How Often Do You Make Big Changes To Your Hairstyle?

December 3rd, 2009 by Karen 73 Comments

hair-before-and-after-1-1

I walked out of the salon yesterday with five inches of hair cut trimmed off, lighter highlights and a new set of bangs. I wouldn’t call it a big change because my hair is still long, but I definitely feel like a different girl with this cut. 🙂

My last dramatic haircut was a decage ago — I chopped off my uber-long locks into a chin-length bob. Although I haven’t made any big changes in the past three years, I don’t rule out going short again in the future.

Jake Gyllenhaal: His Best Hair?

December 2nd, 2009 by Karen 34 Comments

jake-gyllenhall-his-best-hair

Dear Jake,

Did you get the card I sent for turkey day (gobble gobble!)? I hope so. 🙂 Yours still hasn’t arrived, but I’m sure it’s on its way. The Post Office has been busy as of late…

I was surprised to read about you and Reese. Thank goodness the rumors were untrue, but I’m here if you ever need a shoulder.

Yours always,

Karen

In my frantic search to corroborate the breakup rumors, I couldn’t help but notice the breadth of Jake’s hairstyles over the years. He makes bangs look so very fetching!

If/when I earn that spot on Jeopardy! and “Jake Gyllenhaal’s hair” comes up as a topic, I think I’ll be prepared.

Jakeypoo factoids

  • Born Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal in Los Angeles (December 19, 1980)
  • Family has deep Hollywood ties. Dad’s a director, Mom’s a screenwriter, and big sis Maggie’s a star.
  • Enjoys woodworking and cooking
  • Acting debut was in the 1991 film City Slickers
  • Graduated from high school in 1998 and then went on to attend Columbia University, studying Eastern religions and Philosophy; dropped out to pursue film career.
  • Feature films include Brokeback Mountain, The Day After Tomorrow, Donnie Darko (my JG fave!) and more

P.S. Jake, I know you’re busy, but before I go, may I ask a favor? I’ve noticed you’ve been growing out your hair for Prince of Persia (due out next spring). Please, please condition at least once/week. Split ends = not cute. 🙂

Which of Jake's hairstyles do you like best?

How Often Do You Use Hot Rollers?

December 1st, 2009 by Karen 77 Comments

hot rollers

Even though I think I’m pretty adventurous with hair products and tools (don’t get me started on how I used to flat iron my hair with a real deal IRON), I’ve never used a set of hot rollers.

No particular reason why, really. I just never got around to it.

But curling irons can take forever to use! I’ve been wearing my hair curly a lot lately, and I want to get back some of the time (20 minutes in some cases) it takes me to curl.

That’s why I picked up a set of Jilbere ($35) ceramic hot rollers at Sally Beauty last weekend.

Please, oh, PLEASE, beauty gods, save me from burning myself while I figure them out! 🙂

5 Ways to Boost Your Hair’s Volume

November 29th, 2009 by Karen 14 Comments

big-hair-tips-and-tricks

What’s a girl to do when she’s longing for big hair with tons of volume?

A few days ago I asked you for your volumizing secrets, and you gals shared some fabulous tips and tricks.

1. Blow dry upside down

To pump up the volume, MBB readers love blow drying upside down. t3

“OOOO! I love big hair! I blast root pumper spray DIRECTLY on my roots; none of this spraying mousse in the hands first business. Then, I blowdry my hair with my head flipped upside-down from start to almost finish. Once about 85% dry I use a round brush at the roots for extra volume. This creates volume that lasts almost all day!”
— Morgan

“Personally, I have tried a number of tricks. I like to spray some root-voluminizing spray (I could only afford things like Tressemme or Garnier), and I blow dry my hair upside down with a diffuser. I then add in some mousse while I’m blow drying it to set in the style. If I am straightening my hair, I will blow dry it with a large round brush upwards to give it a little lift. Having enough volume has always been a issue for me cause I have such long hair, but I try my best!”
— Genesis C

2. Try a new volumizing product

There’s a big world of products out there devoted to big hair! A few reader faves:aveda-volumizing-tonic

“My hair is really fine but there’s a lot of it, so I use Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic at the roots, paired with their Phomollient foam. When I start blow-drying I make sure to lift and blast the roots, then use the Marilyn Tuxedo big round brush — totally makes a difference.”
— Trude

“I have tried everything to give my hair more volume: I blow dry it upside down; I use root lifter; I use huge velcro rollers; I tease it. Heck, I thought cutting my hair off would help, but it didn’t. I do like the Tresemme 24 Hour Body Finishing Spray; I think that works best on my hair.”
— Katrina

“Got2B 2Sexy mousse — this stuff is like a Pammie boob job for your hair. My hair’s pretty normal, color damaged, but medium-thick hair: a good pump of that, combed through my hair upside down and FOOMP! Suddenly, I have GIANT voluptuous hair that actually holds a curl for more than ten minutes.”
— Molly

“I use this awesome stuff called Volume Fusion Spray by Eufora. I LOVE it. I have the thickest, most asian hair you could possibly get. It gives me AMAZING volume when I blowdry my hair upside down.”
— xtina

Got2B Fat-Tastic Mousse: Big Volume, Small Price

November 26th, 2009 by Karen 5 Comments

MBB guest post!Today my Bay Area blogging buddy Marisol of A Dirty Martini Kind of Girl shares her new favorite budget beauty treasure, got2b Fat-Tastic Mousse.

got2b-fat-tastic-top

Why do we always want what we can’t have?

Even though I’ve gotten compliments on my curly hair, I’ve spent a lot of time and money on products to make it straight. Typically, I’ll use a ceramic flat iron, but I’m never completely happy with the volume I get.

It was on one of my random walks through the beauty aisles at Walgreens that something yellow and pretty caught my eye.

Got2b Fat-Tastic ($5), a thickening, plumping mousse infused with collagen, promises to make your hair feel thicker, denser, and full of body and life. Got2b claims their collagen also adds elasticity for overall stronger, luscious hair that holds styles all day long. Now tell me, what girl doesn’t want that?

Because I have thin hair, the flat iron works well, but then I spend a lot of time teasing and using hair spray to also give it volume.

Shakira: Her Best Hair?

November 26th, 2009 by Karen 13 Comments

Shakira: Her Best Hair?

I’ve spent a sizable chunk of this week dancing at home to Shakira’s new CD, She Wolf (it was released on Monday). I’m in love with the title track… Dang that thing’s catchy!

Would you believe that Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (born in Colombia on February 2, 1977) has sold almost 2 million albums for every year she’s been alive? Fifty million so far, to go with her two Grammies and seven Latin Grammy Awards.

And she’s finding some pretty cool ways to use her star status by supporting a number of charities and organizations, including the Pies Descalzos Foundation, a Colombian charity that helps fund construction of schools in impoverished areas, and UNICEF, for which she travels as a Goodwill Ambassador.

When it comes to travel, it must help that homegirl speaks fluent Spanish, English, Portuguese and Italian, or that she can sing classical Arabic and belly dance, too. Wow!

Straight Sexy Hair Smooth and Protect Packs Some Serious Multitasking Mojo

November 25th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

straight sexy hair smooth and protect

El Hub threatened to revolt over my hoarding of hairstyling products in the bathroom, which he compares to the beauty aisle at Rite Aid :), so in the name of marital harmony, it’s time I find more hair products that multi-task.

My latest discovery: Straight Sexy Hair Smooth & Protect Flat Iron Hairspray ($14).

Like four products in one, it’s a Vitamin B5-packed aerosol to protect hair from flat iron heat damage while smoothing out frizz, adding shine and moisture and imparting soft, touchable hold (smells faintly of coconut). All that, and it works on either dry OR damp hair.
