Dark, Like Midnight at the Center of the Earth, Is Tom Ford Beauty’s Eye Defining Pen in Deeper

September 17th, 2013 by Karen 15 Comments

Tom Ford Defining Pen in Deeper
I don’t want to get too deep on you here, since it’s still early and we’re just talking about makeup, but I’m wearing the new Tom Ford Beauty Eye Defining Pen in Deeper on my upper lash lines…

Consider Tom Ford’s Eye Defining Pen in Deeper if…

  1. You regularly hang out with Jay-Z, Bey and their entourage and frequently say things like, “This round of Cristal is on me, guys!”
  2. You have yet to find your end-all, be-all perfect liquid liner, and money is no object in your ongoing quest.

At $55, this bad boy requires serious beauty budget wiggle room.

Yep, you read that right — $55 for a black liquid liner.

Deep breaths. I know, it’s effing outrageous, but it’s typical of Tom “Too Expensive” Ford.

For that many tacos, it better perform.

So does it? Will it blow your highlighted ombre hair back?

Let me put it this way: I really, really didn’t want to like this liner because, seriously, who needs a $55 black liquid liner anyway?

Fortune 500 tech moguls, Grammy Award-winning pop stars and members of Da Make It Rain Club might not flinch at a price like that, but other people will, especially when there are so many great drugstore and department store liners available.

But holy rollers, babe, Deeper does werk!

A dual-tipped pen with a long flexible nib on one end and a shorter precision tip on the other, it downright delivers. Both tips draw preternaturally smooth, jet-black lines in a single pass, probably even better than LORAC’s Front of the Line Pro, my go-to liquid liner of many years.

Longer than most liquid liner pens and slightly heavier, too, it’s perfectly balanced like a samurai’s sword. At first I thought the heft would be a problem, but somehow the dimensions just work, at least for me, making the pen easier to hold and control.

Plus, the formula lasts all day long and still washes off easily.

Tom Ford obviously doesn’t give a darn about breaking budgets, and Deeper is far from cost-effective, but at least it delivers top-notch results. If you crave high-end makeup and value long-wearing, black-as-night liners that also look phenomenal, Deeper is as delicious as a good pecan pie.

PRICE: $55 (OMG!)
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Saks Fifth Avenue stores and saksfifthavenue.com
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A (only if you don’t mind the price; otherwise, there are better options)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I like that this is two sided, but I don’t go for liquid liner that often.

This TF pen looks SO glossy but $55 is definitely an OMG.

Good to hear that for this insane amount of money it at least delivers!

Well, it does look fantastic. And it’s double sided and bigger so that has to count for something, right? 🙂 Luckily I rarely wear liquid liner or I’d be much more tempted by this!

I love the fact that its double ended. The thin side is one of the thinnest pen type liners I’ve seen.

I might pay 30 or even 40 for this, but 55 is just too steep!

I have to say, just based on the high quality nail polish from Tom Ford–I bought “Bordeaux Lust” last year and it has been worth every penny–I might give this a try. I don’t mind the step up for amazing products. Great review!

Let me just start off by saying that I ADORE Tom Ford. If I am completely honest, I WORSHIP the man. In fact, I share my stalkerish, worshiping admiration for Mr. Ford in the introduction section of my RESUME. While that may sound nutty please consider this….I am a freelance writer who works in the beauty industry so nutty comes with the job. I worship him because everything his handsome hands touch turn into sexy gold. He is a genius, a pioneer and innovator, and I will argue with anyone who disagrees with me until I am blue in the face.

As someone who follows his work intensely and considers themselves to be a huge fan, I am well aware of how expensive all of his sexy gold is. And somehow I always convince myself that it is not only totally fine but 100% rational to spend $55 on eyeliner because my hero makes it. All of his die hard fans pay this much and are able to sleep at night so why should I be any different?

But $55 for EYELINER?! When I actually sit down to think about that nugget of crazy my eyebrows start to squinch up. Let’s break that price down shall we?

$55 is 55 Wet ‘n’ Wild eyeliners. They are 99 cents EACH!

$55 is a really dope pair of shoes on sale at Nordies.

According to the Internets, we lose 20 baby teeth as kids. If the Tooth Fairy were to place $2.75 under a kids pillow for each tooth lost, the Tooth Fairy would end up shelling out $55 per kid.

That’s nuts. But here’s the thing. It’s not Wet ‘n’ Wild eyeliner or teeth. It TOM FORD eyeliner! I love it, you look super stunning in the above photos wearing it, and the eyeliner itself is damn sexy. Plus the formula is of the highest quality and the results are pretty freakin amazing. And that my friend is all that matters. If I had to choose between spending $55 on dope kicks at Nordies (yawn, practical) or $55 on Tom Ford eyeliner (sexy and magical) I will choose Mr. Ford EVERY TIME!

I love you and your blog by the way. You are one gorgeous and talented minx! Please don’t stop!

I bought this eyeliner the day it came out and it is my HG. It goes on effortlessly and gives me the perfect cat eye. I beyond LOVE it and use it everyday. Worth the splurge for me.

Would I pay $55 (or the equivalent in £££) for a black liquid liner?….

    Nawwww!!

Seriously, I love makeup, and believe that sometimes you can own more than one navy eyeshadow and sometimes it is totally justified spending more on THAT red lip stain rather than its cheaper version….

but will anyone really notice the difference between your $55 black liner and your other good black liquid liners??

Tom, gie us a break, ken?!?!

    Hi Karen,
As soon as I read your review I purchased this eyeliner, I don’t know what I am doing wrong but it bleeds as soon as the pen touches my eye, it makes a mess! I am so disappointed, for the last week I have been practicing and it is just a big expensive mess. Any tips, suggestions? what am i doing wrong?
    Thanks!
