A Rainy Day Minimalist Makeup Tutorial: Cheerful Pink Cheeks, Rosy Lips and Doe Eyes

rainy day makeup tutorial
Y tho?!

For the record, it’s hard to look cute in a raincoat. (In case you were wondering.)

It’s rainy and gloomy here in NorCal today, but I’m not complaining, because the rain makes me feel alive! The world around me is thirsty, and it’s taking a much-needed shower and a big gulp of refreshing H2O. And when it’s done, the oak trees and the grass on the hill and the sidewalks and my car (haha) are all going to look fresh and new. 🙂

Or…maybe that’s just California Karen romanticizing the rain, since we haven’t had much of it this winter. I’m sure that if I lived someplace where it’s been pouring 24/7, I’d be like FRICKIN’ RAIN RUINING EVERY MINUTE AND EVERY SECOND OF MAH LIFE!!!

Weather like this calls for a dose of cheerful pink cheeks and bright rosy lips (it couldn’t hurt). Thanks to an illuminating primer, the skin is ever-so-dewy, and the dark blue liner plays off the pink. It’s strategically placed on the middle of the lower lash line for a doe-eyed effect, so you can give strangers a come-hither stare while you sashay by them in your raincoat.

Side note: #teamraincoat ALL THE WAY. Raincoats are the way to go (even if they are hard to look cute in), because they let you keep your hands free, and if there’s a kitten huddling in an rainy alley and you need to save her, you can carry her and comfort her with both hands.

See? Always looking ahead. ?????

When it’s raining, I like to keep my makeup on the minimal side, because you never know if you and your raincoat will get caught in a downpour, and I figure that if my face gets drenched in the rain, better for it to happen while I’m wearing minimal makeup than a full face of war paint… You know, less to clean up when I get wherever I need to go. *shrugs shoulders*

Here’s a breakdown of this look…

rainy day makeup tutorial 1

TOOLS (products I used are in italic):

  • Whatever you like to blend your foundation and cream with — a blending brush, BeautyBlender or your fingers
  • Q-tips
  • A brow gel (I used Hourglass Arch Brow Gel in Warm Brunette)
  • A waterproof Mascara (L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Waterproof)
  • A long-wearing dark blue pencil liner (Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Sabbath)
  • An under-eye concealer (I used MAC Studio Waterweight Concealer in a mix of NC20 and NW45)
  • A liquid foundation (Physicians Formula The Healthy Foundation in DW2)
  • An illuminating liquid primer (I like Physicians Formula Spotlight Illuminating Primer)
  • A creamy pink blush (Kosas Cosmetics Creme Blush in 8th Muse)
  • A matte rosy pink liquid lipstick (Physicians Formula The Healthy Lip Velvet Finish in Dose of Rose) — I chose a liquid matte lipstick because I didn’t want to wear anything that would stick to my hair

rainy day makeup products

STEPS:

  1. Mix a few drops of an illuminating liquid primer with the foundation you plan to use, and apply that elixir ONLY where you want/need coverage.
  2. Conceal the dark circles under your eyes, if you have them.
  3. Fill in your brows with the brow gel.
  4. Tightline your upper lash line (optional).
  5. Line the middle of your lower lash line with the blue eye pencil, and then smudge the edges with a Q-tip for a doe-eyed effect.
  6. Coat your upper lashes with waterproof mascara. Then, on your lower lashes where you have the blue liner, apply some extra mascara to intensify the doe eyes.
  7. Blend the creamy pink blush atop the apples of your cheeks.
  8. And finish with the matte rosy pink liquid lipstick. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

It has been raining non-stop here in Germany, we still have flood warnings along the river, so I am not very excited about more rainy days. I can get on board with the pink lips though, and I am firmly team raincoat. So practical!

Oh, that’s kind of scary. We’ve had flood warnings here too where I live in the past and it puts me on edge, especially since we live on a hill and we could slide right down if the rains get too heavy. I hope you guys are OK! Stay dry.

    Hi Karen
Thank you for another lovely tutorial:)
How would you compare this physician foundation to nutrogina you used the other day?
Which one in your opinion gives more glowing finish.
    Have a great day

      Hi Bebe,

The Neutrogena has sheerer coverage than the Physicians Formula. It’s also more dewy, and the PF is closer to a matte. If you want something with a dewy finish and like minimal coverage the Neutrogena Tint should be a good fit!

      Hi Ericca,

I’m so glad you like this! I will try to do more tutorials with this style and with the outline. If there’s ever a type of makeup look you’d like to see (like for a specific occasion, or a color, etc.) just let me know.

I love cozy, rainy days at home. I admit, I’m usually and umbrella person but saving a kitten is a strong case for rain coats!

I really like the the dark blue liner! I mainly use black and brown, but this would be a fun way to change things up.

      Hi Ruchita,

The dark blue would play up the brown tones in your eyes. I say go for it!

Want to know something funny? I just got back from a Target run (bought some bread flour and active dry yeast because I’m going to bake bread this weekend). Anyway, it was raining and hailing while the baby and I were out, so it was a challenge getting to and from the car and getting her in her seat. Of course, when we finally got home, the hail and rain stopped and now it’s sunny. Crazy weather at it’s finest. I guess it’s better than snow!

Thanks! I was just rocking it at Target in the middle of a hailstorm! The baby was freaked out by the sound of the hail (she had her raincoat on too, of course), so we had to wait until the storm passed.

Is it drizzly up there today? I hope you got in lots of good writing this morning for your new job. 🙂

You even look adorably gorgeous in a raincoat! This is a New England look with style. Quick question- is the Hourglass Warm Brunette reddish warm or like chocolate with a hint? I have your exact hair color with light/medium neutral tone and was using Anastacia Chocolate but its not quite “it”. Love love your navy liner with the pink ?

      Hi Diana,

Aww, thanks girl! So, re: Hourglass gel. Here’s a swatch. I think it’s more chocolate with a hint of red, which is probably why I like it so much. Let me know if you have any other Qs about it!

You’re welcome, Diana! I think the color is lovely. I don’t like it when brow products have too much red in the brown, either. It makes my brows look kinda off!

I usually get on the kids when they wear their hoods up since they look so emo. You, however, look very cute with your raincoat hood up. Plus, it’s necessary. 🙂

I love this look – your skin looks great!

Would you believed it hailed here yesterday?! Of course it happened when Connor and I were running errands (I had to buy bread flour and yeast at Target). Luckily we were inside the store, so we just waited for it to pass.

I’m really excited about your cauliflower pizza crust, btw!
