slim enough to always bring along on trips.

For $36, you get eight well-chosen colors that are unique in their own right, but also complementary at the same time. It’s mixing and matching for dummies! — and as you can see my palette’s been well-loved:

Whether I’m creating a sultry smokey look, a daytime soft brown, or dabbing a last minute swipe of highlighter on my browbones, I’m never disappointed by maestro Ludwig!

Each of the colors is velvety smooth and richly pigmented. Plus, they don’t leave any fallout behind, and with a base like Urban Decay Primer Potion, the shades stay put on my lids all day long without any creasing or migrating at all.

Below are swatches of the first four colors, which I can see combining for a dramatic green smokey eye:

Jonathan Green Rootine Dry Shampoo: A Brush with Cleanliness

June 19th, 2010 by Karen 27 Comments

jonathan green rootine dry shampoo

Dang, Jonathan, where you been all my life? I wish I’d had Jonathan Green Rootine Dry Shampoo Brush-On Hair Powder ($19) with me on my last few trips because it would have saved two things: 1) time and 2) space in my luggage.

What’s a dry shampoo? Seriously, they’re liked sliced bread, or remote controls. They temporarily take the place, in a matter of speaking, of regular shampoo and usually come as absorbent powders in jars or aerosol cans. The powders refresh the scalp, add volume to the roots and extend blow-outs by absorbing oil and product buildup. When I don’t want to shower (it happens) or don’t have time for a regular shampoo/conditioning with water, dry shampoos come in quite handy!

Available in three shades — Light (for blonde, white or gray hair), Dark (black, brown or red hair) and Black (for black hair) — Green Rootine Dry Shampoo doesn’t contain any synthetic compounds, parabens or petrochemicals, and it’s also fragrance-free and safe for color-treated hair.

Saturday Surfing

June 19th, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

It’s already after noon… I wonder how that happened.

So how was your Friday night? Did you do anything fun? I stayed in, fried up some Trader Joe’s chicken chow mein for din din and rented Dear John on iTunes. Oh, yeah, I nearly burst at the seams from excitement. ‘Twas almost too much to bear (ha ha)!

Dear John turned out to be a nice surprise. I wasn’t expecting much beforehand, I mean, with Channing Tatum in a serious role. Boy is FOINE, but he ain’t exactly Toby MG when it comes to acting, ya know?

I thought he and Amanda Seyfried had pretty good on-screen chemistry, though, and it wasn’t a completely typical soundtrack-driven romance. There was some depth to the characters, and I gotta give props to the director, Lasse Hallstrom, too, because of how well it’s filmed (same guy who did Chocolat and An Unfinished Life).

All I want to do this afternoon is relax… If I have it in me later I may go for a walk, but even that may take more effort than I care to exert. I’ve been feeling kinda tired and run down since Wednesday.

Tabs is here with me. He says, “mrow.” He’s watching an episode of True Blood right now and is convinced he’s a vampire. He keeps gesturing with his paw to his fangs, like, “See! See!”

Before I join him on the couch, you wanna catch a few waves together first?

Nina Ricci Le Paradis de Nina: Gossamer Wings on a Sweet Summer Breeze

June 18th, 2010 by Karen 9 Comments

nina ricci le paradis de nina

Mandarin peels and apple candy, anyone? If you like soft, sweet scents as much as I do, swing by Macy’s when you get a chance to sniff Nina Ricci’s latest limited edition elixir, Le Paradis de Nina ($55, 1.7 fl oz).

Delicate, with a scent that unfolds like origami, this fruity floral eau de toilette feels a little less citrusy than the original Nina by Nina Ricci fragrance, exhibiting notes of gardenia, sandalwood and vanilla.

What Do You Think of Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencils?

June 18th, 2010 by Karen 31 Comments

nyx jumbo eye pencils review
The new Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil summer shades! From left: Purple Velvet, Pure Gold, Rocky Mountain Green, Electric Blue

The weekend is just around the corner, huzzah! I’m so looking forward to just vegging out on the couch, re-watching season two of True Blood and playing with makeup. Do you have any plans yet? Whatever you end up doing, I hope it also involves a fun look or two. 😉

Speaking o’ beauty bits, what do ya think of the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils ($4)? Have you seen them before?

These four particular colors are new for summer, but the pencils themselves have been around for a while. Drugstore makeup line Nyx designed them to double as eyeliners or eyeshadows. The chubby pencils have quite a cult following these days, thanks to their smooth formula and technicolor pigmentation; with the addition of these four new shades — Pure Gold, Electric Blue, Purple Velvet and Rocky Mountain Green — they come in 28 total colors.

They’re available now in drugstores and online at nyxcosmetics.com.
