Givenchy Sari Spring 2009 Face of the Day: Orange You Glad It’s Almost Spring?

January 31st, 2009 by Karen 39 Comments

Givenchy’s new Sari collection takes bold Bollywood glamor and blends it with sheer shades for spring.

Yesterday, I wore some of Sari’s apricots and oranges, daydreaming about spring. I went for a look with bright lips and sheer eyes, and now I can’t wait for warmer weather to wear these colors with a white cotton dress, gold baubles and dark brown strappy sandals, ooh! 🙂

Here’s a breakdown of the steps I took with my look…

A subtle brown and orange eye with black eyeliner

I start with Precious Sari Glittering Eyeshadow in Maharani Gold, a liquid eyeshadow with small flecks of gold glitter suspended in a clear gel. It gives the eyes a shimmery gold base.

To apply, I sweep Maharani Gold onto the eyelid with the included doe-foot applicator, and then use my finger to spread it around evenly. It dries fast, so I make sure to bust a move and do this quickly!

Next, I add a subtle smokiness to the eyes by drawing a thick black line on the upper lash line with Magic Kajal Liner in Magic Black.

Magic Kajal Liner is an emollient and highly pigmented pencil liner. It’s easy to smudge and ideal for layering beneath power eyeshadows for smokey looks.

I then line both the upper and lower water lines with Magic Kajal. It smudges like crazy and tends to migrate onto the skin beneath the lower lashes after I apply it on the waterline. Because I want to keep the liner on the lower lash line looking sharp and crisp, I grab a Q-Tip soaked in Lancome Bi-Facil, and then clean up any smudged liner before moving onto the next step.

Almost done! Now for a few colors from the Prismissime Compact Powder in Maharani Apricots.

Using a MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush, I pat the center color (a shimmery golden brown) from Maharani Apricots directly on top of Magic Kajal on the upper lash line, drawing the color up into the crease.

Prismissime Compact Powder in Maharani Apricots contains nine mini-pans of sheer orange, brown and beige powders. Swirl a blush brush over the entire pan to mix the powders if you want to apply it combined color as a blush or highlighter. Or, use an eye brush to apply the colors separately.

To finish the eyes, I add some color into the crease by sweeping a matte orange brown shade (the color in the lower right-hand corner of the Maharani Apricots palette) into the crease with a MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush.

That completes the eyes. 🙂

Glowy, orange cheeks and bold coral lips

The cheeks and lips are just as easy.

I start by applying Sari Glow Iridescent Blush in Maharani Orange with a MAC 129 Powder/Blush Brush. Like most of the products in this release, the blush applies super sheer, so it takes three to four layers.

Last but not least, I finish with a layer of Rouge Interdit in Maharani Henna on the lips.

A few things to consider

With the exception of the Magic Kajal liner and Maharani Henna lipstick, all of the stuff I used yesterday has sheer color payoff.

If you’re looking for a bigger *WOW*, you could try layering the products with other brown, gold and orange eyeshadows or blushes.

A few to consider: MAC Soft Brown matte eyeshadow, MAC Woodwinked eyeshadow, MAC Mulch eyeshadow, MAC Sunbasque blush, Shu Uemura M Brown 73 blush or Benefit Coralista blush.

If you have a sensitive nose, Sari’s powders and lipsticks have a light floral scent. It fades quickly, though.

Orange and blue look great on you. I assume Maharani Apricots is ment to be used with all the squares at once? The squares look a bit small to be used singly. I did not know Alice Cooper is from Arizona. I do know that he is/soon to be 61. Talk about musical longevity!

That blush looks like it would be a nice highlight as well with its gold shimmery-ness. I am surprised how good those colors looked on your skin tone. Even the bright coral-y lipstick looks HOT.

    You look fantastic.
I’m not sure if the makeup will be my thing though as it’s sheer. I’m not really that patient to do three layers in order for the colour to show up…

the colors are beautiful, but for the price, I would rather have products that are a bit more pigmented – in my opinion, I’d rather have a pigmented product I can apply lightly if I choose, than the other way around. And the kohl pencil looks and sounds way too soft to be practical. I think that real kohl is supposed to be that way, so maybe it is authentic, but too messy. I don’t want to have to check my liner every 20 minutes.

Still, the colors and packaging are gorgeous!

    Hi Rae,

Sure! Are you a smudgy liner fan? I like smudgy liners for the lid, but not so much for the waterline.

    Hi Tekoa,

Yah, you can do it either way. I will try it as a blush next. 🙂

Isn’t it kind of mind blowing to find out that he’s from ARIZONA? I always assumed that he just miraculously sprouted out of the River Styx or something.

Oh — he owns a pub in Phoenix called . I want to go some day, ha!

The packaging is soo pretty, but for that price I’d be definitely disappointed with the pigmentation of the shadows and blush. all of the eyeshadow colours look very similar too, i like a bit of variety in palettes.

Karen this collection looks awesome! I don’t know if you ever take requests however I just saw Big Bang Illusion Glosses from Lipstick Queen and was very intrigued. This is what the advert says: The futuristic formula uses small particles of shimmer to blur out lines and give your lips the ILLUSION of fuller voluptuous lips.
I would love to have you review this product if at all possible. The color showing looked beautiful. The mailing was from A Beautiful Life. We were shopping last night and scored one of those great cat pole thingies that look like a tree with the center hollow and platforms off every which way and little holes over each platform. My four cats are going crazy! They usually are $300 and up so I never thought we would find one for them we could budget. Big Lots rules at just a little over $100!
Have a great week and hope you can review the new glosses from Lipstick Queen.

The look as a whole looks great on you! I think I’m going to pass on this collection. I like my products to be a little more pigmented. I recently purchased BB’s sparkly eyeshadow in Sunrise and was a bit dissapointed in the sheerness. It is really pretty though and I think next time I use it I’ll just apply a more pigmented eyeshadow first. You gave me a good idea when you mentioned Woodwinked and I think that’s the one I’ll it try with it.

    Hi Nadrah,

    Thank you!

It’s definitely some of the sheerest makeup I’ve tried. The textures are great, though…

As for the palette I think it’s originally supposed to be used as a blush/highlighter. I wanted to use a powder to set the kohl so I did some improv. 🙂

    Anyhoo, have a good Monday!

I am going into SF on Friday so if I have time I’ll do my best to stop by the Lipstick Queen counter.

That’s a great deal that you got on that cat climber thingy! I would love to find one for Tabs for that great price. Do all your kitties climb on it at once at go nuts?

Thank you Karen, I’ll watch to see if you make it to LQ ! Yes, 3 of them do and have a grand time. I have one guy named Giblet (we found him at Thanksgiving)who is still feral even tho we have had him for six years who won’t join in. He will allow is to feed him & give him a roof but that’s all. The tree is in out living room for now as it’s just so pretty and we can watch their antics. Will most likely move it to a quieter area so he can play too! Right now my lap baby, who is attached to me like glue has claimed it as his place. His name is Road Kill(I know, sounds awful) as that was what he would have been if we had not found him. He was just a tiny little baby we found in the middle of our street(tail broken)on snowy winter evening. He is getting to be a cranky old man these days and throws tantrum’s if I’m not setting in my chair with him in my lap. He will follow me around and try to trip me and growls if I ignore him,LOL! I’m hoping the new tree will give me a break!
Have a wonderful week Karen and look forward to your next reviews.
