What I Wore Wednesday, Vol. 2: Blue, Taupe and Gold Eyes

Today’s makeup look!

I contend that Wednesday is the best day of the week to wear blue eye makeup, because you’re halfway through the week. You made it halfway, which calls for something of a mini celebration. You’re saying to the universe, “You can’t stop me, universe! I’m halfway there, and I’ll be chilling on Saturday watching Magic Mike in my pajamas very, very soon.”

I wore a bit of blue today — blue, purple and taupe (Yes! Taupe is dope.), gold and a smidgen o’ brown on my eyes, along with pink cheeks and lips.

So much shimmer

I’m using the RainForest of the Sea II Skin Twinkle Lighting Palette, which is super shimmery, for some glow. I applied a layer underneath my blush and bronzer, just to tone down the shimmer a bit.

I’m also wearing the orange shade from the Tarte Color Your World Color-Correcting Palette underneath my under-eye concealer, because I was extra tired when I woke up this morning (someone’s car alarm went off at the witching hour and blared for — seriously, I’m not kidding — an entire hour).

I like it… I think it’s pretty good. It’s a tad on the thinner, drier side, like Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage, but it works well under concealer and powder.

To bring down the shine on my forehead, I dusted Tarte Blot Party powder, also from spring 2017 (just OK).

Highly recommended!

And then I used the best thing I’ve tried from Tarte’s spring collection so far, the Rainforest of the Sea Volume II Eyeshadow Palette.

Babe, these shadows are amazing! A lot of the time Tarte’s powder eyeshadows are very dusty, and when you run a brush across the pan, the grains are easily picked up and flicked away. Basically, they can be very messy, but these aren’t. They’re powders, but they’re soft and creamy powders, and they’re blissfully easy to blend. Highly recommended!

Wearing concealer as foundation today! I mixed two shades of Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Concealer

Concealer as foundation

Let’s see, what else did I do…? Oh, yeah! I was in the mood to use concealer as foundation, since every foundation that I’ve been using lately (even my favorite Hourglass Vanish Seamless) has been looking extra dry on my skin lately, so I mixed it up by dotting Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Concealer, which is one of the the most skin-like concealers around, all over my face and blending it out with a beautyblender. I mixed shades Y31 and Y41, and I liked how it turned out. The coverage doesn’t look dry, and I pushed it to medium coverage.

That blue, though!!

Lastly, that pop of blue on the lower water line? I’m so feelin’ that right now. It’s from a now-defunct liner by Tom Ford called Exotic Teal 07, but you can get the same look with MAC Technakohl Liner in Take the Plunge.

On my lower water line is a killer shade by Tom Ford, the Eye Defining Pencil in 07 Exotic Teal, but you can get the same look with MAC Technakohl Liner in Take the Plunge

If you’ve been wearing blue shadow in the outer corner or crease lately, swish a blue liner on that lower water line. It’ll be killer.

Who else wore blue today?

Tell me a bit about your look today. Did you do blue, too? Twinsies! 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I often apply highlighter under blush and bronzer! Not only does it tamp down the glow like you said, I find it helps highlighter blend into the blush better and avoid the dreaded “Shimmer Strip” effect.

Oh my gosh that shadow palette is pretty. I hardly ever like bigger palettes, but even the blues in this one look so wearable!! That’s a beautiful lipstick, too. I don’t recall if Tarte and Hourglass are natural brands (which I’ve been going for lately) but I love the Rainforest of the Sea line and keep meaning to try the vanish stick.

I have no clue when I last wore blue. Oh wait, that rhymes. Still, it has been weeks, probably even was last year. Not a color that I gravitate to, but I will try it on the lower lash line.

I thought your eye look was very pretty-in-purple until your closeup pic. You always rock the blues. 🙂 Nothing stays on my watery water lines but I don’t mind because I’m all about trying to get my old eyes to look bigger (and I find liner on my water lines make them look smaller). I think the last time I wore blue was a teal from the 24/7 Jackpot liner set. That was, what? 100 years ago? HAHA!

    Those shadows do look nice.
Navy specifically really looks good on you.

Oh gosh, such a pretty look. I like wearing navy on my eyes. I don’t need another eyeshadow palette (I just got two more last week) but this one is a stunner. I need to swatch it at Sephora. I also think I need Take The Plunge! I love how you always find little Mac gems from their permanent collection.

I wore matte purples today on my eyes.

LOL! Karen, on Tuesday I wore blue eyeshadow AND blue lips, it was fun, then on Wednesday I wore blue-green eyeshadows with blue-violet lips and plum and purple cheeks, because, why not?

Those swatches of the tarte Rainforest of the Sea Vol. 2 eyeshadow palette look really gorgeous. And a nice balance of warm and cooler shades. That palette has been sitting in my Sephora cart for about a month, I think I should finally pull the trigger on that!

I love that we live in a makeup era where blue lips are a thing. Did anybody stop you on the street and ask about your lip color? I would’ve totally done that if I saw a chic lady wearing blue eyeshadow and blue lipstick.

I didn’t think that I could love a Tarte Palette more than the Tartlette in Bloom Palette, but this one’s so next level. I love how there’s a balance of workhorse browns and fun colors, too. If you end up getting it, send me a pic of you wearing it! Or better yet, put that ish on Instagram!

Thank you for referring to me as a ‘chic’ lady, Karen! No one said anything, but a couple of complete strangers smiled at me on the street. A man and a woman, both in my own age group. Usually, if I get compliments on a wild and crazy eyeshadow look, they come from a woman or gay man under 25 years of age, or a woman over 75. But for blue or grey lipstick, I get compliments from people (more often women) in my own age group (which I guess is around 45 to 70, depending on someone’s style/how old they feel). It’s interesting! I mostly get compliments on my very long, partly grey hair from younger women (under 30ish), especially if I’ve got it in a braid. I have yet to hear a negative comment from anyone, even when I was out and about with green lipstick on.

1.) Are there any matte or toned-down satin shades in the Tarte eyeshadow palette?

2.) I love blue shadows on brown eyes. I have blue eyes and I’ve never understood the fuss… I’m actually really, really jealous of brown eyes. This entire look is beautiful.

      Hi Amanda!

      1) The three brown shades are all satins with very little shimmer (YES!). They’re perfect transition colors.

      2) Thank you! I love blue shadows on blue eyes, even though the “rule” is to use coppery or reddish tones on blue eyes. I think navy and dark teal look amazing on blue eyes!

Thanks, lady! Of course I had to throw in some Tom Ford into the mix after we talked about it the other day…

I have the first Tarte Rainforest of the Sea palette. It is incredible! The quality is insane. This one looks gorgeous, but I’ve been talking myself out of it since I don’t ever do smokey looks. It looks beautiful on you!
