A MAC Styleseeker Makeup Tutorial: Brown, Gold and Purple Cat Eyes With Red Cheeks and Bronze Lips

August 17th, 2012 by Karen 55 Comments

MAC Styleseeker Tutorial

Guess what, fellow style seekers! The MAC Styleseeker collection is now available online (yay!), and I thought it might be fun to do a quick tutorial this afternoon with a few of the pieces (complete with optional Victoria’s Secret wind tunnel effect).

mac styleseeker tutorial side

The 24-piece collection contains a mix of rich, warm bronzes, purples, browns and reds punctuated by a smattering of lighter pinks, corals and beige shades.

Something about it just says, “globe trekker” to me and makes me want to check on airfares to Southeast Asia for fall, LOL!

But seriously, this look features a matte brown, and a shimmery golden orange eyeshadow, and a dark purple cat eyeliner on the eyes; a surprisingly wearable red blush on the cheeks; and a bronze gloss on my lips.

Here are the Styleseeker pieces I used…

  • Eyeshadow X 2 in Marche Aux Puces (includes two powder shadows, the chestnut brown matte Indie Spirit and the mid-tone golden orange Chessa), $27.50
  • Fluidline in Dark Diversion (a blackened plum with a pearl finish), $15
  • Fluidline in Blacktrack (a matte black), $15
  • Powder Blush in Hidden Treasure (a rich burned red with a satin finish), $20
  • Lipglass in Restless (a dark burned bronze), $15

The eyes

mac styleseeker tutorial 2

I started with my eyes, using a finger to spread MAC Paint Pot in Quite Natural, a creamy matte brown eyeshadow, on my eyelids. The cream shadow acts as an intensifying base for the other eyeshadows I’ll apply on top.

Then, I grabbed some of Indie Spirit, the brown shade from the Eyeshadow X 2 Duo in Marche Aux Puces, with a MAC 217 Blending Brush, and applied it on my lids, concentrating most of the color on my lash line, and fading as I moved up.

After that, I took what was left on the brush and ran it along my lower lash line.

Next up, shimmer. Using a MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush, I applied Chessa, the shimmery golden orange shade from the same duo, directly on top of the brown shadow on my lids.

MAC Unsung Heroes: Bare Study Paint Pot

August 13th, 2012 by Karen 42 Comments

mac bare study paint pot

What delivers bright-eyed, bushy-tailed looks in less than a minute and works as a great base for all of your favorite gold and beige eyeshadows? — heck, for most of the other colors in your eyeshadow collection, too?

Wait — before you answer, have you met MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study?

Hint-hint. 🙂

MAC Bare Study Paint Pot: How to fake getting eight hours of sleep in 30 seconds or less

One of those super easy “Wake me up before you go-go” shades, to borrow a reference from Wham, this $18.50 golden beige cream shadow gives me heart palpitations (but I’m told this kind aren’t dangerous).

Bare Study is perfect for last-minute appointments. All I do is pat a small amount on my lids and blend out the edges with a finger, coat my lashes with one or two quick layers of mascara, and treat my lips to a bright lipstick, and it’s off to the farmers’ market for me!

The soft, light-reflecting pearl finish makes me look almost like I got a good night’s sleep. Little would anyone know I spent half the night awake (and biting my nails) while reading the last half of Angelfall (highly recommended if you liked The Hunger Games).

A shade for makeup lovers of all levels of experience

If you’re shy about wearing a lot of color on your eyes, try a dash of Bare Study on your lids paired with your favorite eyeliner, and then maybe one day if/when you felt a little more confident about eye color (but still not gung-ho), you could try layering it under neutrals like brown, beige or gray.

If, instead, you’re all about eye color, then Bare Study has other strengths you might like. For one, it loves to layer with a wide variety of colors.

Like the Sun Rising in the East, Your Lips Will Shimmer Wearing One of the 15 Moisturizing Cremesheen Lipsticks and Glosses in the New MAC Cremesheen + Pearl Collection

August 7th, 2012 by Karen 22 Comments

MAC Coral Bliss Cremesheen
Wearing MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Coral Bliss

MAC went east — faaar east — for the 15 modern pinks, nudes and corals in their new Cremesheen + Pearl collection of Cremesheen Glasses and Lipsticks with a light-reflecting finish.

Each of the eight new Cremesheen Lipsticks ($15 each) and seven Cremesheen Glasses ($19.50 each) in the Asian-inspired collection contain crushed pearl for shiny, glossy lips with a luminous glow. They arrive on North American shores August 9 (and coming to international locales this September), but if you can’t/don’t want to wait that long, they’re actually available now online.

Looking for the right light-reflecting lips to go with your favorite bold eye look? MAC’s got ya covered. 🙂

Here’s a quick look at six of the new shades. I can’t wait to wear some of these with smokey eyes!

I LOVE the product names and the overall vibe. It reminds me of the last time I went to the cherry blossom festival in SF’s Japan Town. My favorites here are probably the comfortable Cremesheen Glasses because of how moisturizing they are. Thinner than the Lipglasses and non-sticky, too, they just feel really, really great on my lips. Whenever I travel by plane, I always bring a moisturizing Cremesheen along to help my lips cope with the dry, recycled air.
