For Her Spring/Summer 2013 Makeup Collection, Sonia Kashuk Says, Wrap It Up, and Let’s Take It to Morocco!

March 27th, 2013 by Karen 17 Comments

sonia kashuk spring summer 2013
Affordable and stylish spring and summer beauty from Sonia K.

Kitty overlord got a taste for the finer things? Is he/she hooked on products with high-end prices?

With Tabs, been there, done that.

But ya know what? This spring and summer, refreshing your makeup bag (or your feline employer’s) doesn’t have to empty your Kate Spade wallet.

Not with my girl, Sonia Kashuk, swooping in to save the day. 🙂

Sonia Kahsuk Spring Summer 2013 all

Whether you’re saving up for a toy or trip, or just tightening up your beauty budget, get haute couture for less with Sonia Kashuk’s new spring and summer 2013 makeup.

With a packaging revamp across her permanent line, there’s excitement in the air! Say so long (at least for now) to Sonia’s signature white and silver compacts, because they’ve been replaced by new black and white cases.

Of course, you’ll still be able to find your favorite product shades, as well as some new ones, too.

On the limited-edition side, we head to Morocco!

Or rather, Sonia did, and it influenced her spring and summer makeup, bags and tools.

It’s a HUGE collection this year (available now at Target, in stores and online), and here are some of the pieces that have caught my eye…

The New NARS Satin Lip Pencils: Steeped in Prodigious Pigment, These Creamy, Indulgent Crayons Call for You to Pencil in Some Playtime at Your Nearest NARS Counter

March 7th, 2013 by Karen 39 Comments

NARS Satin Lip Pencil Floralies swatch
Wearing the new NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Floralies ($25), a light apricot, one of 13 shades from the new Satin Lip Pencil line coming March 15 to NARS counters and available now online

You know what I realized this afternoon while coloring in my lips with the new NARS Satin Lip Pencils?

I have no idea what happened to my coloring books…

I used to have a ton of them as a kid. Stacks of coloring books, but somewhere along the way, they disappeared, probably into the same vortex that sucked up my red Hello Kitty lunchbox (she growled, shaking her fist!).

I was always coloring something… Books, folders, pictures of people.

I did that last one a lot, too. I loved coloring in the lips of people in pictures (a harbinger of my lipstick addiction, perhaps?).

Today, as I lined and filled in my pout with the Satin Lip Pencils — creamy, potently pigmented lipsticks with a soft sheen finish — I felt like I was lying on the living room floor with Karrie, my childhood buddy, coloring and watching cartoons. 🙂

Lightweight, non-sticky, smooth and moisturizing, they’re like lip pencils and lipsticks rolled into one. Just line and fill in your lips, and you’re good for 5-6 hours (keep ’em handy, though, if you plan to eat or drink, as they do fade a bit after either).

NARS included some interesting ingredients in the formula — things like pomegranate and yeast extracts, hyaluronic acid, collagen prepeptides and vitamin E to moisturize, soothe and create fuller-looking lips.

Oh…but which color to start with among the 13 shades, which range from nuanced nudes to arresting pinks and reds?

I say go with Floralies if you’re into nudes, Lodhi if you’re a fiend for corals, and Yu or Jardin Des Plantes if you’re all about brights.

This Ocean’s Pretty Cool: The Gabriel Cosmetics Oceanid Collection for Spring 2013

March 5th, 2013 by Karen 20 Comments

Gabriel Cosmetics Oceanid Collection
Wearing the new eight-piece Gabriel Cosmetics Oceanid collection for spring 2013 on my eyes, cheeks and lips, available now at Whole Foods and Pharmaca stores, and online

Calling all mermaids and beach babes! The Oceanid collection by Gabriel Cosmetics ZuZu Luxe may tempt you to take the plunge into this indie line of all-natural, gluten-free and vegan makeup.

Gabriel Cosmetics Oceanid Collection

Made without synthetic chemicals or animal by-products, the line is pretty new to me, but being a water baby and all, the teals and blues caught my eye.

I also liked how Gabriel Cosmetics sprinkled in cool-toned shades for the eyes and lips — something kinda different from the warm bronzes and golds that typically come with beach-themed collections.

Gabriel Cosmetics Oceanid Collection
HAAAY, GURL! I’m wearing Taureg Liquid Eyeliner, Navy Mascara and Calypso, Breeze and Platinum Eye Shadows on my eyes; Sunset Blush on my cheeks and Crystal Lip Gloss with Fresh Lip Liner on my lips

The stand outs? The eye shadows. They boast mad pigment, refuse to fall out and blend like buttah. I think they could easily hold their own with the MAC, NARS and Urban Decay eye shadows in my makeup bag.

Quick takes on the rest of the collection:

  • Sunset Blush: A super-saturated apricot with fine powder grains; love it
  • Navy Mascara: A little hard to see the blue; better at lengthening than thickening
  • Taureg Liquid Eyeliner: Loaded with pigment, but the stiff brush makes it hard for me to get sharp lines
  • Fresh Lip Liner: A matte cool pinkish beige that feels comfy and smooth
  • Crystal Lip Gloss: A non-sticky, unscented clear gloss with a very faint sugar flavor

Overall, I like this collection, especially the eye shadows and the blush, and I think the cool-toned elements add a fresh twist.

PRICE: $13.80-$21.50)

9 Pastels, a Panini Press and the Butter London Spring 2013 Sweetie and Starkers Collections

February 26th, 2013 by Karen 25 Comments

Butter London Sweetie and Starkers Spring 2013 Collections
The nine-piece Butter London Spring 2013 Collection ($15 each bottle), available now online and at Butter London counters and Nordstrom

Today my brain politely offered me two options. One, I could spend the afternoon experimenting with my new Sunbeam Panini Press (and eating said food experiments)…or two, I could catch up on spring nail polish swatches.

Panini Press Madness!
The Sunbeam Panini Press, my new BFF

Tough decision…

But technically, the panini press isn’t new. I’ve had it since Christmas (of 2010!) and just kind of forgot about it.

Whoops!

Over the past few days, I’ve made a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches with it, a delicious grilled shrimp burrito (!) and a quesadilla with brie and pear.

But again, it’s not new, so I opted for the swatches…in part due to my muffin top, which has been feeling extra muffin-y lately…

I’ve also been going through a pastel nails phase, and the colors in the Butter London Spring 2013 Collection are scratching the itch. 🙂

This year, Butter London divided their spring launch into two parts — the six-piece Sweetie Shop collection and three-piece Starkers collection. Each bottle goes for $15 a pop.

Be Betty AND Veronica With MAC Archie’s Girls: The MAC Archie’s Girls Collection for Spring 2013

January 23rd, 2013 by Karen 246 Comments

MAC Archie's Girls

MAC has always been good at collections that tell a story, and sometimes the story’s a little hazy, and sometimes the story’s really clear. With the MAC Archie’s Girls collection (coming Jan. 30 to cyberspace, to stores and counters February 7, and internationally this March), it’s almost like you’re reading an Archie comic, but instead of flipping through the pages and reading the words, you’re seeing the story within the products. You get the sense of who these two girls are, Betty and Veronica, and how they relate to each other.

MAC divided the collection into two parts (chapters?) with very distinct packaging. There are 16 Betty products, 16 Veronica products and five accessories — brushes, bags, a mirror. That kind of thing. The Veronica products have Veronica’s face on them, and the Betty products have Betty’s.

Blonde babe Betty gets colors you might wear with a spring dress and a ribbon in your ponytail. Corals, sweet peaches, lavender, gold, brown and green.

MAC Archie's Girls

Veronica’s colors? Like the exclamation marks on the collection! Royal purples, Corvette reds and a fuchsia you might see in a kiss on a really naughty album cover. These are colors you’d wear with your man-eater outfit.

But what I think is super, super cool is how the sub-collections reflect Betty’s and Veronica’s distinct personalities. They’re rivals vying for Archie’s affections, but at the same time, these two girls get along! In fact, they’re BFFs. If Betty borrowed a sweater from Veronica and wore it to school the next day, she’d still be Betty, walking down the hallway with her books in the crook of her arm, but she’d have some of Veronica’s swagger, thanks to the sweater.

Much like wearing the Betty cheek and lip products from Archie’s Girls with Veronica’s eye products. In essence, you can be the best of both girls, and play up the different sides of your personality. You don’t have to choose one or the other (unlike poor Archie).

MAC Archie's Girls

So, who is Archie’s Girl Betty? Well, she’s the girl next door who slips on Converse high tops, skinny jeans and a tank top for a blind date. She’s very girly and sweet, like someone who sends thank you notes and feeds the stray cats that show up on her porch at night.

As for Veronica, she’ll spend an entire day at the mall looking for a specific shade of black shoe to go with the dress she plans to wear to an invite-only club. When she’s walking down the street and another girl walks by, Veronica knows if the girl’s bag is a knockoff or real. She’s the girl whose closet you envy and the one who’ll always listen to your boy problems before offering to take you to the mall to cheer you up.

I plan to play with these products and post some reviews over the next few days, but right away, I think MAC succeeded with the release by giving two different points of view.

MAC Archie's Girls

On the Veronica side? — super saturated, rich colors, whereas MAC played with sheerer shades on the Betty side, which of course some gals will grumble about, but I think sheers can also be cool.

The quality is there. For me, the Veronica lip products stand out. The bold colors, the pigments — MAC traditionalists may really like these.

And then there are the Pearlmatte Face Powders… LOVE THEM! Just so we’re clear, when I’m running away from the zombies, you’ll find me clutching one of these in my palm (instead of a machete). A girl needs her highlighters, even in the apocalypse.

The Pearlmatte’s also have the added bonus of a built-in blush. See the hearts in each of the pans down below? They’re actually MAC Blushes, and they’re surrounded by MAC Beauty Powders.

As for the eye palettes, I’ve noticed this trend with MAC Eye Shadows over the past couple of years where when you put your finger in some of the pans to swatch the shadows, they feel very hard. I don’t know why, but these seem a little softer to me.

Without further ado, let’s get on with it, shall we? Come meet Archie’s Girls. 🙂

Urban Decay Followed the Yellow Brick Road All the Way to Two New Limited Edition Palettes Inspired by Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful

January 23rd, 2013 by Karen 40 Comments

Urban Decay Oz Palette
Urban Decay’s new $49 limited edition palettes were inspired by Disney’s Oz The Great and Powerful

If you’re wearing one of Urban Decay’s two new limited edition $49 palettes inspired by the upcoming Disney flick, Oz the Great and Powerful, and someone shouts, “Witch!” DO NOT bust out your Tae Bo moves.

I repeat: no Tae Bo, Jiu-jitsu or Aikido moves, and absolutely DO NOT remove your hoop earrings.

Throw no blows! — because they’re just complimenting you on your makeup. 🙂

Mila Kunis as TheodoraThe two colorful palettes, Glinda and Theodora, recently materialized online — POOF! — just like witchcraft, tying in with the new Oz film with makeup to recreate the looks worn by the witches played by Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams.

And this time, Urban Decay went all out!

These aren’t just some of their existing products in fancy packaging (not that I don’t like some of those palettes too). They created all-new colors here, and even included tutorials.

Nothing half-@ssed or cheesy. I feel like UD put a lot of thought into both products.

Each one comes with eight completely new eyeshadow shades…even though there are only six pans (two of the pans in each palette are duos), and the pans contain 0.05 ounces of product, making them the same size as Urban Decay’s interchangeable full-size shadow pans.

Urban Decay also included a gloss and liner with each palette, considerately completing the look.

First, Theodora — the richer, moodier magician who excels at conjuring up fab looks for brown smokey eyes.
