Wear Giorgio Armani Cheek Fabric in 503 Daybreak With Black, Grey or Taupe Smokey Eyes This Fall

Daybreak.

Wasn’t that an Ethan Hawke movie about vampires?

Or was it Daybreakers?

Sorry… Never mind. 🙂

Giorgio Armani’s $46 Cheek Fabric in Daybreak 503 might not have enough bite for the Ladies League of Plush Pigment Vampires because 1) its apricot sheen is surprisingly subtle on skin, and 2) it’s almost $50.

But if you don’t mind spending a pretty penny (or rather, 4,600 of them) and like makeup that doesn’t look obvious, or you want a blush to wear with bolder eye looks, ch-ch-ch-check it out…

Giorgio Armani Cheek Fabric in 503 Daybreak

When I want to keep the focus solely on my eyes, like when I’m a wearing a black, gray and/or taupe smokey eye look, I’ll apply Daybreak and swipe a pale nude gloss on my lips.

On my combo dry/oily skin, I get about between 8-10 hours of wear from Daybreak (from about dusk till daybreak, in fact).

I’m also wearing the Urban Decay Naked2 Basics Palette and Armani’s Black Ecstasy Mascara on on my eyes, and Hourglass Extreme Sheen Lipgloss in Origami on my lips

Even though it’s super subtle (and perhaps too quiet for some), I think of Daybreak as one of the more interesting blushes I’ve ever worn because of the way the powder lays on the skin. It’s as if it clings to the surface, and it almost feels like I’m wearing nothing at all. Très elegant.

The color is kinda interesting, too. The apricot pigment shows up on my cheeks but still lets a lot of my natural skin tone through.

Apparently, Armani designed it that way. They combine pure pigments with a transparent base, so that when you apply the blush to your skin, it looks soft and luminous.

Daybreak is part of the permanent line and was recently re-promted with Armani’s new fall collection. It’s available now with the rest of its fall cohorts.

PRICE: $46
AVAILABILITY: Permanent, and available now at Giorgio Armani Beauty counters and online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+

Beauty Confessions: Sometimes I Pick My Perfume by Color…

August 14th, 2014 by Karen 9 Comments

Sometimes on Sunday nights I gather up a bunch of perfume bottles based on color, set them all on my bathroom shelf, and then I wear a different one each day of the week.

This week was all about blue…

  • Cartier Declaration L’Eau Eau de Toilette: Technically, it’s a men’s fragrance, but I dig it, so why the heck not? Spicy woods, cedar accords, pink peppercorn and grapefruit. $93.
  • Clean Fresh Laundry: When I can’t be bothered to take a real shower (it happens), I like crisp, fresh scents like this. Brazilian orange, Mexican lime, fresh mown (mowed?) grass, cyclamen, rose otto, night blooming white jasmine petals, heliotrope and musk. $38.
  • Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Dreaming in Portofino Eau de Toilette: This was a limited edition Light Blue flanker from 2012 that I like to wear in the summer. Citrus accord, pink pepper, geranium, amber and patchouli. $50.
  • Dolce & Gabba Le Bateleur No 1: A limited edition unisex fragrance from 2009’s D&G Anthology that I “borrowed” (permanently, also known as “stole”) from El Hub. 🙂 Unfortunately, it’s hard to find now. Notes of juniper berries, cardamom, birch, water, coriander, olivanum (frankincense), cedar and vetiver. $69.
  • MAC Turquatic: An oldie but a goody! The bottle shown here is the old-school version. It has flashier packaging now (I prefer this older style, though). Anemone (say that five times fast, LOL!), lotus, orris and cedar. $30.
  • L’Occitane Mer & Mistral: Another refreshing aquatic scent. This one works for gals and guys. Pine, cypress and rosemary. $75.
  • Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey Summer: This one is a little sweet for my taste, but I wear it because I love the beachy bottle (um, is that cray?). Lychee, vanilla, lotus, cyclamen, freesia, carnation, white lily, amberseed and musk. $74.

Who Wore It Better? — The Kristin Perry Audrey Necklace

August 13th, 2014 by Karen 14 Comments

“B*tch stole my look.”

–Tabs the Cat

Behold! — the Kristin Perry Audrey Necklace.

If I actually win this poll, I would not be surprised to see pigs flying outside my window, because really, you don’t go head to head with a cat wearing bling and actually expect to come out on top.

There’s just no way… 🙂

New Cat Lady Paw Protectors

Cameow Socks by Sock It To Me (1)

Cameow Socks by Sock It To Me (2)

If, while happily hopping along one day, you happen upon a pair of pink knee-high socks with mustachioed kitties wearing berets and bow ties, clearly, the right thing to do — the ONLY thing to do — is to buy them.

There is simply no other option.

I mean, unless you want to lose your Crazy Cat Lady License, and I don’t think you want that. 🙂

The socks! Guess where I found them.

Yup, at a sock store in Tahoe. A store completely dedicated to socks.

There were socks everywhere! From floor to ceiling.

But you don’t have to go to Lake Tahoe to find this pair of cleverly named Cameows (Get it? Like cameo? LOL!) because it’s also available online at sockittome.com. Price: about 15 cans of gravy (that’s $12 a pair).

Lychee or Dragon Eggs? Hard To Tell…

August 11th, 2014 by Karen 15 Comments

For real though, this site is two, maybe three posts away from being renamed “Makeup and Food Blog,” or “Makeup and All of the Things My Goat-Like Stomach Likes to Consume.”

That second one rolls off the tongue better, methinks…

Today, it’s lychee. 🙂 I picked these up from Trader Joe’s yesterday.

If you haven’t had a lychee before, it’s a sweet pitted fruit with a crusty dragon skin-like outer shell.

The fleshy fruit tastes like a cross between a watermelon and a peach to me. Just peel, plop one in your mouth, and spit out the seed.

I could seriously eat these things all day long…especially when they’re cold.

Have you ever had lychee before? How about lychee shave ice or ice cream?

Greetings From Lake Tahoe!

August 7th, 2014 by Karen 14 Comments

Wearing Essie’s Haute in Heat nail polish

Tabs decided that he needed some personal time away from his day-to-day wait staff, so he kicked El Hub and I out of the condo for a few days and hired his favorite petsitter.

Having the time off, El Hub and I drove here to Lake Tahoe, which is about three hours east of the Bay Area.

I still haven’t found Michael Corleone’s house (remember The Godfather: Part II?), but I have been looking… 🙂

But seriously, we got here around one in the afternoon and grabbed lunch on the water at Riva Grill.

The Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe
Grilled Fish Tacos: Grilled snapper, warm corn tortillas, apple-jicama slaw, guacamole, cilantro, pico de gallo
Fish & Chips: Lemon-beer battered Pacific Snapper, crunchy French fries, apple-jicama slaw and cajun remoulade

It’s a bit on the temperate side here (upper 60s). I’ve been in long pants and sweaters all day, but it’s been sunny and beautiful.

Bombasilberry: Bombay Sapphire, strawberry, fresh basil, fresh lime juice, Agave Nectar shaken in a Hurricane

Dude, I Hit Pan Today!

MAC The Monsters Bride Palette (1)

MAC The Monsters Bride Palette (2)

It never gets old, seeing that flash of silver…

THRILLING! 🙂

That brown is MAC Brun Eye Shadow (a total unsung hero; available separately in the permanent collection), and the palette is the limited edition The Monster’s Bride palette from fall 2013.

Gosh, I’ve been using Brun to fill in my brows about every day for, like, forever.

If you have brown hair and haven’t rocked Brun in your brows (it’s also great as a liner and an eyeshadow, of course), you gotta get on that, young lady!
