Have You Ever Lost Your Makeup Bag or Had It Stolen?

July 3rd, 2013 by Karen 38 Comments

MAC Illustrated Bag by Indie 184
A makeup bag that I hope never gets lost or stolen, the MAC Illustrated Bag by Indie 184

I’ve lost loads of makeup and had plenty of individual pieces go MIA over the years. I’m sure Tabs has something to do with it some of the time, because he likes to bat things around into nooks and crannies under dressers, beds and into the hidden corners of closets, but as far as losing an entire makeup bag, not yet (*knocks on wood*).

Not sure if this counts, but once a long time ago a makeup order I made online arrived looking like someone somewhere between where it started its journey and got to me went through the entire package picking out their favorites! BOO!

I have heard nightmare stories from friends who’ve had their makeup bags stolen. I ran into a buddy at Sephora a while back who was there buying makeup because her car had been broken into while she was out hiking, and the crook took her fully stocked makeup bag.

She was like, “I can understand why they wanted the wallet, but used blush and lipstick? That’s just cold.”

Have you ever lost your makeup bag or had it stolen?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy hump day. 🙂

DAILY PHOTO: To Me, From Me

July 3rd, 2013 by Karen 7 Comments

I needed a pick-me-up the other day, so I decided to bring home a bouquet of freesia flowers.

They smell so good!

Do you ever get yourself flowers just because? I have to remember to do it more often…

Those Kardashian sisters are certainly entrepreneurial. I’ll give ’em that.

Here’s a gloss from their new Khroma Beauty makeup line, available now at Ulta and CVS.

Khroma Beauty Honey Stick Lipgloss in Orange Blossom Honey ($9)

  • Has a non-sticky, thin texture and formula
  • Smells and tastes like honey
  • Only lasts about an hour on my lips
  • Comes with a doe-foot applicator
  • Very sheer
  • Quite hydrating

Not bad for $9. Have you tried anything from the line?

7 Lip Combos With MAC Tropical Taboo’s Calypso Beat Cremesheen Glass

July 2nd, 2013 by Karen 16 Comments

MAC Calypso Beat Cremehseen and Midnight Mambo Mineralize Rich Lipstick
Wearing MAC Calypso Beat Cremehseen and Midnight Mambo Mineralize Rich Lipstick on my lips

Calypso Beat Cremesheen Glass, part of the new MAC Tropical Taboo collection, and I have been glued at the hip — or rather, the lips — since last week.

It started as a red hot affair, but definitely no one night stand. Now I’m in it for the long haul…or until the next peachy nude gloss comes along (whichever comes first).

Calypso Beat isn’t just beautiful on its own. I also think it’s great for layering with other lip products, and I’ve been trying it with some combos, mixing and matching with the Mineralize Rich Lipsticks and Lip Pencils from the same Tropical Taboo collection (just for fun).

I stumbled on a few lip looks that I really like…

A MAC Tropical Taboo Face of the Day and a Katy Cat Moment

July 2nd, 2013 by Karen 25 Comments

My makeup today features pieces from MAC Tropical Taboo (with a smattering of products from MAC’s permanent collection)

I know I’m a few years late on this train, but I am super obsessed with Katy Perry at the moment.

I mean, I’ve always liked her music, and she seems pretty cool (girl loves cats!). I can’t even begin to guess how many miles I’ve logged listening to Teenage Dream on the treadmill, and how can you not like someone with blue hair who rocks out on stage next to a giant, person-sized cat??

But last weekend I Netflixed a documentary about her called Katy Perry: Part of Me that follows her 2011 Teenage Dream tour (and her breakup with Russell Brand), and that sort of tipped the scales for me from casual fan to full-blown obsession.

First of all, she’s a crazy cat lady, and you know I’m feelin’ that. 🙂 Throughout the movie, I kept thinking, “Awww, I bet she misses her kitties!”

Then there’s her music. Before the movie, I’d only heard her hits on the radio, but she performs a bunch of her other songs in the documentary (and her hits), and I liked them all. I think it’s cool that she writes her own music! How many pop stars actually do that these days? I ended up buying the rest of the Teenage Dream album after the movie.

Some of her songs are sugary cotton candy, like Peacock, which I was listening to when I got the idea to do this iridescent gold/brown/purple eye with the new MAC Tropical Taboo collection…

I wanna see yo’ Peacock!

What Beauty Maintenance Do You Tend To Neglect?

July 2nd, 2013 by Karen 30 Comments

Call me Sasquatch…

Is it nails? Waxing? Getting your hair did?

Me, I tend to neglect shaving, but only in the winter. If nobody’s going to see my shins or my ‘pits, I figure I might as well use the extra fur to keep warm, haha!

In the summer, different story. I’m on it like abs on Ryan Phillippe. I’m like a Terminator when it comes to hair removal, and I absolutely, positively WILL NOT STOP until I’m de-fuzzed.

Um…let’s see. What else?

Toe paint. Yes, I’m guilty of letting pedicures go a week or two (or three) past their prime. In fact, I have a pretty chippy one right now that needs some tending, le sigh…

I’m also not always great about getting my hair cut on a regularly basis.

It’s weird. When I had it short (chin-length) back in the early 2000s, I got it cut at least once a month, because the moment I felt it creeping at the back of my neck, I’d go crazy!

But now that it’s longer, I can easily let it go a month or sometimes two. I just throw it in a ponytail or a low bun and forget about it. For me, having long hair is lower maintenance than having it short.

Gimme the deets, sweets. Tell me a bit about your beauty routines. What beauty maintenance do you tend to neglect?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

In the event you were worried that there weren’t enough puzzles out there for cat ladies, I assure you, there are. 🙂

Tabs would like you to please note the abundance of striped tabby cats in these pictures.

Of course, my favorite is the marmalade disco ball party cat…

Hello, he’s wearing a jaunty cap!

DAILY PHOTO: A Lovely, Lazy Afternoon

July 2nd, 2013 by Karen 9 Comments

I love the highlights and shadows on these leaves…

Just a few things I did on my Sunday afternoon. 🙂

Enjoyed a free outdoor concert…

Watched a couple cut a rug…

Rocked out in my seat…

Ate my favorite salad IN THE WORLD, the tostada salad with grilled shrimp and avocado from Blue Barn in Marin…

And had a Blood Orange San Pellegrino for the first time (SO GOOD!).
