Are the MAC Brooke Candy Eye Glosses Your Cup o’ Tea?

May 3rd, 2016 by Jen Clark 17 Comments

Eye look using MAC Brooke Candy White-Yin Eye Gloss

The lion’s share of the MAC Brooke Candy collection are definitely the amazing lippies, but the other items that sparked my interest were the eye glosses. I’d never used an eye gloss before, but I’d seen them floating around the YouTube-o-sphere, and they always looked so interesting to me.

There are two in this collection — White-Yin and Black-Yang.

MAC Brooke Candy Eye Gloss in Black Yang
Black-Yang MAC Eye Gloss ($23; a black/blue gloss with red and blue micro-shimmer)

Not gonna lie, I’m not quite sure what to think of these… I think they’re made for a very specific kind of look and a very specific kind of person.

I love what Jessica did with some of the other MAC Eye Glosses to create a cool, editiorial, grunge-y look, but no matter what you do, you’ll end up with creased, oily-looking eye makeup, which, obviously, isn’t everyone’s cup o’ tea.

They are also crazy sticky, which I guess makes sense for what they are, but they feel so weird on my eyelids. I just can’t deal with it. As you open your eyes and blink, things just stick together.

Rocking the organic look with Juice Beauty Cream Shadow Stick in Cove, and Satin Lip Cream in Cabernet as a base topped with Liquid Lip in Gwyneth

Although the day will have long since passed by the time you read this post, I started writing it on Earth Day (long story), and while I’m not exactly the world’s foremost expert on green beauty, I love it, and I love seeing what the brands that specialize in organic beauty products have to offer.

Juice Beauty is a well-respected brand in the world of organic, earth-friendly makeup, and they call themselves “the organic solution.” They incorporate a host of plant based ingredients into their products and make it clear that they want you to look at the list of common cosmetic industry ingredients that their products are formulated without.

Chocolate.

Just let that word sink in for a minute… Meditate on it. Close your eyes, and think of every scent and thought and feeling you get when you open a big box of chocolates.

Clockwise from the top: The Laura Geller “The Truffles Collection” palettes in Chocolate Plum Cordial, Chocolate Toffee, Chocolate Pistachio and Chocolate Truffle

That’s the feeling Laura Geller wants chocolate-loving makeup aficionados to feel when they feast their eyes on the generously sized “The Truffles Collection,” currently available for $45 (a $168 value!). You could treat Mom to a chocolate shadow extravaganza for Mother’s Day (It’s Sunday May 8th, ladies and gentlemen. Do not forget your mama!), or snag this delicious box of coco-inspired baked shadows for yourself.

The Truffles Collection comes with four separate palettes, each based around a different coco treat, and all are packaged in a big box that opens much like a classic box of chocolates. The individual palettes are housed in colorful metallic cardboard that matches the “flavor” therein.

Getting Gritty, Glossy and Grunge With MAC Studio Eye Gloss

April 27th, 2016 by Jessica Revitte 21 Comments

MAC Studio Eye Gloss
Getting grunge with MAC Studio Eye Gloss in Noticeably Noir and Medoc

Do you ever want to pull out all of your makeup and do an eye look that you would otherwise never wear? This grownup “play time” — I constantly crave it. Constantly. And lately I’ve been toying with the idea of a 100% black smoky eye.

This neutral-loving girl has almost always approached smoke safely, rarely venturing out into the deeper end of her Urban Decay Naked palettes…

Aaand then the MAC Studio Eye Glosses happened, and I could no longer resist my desire to experiment.

I mean, indulging in makeup play time is a hard job, but someone’s gotta do it, right? 🙂 In the interest of makeup experimentation, I think I’m up to the task.

I can’t help but notice that the MAC Studio Eye Glosses don’t always get the best reviews…but I think they’re a runway makeup artist’s dream. They’re also temperamental and require some patience, just like an expensive sports car. The eye gloss trend definitely falls more into the editorial/runway makeup category than the everyday makeup lover category that most makeup lovers are comfortable with.

They come in a carefully curated range of colors ($22 each) intended to really amplify your eye looks with a new texture, rather than a new shadow finish.

The Incredible NARS Under Cover Summer 2016 Collection Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows!

April 25th, 2016 by Adia Goss 25 Comments

nars under cover dual intensity eyeshadows
I’m still in love with the packaging…

Have you seen the four new Dual-Intensity Eyeshadows in the NARS Under Cover Summer 2016 Collection yet? They are incredible! I REALLY love the finish, because the shimmer is so soft, and they’re so crazy pigmented, that the fact that they’re also versatile and can be worn wet or dry is icing on the cake. You can use a fluffy brush to get just a wash of color, or you can dampen your brush and layer the colors to get more intensity.

Starting with Topless, a light seashell pink — I’m glad NARS included it, because it balances nicely with the bolder colors in the collection.

As for rich neutral brown Tan Lines, it’s neither too warm nor bronzey, but it doesn’t turn gray either, so I think it’s a great eyeshadow color, especially if you’re looking for a rich brown. The shimmer keeps it from being too plain.

And then there’s shimmering teal green Deep End — gorgeous! It reminds me of the waters off a tropical island! I mean, it’s not a color that I tend to wear…but it’s so beautiful.

Lastly, Pool Shark. It’s an iridescent blue with lots of purple shimmer, and it looks mostly blue in the pan, but as you can see in the pictures below, there’s also a lot of purple in it. It’s a really unique color, and I think you can get it to look more blue or purple, depending on how you wear it. I love colors like this because they always look a little different when you wear them!

Here’s a closer look at these stunning eyeshadows:

The Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Concentrated Crayons: An Amazing Drugstore Find

April 14th, 2016 by Adia Goss 33 Comments

maybelline color tattoo concentrated crayons

I’ve talked about how much I love eyeshadow sticks, so I was already primed and ready to like these Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Concentrated Crayons.

I was not, however, expecting to LOVE ❤ them!

Here’s just a quick look at all 10 of these incredibly smooth and crazy pigmented eyeshadow sticks. Plus, they have major staying power. The packaging says up to 24 hours…but I didn’t test them for that long.  Suffice to say, they last a full workday with no fading at all. I am so impressed with these shadows that I won’t be disrespectful and say that they’re only “good for a drugstore brand.” They’re just awesome period, and the icing on the cake is that you can get them at Target for $6 each.

Since there are 10 shades in the line, I broke them down by color family.

The pinks and purples…

As you can see, these are very sparkly, but still very pigmented.  I find Pink Parfait to be very similar to Pink Pearl by Boots No. 7, and Lilac Lust and Lavish Lavender seem more unique to me, especially among the world of eyeshadow sticks.

Of this group, my favorite is Lilac Lust.

Wearing Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Walk of Shame on my waterline, layered with Heartless below the waterline and in the inner corner of my eye

From day one, I have been in love with the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils.

The insane color selection (last time I counted, there were upwards of 40 shades!), the “glide-on” texture, the creamy and blendable formula and that everlasting finish have consistently made the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils my #1 go-to’s where liner is concerned.

And because Urban Decay is Urban Decay and exceptional when it comes to keepin’ things fresh and releasing new and exciting products, they’ve launched some totally awesome eye pencils with their Summer 2016 collection. A new formula designed with your waterline in mind — quite logically named 24/7 Waterline Eye Pencil — and a fierce shade in the classic range, Heartless, both of which are available for $20 each.
