Tarte Puttin’ on the Glitz Is Great in a Clutch

November 8th, 2011 by Karen 53 Comments

Indecisiveness doesn’t go well with Tarte’s new holiday kit. Nope, the $48 Puttin’ on the Glitz kit comes with three interchangeable palettes, but you can only fit one of them in the cute silver clutch at a time.

Hmm…

Being a fiend for accessories, my pulse jumped when I heard about this clever limited edition cutie and its 18 powder eyeshadows, highlighter, bronzer and lipgloss. To make it easier to tote the products around (but not all at the same time), Tarte included the clutch, which incorporates a mirror for touch-ups and slots for bills and credit cards. There’s also a tutorial booklet with pretty helpful directions for three different looks.

Nails Will Sparkle Like a Disco Ball Wearing Deborah Lippmann’s Holiday 2011 Collection

November 8th, 2011 by Karen 25 Comments

lippmann holiday 2011

Not even strobe lights could compete with the glare from the glitterific shades in Deborah Lippmann’s latest collection of nail lacquers. I hope you’re ready to pump up the jam, love, because this disco ball’s droppin’, haaay! It’s time to hit the dance floor with Deborah’s holiday collection. 🙂

This ode to sparkle and shine, available now, contains six separate nail polishes, four limited edition and two permanent shades ($16-18 each), and the $42 three-piece Get This Party Started set (with full-size bottles).

Today my nails took four of the individual polishes and the entire Get This Party Started set out for a joy ride. With their fun flecks of glitter and rich metallic finishes, these colors are just begging to be worn on a dance floor.

Deborah Lippmann Nail Polishes for Holiday 2011 ($16-18 each)

Shimmery red Do Ya Think I’m Sexy, glittery gold Shake Your Groove Thing, glittery graphite I Love the Nightlife and iridescently glittery Stairway to Heaven catch and reflect so much light that I think I was almost hypnotized!

Having a clear formula should make these limited edition shades (Stairway to Heaven’s base appears slightly milky) great for layering with other polishes, perhaps atop a base of shiny red, silver, gold or gunmetal gray, but I think they sparkle just as well when worn alone.

Set aside at least 30 minutes for these, though, if you want to cover your nails entirely with glitter as it may take five or six coats to get a good distribution (on account of the clear formula/base).
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A-

Get This Party Started Set ($42)

My favorite part of the collection. 🙂 It comes with three full-size bottles — Deborah’s famous Happy Birthday shade (a mutli-colored glitter in a clear base), and two new riffs on the shade.

The first, Candy Shop, is Happy Birthday in a sheer pink base. The second one, Forget You, combines Happy Birthday with a sheer black base. I love both the contrast between the small and large pieces glitter in all three of these, and how it gives the group of them extra dimension. I also just like how fun these colors feel. We’re talking light rays and disco balls here.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A+

Here are swatches of four of the individual shades and all three polishes in Get This Party Started. In each of these, I’m wearing two layers (without a base or top coat).

Becca Mineral Blush in Wild Honey Creates Sweet Cheeks That Never Go Out of Style

November 8th, 2011 by Karen 18 Comments

It was a dark and stormy night…

Wait — no it wasn’t. Not even close. It was actually a Lost Weekend earlier this fall, and matte Becca Mineral Blush in Wild Honey ($32) was there.

The sweet cheeks this pigmented peachy nude powder blush creates are always in style, but they feel like they hail from a kinder, gentler time, a time when afternoons meant studying at the library after school, and your cheeks would flush at a smile from your crush or a single word like, “Hi.”

Weird Stuff on Menus, Vol. 1

November 8th, 2011 by Karen 20 Comments

I went to a Vietnamese restaurant for pho (noodle soup) last weekend and saw this “vegetarian” item on the menu. They also had a vegetarian beef soup, too. 🙂

It reminds me of my mom; when I come home to visit she’ll make me what she calls veggie versions of my favorite Filipino dishes, which almost always have chicken!

The Sheer, Shiny Glosses in the New Glossed Over PureOptic Lipgloss Collection Are a Work of Tarte

November 7th, 2011 by Karen 34 Comments

tarte glossed over limited edition pureoptic lipgloss collection (1)

Rich holiday reds are so much fun, but sometimes I wanna get low…maintenance with my lip color. 🙂

On days like that, I like sets like these. The eight glosses in Tarte’s new $29 limited edition Glossed Over PureOptic Lipgloss Collection make sheer, shiny lip looks as easy as 1-2-3.

Available exclusively at QVC.com, the set includes eight 0.04-oz. travel-size PureOptic Glosses (the full-size 0.14-oz. ones cost $21 each) in Nectar, Nude, Pink Blush, Coral, Warm Pink, Nude Pink, Mauve and Berry.

Ironically, Tarte describes these as pigmented and rich on their website, but on my lips, all eight shades? Not so vivid. Even the brightest one here, Coral, looks rather sheer to me, and increasingly so as I smack my lips a few times.

The glosses are what I affectionately refer to as “clickers,” because twisting the bottom of the tube makes a rewarding “click-click-click” sound and dispenses the product through the applicator brush.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Eyeshadow in Phloof!

November 7th, 2011 by Karen 30 Comments

mac phloof eyeshadow (4)

Officially, MAC’s moniker for today’s Unsung Hero is “Phloof!” ($15, exclamation mark included), but because of this eyeshadow’s uncanny ability to brighten tired eyes, I think it looks more like a “POOF!” instead.

As for how we met, credit for that goes to my pal, Amara (thanks, girl!).

It was an early morning last spring after Amara and I had gone out to a late dinner the night before. While I looked like a zombie extra on the set of The Walking Dead, she, on the other hand, looked wide awake, glowing and totally refreshed. I couldn’t believe my eyes!

But as tired as I was that day, at least I had the good sense to ask Amara what she was wearing.

Her answer: “PHLOOF! And it’s magic.”

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Nov. 7

November 7th, 2011 by Karen 71 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 193. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Determined and fiercely optimistic!

  3. What’s one of the first things you do every morning?
  4. Fix myself something warm to drink, and most of the time lately it’s been plain green tea — no milk, honey or sugar. I’m programmed to power up with those first few sips.

  5. What scent are you wearing? Today?
  6. Elie Saab Le Perfume. So graceful, fresh and feminine.

  7. What’s one thing on your to-do list for today?
  8. To run five miles after work this afternoon. Well, if everything goes according to plan.

  9. One of the weirdest gifts you’ve ever received?
  10. Hmm… Where to start? Okay, how about with Vaseline? Most of the strangest gifts I’ve ever received have been from my parents. Like last year, my mom gave me an entire Costco-sized case of Vaseline moisturizing body lotion in huge 24-oz. bottles. It totaled up to something like 200 ounces. I mean who really needs that much lotion?! 🙂

And for each of the past five Christmases they’ve given El Hub smoked salmon, we think because he said at their house once, “I like smoked salmon.” So now we have an entire shelf dedicated to smoked salmon in the kitchen.

My mom also likes to give me pajamas…and they’re always the wrong size.

  11. Do you remember when you first started using the Internet regularly?
  12. I sure do, and it was way back in the days of dial-up modems and AOL CDs. I remember being at my BFF’s house over Christmas break one year in the early 90s and her showing me how to use the AOL chat rooms. I’ll never forget that “EEE-err-OOOOOO… You’ve got mail!” LOL! Wow, that was a long time ago…

  13. The zombies are coming! What do you do to prepare?
  14. First, Tabs. I’d give Tabs one last can of gravy and hopefully, if there’s time, let him make biscuits on my tum. Of course, this is assuming that the zombies are still a few hours away. If they’re already at the front door, I’d take one long, last look into his eyes, whisper that I love him, and set him free into the hills behind our condo.

It would break my heart to let him go, but I think his chances would probably be better in the hills than they would be with us on the highways with zombies hot on our heels. He doesn’t deal well with stress. Although he’s lived indoors for the past few years, I’d hope that the instincts he once had as a kitten living on the mean streets of Mill Valley would keep him safe.

  15. What’s your go-to food for stress eating/relief?
  16. It varies. Sometimes it’s fro-yo, or Mango Bars, Nutella, cheese puffs, sliced fruit or sliced fruit served with Nutella. Other times, it’s something salty, like fries, chips, popcorn. It depends. I’m open to variety when it comes to stress eating.

  17. What do you like to do when you’re stuck at home with a cold?
  18. Watch the first two Godfather movies, drink plenty of fluids, and throw in a little bit of Blue Crush on the side.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. To keep chipping away at my weight-loss goal (five more pounds to go!), to do at least 10 minutes of free writing every morning, to try and make myself a few yummy salads for lunches during the week, and to spend some time taking pictures of the outdoors.

OOH! So I have a new tea obsession. When I was at Target last weekend getting some snacks for my parent’s visit, I picked up a tea from Celestial Seasonings called Decaf Sweet Coconut That Chai ($3 for a pack with 20 bags).

Delicious!

Don’t get me wrong — I love caffeine, but I’ve found that if I have some after noon, I get the jitters. I like this decaf version (with a dash of milk and sugar) just as much as the regular one.

Here, why don’t I fix you a cup while you fill out the Monday Poll? 🙂

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. What’s one of the first things you do every morning?
3. What scent are you wearing?
4. What’s one thing on your to-do list for today?
5. One of the weirdest gifts you’ve ever received?
6. Do you remember when you first started using the Internet regularly
7. The zombies are coming! What do you do to prepare?
8. What’s your go-to food for stress eating/relief?
9. What do you like to do when you’re stuck at home with a cold?
10. Weekly goals:

We’re gonna rock this week, my friend! There’s simply no doubt.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
