Unsung Makeup Heroes: Dolce & Gabbana Peach Blush

June 11th, 2013 by Karen 31 Comments

Dolce & Gabbana Peach Blush
Wearing Dolce & Gabbana Peach Blush ($45) on my cheeks

A couple years ago I wore this blush all the time. Almost daily.

Dolce & Gabbana Peach was my jam!

Actually, now that I think about it, it still is, and if I ever had to commit to just one blush for the rest of my life (the horror!), this could be it.

Boy, that sure would be tough, though… Every day seems to bring a pretty, new pan to discover/devour.

But I’ve always come back to Peach. It just never looks fake or heavy-handed. And it blends easily, looks great layered with bronzer or all by itself alone, and it lasts all day long, too.

Among peach blushes, that’s the total package right there.

Cool and Casual, MAC’s Bright Peach Royal Sunset Powder Blush Begs To Be Worn Beachside

June 6th, 2013 by Karen 36 Comments

MAC Royal Sunset Blush
That’s MAC Royal Sunset Blush ($21) on my cheeks…

Judging by its name, MAC’s Royal Sunset blush could have gone the route of princess tiaras/tiny sandwiches/stuffy tweed, but instead it took a detour on High Tea Street toward Beach Boho Babe Avenue.

MAC Royal Sunset Powder Blush
Introducing Her Royal Highness, MAC Royal Sunset Powder Blush ($21)…

Bright on cheeks and surprisingly playful, Royal Sunset builds to an intensely cool coral flush. Of the three blushes in the MAC All About Orange collection, I think it’s the brightest, smoothest (in terms of texture) and the coolest in terms of tone.

It’s the kind of blush I’d wear to a low-key beach wedding, one where the guests and wedding party are barefoot and dogs are running around in bow ties (yippee!). 🙂

Casual and fun, know what I mean?

Run Six Miles in a Minute (Or Just Look Like You Did) With MAC’s Immortal Flower Blush

June 5th, 2013 by Karen 33 Comments

MAC Immortal Flower Blush
That’s me wearing MAC Immortal Flower Blush ($21)

Prior to today, if I’d heard the phrase, “immortal flowers,” I would have thought, “plastic plants,” like the kind my eccentric aunt hoards.

Now, though, I’m still thinking that…but I’m also thinking about a blush from MAC’s new All About Orange collection.

MAC Immortal Flower Powder Blush
Immortal Flower Powder Blush, $21

Bright peach MAC Immortal Flower Blush is such a dainty delight. It’s almost the exact same color as my cheeks after I finish a six-mile run…sans the icky perspiration and treadmill karaoke, which is when you silently mouth the words to whatever you’re listening to while you’re running and occasionally fist pump in the air (so help me gawd, when Beyonce is belting in my ear about claiming my diva status, it cannot be helped).

I’ll Take a Grande Honey Jasmine To Go, Please: The New MAC Honey Jasmine Blush, That Is

June 4th, 2013 by Karen 29 Comments

MAC Honey Jasmine Blush
Wearing the new $21 MAC Honey Jasmine Blush from the All About Orange Collection

Got a new tea tonight from Trader Joe’s. Honey Jasmine. I’m really looking forward to having a cup tonight.

Mmm… Honey Jasmine.

Kidding! It’s not a tea, or at least I don’t think so, although it does sound delish, doesn’t it?

It’s a new blush from MAC — a fresh squeezed coral cutie from the MAC All About Orange Collection, and it’s making me think of tea.

And Honey Boo Boo.

Yeah…I really need to stop watching reality TV (she says, while programming her Tivo to record Million Dollar Listing: New York).

Swear to gawd, I just did that. 🙂

MAC Honey Jasmine Powder Blush
Hello, Honey! — Honey Jasmine Powder Blush

Oh, and if you have a tan, babe, Honey Jasmine sure looks sweet on bronzed cheeks.

I picked up a little more color on my quick SoCal jaunt last week, and I’ve been wearing Honey Jasmine every day since.

And for comparison, Chanel Frivole

I gauged the wear time last weekend during a very important business meeting… Okay, it wasn’t a meeting. It was a Law & Order: SVU marathon. 🙂

When I peeled myself off the couch after four hours, I took a look in the mirror, and my blush seemed a touch darker than it did earlier in the day. In my mind, I heard the SVU “Dun-DUUN!!” and wondered if Benson or Stabler would be able to solve this mystery…

Probably. They’re talented like that.

These Pacifica Radiant Shimmer Coconut Multiples Were Designed for Desert Islands Where You Can Only Bring One Thing to Wear on Your Eyes, Cheeks and Lips

May 31st, 2013 by Karen 24 Comments

Pacifica Radiant Shimmer Coconut Multiples
Here I’m wearing the Pacifica Radiant Shimmer Coconut Multiples color in Bronze on my cheeks

“Mo’ coco, mo’ coco, mo’ coco!”

Those are either the lyrics to Ice-T’s comeback song/ode to his voluptuous wife (is that woman’s butt for real!?), or what goes through my head when I open the new $12 Pacifica Radiant Shimmer Coconut Multiples. 🙂

Pacifica infused this palette’s multitasking bronze, pink and beige shimmers with coconut extract, and if you put a little on the back of your hand and sniff, they even smell like it.

The colors feel kinda wet and creamy in their pans but dry down to a powdery finish as you work them into your skin.

Neato.

Wear ’em on your cheeks, eyes, lips — heck, your entire body — for sheer color and a soft glow.

And if you want more pigment, you can always layer.

Bronzed and Fabulous! A Too Faced Bronzer for Every Occasion

May 30th, 2013 by Karen 44 Comments

Too Faced Cosmetics bronzer
A Too Faced bronzer for every occasion

How many bronzers belong in your wardrobe?

Wait — wardrobe?

Yup, a bronzer wardrobe, because it can be nice to have a selection of different bronzers to choose from for different events.

Like a bronzer for date nights, maybe one for brunch, one for big meetings at work, and another one for epic events and fantastical days, like winning the lottery and collecting one of those gigantic checks, or visiting a Petco on kitten adoption day, sweeping your arms wide open and roaring, “OPEN ALL THE CAGES! I’LL TAKE THEM ALL!”

Too Faced Cosmetics is determined to change the way beauty babes look at bronzer.

They’re hoping that instead of relying on just one bronzer to wear year round, bronzer-loving babes (and guys) will see the benefits of wearing different bronzers on different days — much like how we think of lipsticks.

Yee-haw! It’s a bronzer jamboree!

Golden Bronze on Board! MAC Nude On Board Pro Longwear Bronzer Sets Sail to the Land of Lazy Bronzing

May 23rd, 2013 by Karen 19 Comments

MAC Nude on Board Pro Longwear Bronzer
That’s MAC Nude on Board Pro Longwear Bronzer ($30) below my cheekbones…

While I’m willing to give up some things in the interest of streamlining — spare toothbrushes (do you really need more than one of them?), clothes that no longer fit me and that fourth half-empty jar of Tiger Balm — I refuse to relinquish any all-important necessities like shoes, handbags, earrings, jeans, lipsticks and, in the summer months, bronzer because, I mean, you just never know, right?

You just never know…

You just never know when a freak cold front will blow through town in the middle of August (well…), and you’ll want to warm up with MAC’s Nude on Board Pro Longwear Bronzing Powder.

It’s perfect for times when I need a little extra warmth and contouring — but less than full-on “tiara and feather boa” levels.

MAC Nude on Board Pro Longwear Bronzer
Nude on Board Pro Longwear Bronzer, $30

A golden tan powder, Nude on Board leaves my skin lightly toasted, and like MAC’s Refined Golden Bronzer (from the same Temperature Rising collection), its micro-fine flecks of golden glitter, much finer than grains of sand, give skin that extra something-something.

It’s a subtle effect, but I think that’s the beauty of it.

To apply, first find a fainting couch… Then, leisurely lower yourself down onto it, and languidly apply the satiny smooth powder just below your cheekbones.

It won’t take much muscle at all, as the application is darned-near effortless.

Yeah, it brings out yo’ lazy like that! 🙂

The LORAC Mint Edition Palette Plays It Cool

May 21st, 2013 by Karen 20 Comments

LORAC Mint Edition Palette
Minty! That’s LORAC’s Mint Edition Palette refreshing my eyes, cheeks and lips

Not that I need another clutch…but if someone were to build one based on LORAC’s Mint Edition Eye/Cheek Palette, I would not be averse to the idea.

I’m just sayin’.

LORAC's Mint Edition Palette

How cute is this!?

With the silver and black accents?

I used to rock a pair of mint green Bongo Jeans in the exact same color about a zillion years back (it had zippers and bows around the ankles), and now I suddenly have the urge to put my hair up in a side ponytail with a scrunchie and peg my pants…

Mint — it’s EVERYWHERE!

What year is this again? Did we just go back in time?

Wait — I don’t think so, but LORAC looks like they did for the retro design. This eye, cheek and lip set launched earlier this spring, but it looks like it could have been released a few decades before that.

Regardless of the palette’s release date, mint is having a moment — I’m seeing it on purses, shoes, nails, makeup — and Mint Edition is riding the wave…

LORAC's Mint Edition Palette

A complete look

LORAC included all of the basics for a minty fresh look in this $42 set (a $160 value) — eight eye shadows (four mattes and four shimmers), a powder highlighter, a powder blush and a full-sized liquid lipstick.
