Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 526

May 28th, 2018 by Karen 10 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. ?

1. What’s something you need help with right now?

If we’re talking big picture, then I really need help decluttering my house. First, I need someone to check me when I’m straightening things out and remind me that I can/should get rid of more stuff, because I’m a pack rat at heart. I’m also 1) sentimental, and 2) I always think I’m going to need “the thing” someday down the road, like one day I’ll just exclaim, “Oh! Where the heck did I put that Saucony shoe box?”

Short term help: breakfast. I wish someone (*ahem* Tabs) would make me a yummy, healthy Memorial Day breakfast.

2. What’s your outlook on lotion and moisturizing in general?

It’s absolutely. Essential.

If I don’t moisturize every inch of my body at least once per day, I will turn into this:

3. What’s your idea of a perfect Tuesday night?

OK, let me take you through it. El Hub gets home early from work, and we go to Taco Tuesday at Mi Pueblo Taqueria.

It’s always a good, easy time. It’s casual, simple, tasty and divine. We grab some tacos, have a couple beers, the baby devours her plate of beans and rice without fussing. Then, afterwards, we drive to Sephora and El Hub watches Connor while I browse for 20 uninterrupted minutes. Lastly, before heading home, we hit up See’s for chocolate.

Ah… That’s my dream Tuesday night. Oh, and hello! — I almost forgot the most important part. We go to bed at 9. 🙂

Taco Tuesday
Taco. Tuesday.

4. You won a $5,000 shopping spree to the store of your choice! What store and why that one?

Hmm… This is a tough one, because I wanna say Pottery Barn, because I need furniture, but what furniture can you really get from Pottery Barn for $5K?? Maybe two big pieces, if you’re lucky?

So I’ll go with Pier1, because when they have deep discounts on floor models, which is almost all the time, you can get some cute things at pretty good prices. Last time I went I saw a nine-drawer bedroom dresser on sale for $300, marked down from $900!

5. Quick: think of a happy memory. What was it?

Don’t laugh, but I almost cried when I found out that TJ’s had brought back their Rose Oil Ultra Moisturizing Hand Cream. ? I felt pure joy, LOL! I really did do a little happy dance in the middle of the store.

Happy Memorial Day

What’s the plan, Stan? When should we come over for the BARBECUE!? 🙂 I’ll bring my corn ? salad, which was a big hit at the family barbecue yesterday.

I’m just sayin’… It’s REALLY good.

Have a great day, whatever you’re up to.

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 503

May 27th, 2018 by Karen 5 Comments

As you know, cats have been strong supporters of the U.S. Armed Forces since before the American Revolution, providing logistical “lurvy” support to service members, veterans and their families, as well as providing volunteer pest control on bases and naval vessels.

This year, to show his support, Tabs designed and commissioned a special commemorative Memorial Day cat collar, which he wanted to model… ?

Saturday Surfing, May 26th, 2018

May 26th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

jcrew brixton

Happy Caturday, fabulous! ? I hope you slept well. If I haven’t thanked you for the encouragement in the pre-pregnancy clothes post a few weeks ago, thank you very much! Your suggestions were very helpful. I really, really needed the push.

I actually *finally* got some bottoms that fit me properly, and I’ve come to the realization that I’m now a better fit for “curvy” pants, not just because of how my body changed since the baby, but also because I’ve been doing lots of squats since last year, so I have more muscle on my booty and thighs. ‘Tis a good — no, a GREAT — thing!

So, I am now the happy owner of a pair of these J. Crew shorts, which just happen to be on killer sale at the moment using promo code GETAWAY.

The High-rise denim short in Brixton wash, originally $79.50, are on sale for $42 through May 28. The denim feels soft and structured, and they’re short-but-not-too short.

I already love ’em. In fact, I’m finally ditching the two pairs of ill-fitting denim booty shorts I’ve worn for the last two summers.

j crew scallop shorts

Before the sale ends in a couple days, I also want to grab a pair of these cute 3″ olive shorts with a scalloped hem (cute touch!). They’re $32 with the same GETAWAY code, down from $59.50.

I figure, the olive is neutral, so they should go with most everything.

Thank you again for the encouragement. Now, onward to today’s Saturday Surfing…

  • You might notice something a little different now when you go shopping for beauty products at big department stores like Nordstrom and Saks. To lure more shoppers…many of the big stores are phasing out traditional single-brand counters and replacing them with a more Sephora-like open floor plan, with more and more products from under-the-radar brands.

It’s kinda like if someone were to drop a giant SpaceNK into a Nordies.

  • Sephora will soon offer new classes for transgender folks wanting to learn more about makeup. Their 90-minute “Bold Beauty for the Transgender Community” classes start in June and will cover makeup products and application techniques. Cool!

  • I really hope that Meghan Markle’s royal wedding makeup will start a trend toward more approachable makeup looks, and this author thinks it’s going to have long-term effects on the scene.

“Despite the seeming simplicity of Markle’s makeup,” Cheryl Wischhover writes, “it might be poised to have a radical effect on beauty trends. In the world of makeup right now, the two most popular trends fall on opposite and extreme ends of an aesthetic continuum. On one end, you have what is known in Instagram makeup vernacular as ‘glam.’ On the other, there is ‘no-makeup makeup.’ Markle came down clearly on the ‘no-makeup makeup’ side. It’s a big deal that she made such a statement publicly because the beauty world is at a tipping point, with the push and pull of more versus less makeup bubbling up in pop culture.”

  • I want to check out all 15 of these makeup brands, all of which are made for deeper skintones *and* owned by women of color.

OK, someone’s coffee needs a refill! ☕☺️ Have a great rest of your day and a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Let me know what you’re up to.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

When You Go Out for the First Time in, Like, Years…

May 25th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

I peered into my dusty closet this morning because tomorrow night I’m going out for the first time in a billion years! I very quickly realized that the tiny sub-section that had, at one time in my life, been reserved for “going out clothes,” has disappeared.

Poof!

I don’t know when it disappeared or where it went, but it’s gone. So I don’t know what I’m going to wear, which appears to be a recurring theme in my life these days…

My friends Naaman, Cindy and I are getting together tomorrow night to go out dancing, which we used to do together all the time back in the day (we even took hip-hop dance classes together). Most of the time it was to some little hole-in-the-wall place that played really good music, and we’d dance our butts off for hours and just sweat. It. Out.

It was like our version of SoulCycle before SoulCycle was a thing, except with a $5 cover charge and free glasses of water at the bar.

I never wore anything too fancy or scandalous. I usually wore cargo pants (cringes) or Adidas track pants — basically, baggy pants, a tank top and a pair of shell-toe shoes.

So, like one of the background dancers in this Mariah Carey video…

I wish I knew where all those cargo pants went… They’re gone, baby, gone! I half-jokingly texted the crew to say that I’d probably end up wearing what I wear to spin class, but now that I think about it…black high-waisted leggings and my Prince tee sound like a legit option.

Maybe if I add hoops, my “weekend errands” Sauncony tennies and a faux-leather jacket, I can make it look purposeful? I dunno… I’m really NOT that concerned, but it’s just funny to me that I used to have a part of my closet dedicated to Saturday night adventures, and now I have a section dedicated to black and gray tops that conceal cat fur well.

As for the makeup…girl, you know I got that covered. ? Because I expect to be sweating for hours, and the room will be dark, I’m not even gonna put in that much effort. Just sweat-proof versions of the basics.

Skin Care I’ve Been Testing Lately: Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner, Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion WetForce SPF 50+, and Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil

May 25th, 2018 by Karen 21 Comments

fresh deep hydration rose facial toner

I’ve been so gun-shy about putting new skin care on my face since my breakout in January. I haven’t wanted to upset the apple cart, but you know how it is… You’re going along, doop-da-doo, and your skin is happy ? for a while, but then it starts acting up in a certain way, and you think, Maybe there’s something new out there that I have to try.

This is a pattern I repeat over and over, LOL! My big things at the moment are 1) that my skin’s been super dry, and 2) that I’ve been looking for a new sunscreen.

Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner ($44)

Yup, I’ve been on a rose-scented kick (thank you, Trader Joe)… Can I call this $44 hydrating rose toner life-changing? I’ve only been using it for a couple weeks, so probably not quite yet, but I really dig the scent, which is deliciously rosy but not headache-inducing, and I love seeing the rose petals flit about inside the bottle.

“Tone down pores. Tone up hydration. Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner is a cleansing toner that removes impurities and refines the appearance of pores for a deeply hydrated, healthy-looking, velvety soft complexion. Infused with real rose petals, the gentle formula clears the skin of surface debris, pollution particles, and residual impurities, while leaving it feeling refreshed and prepped for the skincare ritual that follows. It also contains rosewater and rose flower oil to help soothe and nourish the skin, while angelica leaf extract and hyaluronic acid help to retain moisture.”

— sephora.com

Also, I swear that I can hear my cheeks and the corners of my mouth (which have been Sahara-caliber dry as of late) sigh with relief after I use it… Too bad it’s quite expensive.

❤️❤️❤️ 3 out of 5 hearts.

KARL LAGERFELD + MODELCO Kiss Me Karl Choupette Eyeshadow Palette in Smokey/Burgundy

May 24th, 2018 by Karen 14 Comments

Mrrreeeeow, Choupette!

OK, I realize that this is technically one of the items in Uncle Karl’s latest collab collection, but let’s get real — I’m only here for Choupette. ?

KARL LAGERFELD + MODELCO Kiss Me Karl Choupette Eyeshadow Palette in Smokey/Burgundy (Nordstrom exclusive)

($65, 0.48-oz. palette with 16 powder eyeshadows)

Can you say “no” to a cat-shaped palette?

I DIDN’T THINK SO.

See, that’s why you’re a card-carrying member of Team Cat Lady, and Choupette’s looking extra cute here with her heart-shaped nose and her “K” collar.

Today’s product check in: A look at the @karllagerfeld + @modelco_cosmetics new limited edition makeup line. It’s at @nordstrom l! #karllagerfeld #modelco

Color-wise, I really like the cool-toned browns in this palette, which is one of two palettes in the collection (the other one, Warm/Nude, leans warmer), and the abundance of mattes, and how almost all of the eyeshadows, with the exception of the glittery burgundy, are soft and buttery enough to practically scoop themselves with a brush or finger.

Here’s what I don’t care for: how the mattes handle my fine lines. Mind you, my kitten-hood was many moons ago, but still. I’m not a senior kitty yet.

Despite being creamy soft, the powders have large grains that draw mucho attention to my lines.

Of the Beauty Products in Your Makeup Bag, Which Do You Use the Most, and Which Do You Use the Least?

May 24th, 2018 by Karen 31 Comments

I call these my “non-negotiables,” and I go through them faster than everything else: concealer, mascara, brow pencil/gel, black or brown liner for tightlining, and bronzer.

Lip balm, nude lipsticks and glosses are up there, too, as are face tint, powder, blush and neutral (mostly beige and brown) eyeshadows, to a lesser degree.

OK…from the look of it, I’m using everything in my bag pretty regularly, LOL! 🙂

But I swear, there are things in there that I like to have with me, but I hardly ever touch, like lip liner, liquid liner, gel liner, and deeper lipsticks and glosses (dark browns, purples, burgundies, reds).

I haven’t been wearing highlighter at all lately, but I go through phases with it. Sometimes I’ll go theret… I think it’s fun to transform yourself into a version you don’t see daily, but it’s not one of the first things I’d grab if I were rushing out the door because it isn’t forgiving.

On that note, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been pressed for time and thought, “Sure, I can pull off black liquid liner, no problem.”

In those situations, though, it’s never a good idea, LOL! With liquid liner, whatever can go wrong, will go wrong IMO, so best not chance it when rushing.

So I ask you, of all the beauty products in your makeup bag, which do you use the most, and which do you use the least? Inquiring minds want to know.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Too Faced Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation: What a Nice Surprise From Too Faced!

May 23rd, 2018 by Karen 17 Comments

too faced peach perfect foundation review
Good stuff!

Whoopity-whoop-whoop with a side of whoooooop! You guys…Too Faced Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation is SO GOOD. If you like less-is-best makeup, also known as “Meghan Markle Style,” check it out. (Side note: I’d never been so into a royal wedding before. I LOVED MM’s minimal makeup wedding look.)

Too Faced Peach Perfect Comfort Matte Foundation ($36 for a 1.6-oz. tube, available in 20 shades)

The pump and lightweight tube = travel friendly. This medium-coverage foundation has a satin finish, and it’s a cinch to apply. A 3/4 pump is enough for me, and I just blend it with fingers. Sometimes I set it with powder; sometimes I don’t.

Swatches: Cocoa, Toffee, Mahogany, Chestnut, Mocha, Butterscotch, Honey, Warm Sand, Sand and Warm Beige
too faced peach perfect foundation swatches 1
Swatches: Natural Beige, Light Beige, Golden Beige, Warm Nude, Nude, Vanilla, Porcelain, Almond, Snow and Swan

I flat-out love this stuff! It makes my skin look like a supernatural version of itself. I feel like I just stepped off a page in a magazine.

“Peach Perfect is infused with refreshing peach and sweet fig cream in Too Faced’s exclusive comfort matte long-wearing formula. This is the modern way to wear matte foundation — photo friendly, smooth, flawless, and comfortable with a soft-focus, velvety finish.”

— sephora.com

It does a little of everything — blurs pores, evens out your skin tone (but still lets your freckles show if you sheer it out), controls oil, and it lasts 10+ hours for me.

too faced peach perfect golden beige
Warm Beige is the closest shade to my skin tone (I’m an NC42 in MAC), although it’s a little too dark for me…so I’ve been adding a couple drops of Golden Beige. This is the foundation looking as fresh as can be after eight (!) hours (I set it the morning with a transparent loose powder).
