Try This Tip for Bangin’ Brows

February 20th, 2014 by Karen 20 Comments

Where my brows at?!

“It’s complicated.”

My relationship with my brows. It’s complicated. I’ve been growing them out for what seems like millennia (but has only been about a year).

They’re just so damned moody! Moody little brows.

Weeks will pass without so much as a peep out of them — no dramatic diva outbursts whatsoever. I’ll go about my days filling them in with eyeshadow or a brow pencil and be done in the blink of a fuzzy caterpillar’s eye.

Until…

They turn against me and become totally uncooperative.

It’s weird…and it usually happens overnight, like the follicles all had a meeting while I slept and voted to revolt.

All of a sudden, they all have their own little ideas and refuse to lay down correctly, and I start feeling like I have to use more product than usual to get them to behave. Consequently, I end up unintentionally crossing that invisible line that separates bold brows from Groucho Marx.

Told ya. Complicated.

Seriously, though, if your brows consistently behave, cherish it. You’re lucky.

Mine have been going through one of their spells… The outer tail areas (the sides closer to my ears) have been particularly ill-tempered lately, and I just haven’t been able to get them to look as crisp or defined as I like with my usual slate of products, so I’ve been brainstorming possible solutions.

And I think I found one…

MAC Brun Eye Shadow (left) and Dipdown Fluidline (right)
MAC Brun Eye Shadow (left) and Dipdown Fluidline (right)

Instead of filling in each entire brow with a single product, I’ve been using a combination of two — a powder eyeshadow and a matte gel liner.

First, I fill in the inside half of both brows with a dark brown eyeshadow (usually MAC Brun) using an angled brush.

Applying MAC Brun to the inner portion of my brows with an angled brush

Then, I quickly clean my angled brush by wiping it across a paper towel, and use it to fill in the outer half with a matte gel liner. I’ve been using MAC Fluidline in Dipdown for this, a dark brown with a flat matte finish.

Filling the outer tail with MAC Dipdown Fluidline

The result? Brows that start softly defined closer to my nose but get progressively darker and crisper and more defined as they move out toward my ears. Natural, yet bold, and not Groucho Marx, LOL!

Naturally bold brows, yo!

Next Time You’re at the Mall and Need Makeup in a Pinch, There’s the New Forever 21 Premium Cosmetics Line

February 20th, 2014 by Karen 28 Comments

Forever 21 Premium Cosmetics Review
Wearing a few things from the new Forever 21 Premium Cosmetics line

Have you heard the mall word? Forever 21 has a new Premium Cosmetics makeup line, and errr-thing in it is $18 or less.

Forever 21 Premium Cosmetics
Packaging for the new Forever 21 Premium Cosmetics line…

Exciting stuff, right? But after trying a few things from the line, I gotta say…I feel the same way about most of these pieces as I do when I see cute clothes in Forever 21 stores. I’m drawn in by the prices and how cute the clothes look from afar, but then I try some things on, and I’m like, “Eh, OK.”

Not to say that I haven’t found some winners in the new line. I have. I mean, if I ever lost my makeup bag on a trip and walked by a Forever 21 store at the mall, I know I’d be able to find something in there to get through the day.

I just don’t know if I’d seek out a Forever 21 store specifically for these new products — at least the few I’ve tried.

Here are some thoughts on five pieces from the line…

Forever 21 Premium Cosmetics Baked Bronzer ($4.80)

Like Goldilocks said when she tried the first bowl of porridge, “this one’s too hot!”

Or something like that. Too shimmery, in this case. I feel like this peachy golden bronze is a little too shimmery to use as a traditional bronzer. For contouring and adding warmth, I think it’s a tad too shiny, at least for me, but as a highlighter on the upper cheekbones, it’s, to quote Tony the Tiger, “Greaaaat!”

A little like a MAC MSF but harder, and not as silky smooth, it has very fine micro-shimmer, and the powder sits nicely on the skin.

Baked Bronzer ($4.80)

Frosted Eye Shadow in Sapphire ($7.80)

This blackened blue shimmery shadow avoids drama. Soft and silky, it easily buffs and blends, and the tiny flecks of glitter make it look muy expensive. I like…

Frosted Eye Shadow in Sapphire ($7.80)

Gel Eyeliner in Black ($8.80)

More like a grayish black than a true midnight, at least on my NC42 skin. I need several layers (from 4-5) to reach full opacity.

That’s kind of a pain…but the liner doesn’t smear or transfer into my crease, which is a plus.

A Cream Blush Crush in the Making: The New Multi-Blush Cream Blushes by Clarins

February 20th, 2014 by Karen 12 Comments

If you fiendishly covet the Chanel Le Blush Creme de Chanel cream blushes ($38 each), you just may love these new cream blushes by Clarins ($30 each).

They have a similarly satiny, natural-looking finish, comparably kick-@ss wear time (6-8 hours!), and I think they’re just as easy to apply and blend, whether atop bare skin or foundation.

I’ve been wearing them on top of NARS Radiant Cream Compact Foundation a lot lately for fresh-faced cheeks. 🙂

To apply them, I’ll use either a skunk brush or fingers, and both work well. But FYI — if you do use a brush, be prepared to bust out your heavy duty brush cleanser later, because these creams really cling to brush fibers.

For cleaning these and other brushes, I like Dr. Bronner’s All-One Magic Soap. It always gets my brushes squeaky clean.

All four of these shades are part of the new Clarins Opalescence spring collection, blooming now on Clarins counters and online for $30 each.

These New Katy Perry Lashes in Feline Fierce Are Fanning the Fringes of Feline Ferocity

February 20th, 2014 by Karen 18 Comments

Katy Perry Lashes in Feline Fierce
The new Katy Perry Eylure Lashes in Feline Fierce ($6.99)

I’m feline pretty fierce in these new false lashes by Katy Perry.

What…? Too pun-ny?

Sorry, couldn’t resist. I had to go there. 🙂

Truth be told, I wanted to try these mostly because K.P. is one my favorite cat ladies, and I think she and Tabs would get along swimmingly.

As far as cats go, he’s quite the charmer…

Sexy time!

I wonder if Feline Fierce, one of four new styles recently released in Katy Perry’s Eylure Lash line, was a shout-out to like-minded kitty enthusiasts like me.

Whatever it was, it worked! It definitely captivated this particular CCL.

Katy Perry Lashes Feline Fierce
Here kitty, kitty…

For starters, I like how the outer sections of lashes are longer and denser than the inner ones. I think it makes my eyes look a little longer and more lifted and mmmmrrrooow! that much more feline. 🙂 Especially when worn with jazzier eyeshadow looks.

Constantly Craving…

February 19th, 2014 by Karen 26 Comments

#truth: It’s not as easy to find real-deal Asian food up here in Marin County as it is in San Francisco or the East Bay.

For the most part, the prevailing word is bland. Not bad, necessarily, but not the stuff you dream about at night.

Every once in a while, though, I stumble on something really good.

Like this place I went to last weekend with El Hub, Yu Shang Pho in San Rafael. Ooooh, gurl! — I can’t stop thinking about that bowl of soup…

The broth, OMG! The broth… It was So. Damn. Good! I don’t have the most refined palette in the world, but with this soup (I ordered the chicken broth without the meat), even I could taste the layers.

I’ve been totally craving a bowl all week.

If you’re ever out this way and get a craving for a good bowl of pho, check out Yu Shang Pho in San Rafael. It’s triple F-caliber food: flavorful, fast and friendly service.

The Cool New Hues in the Clarins Vibrant Light Eye Quartet Mineral Palette Love Warm Skin Tones, Too

February 19th, 2014 by Karen 26 Comments

Clarins Vibrant Light Eye Quartet Mineral Palette
Wearing the new limited edition Clarins Vibrant Light Eye Quartet Mineral Palette ($42) on my lids

Well, well. Quelle surprise!

I really did not expect the cool-toned plum, pink, gray and white shadows in the new Clarins Vibrant Light Eye Quartet Mineral Palette to get along at all with warm-toned skin like mine, but then what do I know? I also didn’t think that watching Bravo every day for a month would turn my brain to curdled cheese, which it has, haha!

I guess if there’s a lesson here, it’s that you just never know when it comes to eye quads or reality television.

That is, unless we’re talking about The Millionaire Matchmaker, in which case you pretty much do know what’s going to go down, but you (I) keep watching anyway because you (I) can’t look away. 🙂

(Incidentally, does anyone else miss Dustin and Rachel? I think the show is pretty lame without them…)

Vibrant Light. One of 14 pieces in the new Opalescent spring 2014 collection. Cool-toned, fo’ sho’, but surprisingly wearable, even on warm-toned skin.

On my lashes I’m wearing Katy Perry by Eylure Lashes in Feline Fierce

Par for the Clarins course, these shadows perform exceptionally well, blending without a hitch and lasting a full 8-hour day without exhibiting any fallout, and only the slightest fading. They can be worn wet or dry, too (I’m wearing them dry).

I’m also wearing the Clarins Multi-Blush Cream Blushes in Peach and Grenadine on my cheeks, and Clarins Joli Rouge Lipstick in Tropical Pink and Lip Gloss in Coral Tulips on my lips, all of which are part of the new Opalescence spring 2014 collection

Sometimes You Just Need a Little Chanel

February 19th, 2014 by Karen 19 Comments

The Nordstrom over at the Village at Corte Madera mall recently revamped their beauty department, and by “recently,” I mean that it looks like they put the finishing touches on it in the last few days.

Now it’s set up with rows of shelves like a Sephora, which seems like a good idea to me. All of the products are easily accessible, and I saw several women trying things on while I was there.

The new Chanel section is HUGE! I swooned a li’l bit when I saw it because the testers were virtually untouched.

Imagine hundreds and hundreds of untouched, un-swatched pans…

‘Twas glorious! 🙂

Magical Pixies Promise Sparkling Nails This Spring Thanks to the Zoya Magical Pixie Collection

February 19th, 2014 by Karen 13 Comments

Zoya Magical Pixie Spring 2014 collection
The new three-piece Zoya Magical Pixie Spring 2014 collection

The new PixieDust polishes in Zoya’s Magical Pixie collection sparkle like Ryan Gosling’s pearly whites on the red carpet, *zing!*

Hexagonal flecks of iridescent goodness combine with finer flecks of shimmer to create a dazzling effect more powerful than the gravitational pull of J. Lo’s butt.

You have no choice but to stare…

Ain’t no party like a glitter party, so of course I had to go there. 🙂 And this glitter does not mess around.

I think Zoya’s regular PixieDust formula is pretty flashy on its own, but the addition of extra hex pieces here takes it to the next level. Totally worthy of a bacchanalian bachelorette par-taaaaay in Vegas, or perhaps a cat fight on Real Housewives of Atlanta.

Rosy Lux, silver Cosmo and blue Vega are all full coverage, and Zoya recommends 2-3 coats on clean nails (no base coat needed), although, I bet if you could get away with a single layer if you were in a hurry.

For each of these swatches below, I used two… Force of habit, ya know?

Zoya Vega
Vega, a cool-toned shimmery textured blue (two coats)

I love the way cool-toned blue Vega, my favorite of the bunch, shimmers… It takes me back to when El Hub and I had just started dating.

We’d visit his family in Hawaii over the holidays, and I’d wake up early in the mornings to sneak in a pre-dawn surf session. Vega glimmers just like those teal blue waters sparkled as the sun came up.

Zoya Lux
Lux, a cool-toned textured glittery pink (two coats)

Can you see the purple pieces of glitter in cool-toned pink Lux (my second favorite one)? I think they give it a dainty, feminine touch.

Zoya Cosmo
