Like Butter, These Bargain Glosses Make Everything Better: The $5 NYX Butter Glosses

February 13th, 2013 by Karen 23 Comments

NYX Butter Gloss Peaches and Cream
Wearing NYX Butter Gloss in Peaches and Cream ($5), one of 12 new Butter Glosses for spring 2013

Just in case you were wondering, if you wear one of the new $5 NYX Butter Glosses while eating cinnamon walnut French toast with a heaping scoop of butter, you will not — I REPEAT! — will not experience butter overload.

(As if there were such a thing.)

On my lips, each of these 12 new moisturizing, non-sticky lip glosses feel all smooth and slick like little sticks of butter…but they don’t taste or smell like butter (whew!)

Nope, more like brown sugar and vanilla, yum!

Yes, yum. 🙂

I’ve had mixed luck with NYX lip product flavors and scents in the past, know what I mean?

Not these though. As far as my nose and palate are concerned, NYX nailed these. On a sensory level, these Butter Glosses represent probably the best experience I’ve ever had from the line. Both the brown sugar and vanilla notes are faint, too, just barely there, and dissipate quickly after 1-2 minutes.

One swipe from the doe-foot applicator leaves behind a sheer layer of color and satiny shine, while a second layer ups the coverage to medium.

Either way, these don’t last all that long on my lips. Most of the time I get about an hour.

Despite a couple of quibbles I have with these, I like ’em, in large part because I think they feel like the fabulous $22 Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfectors, WHICH I LOVE! 🙂 — with the biggest differences between them being price, and how long they last on my lips (I think the Clarins Lip Perfectors last longer).

The Butter Glosses can also appear a little patchy at first, where the Lip Perfectors appear smooth and even without any extra effort.

To help the Butter Glosses along, I’ll pat the gloss down with a finger, and press my lips together to smooth things out.

It’s a little extra effort, but not a biggie considering the awesome $5 price.

Wednesday randomness: a teeny, tiny pineapple

I’m not quite sure what to do with this tiny pineapple…

Should I even bother hacking into it?

It’s from the potted pineapple plant my in-laws brought over last Thanksgiving as a gift (yes, strange). The plant’s been sitting on a hutch in my living room since then, and truth be told, I’m amazed it hung on this long. Novato’s not exactly the tropics, after all…as evident by the fact that the tiny pineapple has now fallen off the plant.

Poor thing… Part of me wants to eat it, but there’s hardly anything there.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Ehhh…I wish NYX would work on the longevity of their glosses. I had a gorgeous gloss from NYX – African Queen? Made me look like one too. But it didn’t last long and I had to keep reapplying. Very annoying. I was hoping you would have a different story to tell with these. They look nice and the price is right.

I just received my Ulta order yesterday, which included one of these Butter Glosses (in Apple Strudel). I love the texture, but it looks really milky on my lips — I’ll probably return it.

Might have to try Peach Cobbler or Cherry Pie instead, as they swatch darker on your lips.

These look so pretty (and smell yummy!) but I’m bummed that the longevity is eh. I forget to touch up hourly, I need a gloss that stays put. $5 is a great price point though!
I think my favorite part of this post was that itty-bitty pineapple, lol.

Hmm, I may have to pick a Butter in Stawberry Parfait up when I go to Ulta. Sounds delish! The pineapple cracked me up. They do say that in the Colonial period the pineapple is a gesture of hospitality and welcome.

You know, you can grow a pineapple plant using the top half of a pineapple. 🙂

Peach Cobbler looks pretty! I was just about to pick up on of these but I’m glad that I didn’t. The 1-hr wear time isn’t appealing.

Hi, Karen! What eyeliner are you wearing in these pics? It looks amazing on you!

Also, my sis gets me tiny pineapples for Christmas whenever she can find them because the big ones are out season and I love pineapples. The tiny ones are just as tasty!

Oh, Karen, you simply MUST eat that little, shrunken head of the pineapple world. Even if there isn’t much there, it’s something you’ve grown yourself. It could be horrible tasting but think about how hard your little plant worked to give you that pineapple. 🙂

On a separate note, I’m too distracted by your awesome eye look to really pay attention to the glosses. 🙂

It’s a shame the don’t last too long, those colors are gorgeous! The pigment is not bad for a gloss either!

For the price point I love these things. Plenty of color and moisturizer. It’s just too bad this maybe lasts for about an hour or two. I drink a lot of tea throughout the day but still.

Sometimes Ulta will do a BOGO 50% off on NYX. I stock up on Butter Glosses and the Jumbo Eye Pencils. Now I have at least one of these lip butters on hand, in every bag. Better a little gloss on dried lips than none at all!

Ya know I noticed that Nordstrom is carrying this brand now and I’ve been very confused by that since I thought they were more of a drug store find… LOVE the sheerness of the colors and for $5 I wouldn’t expect them to last! Love the colors actually though, even the red!

Those lip butters are on my list – I’ve been reading up about them so much and your post is what really sold me, thanks to your swatches and lip swatches. I can’t wait to get them soon!
