Chanel Summer 2015 Collection Méditerranée: Red Lips Via Rose Paradis, Allegria and Arthur

April 29th, 2015 by Karen 19 Comments

Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Lip Colour in Arthur, $36

Now that’s what I’m talking about.

Red.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got nothing but love for sheer lips, but sometimes red really hits the spot. Especially on a Wednesday, ya know? I can’t think of a better day to wear red lips. 🙂

These reds are from the new Chanel Summer 2015 Collection and are available now at Chanel counters and online.

A quick break-break-down…

Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Lip Colour in Arthur ($36) — A re-promote in the permanent line, Arthur is a warm, full-coverage, slightly orangey red with a creamy finish that feels a little thick on my lips, but it’s still very comfortable, smooove, non-streaky and pretty moisturizing. It also has Chanel’s lovely light rose flavor and scent.

Chanel Levres Scintillantes Glossimer in Rose Paradis ($30) — Also a re-promote from the permanent line, Rose Paradis is a rosy pink with subtle shimmer and a medium-weight, non-sticky formula with coverage just shy of full. And yup, that signature light rose flavor and scent.

Chanel Levres Scintillantes Glossimer in Allegria ($30) — Limited edition Allegria is a warm, intense full-coverage creamy red with the same Glossimer texture/flavor/scent as Rose Paradis.

Chanel. Summer. Ah… 🙂

Speaking of summer and good things, your nephew and I just had a wonderful dinner outside on the deck. I nibbled on a zucchini noodle dish with lemon pepper shrimp (SO easy to make! Let me know if you want the recipe.) and sipped a yummy white wine (TJ’s Santa Barbara Landing 2013 Riesling. $4.99! So good!) while his tabby royal highness tried to jump up on the table.

Now I’m back inside, but he’s still out on patrol in the Tabby Command Center.

Whatever you’re up to, I hope you’re having a nice night.

Veggie Taco Wraps With Lentil Walnut Taco “Meat”

April 28th, 2015 by Karen 23 Comments

These freaking tacos, man!

Honestly, I have no idea where good taco pictures come from because it’s really, really hard to take a good taco pic. This is something I realized last night while trying to stage and photograph these lentil walnut taco wraps so they’d look remotely cute in pics.

Um, fail! It took me forever to take these because the veggies kept falling out of the romaine leaves… It was a hot mess.

These might not look like the neatest taco wraps ever, but taste-wise, they were beyond good. I got the recipe from ohsheglows.com but tweaked it with cheese and sour cream.

I wish I could’ve thought of a better way to photograph the lentil-taco “meat” (there’s no meat in them; they’re totally veg) more clearly, because really, that stuff was the star of the show. Next time I give this a whirl I’ll photograph the lentil mash better. It even kinda looks like beef.

Someday, I will conquer you, you dastardly taco! You haven’t defeated me yet!

More Stuff I Made! A Potato and Tomato Frittata and a Strawberry Salad

April 27th, 2015 by Karen 16 Comments

potato tomato frittata

I call this dish “Potato and Tomato Frittata,” even though that’s technically incorrect, because there’s also broccoli, sweet onions and basil up in the mix.

But “Broccoli, Sweet Onion, Basil, Potato and Tomato Frittata” doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as easily. 🙂

Yup, I still can’t cook, but I keep trying! — mostly because I get a kick out of taking pictures of what I make.

In another lifetime, I’d be a food photographer, and I would only accept payment from my clients in the form of food.

So, this frittata, I’ve made it a few times using a really easy recipe from thekitchn.com.

Seriously, even if you burn toast, you can make this. It’s that simple (and fast!). I like making it for dinner at the start of the week and then having the leftovers throughout the week for lunch.

From start to finish, I can get this on the table in less than 30 minutes.

To round out the meal this week, I added a mixed greens salad with strawberries, slivered almonds and shredded coconut, with a strawberry lemon basil dressing (here’s the recipe).

So. Dang. Good.

New Bargain Bling: Loft Necklaces on Serious Sale

April 24th, 2015 by Karen 13 Comments

Because woman cannot live on chunky statement jewelry alone, I picked up these dainty necklaces from Loft. Better still — I got ’em on sale.

ON SALE!

Those are magic words right there…

I’m actually starting to rue the day I discovered that Loft is kind of the sh*t, because, dude — I kid you not — they always have a sale, and none of those wimpy 10% off sales. These sales are usually 40-60% off, which is, like, two steps away from free. LOL!

At least that’s what I tell El Hub when I come home with a Loft shopping bag. 🙂

The gold necklace is the Delicate Crystal Triangle Necklace, originally $29.50 but currently on sale for $24.88, plus an additional 60% off. The final price? $9.95. I’m wearing it in these pics as a layering necklace. (I can’t remember the designer of the “K” necklace I’m also wearing, though. My bad.)

The silver one is the Delicate Pave Circle Necklace. Same drill. Originally $29.50, but now $9.95 after 60% off.

Another thing I like about these necklaces is that you can wear them in different lengths. See all the loops in the back of the chain? You can use them to take the necklace up or down, depending on your outfit and mood.

Yay for bling on sale! 🙂

Say “Chai” to the Aveda Light the Way Candle: Limited Edition for Earth Month

April 21st, 2015 by Karen 7 Comments

Mmm…chai tea.

That’s exactly what the new Aveda Light the Way Candle ($12) smells like to me. I have one scent-ifying my office right now, and oh my gosh, it smells good! — like vanilla and cinnamon (but not like someone dumped out two bottles of pure vanilla and cinnamon in the room).

aveda light the way

Happy Earth Day Eve. 🙂

This limited edition Aveda soy wax candle is made from soy and other plant waxes, and it burns for about 30 hours (!). All of the proceeds from it go toward supporting water-related projects funded by the Global Greengrants Fund. According to Aveda, one Light the Way Candle purchase provides a year’s worth of drinking water for a person.

The glass it comes with is made entirely of recycled glass beverage bottles, too. Isn’t that cool? Even the box is made from 90% post-consumer recycled paperboard, and the candle’s scented with certified organic essential oils, including organic vanilla, cinnamon and ylang-ylang from Madagascar. Aveda also says that children living in the Manakara region of Madgascar drew the artwork for the packaging.

Established in 1993, the Colorado-based Global Greenrants Fund provides grants to grassroots environmental causes around the world. Read more about their work at greengrants.org.

Look for the Light the Way Candle now at Aveda salons, spas, stores and online at aveda.com while supplies last.

By the way, if you purchase one online, the shipping is free. 🙂

Meatless Monday: Colorful Cabbage Salad

April 20th, 2015 by Karen 12 Comments

Look at all the pretty colors! (she said, making grabby hands.)

Last night I prepped a huge batch of this salad with cabbage, carrot, bell pepper and celery to eat for lunch this week. I also made a tahini lemon garlic dressing, too, which I like to toss in at the last moment.

I got the recipes from ohsheglows.com.

Do you ever read Oh She Glows?

Dang, I love that site…

To mix up the flavors a little each day so it doesn’t seem like I’m eating the same salad over and over again, I throw some herbs into my bowl at lunchtime. Today I used cilantro. Tomorrow, basil. 🙂

I had mine today with a side of quinoa with a pat of butter, a sprinkle of garlic powder and a pinch of salt. Everything was so. Good. Together.

Do you ever do meatless Mondays? Or how about prepping your lunches for the week? What kind of dishes do you make?

Nails of the Day: Essie Garden Variety

April 20th, 2015 by Karen 11 Comments

essie garden variety

essie garden variety

Irrespective of this super creamy, smooth, streak-free paw paint’s proper name, it’s not your garden variety creamy teal. Essie’s Garden Variety Nail Polish ($8.50) is so preternaturally pigmented that 1) it’s liable to make nearby flowers jealous, and 2) you can easily get away with wearing just one layer.

But I’m wearing two here (force of habit).

With a base and top coat, Essie polishes usually last me five or six days before I start to see any chips, but I’m pretty tough on my nails.

essie garden variety

Garden Variety is part of the Essie Flowerista spring collection, available now at salons, Ulta, Target, Nordstrom and wherever else Essie is sold.

Oh! If you’re curious, the pants are the Destroyed Boyfriend Jeans by Blank NYC, and the bracelet is a random no-name bauble I’ve had for a while.

I like how it matches the polish. 🙂

What about your paws today? What are you wearing on your nails?

Nails of the Day/Night: Smith & Cult Bitter Buddhist

April 17th, 2015 by Karen 12 Comments

Smith & Cult Bitter Buddhist, $18

Tonight I’m wearing two coats of Smith & Cult’s Bitter Buddhist ($18), which is officially described as a “celadon green.”

A celadon.

I thought a celadon was a kind of dinosaur? No?

LOL! 🙂 Seriously, though, I thought it was a restaurant before doing this post.

Whatever it is, I like it! It’s a pale, pretty blue.

The shorts, by the way, are the Scallop Lace Riviera Shorts by LOFT, the bag is NARS (limited edition; I don’t think it’s still available), and the bracelet is something I got at Nordies a few years back.

P.S. If you like Smith & Cult Bitter Buddhist, you might also like Chanel Horizon Line.
