Face of the Day: Wonder Mint Teal Lashes

May 15th, 2008 by Karen 57 Comments

Hi, cuties. I have tomorrow off, woot! To celebrate the end of my regular work week (not counting blog hours, of course), I went all out with my lashes today, applying four layers of Clarins Wonder Mint mascara.

The reason my hair looks all windblown here is because I’m sitting in front of a fan. It was downright volcanic in Marin County today — just absolutely unbearably hot. I tried not to venture outside the reach of the fans at home. Out of desperation, I did get up for some ice cream and to grab the TV remote, but I almost melted on my way to the kitchen.

Because the weather out here has been hotter than Christian Bale in a Speedo, I wanted to keep my look light and perspiration-proof. To maintain the emphasis on my lashes, I went with a slice of light violet on the lid.

  1. Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer over the entire eye
  2. Clinique Quick Eyes Cream Shadow in Rock Violet on the lid and barely into the crease
  3. Shu Uemura eyeshadow in Spring Breeze all over the lid and barely into the crease
  4. Prescriptives Kohl Eye Pencil in Blue Grotto on the upper and lower waterline (Side note: This pencil is fantastic! Look out for the review in the next few days)
  5. Four coats of Clarins Wonder Mint mascara on the upper lashes only

Face of the Day: Bold Blue and Teal Eye

May 12th, 2008 by Karen 47 Comments

Hey, girls. It’s Monday and I’m feeling kind of blah, so to improve my outlook on this most dreaded of week days, I tried this really fun blue/teal eye with Sonia Kashuk’s Blue Lagoon Eye Shadow Quad ($9.99).

I used all four colors in the Blue Lagoon Quad, along with MAC Indigo Eye Pencil. Here’s the color map and shade placement I used:

MAC Cosmetics Mulch Eyeshadow Face of the Day

May 7th, 2008 by Karen 47 Comments

mac-cosmetics-mulch-fotd-3

I started this face of the day with one pan — ONE PAN! — of MAC Mulch Eyeshadow. From there, it quickly spiraled out of control into a look with seven different shades. I don’t know what’s going on with me, but I think it has something to do with an upcoming deadline. The more pressed for time I get, the more makeup I want to wear! I know I can’t be the only one who loves to procrastinate this way. 😉

Here are the colors I used starting from the left and going counter-clockwise:

  • MAC Beige-ing Shadestick
  • MAC Mulch
  • MAC Nanogold
  • MAC Showstopper
  • MAC Rich Flesh
  • MAC Next to Nothing
  • MAC Your Ladyship Pigment

The color map below shows where I put the different shades, with the exception of Beige-ing Shade Stick, which I first applied over the entire lid and then layered everything else above it.

  1. MAC Next to Nothing – browbone
  2. MAC Rich Flesh – crease
  3. MAC Mulch – outer half of crease
  4. MAC Your Ladyship – lid
  5. MAC Showstopper – outer V
  6. MAC Nanogold – inner lid
  7. MAC Mulch – lower lash line

Because I have to go to the office today (and should show at least a little restraint), I stuck to a light pink cheek and lip. [Continue reading…]

Face of the Day: MAC Smokey Brown and Purple Eye

April 30th, 2008 by Karen 32 Comments

mac-cosmetics-fotd-043008-eye-1

Mama always said, “When life hands you insomnia, hide your dark circles with concealer.”

Okay, my mom didn’t actually say that because she doesn’t wear makeup (I know! The apple fell so far from the tree!).

Anyhoo, I was inspecting the purplish nether regions under my eyes this morning and feeling pretty crappy because of the whole no sleep thing, so I decided to run with it and try a purplish-brown smokey eye. The result improved my sour mood and put a lil’ spring in my step, for sure!

The shadows I used from left to right:

  • MAC Showstopper (matte)
  • MAC Newly Minted (matte)
  • MAC Frisco (matte)
  • MAC Saddle (matte)
  • MAC Retrospeck (lustre)
  • MAC Star Violet (veluxe pearl)
  • MAC Sable (frost) – Whoops! I forgot to swatch this one. Click here to view a swatch.

I haven’t been a regular user of matte shadows in the past, but I went all out with them this time. Thanks to MAC Senior Makeup Artist Jennifer Karsten’s advice, I’ve decided I’m going to work diligently to couple them with shimmer shades to create more depth in my eye makeup looks.

The color map below shows where I placed the different eyeshadows…

  1. MAC Frisco – browbone
  2. MAC Saddle – crease
  3. MAC Star Violet – lid
  4. MAC Sable – outer third of lid
  5. MAC Showstopper – outer V
  6. MAC Retrospeck – inner third of lid
  7. MAC Newly Minted – upper lash line (I smudged this on top MAC Technakohl eyeliner in Graphblack)
  8. MAC Saddle and Sable – lower lash line

Trying to balance the look, I kept the lips neutral and the cheeks light.

Dior Goldrush Face of the Day: A Brown and Khaki Eye

April 21st, 2008 by Karen 35 Comments

I must confess: I have a kindergarten crush on the new Dior Golds 569 palette. Actually, I have room in my heart for all five of the colors in the new Dior quint, but my favorite is khaki. Today I paired it with MAC Soba eyeshadow (in the crease ) to create a brown and khaki daytime eye.

Dior me, baby!

MAC Fafi and Laura Mercier Gold Digger for a Warm Weather Face of the Day

April 14th, 2008 by Karen 66 Comments

makeup and beauty blog fotd

In typical Bay Area fashion, grey, overcast skies quickly replaced the sunny, warm weather we’d had for a few days, but I refuse to let go! I wasn’t up for this uber-red MAC look here, but I still wanted to try something bright and lively. So, this morning I gave this summery bronze and gold eye a try, featuring colors from the MAC Fafi and Laura Mercier Gold Digger collections. I first thought about going for broke with false eyelashes, too, but those will have to wait ’til next time.

Matte coral cheeks and shimmery coral lips complete the look. Now, all I need is a warm beach, a pair of flip flops and a large Jamba Juice (Orange Dream Machine, yum)!

MAC Makeup – MAC Russian Red Lipglass Face of the Day

April 5th, 2008 by Karen 45 Comments

mac cosmetics russian red lipglass fotd 4

Do you ever find yourself obsessed with makeup and style from a certain era? A few years ago I went through a 1940s phase, and I wore this Dita Von Teese inspired look every day for months!

Because MAC Russian Red Lipglass is so va-va-voom, I went with simple, neutral eyes using MAC Ricepaper Eyeshadow, MAC Soba Eyeshadow and fatty black eyeliner, courtesy o’ MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack. I also like this same basic look with cheeks and lips in either plum or pink. Or, if you can pull it off, pale pink cheeks and beige lips look great, too (tres Angelina Jolie).

Face of the Day: MAC Cosmetics Heatherette Trio 1

March 31st, 2008 by Karen 51 Comments

I finally wrapped my grubby little hands around MAC Heatherette Eyeshadow Trio 1 last weekend, and I have to say: I love this bad boy!

MAC Cosmetics Heatherette Trio 1 Fotd 4

Sometimes, in trios and quads, one or two of the shades just aren’t up to snuff, but all three shades MAC chose for Trio 1 — a pink, green and black — work well together. That said, Mood Ring, the green shade (more of a teal) is definitely my favorite of the bunch.

For the green, pink and black smokey eye look below, I layered each of the shadows over MAC Pink Pearl Pigment (also part of the Heatherette collection). Layering Pink Pearl Pigment underneath these shadows creates an effect similar to how the colors of a peacock’s feathers can seem to change with the light. So purty!

Even though this eye pushes the envelope as far as its appropriateness for day wear, I wore it to the movies yesterday afternoon and didn’t feel out of place.
