10 Things That Go Through Your Head When You Do Smoky Eyes for the First Time

February 8th, 2017 by Karen 14 Comments

  1. Do I really need eight eyeshadows for this look? Well, if YouTube says so, then I guess it must be true. Here goes…
  2. Am I doing something wrong?? I thought I’d look like a Kardashian, but I just look like I got into a reality TV show brawl.
  3. Why does this eyeshadow keep creeping up toward my eyebrows!? I can’t stop it!
  4. OK, so this looks nothing like that YouTube tutorial I just watched. What the hell!?
  5. Um…why does one eye look totally different than the other? Should I just keep blending?
  6. I AM SO SICK OF BLENDING.
  7. So, maybe applying all of that black eyeshadow at once wasn’t the best idea.
  8. How did all that eyeshadow end up on my ears?
  9. All done! I’m so Insta ready. 🙂 Now let me just take a quick pic of myself with my phone… Holy crap! This looks NOTHING like it does in the mirror.
  10. Oh, well. I guess I need more practice, but now I gotta wash all of these brushes… BLUH!!!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Haha this is so true! Brilliant! That photo is BOMB though Karen-you’ve nailed it! I usually find I’ve finished with one smoky cat eye and one rounded-shape smoky eye… doh!!

HAHA! I’ve always stopped at #2 and quickly washed it off in horror. But I readily admit that I have no patience for blending and any shadow I wear takes less than a minute to apply and blend (AKA super sheer). Even when I did smokey zombie eyes for one of the boys for Halloween, it looked more like Alice Cooper. 🙂

LOLOL! This made me laugh! The first time I did a smoky eye, I used purple, and ended up looking like I had two black eyes! I actually have yet to try a black smoky eye, because I think black looks a little harsh against my complexion and hair — I stick to grey and silver, or do crazy colors like green or blue, preferably nice and shiny. Kind of the opposite of the original dark, sultry smoky eye look, I guess, but it seems to suit me better (or at least it suits my personality better — colorful, and the blending can be less meticulous!).

“Why does this eyeshadow keep creeping up toward my eyebrows!? I can’t stop it!” LOL! YES! Doesn’t matter that it’s many years later with practice… this still happens to me with darker colours. Ugh.

LOL, Ash! The struggle is so real! Here are some things that help with the eyeshadow creep:

      1) Place the shadow further down than you think, so you have room for the edges to spread out and diffuse without going too high.

      2) If you do end up bringing it too high, or too far out, or at the in correct angle, you can always take a tapered blending brush, load it with face powder, and sweep it along the edges to correct.

I’ve never gotten past #3 without washing everything off. I’ve given up. A smoky eye is just not for me.

It took me a while to figure out how to stop #3, although it still happens all the time (it’s like it has a mind of its own!). One thing that helps is to place the shadow further down than you think. That way you have room for the edges to spread out and diffuse without going too high. And if you do end up bringing it too high, you can always take a tapered blending brush, load it with face powder, and sweep it along the edges. I do believe that everyone can do a smoky eye. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
