A Trick to Remember Names in Social Situations

February 25th, 2009 by Karen 17 Comments

Don’t you just love it when you make your big entrance to a party or a restaurant for cocktails with friends and before you know it you’ve been introduced to 10 new people whose names you immediately forget?

Then, for the rest of the evening you dance awkwardly around conversations with those people hoping to hear their names again in passing because you waited too long to ask them to repeat it?

Okay, maybe that’s just something I do, LOL! At any rate, this (click for the video) is how I avoid that dreadful party trap. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    Hi Karen,

I am the same way! Literally the instant I meet someone, I have already forgotten their name! What’s funny is I never, ever forget a face though. 🙂

I can’t remember names! really awfull.

A couple of months ago we went to a concert of a famous Dutch band. After the concert we went backstage and all the band members introduced themselves to me. Ofcourse I didnt remeber their names. Until one of them asked me to sent him a invitation for my hyves page. I felt awfull because I had to ask him his name again (BLUSHING!)

So it doesnt mather if your name is Jude Law (yummm) or James the mailman, Im not going to remember the name! (giggles)

    Hi Vampy Varnish,

Do you ever watch old shows or movies and see an actor and think, “That’s so and so before he/she got famous”? El hub has a pretty good knack for faces and does that all the time, LOL!

    Hi Wendy,

Awww! That’s so cool that you got to go backstage and meet the band. Did you stay in touch with the guy?

I wish remembering names came naturally to me! It was definitely a skill I had to work at. 🙂

YES! All the time in fact. I can remember someone I saw like on a specific Law & Order or CSI or whatever. My hubbie is the opposite, he constantly thinks some actress is another actress who looks NOTHING like that person, only they are both blond or something. It drives me bonkers, LOL!

This reminds me of a recent episode of The Office 😀
You should watch it! Either the newest one, or the one before that. It’s when the main guy goes to give sales trainings at other offices. It’s really funny!

Totally agree with Kizzy. Steve Carell’s character had a similar but a little more complicated and insulting way of memorizing names.

That is SUCH a great trick. Really is.

I’ve been trying to make a little list of what I’ll buy when I get to MAC in Stockholm: filling my basket on the MAC website and I’m now up to 164$
Three blushes, two lipsticks, three eyeshadows, a kohl and some brush cleaner. And I haven’t even looked at fluidline or paint pots. Oh dear.
Then again I haven’t been in a MAC store since October…

that’s a great tip but unfortunately i’m such a bad person. i tend to look at a person and remember their face more than their names. problem with that is i tend to associate them with a funny object or person and i’m afraid i might actually call them by that object or person. i might start calling them four eyes or sweaty palms. lol. sorry such a bad, bad habit.

That is a great tip. Here is a story for ya:

I went to the Apple store once to meet with someone at the Genius bar. I registered and wondered the store because I was a bit early. Well, when the Apple employee came to get me, he called me by my name. I thought it was super cool of him because there were so many other people and he remembered ME.

Well, then I went back to another Apple store and again had an appointment at the Genius bar. As I told them I was there, I overheard an Apple employee tell another employee (who I think was new) that when they put in the description of the person’s clothing to be more descriptive. Don’t put black coat — tons of people could be wearing black coats. When they register you, they also put in there what you are wearing to recognize you. And here I thought the Apple employee was awesome. Well, he was but this just took him down a notch.

That’s a great idea. I’ll have to try that! Apparently, FDR would imagine people’s names written across their faces. I’ve always meant to try it out, but I never remember to do so (oh, the irony).

I am going to try out tomorrow. We have an in-service day at high school. So all of the middle and elementary teachers will be there too. I can never remember their names.

    Have a great week end!
