Dolce & Gabbana

Item No. 1 on My Beauty Bucket List Takes Us to a Sicilian Seaside Town: Say “Ti Adoro!” to the Five Vibrant, Energetic Nail Polishes in the Dolce & Gabbana Love in Taormina Collection

June 25th, 2013 by Karen 23 Comments

Dolce & Gabbana Love In Taormina Collection 2
Say “Ciao!” to the five new nail polishes in the Dolce & Gabbana Love In Taormina collection, docking at U.S. ports next month.

I have a new list.

Because, you know, what I really needed in my life was a new list to go with the many lists I already have.

Some of my other lists…

  • 9 Things: People Never Told Me
  • 9 Things: Lessons Learned from Going Away to College
  • 9 Things: I Would Like to Try
  • 9 Things: Times You Took a Chance
  • 9 Things: I Feel Like I’m Always…
  • 9 Things: Simple Pleasures (Summer and Otherwise)
  • 9 Things I Never Expected

This new list is called my “Beauty Bucket List,” and only beauty-related things that border on outrageous and/or far-fetched are allowed to go on it.

That’s because it’s a bucket list, not a grocery list, so I figure the things I add to it should be a little out there, ya know? I mean, what’s the point in daydreaming, if we aren’t going to dream big?

Today I’m adding my first item to it…

Dolce & Gabbana Love In Taormina Collection Swatches

1. To wear the five new Dolce & Gabbana nail polishes from the Love in Taormina collection actually in the town of Taormina

And that means holiday in Sicily! 🙂

I’m still working out whether I should wear one color per day while I’m there (this is still in the fantasy planning stages, BTW) or all five colors on my fingers at the same time.

I do know that I don’t want to mix colors on my toes, because whenever I do that I look like I have monkey feet…

Ideally, the trip would take place in summer, since the Love in Taormina collection was inspired by flowers that are supposed to bloom in the summertime there.

I’d try to find a sun-dappled garden somewhere, and look for flowers in the same shades as my freshly painted nails.

And eat gelato…

Lots and lots of gelato.

Ideally, my hair will also look great, and I won’t be dressed like a 12-year-old skater boy.

It’s a floral affair

What lovely colors.

I really can see the floral influences in the shades, and when I see them on my nails, I almost feel like I’m there, in Taormina, standing on the sidewalk by a cobblestone street to admire a lush garden, and take a break from my busy Italian holiday…

But unlike gelato, these colors aren’t necessarily sweet, not like the desaturated pastel florals you’d find on Laura Ashly prints or Jessica McClintock dresses from the 1980s.

No, these aren’t exactly the kinds of colors one imagines herself wearing for a chaste peck on the cheek. I think these are more intense than that, like when your lover grabs your hand, and a jolt of electricity shoots up your arm. Bzzzz! And you feel like jumping his/her bones right there.

These vibrant, energetic colors are a little on the lusty side, but that’s Dolce & Gabbana. 🙂 They aren’t known for prim and proper.

These pigments are CAH-RAY-ZAY!

I realized just how pigmented these polishes are last night after my nightly shower…

Yeah, who paints their paws right before bed? Answer: this girl.

With these as pigmented, opaque and smooth as they are, you could probably get away with applying a single thick coat or two lighter ones. Either way, though, you’re covered. Your nails should be completely covered.

Like a trip through the seasons from spring to summer and fall

The five new nail polish shades from the Dolce & Gabbana Love In Taormina collection, coming next month

The new Dolce & Gabbana Love in Taormina collection colors were inspired by local flowers that grow in the Sicilian town of Taormina, and based on these nail polishes, there must be some bright flowers out there!

Nails make out like bandits in the 17-piece release. There are five new shades, two new top coats (one matte and one shiny) and a base coat. The rest of the collection consists of repromoted pieces for nails, eyes, lips and cheeks.

Unsung Makeup Heroes: Dolce & Gabbana Contrasts Eyeshadow Quad

June 18th, 2013 by Karen 45 Comments

Dolce Gabbana Contrasts
Wearing the Dolce & Gabbana Contrasts Eyeshadow Quad

contrast n. |kon-trast|
noun
1 The state of being strikingly different from something else, typically something in juxtaposition or close association : tabs has been unusually nice to me today, in startling contrast to his behavior yesterday.

contrast v. |kon-trast|
verb
2 Differ strikingly : contrast my hair today with my hair of the 1990s, and be like whoa!

Do you ever think about how you got your name, or do you know the actual story?

Dolce & Gabbana’s Contrasts Eyeshadow quad has me thinking about names…

Dolce & Gabbana Contrasts Eyeshadow Quad 2

KarenI was named after the actress Karen Black, but my mom almost named me Stephanie, which I can’t even begin to imagine… Not that I don’t like the name. I do. It’s just that when I look in the mirror, I don’t see a Stephanie, Steph or Steffie. Nope. Does not compute.

Funny, though, that last weekend I met a gal at the Bliss Spa who said that she didn’t think I looked like a Karen. She thought maybe a Leah, Leilani or a Lorelei. Something with an L, and I can kinda see that. Definitely more than Stephanie.

Dolce & Gabbana Contrasts Eyeshadow Quad 3

Anywho, I think whoever named Dolce & Gabbana’s Constrasts quad knocked it out of the park, since it really is strikingly different from the other everyday quads in my stash of staples.

If I could, I’d give that gal/guy a banana split with extra scoops of ice cream, whipped cream and cherries, because they nailed it!

And then, if he/she wanted, I’d go running with them, so we could burn off the calories and talk more about Constrasts. 🙂

The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorite permanent collection products from a variety of bodacious beauty brands.

This quad is a total workhorse, one I could easily see myself wearing daily, and yet it’s unlike the usual brown/beige/taupe/gray neutral suspects we see a lot.

Starting with the colors, ohmigosh! Inside the golden compact hides four potently pigmented powder shadows that you can easily take from day to night — a golden pinkish peach (a favorite for dusting all over my lids when I’m in a hurry because it brightens everything up), a pinkish beige, a warm purple and a plummy dark chocolate.

Versatile and flattering on many different skin tones, and just hella pretty.

Unsung Makeup Heroes: Dolce & Gabbana Peach Blush

June 11th, 2013 by Karen 31 Comments

Dolce & Gabbana Peach Blush
Wearing Dolce & Gabbana Peach Blush ($45) on my cheeks

A couple years ago I wore this blush all the time. Almost daily.

Dolce & Gabbana Peach was my jam!

Actually, now that I think about it, it still is, and if I ever had to commit to just one blush for the rest of my life (the horror!), this could be it.

Boy, that sure would be tough, though… Every day seems to bring a pretty, new pan to discover/devour.

Dolce & Gabbana Peach Blush 3

But I’ve always come back to Peach. It just never looks fake or heavy-handed. And it blends easily, looks great layered with bronzer or all by itself alone, and it lasts all day long, too.

Among peach blushes, that’s the total package right there.

Hot Summer Makeup Trends From Christian McCulloch, Dolce & Gabbana’s New National Makeup Artist

May 31st, 2013 by Karen 13 Comments

Dolce & Gabbana National Makeup Artist Christian McCulloch
Dolce & Gabbana’s Christian McCulloch with the new True Monica summer collection, available now at Saks Fifth Avenue stores and online

I like Christian McCulloch, Dolce & Gabbana’s new National Makeup Artist, and not just because he’s charming and tall, or has a really cool Australian accent, or because he complimented me on my brows.

CHRISTIAN MCCULLOCH: Did you do these yourself? — or do you go somewhere to get them done?

ME: I do them myself because I have weird control issues… [SIDE NOTE: I really need to stop telling this to strangers.]

CM: They’re perfect!

ME: For real??

When a fun, handsome guy who clearly loves makeup and (is also kind of a ham) whom celebrities like Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Emma Stone and Jessica Biel have on speed dial tells you that your brows aren’t a total train wreck, yeah, it tends to make your day. 🙂

Talking trends with Christian

While we talked about summer and summer makeup trends today at the Dolce & Gabbana makeup counter at Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco, Christian often stopped mid-sentence to grab a quad, lipstick or pencil, swatch it on the back of his hand, and start talking so fast about it that I almost couldn’t keep up!

A few of Christian’s top summer trends…

1. Pale, shimmery eyes

This summer, Christian loves the look of nude, shimmery shadows on lids — shades like champagne, and shimmery pinks like the pale pink from the Fabulous Smooth Colour Quad ($59).

Then, to balance the nude eye and round out the look, he likes to add mascara, liquid liner, bronzer, blush and a bright lip. “It’s easy and fresh,” he says.

2. Plum lips

If you’re considering bold colors this year but want something other than the usual summer suspects like coral and pink, try plum lips.

“Plum lips pump up your look,” says Christian, “and when the color wears off, it looks like a stain.”

His go-to plum from the Dolce & Gabbana line? Shine Lipstick in Precious ($32).

“I love to use color, and I see it as an accessory. It’s like wearing a great pair of earrings or a great scarf. It depends on what you’re wearing and how you put it all together.”
— Christian McCulloch

3. Flawless skin

Flawless-looking skin is in this summer, and to get the look without a lot of work, Christian recommends Dolce & Gabbana’s new Perfect Matte Liquid Foundation ($66), an oil-control liquid formula with a velvety finish that’s neither too shiny nor matte.

“I don’t necessarily feel like the makeup needs to be the first thing you notice about a woman. It’s just one element of the whole package.”
— Christian McCulloch

“It’s a one-step product,” Christian says of Perfect Matte, “and you don’t need to layer powder on top of it.” He only applies it where you need a little extra coverage.

And because it contains SPF 20, it’s great for this time of year.

What does Christian recommend every woman have in her makeup bag?

  • Dolce & Gabbana’s Secret Eyes Mascara ($30): “This is what I use on photo shoots because I can fan out each lash from root to tip. It’s a detail mascara.”
  • Dolce & Gabbana’s Smokey and Contrast Quads ($59 each): “These are look-good-on-everyone colors and my go-to’s for neutral, defined eyes.”
  • Dolce & Gabbana Crayon Intense Eyeliner in Chocolate ($30): “It’s halfway between brown and black. Great for smokey eyes.”
  • Dolce & Gabbana Luminous Cheek Color in Peach ($45): “The perfect peachy pink blush.”
