Unsung Makeup Heroes: Bite Beauty Multistick in Honeywheat

December 13th, 2017 by Karen 5 Comments

Bite Beauty Multistick in Honeywheat, the unsung hero of all your warm brown palettes. ALL OF THEM!

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

I’ve had *three* conversations over the last few days about warm brown eyeshadow palettes.

Have you noticed when you walk into a Sephora, an Ulta or a drugstore that those six-pan palettes with orange browns and reddish browns are everywhere? It’s like, Oh, there’s Urban Decay Naked Heat, and there’s NARS Wanted, and there’s Anastasia Modern Renaissance.

They’re all over the place!

I’m a fan. I think they’re fun. My heart’s all, “Blow out those warm orange-y and red smoky eyes until your wrist falls off, K!” but my mind’s like, “Realistically, you have 15 minutes to do your makeup today, so look for shortcuts.”

Shortcuts: I’m all about them.

I’ve been starting my smoky looks lately by layering two cream shadows together, one lighter and one darker, to jump start the smoky gradient effect.

I might not always have the time to layer and blend with the care that smoky eyes usually need (but who does, really?), but this trick at least gets me halfway there.

MAC NC42 over here for reference.

This warm matte chocolate brown is Bite Beauty Multistick in Honeywheat ($24), and it’s the lighter shade I’ve been using in most of my smoky eye looks lately. I think it’s the best base shade for those orange-y and reddish brown palettes (or pretty much any nude/neutral palette in your stash).

It’s a multipurpose cream stick for lids, lips and cheeks with a pliable consistency that you can easily push around with your brush. It’s not oily or greasy, though, so it actually stays where it belongs once it sets, which takes about five minutes.

Other creams blend into it easily, too, and powder shadows glide across it without sticking to any spots.

These Bite Beauty Lip Pencils Have Bite!

April 11th, 2017 by Karen 23 Comments

MWAH! Kisses!

Dang, these Bite Beauty Lip Pencils ($18 each) have serious swag! Shoot, I haven’t been a lip pencil person since on/around ’97, back when I rocked dark purple liner on the daily (unblended, of course), but I guess I’m finally over that trauma, because these pencils? They’re doing things to me! 🙂

Where do I start?? They feel light and glorious, glide across my lips and don’t tug at all. Plus, they last all day long and, unlike so many other lip pencils out there, they don’t dry out my lips. I’d almost call them borderline hydrating.

They just might be the most comfortable lip pencils I’ve ever worn.

Smoky, Cool and Shimmery Plum With the Tarte Pretty Paintbox Set, Bite Beauty Cashew and MAC Dancing Flowers

November 14th, 2016 by Karen 8 Comments

Feeling plummy today with Tarte’s Pretty Paintbox from the holiday 2016 collection

Look. At. This. Makeup.

Where was a going that I needed to put on makeup like this? I don’t know… I don’t think I was going anywhere. I wish I could say that I was going out to dinner or something, but I think the most exciting thing I did while I was wearing this look was take out the trash…

I did run into my neighbor, though, and we talked about her dog a little, so at least somebody got to see the fruit of my labor IRL.

I’m wearing the Bite Beauty Multistick in Cashew here, and I tell you — it’s the best color! It’s underneath a bunch of things on my lids. I sort of used it as an eyeshadow lid primer.

I think it’s SO beautiful, especially with colors like the ones I’m wearing.

Eyes: Bite Beauty Cashew Multi-Stick, Tarte Pretty Paintbox eyeshadows (Van Gogh With It in the crease, and First Impressionism, Hot MOMA and Get Surreal mixed on the lids), Tarte Tarteist Black Eyeliner (from the Wingworkers holiday set), Tarte Tartiest Mascara (from Pretty Paintbox)

Cheeks: Moment blush, Authentic highlighter and Unique bronzer from Tarte Pretty Paintbox

Lips: Dancing Flowers from the MAC Nutcracker Sweet Retro Matte Plum Kit

I’m wearing kind of a rosy taupe-ish brown in my crease, and there’s some shimmery cool-toned purplish gray action happening on my lids that I made by mixing a bunch of colors in this Tarte palette (I marked them with hearts down below).

I grabbed a bunch of shades with the same brush, buffed them on the back of my hand, and then popped them on my lid.

It’s just a phase I’m going through. I like making my own colors. It makes me feel like I’m a mad scientist in a beauty lab or something…

OK, so, my lid color is very cool toned, but I think it balances with the warmth of the browns in my crease. I like that juxtaposition, but of course you could totally stick to one or the other using just cool-toned shadows or warm-toned shadows, and still do a look like this.

I’m Nuts About the Bite Beauty Cashew Multistick

November 14th, 2016 by Karen 7 Comments

Current favorite eyeshadow base: Bite Beauty Cashew!

Girl, this is the best color…although I don’t know what it has to do with cashews.

It did give me an excuse to eat some shortly after I took this picture…

You might remember the $24 Bite Beauty Multisticks from earlier this fall when they came out in a bunch of colors. You can use them on your lids, your cheeks and/or your lips, and this particular shade, Cashew, is a warm rosy mauve.

I like to use it as an eyeshadow base for cooler-toned purple and gray eyeshadows — especially shimmery purples and grays — but I think it also looks really pretty on its own.

Sometimes on minimal makeup days, I’ll just stick this on my lids directly with the stick and kind of draw on my lids, which is weird and fun at the same time. Then I’ll use either a finger or a tapered brush to buff out the edges.

After that, I’ll curl my lashes and tightline my upper lash line with black liner, and that’s it. Easy and it looks natural.

If you want to do more than that, you could take whatever shimmery purplish gray shadow is rocking your world at the moment, and the one I love right now is MAC Extra Dimension Eye Shadow in Fathoms Deep (it’s what I’m wearing with Cashew in the second pic — the one where I’m wearing a bit more makeup), and just pop that right on top. Then blend them together.

The Hookup: Bite Beauty Papaya and NARS Dolce Vita

October 4th, 2016 by Karen 21 Comments

Magic happens when you wear Bite Beauty Multistick in Papaya and NARS Blush in Dolce Vita together

I’m thinking about starting a series on the blog called “The Hookup…”

No, it does not sound nasty! 🙂 It’s not like nasty Hollywood hookups, although it does freak me out a little when I hear teenagers say the word “hookup.”

The idea is product pairings for things that I like to wear together, because I figure, there are so many products out there, and it’s not always easy to find stuff that looks good together.

In the look I’m wearing here, I’m using Bite Beauty Multistick in Papaya, which you can use as an eyeshadow, blush and a lipstick, and I’m wearing it as both a blush and a lipstick.

I’ve paired it with NARS Dolce Vita blush, which is one of my favorite NARS blushes of all time. In fact, I think it was the first (or the second?) NARS blush I ever bought, but don’t quote me on that.

Anyway, both have rosy tones, but Dolce Vita has a little more gold in it, and I think it goes great with Papaya.

You could wear it as a blush and use Papaya as a lipstick, or use Papaya as a cream blush and apply Dolce Vita on top, which is how I’m using it here.

I love this combo, and I think it’s really pretty with neutral eyes.

Cat lady life, yo!

What’s one of your favorite product hookups right meow?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The Day in Beauty Vol. 23: I Love the ’90s and Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Whiskey

July 23rd, 2016 by Karen 23 Comments

Wearing Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Whiskey

Good morning, glory! Rise and shine! 🙂

This is Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Whiskey ($26), a dark reddish brown with a satin finish, and it’s very much like something I would have worn back in the day while listening to the fabulous vocal stylings of Color Me Badd and Coolio.

YEAH! I’m headed to an I Love the ’90s concert tonight, so I’m wearing a ’90s-style lipstick this morning to get in the spirit.

Both Color Me Badd and Coolio are performing at the concert, along with (wait for it!) Vanilla Ice (OMG), Tone Loc, Rob Base and Young MC.

The concert is in the town of Jackson, California, east of Sacramanto — HELLOOOO, JACKSON! — so if you’re out that way, wassup? I’ll be in your neck of the woods tonight!

Anyway, that’s my big adventure this weekend.

Bite Beauty Sweet & Savory Collection

Whiskey, by the way, is from the Bite Beauty Sweet and Savory Collection of six Amuse Bouche Lipsticks that came out last spring, but there are more than 40 Amuse Bouche Lipsticks total in the Bite Beauty line, so it’s very extensive (they’re $26 each).

The Amuse Bouche Lipsticks made a big splash last spring when they arrived on counters. They’re bold, lightweight and creamy with an uber-hydrating formula (each lippie contains 12 edible oils), and they’re absolutely lovely.

Try $22 Benefit Gimme Brow Brow-Volumizing Fiber Gel for Fuller-Looking Brows

September 26th, 2013 by Karen 19 Comments

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium
Wearing Benefit’s Gimme Brow in Light/Medium in my brows

Gimme brows.

Gimme brows, I said!

That’s like a beauty lover’s battle cry… “Gimme brows, dagnabbit!” 🙂

Mine have grown out quite a bit since last spring, which is when I decided to leave them to their natural tendencies.

Well, mostly natural. I still tweeze a stray hair every now and then, just to keep myself from looking like a tiny Sasquatch, but for the most part, I let them go wild.

I want my brows so lush, full and bold that passersby do double-takes and say to themselves, “Damn! That girl’s got BROWS!”

Benefit’s new Gimme Brow Brow-Volumizing Fiber Gel ($22) got my attention because of that word, “Volumizing”

I actually don’t know if volumizing is a real word outside of haircare and mascara circles, but it sounds good, doesn’t it?

Vol-yume-eye-zing.

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium

Cute little tube too, yeah? And that mini brush? It’s designed to be very precise.

The brush-on waterproof gel formula adheres to both hair and skin and comes in two build-able, natural-looking shades — Light/Medium and Medium/Deep — and you can apply them in multiple layers to strengthen the look.

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium

With brow fillers, I typically go a few shades lighter than my natural brow color because I think that looks less stark and obvious. That’s why I thought Light/Medium would be better for my fuzzy little caterpillars…

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium

Unfortunately, I think it turned out to be a tad too light for me, but I still found a lot to like.

Benefit Gimme Brow swatch in Light/Medium
Swatch of Light/Medium…

The gel formula is highly pigmented and really adheres to hair and skin with firm hold. In fact, I think if I wanted to, I could build a bold brow with just this alone, and it would last all day.

None of that funky crunchiness, either, that accompanies some brow gels. This formula holds firm but doesn’t get crunchy.

Benefit Gimme Brow in Light/Medium
Naked brows, babe!
