What’s Your Favorite Drugstore Makeup?

July 22nd, 2009 by Karen 54 Comments

sally hansen diamond 12 hour lip treatment flawless

Drugstores are treasure troves of fantastic makeup bargains, like my current favorite, Sally Hansen Diamond 12-Hour Lip Treatment (the shade above is called Flawless).

The product comes in a ton of vibrant (and highly moisturizing) colors, feels thin and non-sticky on my lips and packs *lots* of eye-catching shine.

Plus, at $7 a tube (sometimes less on sale), they don’t break the bank. 🙂

NOTE: Walgreens has Diamond 12-Hour Lip Treatment on sale now for $4 each!

What’s your current favorite drugstore makeup product, and why has it stolen your heart?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. I just found out that Sephora online is now selling Illamasqua. Woot!

Say No to Oily Skin and YES To Tomatoes Trouble-free Facial Wash

July 10th, 2009 by Karen 21 Comments

yes-to-tomatoes-trouble-free-facial-wash

Ever since the sticky summertime heat sent my combination skin into oily overdrive, I’ve been on the prowl, looking for a cleanser to break up all of this excess oil action.

Lately, I’ve been reaching a lot for Yes To Tomatoes Trouble-free Facial Wash ($10).

What’s with the tomatoes?

It’s a facial cleanser designed to remove excess oils and impurities from both oily and combination skin, and I expected it to smell like, well, tomatoes. Nope — it actually smells really good, like a combination of fresh, ripe watermelon, lemons and floral soap (but nothing like tomatoes).

Then where does it get its name?

From a key ingredient: lycopene.

According to the company (Yes To Carrots), “Lycopene is a natural compound responsible for the gorgeous red color of tomatoes. Its potent anti-oxidant properties are fantastic at fighting free radical damage, and preserving healthy skin cells.”

The compound’s also said to protect hair and skin from sun damage and pollution; promote healthy, softer skin; and to encourage a balanced, clearer complexion.

Yes To Tomatoes is one of three product lines: Yes To Tomatoes, Yes To Carrots and Yes To Cucumbers.

Tightness: yes or no?

A small, dime-sized amount of the gel takes care of my face and my neck. It works quickly, breaking up any oil and grease on my face. After I rinse, it leaves my skin feeling fresh, sans any sticky residue or uncomfortable tightness.

Packaging trubs

The sleek white tube means it doesn’t take up a lot of room on a bathroom shelf. That may seem like a minor detail (and it is), but I’m frustrated by bath products that come packaged in oddly shaped bottles that take up too much room in the bathroom, where shelf space is limited, right?

Get Naturally Cheeky With Sonia Kashuk Super Sheer Liquid Tint

July 3rd, 2009 by Karen 12 Comments

sonia kashuk super sheer liquid tint review

Hello, pigment. This is Rose. 🙂

Rose is one of three colors in Sonia Kashuk’s Super Sheer Liquid Tint line ($10; available at Target stores nationwide).

Sheer isn’t what first came to mind when I tested Rose on my hand. The color looked rich and vibrant — not exactly fitting the Super Sheer name.

Initially, Rose applies as a dark rosy pink, but her color fades over time…

How sheer is it?

Within an hour of applying Rose on my cheeks, the color fades to a sheer, barely noticeable pink. Super sheer, indeed!

Boost Lash Length with L’oreal Double Extend Mascara

July 1st, 2009 by Karen 20 Comments

loreal double extend mascara review eye final

It’s refreshing to find a product that lives up to its name.

L’oreal Double Extend Mascara ($11) may be a little pricey for a drugstore mascara ($1 more will get you one from MAC), but there’s one thing it does and does *very* well.

Nekkid lashes!

Two products for the price of one

Double Extend is like two products for the price of one — a lash primer and a mascara — which work together to extend the heck out of lashes.

Small fibers in the primer prep lashes for the mascara. Combined, the dynamic duo seem to make my lashes look much longer than usual.

Portability

Since both the lash primer and the mascara are at opposite ends of the same tube, Double Extend means not having to carry a separate tube of lash primer. Two points for traveling friendly. 🙂

Are the New Sonia Kashuk Ultra Shine Sheer Lip Glosses Dupes for Chanel Aqualumiere Glossimers?

July 1st, 2009 by Karen 35 Comments

sonia kashuk ultra shine sheer lip gloss

If somebody blindfolded me, slicked the new Sonia Kashuk Ultra Shine Sheer Formula Lip Gloss ($9) on my pucker and then asked me to guess which gloss I was wearing, I would guess an expensive Glossimer from Chanel.

Chanel Aqualumiere de ja vu/vu ja de

With its thin, non-stick formula that’s both taste- and fragrance-free, Sonia’s new $9 gloss feels surprisingly like a $27 tube of Chanel Aqualumiere Glossimer.

And the similarities don’t stop with the texture.

The rich (yet sheer) colors and glossy shine of Sonia’s Ultra Shines also make them look like dead ringers for Aqualumieres.

Elegant, practical tube

Tubes of Sonia’s new gloss may not wear those vaunted Chanel double C’s, but I think they still look elegant in their sleek silver cap. The tube is compact and practical, too, fitting easily into my favorite Coach Wristlet with room to spare.

Are they hydrating?

Ultra Shine has *a lot* going for it, but there is one thing I’d change…

Mad Moisture Meets Sun Protection: Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen

June 28th, 2009 by Karen 5 Comments

aveeno-active-naturals

Over the past three decades I’ve used dozens of different lotions on my perpetually parched bod, and after going through gallons and gallons of product, I’ve learned a thing or two, like how it sure ain’t easy to find an affordable, highly moisturizing daily body lotion with SPF.

In general, daily body lotions that contain sunscreen aren’t water- or sweat-proof like regular sunscreens; they’re body lotions first, with the added benefit of sunscreen. I like to use them during the work week or when I have errands to run — times when I expect to get a little sun but won’t be out in it for hours at a time.

I’ve been an Aveeno fan for years and had really high hopes for Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen SPF 15 ($12).

More moisturizing than other drugstore brands

For starters, Active Naturals feels much more moisturizing to me than usual for a drugstore lotion with SPF. With most of them my skin starts looking scaly and feeling tight within a few hours, but when I apply it in the morning before work, Active Naturals keeps my skin soft well into the evening.

Smells a little like sunscreen

If you’re sensitive to scents, in particular the smell of sunscreen, then you might want to take a good, long sniff before buying. Aveeno says the product doesn’t contain any added fragrances, but the broad-spectrum SPF formula does have a light, tell-tale sunscreen scent. It dissipates quickly, though, disappearing within about 10 minutes.

Absorbs slowly

Patience is key here as the product takes about twice as much rubbing as regular lotions (those without SPF) to massage into my skin. I guess in this case that’s part of the price you pay for sun protection.

At least it isn’t sticky once it dries and doesn’t leave a greasy finish or a white cast on my skin.

Oats, the No. 1 inactive ingredient

I can’t say for sure why this stuff’s so much more moisturizing than similar products, but Aveeno says it’s the oats. They’re listed as the first inactive ingredient (the top active ingredients are all sunscreens).

Oats have been used in skin care for thousands of years; clinical research proves their benefits, and all six products in the Active Naturals line contain colloidal oatmeal, finely-milled oats that Aveeno says leave a protective barrier on the skin, preventing water loss and maintaining moisture.

Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen SPF 15

Price: $12 for a 12-oz bottle
Use: An excellent hydrating daily body moisturizer with sunscreen
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

At $12, Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion is on the expensive side of the drugstore lotion spectrum, but it’s cheaper than comparable department store varieties from lines like Clinique, which sell sun protecting lotions for twice the price.

Sunday plans?

It’s another toasty day here in Northern California, but I’m going to attempt a run before catching up on some household cleaning and reading. I’m about halfway through Something Borrowed, and so far I’m in love (good writing for a chick lit book).

I hope you have some time to relax today. 🙂

Karen

Nair Precision Face and Upper Lip Kit Smoothes the Savage Beast

June 23rd, 2009 by Karen 27 Comments

nair-hair-remover

The beauty gods blessed each of my big toes with seven long and wiry toe hairs.

Why? To test hair removal products, of course. 🙂

Nair may have had lips, chins and faces in mind when they developed their Precision Face and Upper Lip Kit ($6), but how about furry toes?

holla-at-your-gurl-harry

I followed the directions to a tee (except for the toe part), and a few minutes after applying the cream directly from the tube, which dispenses like a tube of Carmex/lip gloss, my toe hairs simply wiped away with a damp wash cloth. No elbow grease required.

The process was fast, totally painless, and the hairs came off at the base, which I’m hoping means my toes will stay hair free for a while.

smooove-toes

If you’re thinking about using the kit for other kinds of hair removal…

Most importantly, the product works as advertised but has a surprisingly strong scent, kinda like hair perm, and I’m not sure I could tolerate it on my upper lip.

That, and the tube is quite small. The dispenser at the tip does allow for precise application, though, making it ideal for small hairy patches on the lips or, say, the tops of the toes (where it’s not intended to be used), but it also means that this definitely isn’t the right product for large scale hair removal projects.

Nair Precision Face and Upper Lip Kit

Price: $6
Use: A hair remover cream for lips, cheeks, chins and hella hairy sasquatch toes!
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

You might like Nair Precision if…

  1. you’re clumsy with razors,
  2. you’re looking for a quick and painless hair removal cream, or
  3. you don’t mind strong chemical scents.

The Quest for Vanity!

Do any of you remember Vanity 6? They were a girl group Prince put together back in the early-1980s.

vanity6

They had a song back then called Nasty Girls with a sick beat that always gets stuck in my head for hours whenever I hear it.

I tried to find it on iTunes today but could only find it on the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s Girl 6.

I’ve been singing it to Tabs for about an hour straight, and I don’t think he’s amused, ha!

Do you have any plans tonight? I’m thinking about pasta for dinner…
