I suppose the very first spark that led to MAC Evolution Revolution Lipglass ($14.50) ignited one day in Mrs. Mannah’s second-grade class. The year was 1982, and I’d just met Jen, who would quickly become one of my lifelong BFFs.
Evolution Revolution is the shade I created for the upcoming MAC Bloggers’ Obsessions Collection, a nine-piece collection of MAC Eyeshadows and Lipglasses launching June 21, exclusively online (available now!). It’s also the real reason for the secret squirrel trip I took to Toronto last April.

Jen and I still recall with frightening accuracy all of the cute boys in our second-grade class. “Remember Lee, with the missing tooth?” Jen will ask. “Oh, yeah,” I’ll reply. “Total hottie.”
Sometimes I find it hard to believe, but we’ve been obsessing over boys for nearly 27 years. Jen’s having a baby boy in the fall, and I can already tell he’s going to be the new object of our affections.
The next piece of the EvRev puzzle fell into place the very next year in Mrs. Hartunian’s third-grade class, which is when I met Cindy. She had long black hair, a talent for drawing graceful pictures of glamorous girls, and a great Granny Goose potato chip hookup (her dad worked there, so she would always bring a huge box of assorted chips to every class party).
Cindy is still my number one surf buddy, and the one person I can always depend on when I’m feeling blue.
But Evolution Revolution’s real roots didn’t take hold until high school, when Jen, Cindy and I all played flute in the school band. It was between orchestra rehearsals and marching band competitions (BAND GEEKS!) that our friendship really grew.
Evolution Revolution honors the bonds of friendship and the people who are there for us through good times and bad. But that’s not the entire story behind this warm peachy pink gloss…
What is the MAC Bloggers’ Obsessions Collection?
Back in January, MAC asked a group of beauty bloggers to submit ideas, in pictures and words, for an upcoming collection of Lipglasses and Eyeshadows. Nine of the submissions would eventually go on to become the products in the release.
When I was brainstorming ideas for colors, two things kept popping into my head: 1) memories of a trip that Jen, Cindy and I took to Maui a few years ago; and 2) how we’re all shaped by the challenges we face. Two hundred and fifty words later, Evolution Revolution was born.
In a way, I’m thankful for the obstacles life regularly throws in my path, because it’s the challenges that force us to change, grow and evolve.
One afternoon, while I was on vacation with two of my closest friends from childhood, I witnessed something I’ll never forget. We were on the last day of our girl’s trip to Maui and had pulled the car over at an unnamed beach to catch one final sunset before heading home. Standing there on the side of the road, I caught a glimpse of the light falling on our faces the moment the sun drifted beneath the horizon. The colors flashed from buttery gold, pink, peach and purple to glittering blue and green and back again.
It was one of those moments when you feel like you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. I realized that every bump in the road helped me get to that spot, changing me into the girl standing there on that strip of sand, etching that moment into memory.
Like colors shifting in the light as it falls on a woman’s face at sunset, the colors of Evolution Revolution Lipglass are beautiful and complex — from some angles, pink; from others, peachy gold. And when the light hits them just right, we see brief flashes of purple, green and blue micro glitter.
We all face challenges that change us, but I like to think they also help us get where we need to be.
That is Evolution Revolution.

In the lab at the Estée Lauder Companies Canadian Innovation Centre last April, I mixed pigments like a mad makeup scientist until everything about the color felt just right.
MAC paired each of the bloggers with a chemist during the color mixing/matching phase. Cheryl (she invented the MAC Acrylic Paints; can you believe it?!) and I hit it off right away!
The first two versions of Evolution Revolution were a little lighter than I envisioned, so Cheryl helped me make a few adjustments

I can only hope that MACaholics love the color as much as I do, because when I hold it in my hand, I see much more than a Lipglass…
I see the fabric of lifelong friendships.
I see the strength within each and every one of us.
And most of all, I see you.
The subtle green, blue and purple glitter sparkles on your lips as you walk across the stage on graduation day. The tube waits patiently in your purse on your first day to work. The wand waves in your fingertips as you realize that, yes, you’re finally over him, and you know you’re going to be okay.
This Lipglass is my love letter to you, my friend, and I hope it helps you write the story of your life.

This year may have flown for you, but it dragged for me. This month I’ve taken to judging how my day has gone by how many students cursed me out as they walked out of my classroom. In front of the rest of the students. So far there haven’t been any today! But, I’ve had up to 11 students absent from one class.
This summer I will be spending a lot of time up north with my parents. My mom is having serious lung issues. In fact, we’ll find out on Thursday if she can/will go on the lung transplant list. I don’t want to think about what happens if she doesn’t make the list. But, her GP, lung specialist, and a couple of GP friends who have seen her test results all think that she’s a great candidate for the transplant.
This year has been so much more difficult than I ever could have imagined, in so many different facets of life.

Okay, can I just say I think it’s awesome that your hubby is an evolutionary biologist? I was an Evolution and Ecology major at UC Davis for a while (ended up switching to Botany and then just general Bio). I really enjoyed the subject and classes!
The shade’s a little similar to Nymphette, but it’s a bit more pink, and it has these teeny, tiny pieces of green, blue and purple micro-glitter that sparkle when the light hits it just so.
That is awesome! My husband is an evolutionary biologist who specializes in paleontology, specifically dinosaurs. He’s one of the top T. rex experts in the world! I really do admire all of you people who can do the natural sciences. You are one smart cookie!

You stress perseverance and to overcome obstacles, often sharing intimate details in your life that, as a community almost, we can come together and comfort each other. This blog has become such a blessing to me, in an odd sense, because it has helped me realize where I would like to take my life. Oh… wow. I am totally rendered speechless and blown away by this post. The story behind your lipgloss (A lipgloss, nonetheless, but still an important item in a girl’s arsenal) is just breathtakingly fantastic. I really envy you, I really wish I had friends like yours- mine just seem to be pretty much hi-bye or fair weather friends, and all just drift off and part ways after each stage (e.g. elementary school, high school, University). My friendship stories are more filled with betrayals and back-stabbing… so different from yours.
Still, it inspires me 🙂 And makes me want to be a better person for both myself and the people around me and who care for me and vice versa.

I love the warm and heartfelt story behind your color. I hope this doesn’t sound corny but after reading that description, I was holding back my tears. Your words are so descriptive and lovely that it immediately reminded me of the times I would spend with my 2 best friends – my sisters. I’ve had many bumps in my road of life and they were there to help catch me when I fell.
I am a sucker for true friendship stories and women supporting another. We live in an age where we hoot and holler for girl on girl fights on reality TV. It just gets a little old and puts out a message that we are just catty and a bunch of haters! Your story is the complete opposite of that – it’s heartfelt and genuine.
I’m not a fan of lipglass per se but because I have read your blog for what feels like YEARS and my younger sister is the one that introduced me to you! So I would love to buy a tube of this beautiful lipglass. Even if I didn’t wear it everyday, I will love it for what it stands for!

Anywho, the color’s a little different from Mimmy in that it’s a touch more pink and has tiny bits o’ multi-colored glitter — not so much that it feels gritty on the lips, but just enough to catch the light from certain angles.
I’ve heard other gals here mention that they wish the collection was available internationally. I’ll pass it on… who knows, if it does well here in the US maybe it’ll launch abroad!

Karen, this post gave me goosebumps and brought me to tears, a reaction I’ve never had before from reading someone’s beauty blog. It was the last chunk of writing that really got to me and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate all the time and effort you put into this blog. I wish there was a way thay WE could give back to YOU for all your help and hard work. It was lovely hearing how far you’ve come and it must’ve been an amazing experience getting to create your own lipglass. I think the final version is such a beautiful colour, the perfect shade of warm peachy pink that MAC has always been missing in their vast line up. It’s just the colour i’ve been looking for and I will be picking up a tube of Evolution Revolution to remind myself that obstacles will only make you stronger.

OMG! I totally am in lurve with this color! I came to the blog looking for a peachy pinky or coral-y lip color! Shame its only gonna be available online! 🙁 I live in the Middle East n won’t be able to order it 🙁

I’m so getting it. I even put June 21 in my calendar, so I can go to the website and order it asap! Evolution Revolution is the only piece from this collection that really calls to me. I think the rest are too pigmented–I’m a pale girl, so too much color and I look like a clown. But on popsugar.com there is a poll about the MAC Blogger collection, and Evolution Revolution is running away with the vote for favorite! Prepare for it to sell out, girl.

I love peachy pinks and this lipglass is adorable! I’d love to buy it but i live in Australia ==”. I doubt I would be able to buy it though because Australia’s price for makeup is like more than double the prices in America… so I wouldn’t spend $35 AUD on a lipgloss =[. What a shame though
