BOO! My MAC Smokey Eyes for Halloween

October 31st, 2008 by Karen 61 Comments

Hey, ghouls! I’m on my way to a pet costume Halloween parade (insert collective “Awww…”) before dinner but wanted to say another quick hi. Here’s my look for tonight. I didn’t feel up to one of those deluxe MAC Halloween looks, and, since we’re just going out to dinner, opted instead for this moderately scary smokey eye with false lashes and pink lips.

I used MAC false lashes and a bunch of pigments to get this eye look, including Dark Soul, Smoke Signal and Your Ladyship from last year’s Smoke Signals collection.

Send me some pictures (karen_at_www.makeupandbeautyblog.com) of your Halloween look, okay? Be safe and sane tonight!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

MAC Red She Said Face of the Day: Navy Blue, Bronze and Brown Smokey Eye

October 29th, 2008 by Karen 55 Comments

For one precious hour last Saturday afternoon I got in some quality me time. El Hub had gone to the bookstore for something, so I had the place to myself. I plopped down on the living room floor with a bowl of chilled grapes, started an episode of Law and Order: SVU (lovin’ ya, Detective Stabler!) on the Tivo and reached for a few items from MAC Red She Said.

My mind was racing with thoughts of Tabs and other troubles, and I needed to distract myself with something uncomplicated, like Inter-view Mineralize Eye Shadow ($17.50), Enough Said Beauty Powder Blush ($18), Quiet, Please lipstick ($14) and Miss Dynamite Dazzleglass ($17.50).

From left to right: Enough Said Beauty Powder Blush, three shades from the Interview Mineralize Eye Shadow trio

I tried this brown, bronze and navy blue smokey eye. When I was done with the look, I walked around the room by myself, pretending I was contemplating impressionist paintings in a fancy art gallery.

Here’s how I did this look…

The Eyes

  1. I started by priming my lids with a layer of MAC Painterly Paint Pot applied with a fingertip.
  2. Next, I layered a mix of the brown and bronze shades from the MAC Inter-view Mineralize Eye Shadow Trio onto the inner two-thirds of my lid using a MAC 252 eyeshadow brush.
  3. Still with the same brush, I patted the navy blue shade from Inter-view onto the outer third of the lid and just barely into the crease, concentrating most of the color on the side closer to the ear.
  4. Then, I wet a MAC 239 eyeshadow brush with a spritz of MAC Fix+ and swept the wet brush head across the pan of bronze eyeshadow to load the brush and applied the rich, wet shadow to the inner third of my lid. With the edge of the brush, I lined the lower lash line.
  5. Using MAC Technakohl liner in Graphblack, I lined my upper and lower water lines.

To finish the eyes, I curled my lashes with the (legendary) Shu Uemura lash curler and added a couple coats of MAC Zoomlash mascara in Zoomblack.

The Cheeks

Wedding Palette Auditions: Stila Cover Look No. 2

October 21st, 2008 by Karen 55 Comments

Heya, girlies! Thanks for your feedback on potential makeup looks I could wear to my friend Jen’s upcoming wedding in November. For this go ’round of Wedding Palette Auditions I thought I’d try a gold eye with light cheeks and pink lips using another Stila palette, Cover Look No. 2. Let me know your thoughts.

I found Cover Look No. 2 on BeautyCrunch.com on sale for $15.20 (originally $40). It’s all about gold and combines the shade with peach, pink and taupe.

Lame eyeshadow: a shimmery cool gold
Oasis eyeshadow: a shimmery peachy gold
Coin eyeshadow: a shimmery peachy-taupe with gold flecks
Tint cheek color: a matte peach
Enchanting lipgloss: a shimmery peachy pink gold

Most of us felt the look with Stila Cover Look No. 4 didn’t pack enough oomph, so to bump up the drama with this look I added a thick line of MAC Fluidline in Graphic brown on the top lash line. On the lips, I layered MAC Cremesheen lipstick in Speak Louder beneath the Stila lipgloss.

Wedding Palette Auditions: Stila Front Cover Look No. 4

October 17th, 2008 by Karen 17 Comments

Traveling Light

My good friend Jen gets hitched in Florida next month, and I can’t wait! I’m looking forward to the wedding, but I’m not looking forward to packing.

Why? Because I overpack (hey, I like options) — always have — but not this time. This time, come hell or high water, I’m going to streamline. 🙂

To manage my makeup better than I usually do, I thought I’d bring along some palettes — just two (or three or four!). Today, I interviewed the first applicant for the job: Stila Front Cover Look No. 4.

I’m Jen’s matron of honor (I’m still not sure what matrons do). Both my bridesmaid dress and shoes are gold, so I’d like my makeup to complement them. As far as how bold a look I can get away with, it’s an afternoon church ceremony, which means nothing too disco or drag queen (oh, well).

There Are 4 Stila Front Cover Look Palettes

Look No. 4 is one of four limited edition Front Cover Look palettes by Stila. They’ve been out for a while (not exactly sure when they came out), and I had to get a little creative to find this one. Each includes three eyeshadows, a blush and one lipgloss, all packaged in a slim case with magazine motif.

Gotta Love Beautycrunch.com

Looks No. 2 and 3 are still available on the Stila website for $40 each. I decided to check beautycrunch.com for the No. 4 and BINGO! There it was, for $14!

The Front Cover Look No. 3 palette makes an appearance in this Face of the Day.

I love No. 4’s neutral peachy pink and brown…

Stila Front Cover Look No. 4

  • Nude eyeshadow: a matte peach-beige with large flecks of silver glitter
  • Icon eyeshadow: a shimmery pink peach
  • Twig eyeshadow: a shimmery rich chocolate
  • Heat blush: a peachy tan matte
  • Inviting lipgloss: a shimmery peach gloss with gold and silver glitter

Face of the Day: Pink and Brown Smokey Eye with MAC Emanuel Ungaro, Suite Array and Sheer Minerals

October 16th, 2008 by Karen 17 Comments

I knew I’d be working closely with the new girl at work today, training her on our filing system and some billing stuff, so I wanted to look as polished and semi-reliable (ha!) as possible. I decided to wear this soft, smokey pink and brown eye. It has just the teeniest touch of sparkle and draws heavily on a few of MAC’s recent collections, including Emanuel Ungaro, Suite Array and Sheer Minerals.

The look was actually my second choice this morning. At first I’d wanted to wear blue, perhaps coupled with high heels, a feather boa and something with sequins, but I didn’t want to end the day thought of as the crazy chick at work, so I went with the upstanding and responsible citizen look instead. 🙂

  1. First, I primed my lids with a layer of Benefit Birthday Suit cream shadow applied with a fingertip.
  2. Next, I layered the light pink shade from the MAC Rose Suites Eye Shadow Duo directly on top of Birthday Suit using a Sonia Kashuk Large Eye Shadow Brush.
  3. With the same brush, I swept MAC Mineral Eye Shadow onto the lid and just barely into the crease, concentrating most of the color on the outer third of the lid (the side closer to the ear).
  4. Then, with a MAC 239 eye shadow brush, I applied the dark pink shade from the MAC Rose Suites Eye Shadow Duo in the outer third of the crease and, softly sweeping with a MAC 217 blending brush, soften away any harsh lines.
  5. Using MAC Rave Pearlglide liner, I lined my upper lash line…
  6. … and lined my lower lash line with Lancome Le Stylo Waterproof in Noir. Sweeping with the Le Stylo’s sponge tip end, I diffused the color until all that remained was a very faint line.

To finish the look, I curled my lashes with my trusty Shu Uemura lash curler and added two coats of Chanel Exceptionnel mascara in Smoky Noir.

MAC Blue Zone Face of the Day

October 11th, 2008 by Karen 36 Comments

You know how Picasso went through his blue phase? Well, for my look today I thought I’d follow Pablo’s lead.

Once I made up my mind about blue, I cleared space on the bathroom sink and set out some products from the recent MAC Suite Array collection.

I hate having a lot of errands and household chores to do over the weekend, but sometimes that’s just how it goes. I did this blue and purple eye while I whined my way through five loads of laundry.

  1. I started the look by priming my lids with Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer to give the shadows extra staying power.
  2. Next, I applied MAC Rave Pearlglide Eye Liner onto the lid.
  3. I swept the dark shade from the MAC Blue Zone eye duo directly on top of the liner with a Sonia Kashuk Large Eye Shadow Brush.
  4. With the tip of my ring finger moving in a circular motion, I rubbed in the pan of the light shade from the MAC Blue Zone eye duo. I patted the finger onto the center of each lid to deposit the color.
  5. Then, I lined both my upper and lower water lines with MAC Black Russian Pearlglide liner. Thanks to readers Tricia and Vero for bringing to my attention that MAC’s Pearlglide liners aren’t approved for use on the water line. It’s best to skip the Pearlglide in this step and use something like MAC Technakohl liner instead. Thanks, Tricia and Vero!

To finish the eyes, I curled my lashes and added two coats of Tarte 4 Day Lash Stain mascara (I’m going to review this soon).

I kept the cheeks light with Clinique Fresh Bloom Allover Color in Almond Blossom and topped off the look with a soft pink lip using MAC Modesty Creamsheen Lipstick and Stila Grapefruit Lip Glaze gloss.

How was your day? Did you do anything fun? The highlight of my day was the brief hour I went out for lunch with El Hub. We had Puerto Rican at Sol Food in San Rafael. It’s one of my favorite places up here and really hits the spot when you’re in the mood for home cookin’ (and carbs!).

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

A Copper, Tan and Blue Eye with Cargo Color Palette in Vienna

October 8th, 2008 by Karen 47 Comments

Hi, girlies! Today was one of those days where things were just non-stop craziness at work. I was training a new hire and trying to do 20 other things at the same time — not the best conditions to be training someone in — and everything had to be done like five minutes ago. I’m really glad to be home. 🙂

Before I kick back with my veggie burrito in front of the Tivo (I haven’t watched Monday night’s Heroes yet; still lovin’ ya, Peter Petrelli!), here’s the look I wore to work today. I knew today would be a rough day and wanted to wear something colorful (while still safe for the office) and upbeat. It’s a shimmery copper and tan eye with blue accents and features a few different holiday and fall products, including the new Cargo Color Palette in Vienna ($28).

One of eight Cargo eye shadow palettes released specifically for Sephora this fall, Vienna contains four huge pans of uber-blendable, shimmery shadow in copper, beige, tan and slate blue.

Step by Step: The Eyes

  1. First, I primed my lids with Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer (makes the shadows last longer).
  2. Next, I applied Vienna’s beige shade on my brow bone with a Sonia Kashuk Large Eye Shadow Brush.
  3. Then, I swept Vienna’s tan shade into the crease with a MAC 217 blending brush.
  4. I patted Vienna’s copper shade onto my lids and just barely into the crease with the same Sonia Kashuk Large Eye Shadow Brush from step 2.
  5. Next, I wet a Sonia Kashuk Angled Eye Shadow Brush with a spritz of MAC Fix+ and swept the wet brush head across the pan of slate blue eye shadow to pick up the color. I applied the wet shadow to my upper lash line, thickening the line as it moved closer to the outer corner of the eye.
  6. With the same Sonia brush, I applied the blue shade again, this time on the lower water line.

To finish the eyes, I curled my lashes and added one coat of Chanel Exceptionnel mascara in Noir.

Face of the Day: Chanel Smoky Eye Quad

October 1st, 2008 by Karen 44 Comments

Heya, ladies! I had a couple extra minutes to get ready for work this morning (meaning I didn’t wait until the last minute) and tried this look with the Chanel Smoky Eye Quad.

The more I use this quad, the more I fall in love. It’s probably one of the most user-friendly (user-friendliest?) smokey eye sets I’ve seen in ages.
