A Monday Face of the Day with the New Laura Mercier Luxe Colour Portfolio for Holiday 2011

October 24th, 2011 by Karen 57 Comments

Okay, so I haven’t figured out why the new $98 Laura Mercier Limited Edition Luxe Colour Portfolio palette comes in a faux snakeskin box, but I do think there’s something mysteriously luxurious about it.

Part of Laura’s new holiday collection, it combines the… Yeah, I’m drawing a blank on the snakeskin holiday thing, but nonetheless, here’s a super quick face of the day. 🙂

The palette comes with six non-venomous powder eyeshadows, three cake liners, three powder blushes and three eye brushes, and it’s available now at Laura Mercier counters and also online.

Review/swatches, and perhaps a decent holiday snake reference, coming soon!

A Flu Shot Face of the Day with the Bobbi Brown Party Eye Palette

October 11th, 2011 by Karen 56 Comments

Here’s a goofy-but-it-totally-works makeup trick from a big ol’ crybaby (that would be me). 🙂

Any time I do anything that involves doctors or needles, as was the case today for the flu shot I received, I’m guaranteed to shed a few tears…unless I plan ahead of time and wear a smokey eye. Sounds weird, I know, but when I’m wearing smokey eyes, the fear of streaky makeup helps me fight the urge to cry.

Today’s day-friendly smokey eye comes courtesy of the new Bobbi Brown Party Eye Palette ($45). It’s a more muted, neutral version of the purple look I wore last week.

A Bobbi Brown Party to Go Palette Face of the Day

October 5th, 2011 by Karen 47 Comments

bobbi brown party to go palette

I feel so “all dressed up with nowhere to go” right now! And yes, I know you’re probably laughing at my hat. It looks exactly like the one I wore with my band uniform freshman (or was it sophomore?) year. To complete the illusion, I should have been holding my mellophone and standing at attention in these pics of me wearing Bobbi Brown’s new holiday palette, Party to Go ($25).

Try as I might, I’ll never be able to escape my band geek past. 🙂

Do you remember a while back when we talked how no two purple eyeshadows are created equal? And how some of them, depending on the specific color and the wearer’s skin tone, can make our eyes look bruised, tired (like I need any extra help with that, hello!) or like we’ve been crying?

That’s what I was thinking about the first time I swept Party to Go’s Eggplant in my crease.

As it turns out, Eggplant is one of those really GOOD purples — GREAT even — that should work well on a wide range of skin tones.

It doesn’t contain much red, which for me with purples can sometimes lead to those looks I don’t like, and it’s just so elegant that it gets along really well with the rest of the shadows and lip products in the kit.

Crazy Purple Lips and an Illamasqua Theater of the Nameless Face of the Day

September 22nd, 2011 by Karen 48 Comments

illamasqua theater of the nameless kontrol lipstick

To tell you the truth, I didn’t want to do jack squat this afternoon that didn’t involve makeup, ice tea, sunshine and life’s unsolved mysteries like…

Why do I always find missing things when I’m not looking for them?

Why do dudes sit next to me on airplanes, pass gas, and then try to cover it up by spraying Coolwater cologne (swear to gawd, this has happened several times!)?

If matter is neither created nor destroyed, then where have all of my missing socks gone?

Why does watching SpongeBob SquarePants make me feel like I’ve been eating “special” brownies?

Why did Tony on Who’s the Boss? pronounce Angela’s name, “An-ge-lurrr”?

Does the universe have borders? And what happens to the stuff that gets sucked into black holes?

Why do I always seem to pick the longest line at bridge toll booths and grocery stores?

Does Fat Man Scoop ever whisper?

Why didn’t The Flintstones wear shoes? If they had the technology to build cars, airplanes and washing machines, why couldn’t they make sandals?

And…

What does it feel like to wear crazy purple lipstick?

Answer: It feels weird.

Cool, but weird.

I came across purple Kontrol a few weeks ago with Illamasqua’s fall collection, Theater of the Nameless, and even though it wasn’t quite like anything I’d ever worn before, I still really wanted to give it a try.

I wore it around the house today with a few other pieces from the collection…

A Guerlain Belle de Nuit Face of the Day

September 15th, 2011 by Karen 33 Comments

I woke up in a playful mood this morning, so after a few minutes chasing Tabs around the house, I reached for a few pieces from the upcoming Guerlain Belle de Nuit holiday collection and sat down to do my makeup.

From left to right: Parure de Nuit Pressed Powder & Blush ($67), Rouge Automatique Lipstick in Nuit d’Amour ($35) and Les Ombres de Nuit 4-Colour Palette ($59)

That quad? Flawless. I’ll post collection reviews soon, but I couldn’t wait to show you pics of the quad in action.

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV: A Bit of Glam to Brighten a Bloated Day

August 31st, 2011 by Karen 50 Comments

I was up before the chickens this morning, thanks to 18 pounds of tabby cat making biscuits on my butt.

Don’t get me wrong — I usually like my early morning kitty massages (I find them kind of charming), but at 4 in the morning, a good two hours before my alarm was set to go off, today’s wasn’t exactly what I’d call a good time. 🙂

This is probably TMI, but I’m going there because we’re friends: I’ve been feeling decidedly un-glamourous this week, and not even makeup has been cheering me up.

Hard to believe, but it’s true.

I’ve just been so beyond bloated, fussy and tired that I felt like Thelma and Louise there for a minute this morning when I realized that my stretchy clothes weren’t fitting the way they did/should.

I almost lost it. It was intervention time — that, or I was headed off a cliff.

And then it beckoned me, like a beauty beacon of light from above — Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows Vol. IV — and I answered the call.

Dressing Up for Asparagus with Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV

August 27th, 2011 by Karen 33 Comments

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Volume 4 FOTD

If you saw a girl all dressed in black with a gunmetal grayish purple cat eye fondling the asparagus at Whole Foods in Novato last night, yup, that was me. 🙂

It’s been a long week, so last night I decided to reward myself with makeup for dessert. Before I left to hunt and gather at Whole Foods, I opened Urban Decay’s Book of Shadows Volume IV, scanned a few of the included QR codes with my phone and watched the corresponding tutorials.

One of the videos is for a dramatic purple-ish cat eye look (it’s actually called the “Purple Cat Eye”), and that’s the one I chose.

The Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV kit/palette comes with five very sci-fi QR codes, which work a little like bar codes. After installing a free iPhone app to read QR codes, I held the phone’s camera up to the code. The phone scanned it and then opened a link to the video. Each tutorial features Urban Decay’s Executive Creative Director Wende Zomnir and a model, on whom Wende completes the look while describing each step in the process, including which products and brushes to use.

The look is a sultry twist on a classic cat eye using products from the palette — perfect for an evening out, or for any time you’re in the mood for something a little naughtier than a simple smokey eye. It involves makeup for eyes and lips, but the cheeks are bare.

Unfortunately, these pics don’t convey one of the coolest, most unusual things about the cat eye part of the look — how the colors subtly flash from gray to purple and back. I think it looks more gray than purple in these pictures than it does in real life.

Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol. IV Starts to Crystallize in the First Video Tutorial

August 19th, 2011 by Karen 31 Comments

urban decay book of shadows volume IV

Today I started reading the new Urban Decay Book of Shadows, Vol. IV ($64), and it’s quite the page turner so far. 🙂

Urban Decay’s latest tale stars 16 eyeshadows (10 of them new) and a host of other interesting characters, like Supercurl (Full name: Supercurl Curling Mascara) and Potion (Full name: Eyeshadow Primer Potion).

I’m a sucker for science fiction, and when it’s good like this, I feel compelled to cosplay! — in a manner of speaking. I based my makeup this afternoon on the first of five tutorials in the story, the lovely “Crystallized.”

The book/palette comes with five special QR codes, which work a little like bar codes. After installing a free iPhone app to read QR codes, I held the phone’s camera up to the code. The phone scanned it and then opened a link to the video.

Cool…

Each of the tutorials features Urban Decay’s Executive Creative Director Wende Zomnir and a model, on whom Wende completes the look while describing each step in the process, including which products and brushes to use.
