How Do You Do MAC Face and Body? MAC Face and Body Foundation Application Tips

September 20th, 2012 by Karen 39 Comments

mac face and body foundation application tips

When MBB reader Indoorkitty asked me a question about my current foundation love, MAC Face and Body, I thought, “Great time to gush!”

But first, allow me to gush for a minute… 🙂

Wait — what?! You haven’t tried MAC Face and Body before?? Check it — it’s a total beauty staple, like bread, gravy (for Tabs) and milk. I love that the coverage is flexible, so I can wear it sheer or build it up, and the finish? Oh, the finish… mostly matte, but with a hint of glow. Dewy, like I just walked under a mister, but not all wet-looking like I loitered underneath it for long. It’s just enough dew to keep your skin from looking flat.

And it does all of its awesomeness without feeling heavy at all. In fact, it feels like I’m hardly wearing anything at all! Yup, my previous MAC foundation affair with Studio Sculpt ended on my first date with MAC Face and Body.

Okay, okay, I’m done gushing (for now)… Let’s talk about Indoorkitty’s question:

“Karrrren! This used to be one of my favorite foundations but I’ve forgotten how I put it on. I’m doing a bunch of work travel and srsly considering just bringing it with me + playing with each brush I own in my spare time to find the mojo again. I think I used to use a stippling brush then buffed it out… Which brush do you use to apply/buff it? Please share! It pains me to have such a massive bottle of this in the right shade without being able to put it on successfully.”

-Indoorkitty

Hi Indoorkitty,

First things first: love your screen name (and always have!). Second, and more relevant to your question, Face and Body’s texture can make it a little tough to work with, especially if you’re out of practice. It’s kinda runny, but don’t give up on it! You’ll get the hang of working with it again. Ultimately, it all depends on the level of coverage you crave.

If all you want is a sheer semblance of sheer sheerness (in other words, very sheer coverage), use your fingers and really work the product into your skin. That’s what I do sometimes. It gives a light hint of tint, which is usually enough to mask my red areas but not enough to cover blemishes.

When I’m in the mood for more coverage (with this, anywhere up to medium), I’ll use a foundation brush instead of my fingers, and apply it in thin/light layers.

You could use a traditional flat foundation brush for this, one like the MAC 190, but I usually steer clear of those. For some reason, when I use them with MAC Face and Body, I get foundation streaks.

I like to apply this using a brush with a rounded head — feel like I get more of an airbrushed finish that way — and my fave is the Hourglass Foundation/Blush Brush No. 2. Unfortunately, it’s not cheap, but there are some good budget options, like the $10 Ecotools Bamboo Bronzer Brush, which has a similar shape.

Most mornings I’ll apply 2-3 sheer layers, swirling the brush head, and then once I reach a level of overall coverage I like, I zoom in and target the areas where I want a little more coverage, pushing the product into my skin there, rather than swirling.

Also an indoor kitty…

Optional: After I’m done doing my layers, I like to gently buff my entire face using a MAC 187 Duo Fibre Face Brush. I think it just sort of settles everything down… Sometimes I skip this step, but when I do, I’m really careful to blend in the foundation after my swirling/patting.

The MAC Face and Body Collection Dives Into a New Dimension of Skin Sculpting and Defining

September 12th, 2012 by Karen 36 Comments

mac face and body collection

“Almost done! Be down in five minutes!”

I wonder if boys are born knowing that that phrase up their actually means that they’re gonna be waiting at least another 30 minutes, or if it’s knowledge they acquire over the years.

Poor El Hub… Sometimes I think I can actually hear his eyes rolling when I yell to him from upstairs, “Almost done! Be down in five minutes!”

It’s all the little bits, ya know? Those are the things that can really add up to take so much time — the things like shading, contouring, highlighting and texturizing we do to give our makeup extra bamf!

You know how it goes… Like J. Renner told Ellen, you start with the basics. “Brows, lashes, lips — frame the face!” (at about 3:34 in the video). But then somewhere along the way, the makeup train derails. Next thing you know, you’re holding five brushes in one hand and two palettes in the other, and the sink is covered in fallout.

Possessed! That’s how you look, but you feel like the queen of the world! 🙂

If those little beauty bits — the things like sculpting, defining and adding texture to your skin — light your fire like they light mine, don’t miss the new MAC Face and Body collection, a 27-piece release.

It includes 13 travel-sized bottles of MAC Face and Body Foundation (1.7 ounces for $27 each, versus $35 for the regular 4-ounce bottles), six Pro Scultping Creams ($20 each), six shimmery Pressed Pigments ($21 each) and two brushes ($25 for the MAC 215, and $35 for the MAC 163).

Here’s a quick look at four pieces from the collection and a few first impressions…

MAC Unsung Heroes: Face and Body Foundation

September 7th, 2012 by Karen 34 Comments

mac face and body foundation

While there are many things I’ll miss about the world after the coming zombie apocalypse — hot showers, modern dentistry and Frosted Strawberry Pop Tarts among them — few losses will be missed as much as MAC Face and Body Foundation, one of my much-loved creature comforts.

I can’t imagine life in the badlands without it…

This sheer-to-medium coverage liquid foundation is just one of those fantastic MAC performers ($33 for the 4-ounce bottle above), and it’s the only foundation I’ve been wanting to wear these days.

Yesterday morning while walking Tabs outside on his leash, we saw that the leaves have started to turn yellow and fall from the trees. There’s also a new chill in the air early in the mornings.

Yup, it’s fall. Or darn near. And now that it is, I feel like it’s time for a more dressed up face look — something less dewy and casual than my spring and summer routine with NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer.

What an Alluring Blush! I Can’t Resist Illamasqua’s Powder Blusher in Allure

September 6th, 2012 by Karen 30 Comments

illamasqua allure blush

“A lure…? Like a fishing lure?”

No, silly! Allure. Like alluring, as in the new Illamasqua Powder Blusher in Allure, a dusky, rosy pink with sand-sized flecks of golden glitter.

It’s part of the new 12-piece Illamasqua Generation Q collection, which I haven’t spotted at Sephora yet, but I saw it online over at illamasqua.com.

Lots of bold eye and lip colors in the launch…

What do you think of these model shots from the campaign? Aren’t they great? Very edgy and real.

As for the blush? love Gorgeous! I wasn’t sure what to expect based on that swatch down there, but I love how natural it looks, as long as I apply it with a light touch.

The little flecks of glitter don’t really show up very well in these pics (I tried!), but they’re there…doing their glittery thing.

What’s That Twinkling in the Sky? Oh, That’s a Satellite of Love! NARS Satellite of Love Highlighter Blush

September 5th, 2012 by Karen 30 Comments

NARS Satellite of Love Highlighting Blush

“Kitty Glitter Enthusiast.” I’m thinking about adding that to my business cards, which currently read, “Assistant to the CEO, Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC.”

Made for cat ladiesI looked around online for a place to play Kitty Glitter for free, but I don’t know… I don’t trust those online casinos.

The couple hours I spent hootin’ and hollerin’ in front of that penny slot machine last weekend filled my eyes with sparkles, and I’ve been extra obsessed with glitter ever since.

It’s either that…or NARS Satellite of Love Highlighting Blush.

Like a Snickers bar, this $28 illuminating highlighting powder, one of 22 pieces in the new Andy Warhol Pop Holiday 2012 collection, really satisfies. 🙂 It instantly brightens faces with its sheer, peachy powder and golden glitter.

Lately when glitter calls, I grab a skunk brush and carefully, lightly apply Satellite of Love on my upper cheekbones, down the bridge of my nose and atop my cupid’s bow. Careful is the key word, too; otherwise, we’re talkin’ disco diva territory (which I admit, sometimes I like).

Party Till the Break of Dawn With Lightweight, Long Lasting MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance

September 4th, 2012 by Karen 30 Comments

mac prep prime natural radiance review

Tabs loves big bashes as much as the next cat celebrity. In fact, he’s known among members of the A-list cat community for throwing some of most lavish shindigs and soirees in the feline world. Of course, as his assistant, I get saddled with the prep work, while he gets to have all the fun.

Today he has me scoping out potential venues for his upcoming Halloween bash. Views are a must, which means it has to be a climbing friendly venue with some height (maybe something like this). He also wants a no-host gravy bar, fresh sushi, catnip cocktails and a DJ (I’m interviewing some dude named David Guetta for the job tonight).

Somewhere in there, I also have to order 723 custom-made kitty masks and schedule 22 menu tastings (not surprisingly, the only part of the party planning process Tabs likes).

So, yeah…it’s fixin’ to be a long night.

I guess it’s a good thing I’m wearing the new MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance. 🙂

mac prep prime natural radiance product shot

One word: awesomeness!

Like the Highlander of face primers, there can be only one! — and for me right now that one is Natural Radiance ($40 for a 1.7-ounce bottle). (At least for now, LOL!)

It’s a lightweight gel primer with a texture halfway between an airy mousse and a creamy lotion; the consistency reminds me of Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel.

Applied after moisturizer but before foundation, it’s designed to extend the wear time of face makeup and blur fine lines, pores and imperfections, making the skin appear (almost) flawless, and ready for you to pop your favorite face products on top.

Shimmer Turns the Wrong Side of the Bed Right: An Early Morning Makeup Tip

August 31st, 2012 by Karen 31 Comments

a makeup tip for glowy skin
Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Moonstone on the left and MAC Strobe Cream on the right

Hmm… I wonder what Tabs is doing right now.

I’m typing this on my laptop at the little desk in my hotel room in Tahoe (Stateline, on the Nevada side of the lake) while El Hub quietly snores behind me like a husky, little angel. Between you and me…I’m hoping that my clacking on the keyboard wakes him up so that I can innocently ask him to go get me some coffee from the Starbucks in the lobby. 🙂

Tabs is back at the Novato offices of Makeup and Beauty Blog, probably working from his cat tower in the living room.

I bet he’s probably thinking (and laughing maniacally!) about how he woke me up early yesterday…

At exactly 4 a.m., he stealthily approached the bed while El Hub and I were still sawing logs, somehow made it up on to the comforter without making a sound (amazing considering that he weighs almost 20 pounds), and then threw himself on my bladder!

Whether it was for sport or gravy, the world will never know…

Needless to say, it woke me up, and not on the right side of the bed, so out came the shimmery face lotion.

a makeup tip for glowy skin

Perfect for partying till the break of dawn (ZOMG! I can’t believe there were mornings I’d walk through the door at 6 a.m.!) or for pet owners/assistants with acrobatic, time-insensitive cats, these little bottles are potions of face-perking power!

Like yesterday, I rubbed a dollop of the shimmery lotion all over my face, after my sunscreen but before my foundation (and/or tinted moisturizer, if I were to wear one), using my fingers, but sometimes I’ll use a foundation brush.

The Hourglass Foundation/Blush Brush No. 2: A Brush With Greatness (Too Bad It Also Brushes Budgets Aside)

August 30th, 2012 by Karen 20 Comments

hourglass foundation blush brush no 2 closeup

Before I left for Tahoe this morning, I triple-checked to make sure that my Hourglass Foundation/Blush Brush No. 2 was snug as a bug in a rug in my makeup bag.

I wasn’t taking any chances…not with a tool as terrific as this.

A medium-sized face brush with a round, domed head and synthetic fibers made of high-grade Takelon, this $58 beast is one of my top tools because of something it doesn’t do, instead of something it does.

So…I know, $58 is a lot of tacos, but this brush never, ever streaks. It delivers a smooth, even, flawless finish every single time. If you’re looking for that airbrushed look, the No. 2 is your gal.

I think I may have mentioned it a few times before…

Okay, more than a few, LOL!

hourglass foundation blush brush no 2 product shot

I love this brush so much that it’s one of the products on my “can’t leave home without it” list, both because of how useful it is, and because it’s the only foundation brush I’ve ever used (and I’ve used quite a few) that never, ever sheds.

Never sheds nor streaks? That’s not bad.

I used the No. 2 throughout the summer to apply my foundation and tinted moisturizer, and not once did I have to pick bristles off my face.
