My Hair Wants to Run Wild and Free! — and I’m Cool With That

September 13th, 2016 by Karen 19 Comments

Gonna let this hair run wild and free!

Sleek and structured is fun sometimes, especially when you get a new set of bangs, but I’ve realized that my hair wants to figuratively go where the wild things are, so if it wants to naturally go wavy and run free, I’m totally down.

For the wavy, “wild thing” look in these pics, I used two beachy wave products from Bumble and Bumble.

I started by washing my hair and drying it with my trusty Aquis Hair Towel.

Then I sprayed Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion ($29) on it from mid-shaft to the ends before letting my hair air dry.

Surf Infusion has been around a while. It’s similar to the O.G. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray for beachy waves, but instead of giving your hair a matte finish with waves that have a slightly crunchy texture, it leaves a sheen and coaxes your hair into waves that are soft to the touch.

To use it, spray it on damp hair, and let it air dry to do its thang.

For this look, after my hair completely “air dried,” I created the loose waves on the top layers with a ghd Classic Curl Iron. Then I sprayed Bumble and Bumble Surf Foam Spray Blow Dry on top for texture and used my fingers to softly scrunch the product through the top layers.

This was my first time using the Surf Foam Spray. It’s a newish product (I think it came out earlier this summer), and it’s a hybrid spray mousse/beach waves spray for volume and texture. You’re supposed to spray it on wet hair, then blow it dry, but I was feeling creative, so I sprayed it on dry hair instead.

Even though I didn’t use it the way you’re supposed to, I still like the results, especially after using the curling iron, because the spray lifted the wavy curls and defined them without leaving them feeling crunchy, so they could run wild and free!

Speaking of wild things (hello, lazy transitions)…I’ve been listening to this song by Alessia Cara (she’s a Canadian pop singer) on repeat since last weekend. It’s my current hair anthem.

I’ve liked the handful of her songs I’ve heard, and I just found out that she’s performing in SF next month. I kinda-sorta want to go…but then I’m like, “Her set probably won’t start until 10 p.m., and that’s when my body needs to be asleep. So I’ll just watch her videos on Youtube…”

HAHAH! Welcome to #momlife.

Actually, let’s get real… Even before Connor came along, I was like that when it comes to concerts. I think it would be different, though, if I were taller and could actually see the stage. I’d probably be more motivated to go to shows, stay up late and dance the night away.

Someone needs to invent concert booster chairs for smaller peeps…

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Your hair looks so pretty! I am super low maintenance when it comes to my hair. I just wash it and rub in some Josie Maran Argan Hair Oil Serum.

Your hair looks fantastic!! I have been a little bored with my hair lately and it’s also been falling out like crazy, I’m not sure why. I don’t have any idea though on what to do with my hair as far as a new style goes.

Love it! I’m having some pretty intense long-hair-envy… I’ve been kinda-sorta growing my hair out for a bit, and it’s only just skimming the bottoms of my ears. I think I’ll get to short bob territory by like… Christmas, maybe.

The thing about being short at concerts – man, can I relate!! It’s usually such a free-for-all. I had a pretty cool experience at a show earlier this year, though, where the host asked the shorter people to stand in front and the taller people to move to the back. Mind. Blown. It was a pretty intimate show, and it made a world of difference to be able to see everything! I wish that was like, standard policy at every show ever, haha.

OMG, how embarassing would it be to go to a concert with a booster seat?
But I’d totally do it if you did it.

My parents are both quite a bit taller than I am and before I grew my last two inches, I used a booster in my car. Frankly, I could probably still use one.

Loving the bangs! I haven’t had bangs in like 26 years. I think I have way too many crows feet and undereye luggage to rock them at this point.

And I love that surf spray. My hair is getting wavier as I age but not too wavy, just to be annoying and look unkempt. If I don’t iron it into submission, I like to use that surf spray to add some definition.

Karen! You have to see this. A company replaced regular advertising in a London tube with images of cats! The photos are precious. <3

As usual, I’m very jealous of your volume (though, I know when it’s hot you luscious locked ladies would prefer thinner hair). My routine is always the same if I’m going somewhere. A little gel at the crown and blow dry for some lift. Some Redken curvaceous ringlet cream through the rest and air dry. It does have a bit of crunch, so I finger comb after a couple of hours. If I’m just hanging around the house (or during the summer on days off), no product and all air dry. It’s more to cut down on my getting-ready time in the AM than because it looks good. HAHA!

I do own the B+B Surf Infusion, but I haven’t given it much attention lately. To be honest, I haven’t done much to my hair for the last months, ever since I started loosing it and my son started to grab and pull it has been out of my face in a top knot.

Same thing happens with me and Connor. 🙂 I was just about to put her in her baby carrier and the first thing I did was grab a clip to put my hair up!

Let me know if you find any good volumizing products.

So far I had no luck with that, any volumizing product I have tried made my hair look greasy immediately.

Looking good Mama! I see you got your healthy thick mane back! I’ll check out that Surf Foam Spray. I try to let my hair mostly air dry then I blow dry it straight. I don’t use any other heat appliances . And it’s really gotten long over the summer.

Oh man, late nights. I don’t have children, but I have the opportunity to participate in a circus gig, but it’s at a club on a Thursday night. I have a boring client presentation to give the next morning. I’m not one for late nights. I was out late on Saturday for the burlesque show and I slept practically all of Sunday.

Your hair looks fabulous! I need to wash mine, but I can’t shower due to a heart monitor I’m wearing (I’m fine, part of my yearly check-up for a relatively innocuous heart condition), so I might have to either ask Zack for help or dry shampoo the crap out of my hair.

I swear I commented but I got an error message!

I love this hair look! My hair is quite straight, doesn’t get too much volume.

Late nights man, they’re tough even without kids. There’s an opportunity to do a gig with some of my circus friends, but it’s 10:30 PM / later at a club on a Thursday night. Way too much with work the next morning (including a big client presentation).

Alessia Cara! I saw her perform last week on Ellen & I immediately googled her. Totally digging her sound, her look, her vibe. Couldn’t find her on iTunes (?) but that could’ve been user error. I get my wig shook this weekend (translation: I’m getting a blow out & flatiron). I’m really looking forward to it. Not much of a straight hair kinda gal but every since I found a new stylist whom I enjoy, I’ve been looking forward to it. Love your hair, btw. 🙂
