MAC Unsung Heroes: Modesty Cremesheen Lipstick

April 2nd, 2012 by Karen 38 Comments

I know that for some folks, especially ones who aren’t as fanatical about interested in makeup as you and I, it’s surprising to find wearable lip colors in MAC’s permanent line.

At lunch with my BFF Cindy a couple months ago, when I pulled out nude pink Modesty Cremesheen Lipstick ($14.50) to touch up after the meal, Cindy was shocked when I told her the lippie was from MAC.

Cindy, a makeup minimalist (to the extreme!), had an impression of MAC that many people share. She doesn’t wear makeup very often (the last time I saw her wearing eyeliner was at my wedding six years ago), but she has cruised by MAC counters many times before, and seeing the glammed-up artists there, always just assumed MAC only carried crazy colors.

No matter how many times I’ve tried to set her straight, gah! I swear, if I had a nickle for every time I’ve told that girl that MAC isn’t only about brights… But she doesn’t listen, probably because we’ve known each other for more than 20 years (she’s like the sister I never had), so she tunes me out when I go into makeup mode…or talk about Tabs. 🙂

She did show an interest in MAC Modesty, though, which is great! — because I think it’s one of those eminently agreeable lip colors that every gal should try.

Benefit to Release Rare Beauty, a New Makeup Set Inspired by Snow White & the Huntsman

April 2nd, 2012 by Karen 26 Comments

Benefit Cosmetics Snow White & The Huntsman
Image via Collider

Benefit CosmeticsExciting news, Benefit babes (and fairy tale lovers)! This spring, Benefit and Universal Films partner up on a limited edition makeup set inspired by the upcoming movie.

Rare Beauty ($45), meet Snow White & the Huntsman. 🙂

The film, which hits theaters June 1 and stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as evil Queen Ravenna, looks like Grimm for grownups to me, and I like the spooky new look.

Benefit products also appear on the actors in the film, as they are the movie’s exclusive beauty partner.

More details (and product pics) coming soon, but from what I’m gathering through the grapevine, the set will include makeup to recreate Snow White’s super black lashes, flushed cheeks and milky skin.

Rare Beauty, a set inspired by Kristen’s look in the film, arrives in stores, boutiques and counters this May, but die-hard Bene-babes don’t have to wait that long. It will officially launch online on April 17 at benefitcosmetics.com.

I saw the movie trailer in the theater before The Hunger Games last week, and it looks pretty darn great! It even got El Hub’s attention.

Poor guy will indubitably have to put up with me whispering random Benefit makeup tidbits through the movie when we see it, like, “I think they used High Beam on Kristen’s upper cheek bones in that shot…” and, “I bet Charlize is rocking Hoola right there.” LOL!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 213

April 2nd, 2012 by Karen 45 Comments

the makeup and beauty blog monday poll

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
Hyper! I just downed a huge cup of coffee and my brain feels like it’s moving at light speed and I can’t use punctuation because it’ll slow me down and I just hope I can stay focused enough to take advantage of this huge surge of energy!
  2. A piece of clothing in your closet that you’ve kept, even though it doesn’t fit?
A cute pair of pinstriped gray-and-white Bebe pants that I’ve had since around 1999 because I think, “If I had a pound of Crisco, four hours and a miracle, maybe, just maybe…”

I think they’ve gone out and come back into style at least twice over that time.

  3. Do you sleep on your back, tummy or side?
    Yes. 🙂

LOL! But mostly my back, which is both comfortable for me and convenient for Tabs. It lets him fall asleep on my chest, and then spring off my exposed belly at 5 in the morning.

Ah, the things we do for our pets…

  4. Game of Thrones moment! If your house had an official sigil/seal, what would it be?
A chunky gray tabby with a low-hanging belly.
  5. Did you ever have a sticker (or other kind of) collection? If you did, do you remember what happened to it?
I had a sticker collection, but I have no idea what happened to it. I remember seeing it at my parents’ house about 10 years ago, but then it disappeared.

I think they may have thrown it out and just don’t want to admit it… I had some really great stickers in there, too! My scratch-and-sniff and Lisa Frank collections were epic. EPIC!

  6. What’s your commute like?
Now? It’s not bad (about 40 feet), but I’ve had some doozies involving boats, buses and even trains that took me more than an hour to get to work.

One of the drawbacks of my current commute is that it’s tough to maintain boundaries, since I live and work (and share a room with my kitty employer) in the same building. I often snap pictures and sit at the computer at all hours of the day and night.

  7. One small thing that brings you joy?
Pulling up to a parking meter and finding leftover time on the clock… Love that!
  8. What’s your favorite month and why?
June, because it’s when my brother and I have our birthdays. Plus, it’s the summer gateway month.
  9. Last drugstore beauty product that you really, really loved?
Sonia Kashuk’s A Powerful Punch Nail Kit. I loved (and still do) the summery colors and tiny bottles. That green shade? Making Waves? That one’s my favorite.
  10. Weekly goals:
To make appointments to see a dentist and an optometrist, to run five miles on the treadmill twice, to eat more fruit than I did last week (because I’ve been slacking on the fiber front lately), to go through the piles of paperwork on my desk (and the surrounding floor), and to try to stay on task.

Hey, hey, Monday! 🙂 So. Game of Thrones. Did you watch…? I quite enjoyed the season premiere, although I had to keep telling myself not to get attached to any of the characters. I keep hoping/wanting good things for Arya Stark and Jon Snow.

And speaking of GOT, I asked Tabs last night how he felt about us adopting a dire wolf. Unsurprisingly, he hated the idea.

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. A piece of clothing in your closet that you’ve kept, even though it doesn’t fit?
3. Do you sleep on your back, tummy or side?
4. Game of Thrones
moment! If your house had an official sigil/seal, what would it be?
5. Did you ever have a sticker (or other kind of) collection?
6. What’s your commute like?
7. A small thing that brings you joy?
8. What’s your favorite month and why?
9. Last drugstore beauty product that you loved?
10. Weekly goals:

April has the makings of a great month for us all. I say we turn this mutha out!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Tabs for the Urban Decay Gravy Dispenser

Just a quick hello before TV time (hello!). 🙂 Tabs and I are about to curl up on the couch to watch the new Game of Thrones, and we’re both pretty excited about it, too, because he actually scored a cameo. Yup, he’s “Alley Cat No. 3” in the season premiere.

Isn’t that cool? He’s been wanting to make the jump to cable television (he’s trying out for Mad Men next), but don’t worry — even if his acting career takes off, he won’t give up modeling; he loves it too much.

This week Tabs had kitty modeling jobs for a few pretty big beauty brands, like Aveda, Urban Decay, MAC, Becca and Physicians Formula.

Here are the latest pics from his portfolio…

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

Today is always one of my favorite days of the year. 🙂 First, for April Fools (like me), and second, because it means we’ve left the last of the winter months behind. No more March! From now on, at least for a while, it’s all about spring and summer, and what could be better than that?

A few beauty posts that caught my eye…

  • A dazzling driver’s license makeup look — Kandee Johnson
  • A pretty look with a pretty amazing $5 palette (Wet n’ Wild Comfort Zone) — Mostly Sunny
  • Tabs wants a feline fur equivalent of the J.Lo glow, something like this but for cats — Bergdorf Goodman Blog
  • I love that Tia Williams is back to blogging! — Shake Your Beauty
  • I don’t know if it’s these pretty swatches or the lacquers themselves, but now I’m craving BYS Nail Polishes — Nihrida
  • The Sephora + Pantone Colletion Collector’s Edition set makes me want to start collecting tangerines — My Weekend Ramblings
  • Slow motion ballet makes everything better — simoniannelli on YouTube
  • What a trip! B+W nails all the way — The Nailasaurus
  • I like this easy video breakdown of a bold spring lip look — Bellasugar
  • Nail & Art and food (Refinery29)? Or how about eyeshadow and burgers (Bellasugar)?

Hark! A freelance makeup artist on the outskirts of town near the borderlands reported seeing something very disturbing this week… She was tending to her flock of clients one sunny afternoon in a field of wildflowers, when all of a sudden she heard a buzzing sound. Slowly, the sound grew louder, and louder, and louder still! — until it was all she and her clients could hear.

Terrified, they turned their faces up toward the sky, their eyes feverishly seeking out the source of the sound, and then they saw it, approaching from the horizon. So vast that it blotted out the sun as it grew nearer. A swarm!

She and the others were lucky to escape with their lives that day…and their BB cream.

BB Bees

Makeup and Beauty Blog Makeup MonsterDescription: Created by a deranged entomologist-turned-cosmetics scientist, BB Bees generally behave like their smaller honey-loving cousins. Although many times larger (growing to a length of about 5 feet), they spend their days searching for food, except in their case it’s not pollen they crave. It’s BB cream, also known as blemish balm, which they collect, sometimes from living victims, with their hind legs for transport back to the hive.
