Sephora Adventures: Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo, Drunk Elephant Tinted Umbra Tinte Daily Defense, and Pinrose Perfumes

May 23rd, 2017 by Karen 7 Comments

Practicing her #RBF

I swear, my last trip to Sephora was Connor’s idea. If she looks a little crabby in this picture, it’s because she’s practicing her #RBF (resting baby face).

I went to grab a couple things I’ve been wanting to try from my lust list, and speaking of that, that list has been exercising my wallet in ways I did not anticipate, LOL!

First, there’s this clarifying Bumble and Bumble Sunday Shampoo.

Smells like: oranges, and the beach

I had a a lot of product buildup in my hair after using a Klorane shampoo and mask, and Sunday Shampoo, which I used on Saturday (such a rebel!), got my hair feeling normal again. Buuuuuut, I still think I’m going to return it, because I read on the Sephora website (and don’t ask my why this didn’t sink in beforehand) that it isn’t recommended for color-treated hair, which I have.

Oh, well… It was fun while it lasted.

I do like the idea using a clarifying shampoo every so often to remove buildup from dry shampoo and other hair products, so I’m thinking about exchanging it for a shampoo by Briogio, a natural hair care line at Sephora, called Be Gentle, Be Kind Green Tea Clarifying Shampoo. It’s $24, so about the same price as the Bumble shampoo, which is $25, but it’s supposed to safe for color-treated hair.

I hope it smells good. 🙂

Also, while I was there, I picked up a tube of new Drunk Elephant Umbra Tinte Physical Daily Defense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30 ($36) with 20% zinc oxide.

Zinc oxide usually leaves a white cast on darker skin, but this one doesn’t! It’s really neat. I thought it would be too deep or peachy for me, but it isn’t. I can’t see it at all, which is great, and there’s no white cast! I used it on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and my skin really likes it so far. It has a light mousse-y texture, so it absorbs quickly, and I don’t have to sit there working it in for days and days. Plus, it isn’t sticky, so it doesn’t leave my neck feeling gross, and it layers under foundation well.

My Hair Wants to Run Wild and Free! — and I’m Cool With That

September 13th, 2016 by Karen 19 Comments

Gonna let this hair run wild and free!

Sleek and structured is fun sometimes, especially when you get a new set of bangs, but I’ve realized that my hair wants to figuratively go where the wild things are, so if it wants to naturally go wavy and run free, I’m totally down.

For the wavy, “wild thing” look in these pics, I used two beachy wave products from Bumble and Bumble.

I started by washing my hair and drying it with my trusty Aquis Hair Towel.

Then I sprayed Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion ($29) on it from mid-shaft to the ends before letting my hair air dry.

Surf Infusion has been around a while. It’s similar to the O.G. Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray for beachy waves, but instead of giving your hair a matte finish with waves that have a slightly crunchy texture, it leaves a sheen and coaxes your hair into waves that are soft to the touch.

To use it, spray it on damp hair, and let it air dry to do its thang.

For this look, after my hair completely “air dried,” I created the loose waves on the top layers with a ghd Classic Curl Iron. Then I sprayed Bumble and Bumble Surf Foam Spray Blow Dry on top for texture and used my fingers to softly scrunch the product through the top layers.

Late Summer Sephora Haul!

August 24th, 2015 by Karen 17 Comments

My No. 1 rule when I shop at Sephora is to never, EVER walk around the store with a basket, because if I do, I’ll just keep dropping more and more things into it until eventually — whoops! — there goes all my fun money for the next few months.

I tell myself that I can only leave the store with what I can physically carry in my hands, but that doesn’t always work… You’d be amazed at how much stuff a short Filipino girl can carry, haha! 🙂

On my last trip I grabbed a few things — some re-stocks, some new things I’ve been wanting to try and at least one doodad (maybe two).

As always, my friend, thank you for watching.

Products mentioned

  • NARS Pure Radiant Creamy Concealer in Biscuit ($29)
  • Sephora Collection Tidy: Detangling Comb ($8)
  • Tweezerman Smooth Finish Facial Hair Remover ($20)
  • YSL Fusion Ink Foundation in BD 50 Warm Honey ($60)
  • Clarins Multi-Active Day Early Wrinkle Correction Cream All Skin Types ($59)
  • BeautyBlender Pro ($20)
  • BeautyBlender Solid Cleanser ($16)
  • Bumble & Bumble Don’t Blow It ($30)

Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion Oil and Salt-Infused Spray Waves Hello to Volume and Goodbye to Crispy Hair

June 22nd, 2015 by Karen 28 Comments

Bumble and Bumble Surf Infusion oil and salt-infused spray for soft, touchable waves

I love beachy wave sprays, but I do NOT love that crispy thing that many of them do to mah hurr.

Beachy waves = yes. Crunchy hair = nooo.

Apparently, I am not alone in this tale of beachy woe because Bumble and Bumble whipped up a solution. Their new Surf Infusion oil and sale-infused spray coaxes coifs into shiny, beachy waves without “dat crunchy feeling.” This is compared to most of the beachy wave sprays I’ve tried, which leave behind a matte finish and hair that feels a tad gritty.

Kauai, Day 3: Bumble and Bumble and a Boat Called Sea Breeze

April 29th, 2012 by Karen 18 Comments

The boat day.

Kauai’s majestic Nā Pali Coast beckoned El Hub and I, so we embarked upon a 4-hour tour!

Since I knew the trip called for high winds, I didn’t bring along my new hat (by the way, I found it at Target for $12!), but I still wanted something to protect my new highlights.

Enter the new Bumble and Bumble Color Minded Line. All three pieces here are TSA friendly (2 ounces apiece). You get a shampoo, conditioner and a UV Protective Styling Balm for $28. The products have a light floral scent that I like, and the shampoo and conditioner keep my knotty hair under control.

But most importantly, they’re keeping my highlights from getting brassy.

I’ve been bringing the UV Protective Styling Balm with me everywhere, including on the boat yesterday, and reapplying after each dip in the water.

Also picked up a bottle of Ocean Potion Aloe Gel to help soothe El Hub’s sunburned skin (NOTE: He’s not crazy about the Neutrogena spray sunscreen I mentioned the other day).

Ocean Potion is one of the few topical drugstore aloe gels I’ve found that doesn’t list alcohol, which can be quite drying, high up on the list of ingredients. Aloe is the third ingredient on the list; the first two are water and glycerin.

I discovered it a few trips back and just love the stuff.

Onward to the Nā Pali Coast!

Our trusty ocean steed: the Sea Breeze.

Just look at those cliffs… Some are more than a thousand feet high, straight down to the ocean.

During the winter months, huge swells buffet the Hawaiian islands, and waves as high as 70 feet crash against those cliffs.
