The Sonia Kashuk Holiday 2014 Collection Proves It’s the Golden Age of Luxurious, Affordable Makeup

November 19th, 2014 by Karen 16 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Holiday 2014

Sonia Kashuk’s Art Deco-inspired holiday 2014 collection might give you ideas…

…ideas like, “Whee! Look at me! I’m a flapper in The Great Gatsby, and I’m doing the Charleston!” Then you start dancing around your office, but you pull an inner thigh muscle when you kick a little higher than you should have, and from that day forward, you rue the day you danced the Charleston in your office without properly stretching beforehand.

Just an FYI! 🙂

Sonia’s latest limited edition collection does make me want to kick up my heels, it’s true. The seven pieces look totally expensive, but all but one of them are less than $20 each.

Where Do All the Bobby Pins Go? (And a Mini Target Haul)

October 21st, 2014 by Karen 41 Comments

Goody Bobby Pins

Goody Bobby Pins

So…where do all the bobby pins go?

Million-dollar question, right?

Over the course of my 39 years, I bet I’ve purchased hundreds — no, thousands — of bobby pins.

Thousands.

And yet right now I can only find three of them.

Why is that? Where do they go? It’s like I live with an invisible bobby pin monster that only comes out at night.

Sometimes I really wish Tabs could talk… He’d probably totally freak out. “YES! FINALLY! I’ve been trying to tell you FOR YEARS! There IS a monster, and it takes all of the bobby pins and my food and my toys and then it goes into the closet!”

LOL!

I actually just bought this pack of 50 Goody Bobby Pins last weekend from Target, and a quarter of them have already disappeared. I seriously doubt anyone will ever see any of them again. It was fun while it lasted, y’all!

(NO, SERIOUSLY, WHERE DO THEY GO!?)

In what will probably turn out to be just another sorry attempt to break my scrunchie habit (hey, I’m trying), I also picked up a sock bun kit by Mia Beauty, a six-pack of Medium Goody Claw Clips…

…and this Sonia Kashuk Lash & Brow Comb, because it looked great for travel, and you just never know when you’ll face an emergency brow or lash situation that needs urgent attention (a lesson I learned the hard way).

Sonia Kashuk’s Chic Defining Contour Stick, a Near-Dupe for the NARS Cappadoce Matte Multiple, Saves Dollars While Defining Cheekbones

September 2nd, 2014 by Karen 20 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Chic Defining Stick
The new $10.99 Sonia Kashuk Chic Defining Stick

Ring-a-ling! Ring-a-ling!

I’ll get it! That’s the sound of the NARS dupe alert. 🙂

In this case, it’s chiming for Sonia Kashuk’s new $10.99 Chic Defining Contour Stick, a near dupe of my beloved (but MUCH more expensive) $39 NARS Cappadoce Matte Multiple.

Sonia Kashuk Chic Defining Stick
The Sonia Kashuk Chic Defining Stick ($10.99)

Both baked golden brown cream sticks have a matte finish (here are swatches of NARS Cappadoce), and both of them can quickly sculpt cheekbones that would rival Johnny Depp’s circa the O.G. 21 Jump Street era.

Both of them are also easy to blend on bare skin or atop foundation — probably due to how lightweight and thin they are, which is great, because it keeps my skin from feeling like it’s suffocating under an inch of plaster.

Where the two differ, most obviously, is price ($10.99 versus $39), but also in the shape of the tip. The Multiple’s is huskier, wider and flatter, and it covers more surface area while sitting flush against the skin, whereas the tip on Sonia’s Chic Defining Stick has a slightly smaller (but still husky), rounded, more precise tip that seems to fit the space under my cheekbones a bit better.

For Comfort and Eye-Catching Color, Try Sonia Kashuk’s $8.99 Lustrous Shine Lip Crayons

September 1st, 2014 by Karen 10 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Lustrous Shine Lip Crayon in Peony

Yet one more reason to go fan-girl over Sonia Kashuk: the unfathomably high levels of pigment in her new Lustrous Shine Lip Crayons.

I can’t believe these $8.99 retractable crayons aren’t more expensive. Smooth, silky and lightweight like a lip balm, they remind me a lot of pricier products from Too Faced and Benefit.

The Sonia Kashuk Eye Palette in Sweet Nothings Is Sweet on Lids

August 26th, 2014 by Karen 6 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Eye Palette in Sweet Nothings

Sonia Kashuk Eye Palette in Sweet Nothings

If Sonia Kashuk’s latest palette could talk, it would whisper sweet nothings…to your lids.

“Hello, my darling. You’re looking lovely tonight.”

“My, what beautiful lashes you have. They’re so lush and curly.”

“In a word, stunning. You have the curviest crease I’ve ever seen.

In a mix of matte and shimmers, the six subtle white, beige and taupe shades that comprise Sonia’s Sweet Nothings Eye Palette ($14.95) whisper a story about color.

“We’re perfect for highlighting brow bones,” they say, “among our other talents.”

This Sweet Nothing is looking for love at Target stores and online at target.com.

Shh… Hush now. 🙂

Eyes Go Au Naturel With the Bare Necessities in Sonia Kashuk’s New Eyeshadow Palette

August 20th, 2014 by Karen 14 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Bare Necessities Eyeshadow Palette (1)

Sonia Kashuk Bare Necessities Eyeshadow Palette (2)

Sometimes you run into an eyeshadow palette that you just know you’re going to be all over like a plus-size tabby on an open can of gravy.

That’s how I am about Sonia Kashuk’s new Eyeshadow Palette in Bare Necessities ($14.29).

It houses six nude powder eyeshadows, and get this — there are a couple of mattes, too, so it’s not just shimmer town as far as the eye can see.

I really like the color temps here. None of the colors are too warm or cool, so most gals (and dudes) should be able to rock ’em.

Oh, and the palette? It’s only $14.29.

HOLLA! 🙂

Look for it at Target stores.

With the Weather Warming Up, Sonia Kashuk’s New Spring 2014 Collection (and Some of Her Face Products From Fall) Hit Right on Target

March 12th, 2014 by Karen 22 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Spring 2014
Nods to warmer days ahead with Sonia Kashuk Spring 2014 (and some Fall 2013 warm weather faves)

Just got back from a walk with Sonia! 🙂

And we’re walking…

You know, Sonia Kashuk?

No, not in person, silly! But she was with me in spirit, as I was wearing some products from her new spring line.

They’re available right now at Target stores and target.com.

Her spring collection is HUGE this year — 37 pieces total.

Here are the ones I wore today, along with some fall face products (permanent collection) that seemed perfect for the warm weather we’re having.

Eye Shadow Quad in Up in Smoke ($13.69, spring)

Sonia Kashuk Up In Smoke Eye Shadow Quad
Eye Shadow Quad in Up in Smoke ($13.69)

One of three new quads added to the family this spring. The other two are called Prima Ballerina (with rose and lavender shades) and Island Dreams (blues and greens).

Up In Smoke’s beige, taupe, gray and charcoal struck me as fall colors at first, but this is makeup, and there are no rules. 🙂 Perfect for when you want to wear a smokey eye while everybody else is rocking pastels.

With super shimmery, buttery soft shadows that seem more expensive than they really are, it reminds me of a disco dancing version of Tom Ford’s She Wolf trio.

Pearlescence Longwear Creme Shadows in Diamond and Quartz ($8.99 each, spring)

My favorite thing from Sonia’s spring collection so far! These are completely new additions to the line.

Despite being shimmery metallics, they stay away from my fine lines (which I really appreciate). Sonia claims these smooth pigments actually help eyes look brighter and more youthful, and ya know? Maybe. I definitely do feel like my eyes look younger and more alert when I wear ’em.

They’re easy to apply with fingers or a brush and don’t crease or move once they’re on my lids.

Joining the shades shown here, pale champagne Diamond and rosy Quartz, are a bronzy brown called Tiger’s Eye and an icy taupe called Moonstone.

Satin Luxe Lip Colour SPF 16 in Pink Buff and Very Berry ($9.99, spring)

Sonia Kashuk’s Yellow Alluriana Body Lotion Is Putting a Spring in My Step and Grapefruit on My Mind

February 17th, 2014 by Karen 13 Comments

Oh, winter…

You saucy minx.

For a while there, you had me under your spell. You lured me in with those crisp December mornings and snuggle sessions with El Hub, me and Tabs on the couch, then kept me close with those cozy holiday evenings at home in front of the crackling yule log channel on TV.

Now though…? Now you’re just so damned cold, and I’m totally over you.

Spring can’t get here soon enough. I’ve even been trying to accelerate the process, primarily through the strategic use of bath and body products, particularly grapefruit scents, because, I don’t know why, but they just seem springy and fresh to me — like Sonia Kashuk’s grapefruit-scented Yellow Alluriana Body Lotion (has notes of grapefruit, lemon verbena and musk).

“An all-day moisture-replenishing wonder that helps restore skin’s suppleness, elasticity and tone with regenerative botanical oils and shea butter. Absorbs easily, leaving skin soft and smooth.”
— target.com

The fragrant, springy formula and mega moisturizing mojo temporarily erase my memories of winter and make me forget that I’m actually typing this sentence while wearing a down jacket, scarf and two pairs of socks.

Thankfully, Yellow Alluriana is available now for $8.99 exclusively at Target stores and target.com.

Random fun fact: “pamplemousse,” which is the word grapefruit in French, is my favorite word en Français!
