Hawaii Vacation Beauty Products

July 20th, 2023 by Karen 6 Comments

You’re extra beautiful today, Oahu!

Please excuse my paws in these photos. They’re extra t-rex because I was holding these beauty products over a railing with dear life, LOL!

Anywho, I always like seeing the beauty products people bring with them on vacation. Here’s what I’ve been using on this trip!

Sunscreen

  • Avene Solaire UV Mineral Multi-Defense Sunscreen and Tinted Sunscreen 50+ (both tinted and untinted)
  • Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 70 (Side note, my mom had this around which is why we’re using it, but it works but it’s a little sticky and uncomfortable, IMHO)
  • Banana Boat Sport Ultra SPF 50

Hair

  • Kenra Volume Spray Super Hold Finishing Spray 25
  • Bumble and Bumble Seaweed Air Dry Cream
  • I didn’t bring any shampoo, conditioner or body wash because the place we’re staying at has Malie Organics Mango Nectar hair and body products!

Body

  • Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant Anti-Perspirant Stick
  • Gilette Venus Razor
  • First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream Intense Hydration

Face

  • elf Skin Holy Hydration Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm
  • CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser for Normal to Oil Skin
  • Biossance Squalane + Omega Repair Cream
  • Kate Somerville Anti Bac Acne Clearing Lotion
  • Laneige Lip Mask

Hope things on your end are great!

What’s a Skin Care Product You Always Have Around?

March 22nd, 2023 by Karen 10 Comments

naturium plant cream

You know the ones I’m talking about — the tubes and jars, which, when you come to the last bits and bobs, cause a minor panic!

Because my skin is so dry, I would absolutely not be able to function without a rich moisturizer for my face. I’d probably short circuit; it’s that serious, ha ha ha!

Right now I’m really into Naturium Plant Ceramide Rich Moisture Cream. Before that I was all about Biossance Squalane + Omega Repair Cream. I’m probably switching to Naturium for good, though, because it’s more affordable at $25 for 1.7 ounces (Biossance is $60 for 1.6 ounces) and more moisturizing compared to the Biossance one.

I also always have benzoyl peroxide up in the mix. Kate Somerville Anti-Bac has been my fave for over a decade.

Hmm. I’m adding sunscreen to this list, too, but since I always have extra tubes around (seriously, I’m obsessed), I can’t imagine actually running low on sunscreen. Perish the thought!

How about you? What are the skincare products you never allow yourself to run out of?

Thoughts on Beauty, March 25, 2022

March 25th, 2022 by Karen 7 Comments

Yes, I still read magazines

I just got the latest “Allure” in the mail! Whenever I get a new magazine, the first thing I do is flip through all the pages, front to back, to look at the pictures. You know what I noticed in the April edition? So much diversity in the models!

Sure, most of them are still young, thin and have shockingly symmetrical features, but it’s still refreshing to see so many different skin tones. It’s a different scene compared to the magazines I read in my teens and early 20s! I’m crossing my fingers and toes in the hopes it’s not just a passing trend.

I also hope print magazines will still be around when Connor’s a teenager. I spent so much time in my formative years pouring over the pages of “YM,” “Seventeen,” “Jane” and “Sassy.” Good memories!

Tempting skin care sales

Lots of skin care I want need is on sale right now, like the 25% off anniversary sale at Colorscience. I’ve been playing chicken with my shopping cart for the past week.

Shopping Is My Cardio Sweater by Wildfox
Working on my fitness

On my list…

  • Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50: I’ve been itching to try this tinted mineral sunscreen. It adjusts to your skin tone when you rub it in! It comes in Fair, Medium, Tan and Deep shades and is made for all skin types.
  • Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF25 Collection: This three-piece cream stick kit for lips and cheeks includes shades you can wear as blush, lipstick and/or bronzer. It includes a nude with pink undertones, a shimmery bronze and a deep berry. All three have SPF 50! I love the idea of touching up my cheeks and lips while adding sun protection at the same time.
  • Total Eye 3-in-1 Renewal Therapy SPF 35: Available in four shades (Fair, Medium Original, Tan and Deep), this concealer does double duty as a mineral sunscreen.

The Colorscience sale ends on March 27, in case you’re interested.

Another sale I’m flirting with is at Biossance. Their annual 25% off spring sale is happening right now. I’m close to finishing the Squalane + Omega Repair Cream I bought during their Black Friday Sale (one full-size jar lasts me about four months), so I plan on buying another one, but I might as well try something new while I’m at it, right?

I’m also super curious about the Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum, the 100% Squalane Oil, the Squalane + Caffeine Toning Body Cream and the Squalane + Mega Repair Hand Cream.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — you know you’ve crossed a certain bridge when you get hella excited about skin care sales. LOL!

Not the kind of Chili you eat

Last but not least, I need to buy another tube of MAC Chili because I can’t find mine. 😭

Hot stuff! MAC Matte Lipstick in Chili

I just read in “Allure” that this brick red is a fan-favorite in 19 countries! Of course now I want to wear it and of course I can’t find it. GAH. If you have a tube of Chili in striking distance, do me a favor and slap some on, will ya? I will live vicariously through you.

Because I Can’t Be the Only One! Biossance and Avene Skin Care Goodies…

December 7th, 2021 by Karen 10 Comments

biossance unstoppable glow
Skincare goodies from Biossance

DUDE. Is it just me, or is the temptation to smooth and slather on all the things strong when new skincare arrives?

The beauty products I ordered on Black Friday hit my doorstep yesterday, and I’m trying really hard to slow my roll and not put everything on my face all at the same time!

I think I mentioned this a couple weeks ago, but I grabbed the Biossance Unstoppable Glow Kit because 1) it includes a full-size jar of Squalane + Omega Repair Cream, my current go-to face moisturizer, 2) it was on sale and 3) I’ve been wanting to try the Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil, and the kit includes a travel-size bottle.

I also picked up a full-size bottle of the Squalane + Antioxidant Cleansing Oil, too, which I used last night to take off my makeup, and I have mixed feelings. It’s great for removing face and lip makeup, and my skin didn’t feel tight or uncomfortable after I rinsed off, but oh, my eyes! They stung a little when I rubbed the oil on my lashes and lash lines. I’ll still keep using it to take off foundation and lipstick but will stick to Curel Makeup Cleansing Oil to remove eye makeup.

Anywho! My order also came with this awesome GWP kit, which has a ton of things from the Biossance line…

  • Squalane + Amino Aloe Gentle Cleanser — Because you know I love gentle!
  • Squalane + Rose Vegan Lip Balm — Putting it on my lips right now, and it feels like the Laneige Lip Mask.
  • Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil — For brightening and moisture.
  • Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer — I think this is a lighter version of the Omega Repair Cream.
  • Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream — Been dying to try this!
  • Squalane + Vitamin C Dark Spot Serum — I’m devoted to Skinceuticals CE Ferulic, but I like this brand so much I’ll give this a go.
  • Squalane + Lactic Acid Resurfacing Night Serum — Love me some lactic acid.
  • Squalane + Omega Repair Cream — A little travel-size jar of my go-to face cream.
The awesome GWP kit!

Oh! I also ordered some things from Avene, too. I restocked a couple favorites: another bottle — my third one, it’s that good! — of Solaire UV Mineral Sunscreen and a tube of XeraCalm AD, which saves my skin whenever it feels so dry that it hurts. I’ve been wanting to try their RetrinAl Intensive Cream for a while, so I grabbed that too.

A couple tried-and-true items from Avene, along with something new

So that’s what’s new on this end. I’m actually kinda surprised I didn’t pick up any makeup, but with my new job and all, I haven’t been feeling super adventurous with makeup lately. I end up using the same stuff. Sigh! I know.

I was this close on Black Friday to pulling the trigger on a Chantecaille order, but then I realized at that point I really needed to start buying gifts for other people on my Christmas list so I had calm the eff down, LOL!

If you have any q’s about any of the items listed here, hit me up in the comments. I’m happy to give you my thoughts or first impressions. Site note: I’m really liking this Biossance Lip Balm! It’s thick, but not sticky, and my lips feel good.

Checking in: Black Friday Beauty Shopping and Epic Stretchy Joggers by Zella

November 26th, 2021 by Karen 3 Comments

biossance jar empty

Hi, friend. Happy Friday to ya!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We spent ours with family friends who invited us over for a full spread with turkey and all the fixings! I can’t even begin to tell you how nice it was to sit at a table and just chat and eat. Seriously, I don’t think I’ll ever take having a meal with people for granted ever again. It really is a gift to share food and time with others.

Before we left for dinner last night, I was getting dressed and had a moment when I actually contemplated non-stretchy pants, aka jeans, LOL! Yeah, I don’t know what I was thinking. I ended up going with a pair of joggers and I don’t regret the decision at all. If you’re in the market for super comfy pants with pockets, grab these Zella Soft Pocket Joggers from Nordstrom ASAP. I have them in both black and gray and wear them all the time. You can dress them up with a casual blazer and a white tee, or dress them down with a sweatshirt and a denim jacket. I love, love, love them!

Anywho, I was chatting with a few gals in the comments yesterday about Black Friday beauty shopping, and I had to mention a gift set that I bought from Biossance.

They’re currently having a Black Friday sale with 30% off on everything on the site, so I wanted to pick up a jar of Squalane + Omega Repair Cream. It’s a rich face moisturizer packed with lipids, and I got it originally because the omega fatty acids are supposed to help with hyperpigmentation. I bought one last June for my birthday and have since fallen deeply in love!

biossance jar empty

While I was checking out the gift sets, I noticed one called Unstoppable Glow ($59), which contains a full-size jar of the Omega Cream, and travel-size bottles of their Squalane + Lactic Acid Resurfacing Serum and Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil. With the 30% off sale, it’s $41.

If you just want a jar, a regular full-size 1.6-ounce jar is usually $58, and with the sale it’s $40. There’s also a 3.3-ounce jumbo size ($75), which is marked down to $58, and with 30% off, it’s also $40!

v

One last thing about this sale. If you spend more than $75, you also get a free 11-piece bag of Biossance’s top-rated skin care products.

Other beauty sales I’m excited about are Kate Somerville (25% off site wide), Avene (25% off site wide), Ilia (20% off site wide) and Chantecaille (25% off site wide).

I’m off to go and eat some pancakes now. My brother is visiting and he’s offered to make breakfast. Can’t wait!

Karen

Dry Skin & Dark Spots, and Skin Care Hits and Misses From The Ordinary, First Aid Beauty and Biossance

May 21st, 2021 by Karen 9 Comments

skin care may 2021 ordinary first aid beauty biossance

I will not add another step to my skin care routine.

Nope.

Not gonna do it. I WILL NOT!

I figure, if I keep up with this mantra, it’ll eventually come to pass…but so far, no dice.

These are the latest additions to my skin care routine — what I’ve been liking, and what I’d characterize as just “eh.”

Just to add a little background, in case you don’t know me from a slice of watermelon, I have combo skin and tend to break out around my mouth, chin and forehead, and I’m in my mid-40s (about to turn 46, as a matter fact). Right now I’m fighting the good fight against the occasional hormone-related breakout, along with, ugh…hyperpigmentation. SUNSCREEN IS MY HOMEGIRL.

With that said, let’s go…

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5

I recently picked up this hydrating product from Ulta, and I’m lurving it. I’ve read that incorporating a hyaluronic acid serum into your skin care regimen can be great for dry skin, but, apparently, there’s a trick to making this tip truly worth your time, which is that you have to apply the product when your skin is damp, then immediately follow up with a moisturizer to seal in said hydrating yumminess.

the ordinary hyaluronic acid

What’s the deal with hyaluronic acid? Well, it’s a sugar found naturally in our bodies, and its job in the skin is to hold onto water, so it keeps things plump and hydrated. Hyaluronic acid is also found in our joints and eyes as well.

As a skin care ingredient, it’s believed to act as a humectant because of its ability to draw and hold water, keeping your skin hydrated throughout the day!

There are lots of different hyaluronic acid serums at various price points (I’ll link some down below), but I picked up this one because it was only $7 for a 1-oz. bottle, and I’ve been steadily using it for the past month. I’m about a quarter of the way through it now, and my usual dry spots don’t feel as tight as they did before I started, so I’ll happily buy another bottle.

Yes, it’s an extra step…but if your skin’s been feeling parched, it’s totally worth it, IMO.

A few hyaluronic serums

  • Vichy Mineral 89 Daily Skin Booster Serum and Moisturizer ($28 for 1.69 fl. oz.)
  • SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier ($102 for 1 fl. oz.!!!)
  • Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Serum ($22 for 1 oz.)

First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Niacinamide Dark Spot Serum

This serum for fading dark spots and hyperpigmentation, among other things, is from First Aid Beauty.

Niacinamide, a.k.a. water-soluble Vitamin B3 is a heroic ingredient that gets mega-love in skin care circles because of how well many people think it works for various skin types (even sensitive), and it seems to do everything and then some, from minimizing large pores, moisturizing and, yes, evening out skin tone. Its rock star status is also due to how well it layers with other active skin care ingredients, like peptides, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, retinols and acids.

first aid beauty niacinamide serum

This particular serum is lovely. It works well with all of the other things I’ve had in the mix, and also works great under copious layers of sunscreen (you gotta reapply all throughout the day, my love) and makeup.

I’ve been using it for a couple weeks now, and it seems to help with fading post-acne dark spots. It’s pricey, though, at $42 for a 1-oz. bottle, so I’m going to wait a few more weeks to determine whether or not I’m going to keep it in the mix… I do like it so far.

Biossance Squalane + BHA Pore-Minimizing Toner

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND A GOOD BHA TONER?

I know, I know. Everyone loves the Paula’s Choice BHA Toner and talks about it like it’s the one BHA toner to rule them all, but even though I’ve gone through a bunch of bottles and have been desperately wanting to drink the Kool-Aid, I don’t think it does all that much for me.

I recently started exploring other options and stumbled onto the Biossance Squalane + BHA Pore-Minimizing Toner.

With this one, you really have to dig into the ingredient list because it actually doesn’t contain salicylic acid.

biossance bha toner

Instead, it has willow bark extract, which contains salicin, which is where salicylic acid comes from. Biossance says that it’s a natural BHA and acts more as an “anti-inflammatory” ingredient, while also gently exfoliating, tightening pores and balancing oil.

I do feel like it’s very gentle, and it does a decent job of not irritating my skin. It also seems to help calm it down… I had some angry red bumpy patches from overdoing the retinol, and this toner really helped my skin chill-the-eff out.

I like it, but don’t love it. Yes, it’s not super aggro, which I appreciate, but I don’t feel like it’s moving fast enough.

I do have to say, though, that it seems like this bottle will last a long time. I’ve been using three or four drops every morning for a month, and I’ve barely made a dent in it.

Bottom line? If you want a gentle version of a salicylic acid toner, this might be your jam.

I’m going to keep looking for a BHA toner that rocks my socks off… If you have one you love, I’m all ears! So far, these are on my “look into it” list:

  • Typology Purifying Toner 1% Salicylic Acid: This is $24 for 7.2-oz, so it seems like you get a lot of bang for your buck. I like that it contains actual salicylic acid, along with aloe vera (which my skin likes). OMG, DID I JUST HIT “add to cart”! How did that happen? LOL!
  • Naturium BHA Liquid Exfoliant 2%: There’s YouTube drama surrounding this line and its founder. I dunno, but the word “shady” has been thrown around. Anyway, I’m not super enthusiastic about this product, but the ingredient list seems decent, and I could easily pick it up at Target. It’s $20 for a 4-oz bottle. *shrugs*
  • SkinCeuticals LHA Toner: Effin’ SkinCeuticals. Why you gotta be so good? I’ve had more than my share of euphoric moments with their Vitamin C serum, which is the main reason I’m curious about this toner, which is on the pricier end at $40 for 6.8 oz. It contains a blend of lipo hydroxy acid (LHA, which is a derivative of salicylic acid), glycolic acid and salicylic acid. UGH, want!
