Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 806

March 31st, 2024 by Karen 2 Comments

Hello, friend. How’s it hopping? Hope you’re having a hoppy Easter. 🐰

Today I couldn’t help but think back to all the fun Easters we had with Tabs. That cat made everything feel like an event. Part of it was his personality. He was a boy cat, had that confident swagger. He could be calm, even around a bunch of kids, cars and other loud noises. He’d just casually lick his paw, slow blink, roll over and flash his tum. Little things didn’t phase him.

He also loved attention, which he got a lot of also because of this blog and where I was in life. We worked on the blog together. He was both my employer (hehe!) and my creative muse. For many, many years I worked hours and hours every day blogging, and Tabs was right there for it all. He loved every photo shoot, or at least he seemed to, even when I was bossing him around. “Come here, Tabs! OK, picture time. There you go. Look at me, look at the camera! Good boy!” And I’d be snapping away with my camera. He’d just meow, saunter over and flash his gorgeous tum again.

On holidays like Easter, I’d dress him up in, yes, a custom-made felt cat collar or other flashy outfit, and he’d go along with it for a photo shoot. It always took lots of pictures to get a good one, as is generally always the case for blogging or social media. The pics look good most of the time, but you know how it is. It probably took 12 shots to get one perfect one. That’s how it is.

But, I kid you not, every time I’d take down his costume box / wardrobe from the closet, Tabs would come running from wherever he was in the house. I’d hear a thud from somewhere upstairs (him jumping down from a counter or the bed to the floor), and then doomp, doomp, doomp from his paws on the floor and down the stairs. He knew it meant we were 1) going outside for a walk and 2) going to be spending time together. Two things he loved.

The personality we conveyed on the blog was his and mine. Sure, I added something to the mix. I mean, cats normally don’t maintain a Spring to-do list. 🙂 But I don’t think it was far from the truth either.

To me and our family, Tabs was larger than life. He was a celebrity to us, and he gave as good as he got. He loved the attention. He may not have been “posing for the camera,” per se, but he was posing for me.

Connor still remembers him and talks about him when she sees his pics. She knows he was her first animal friend, and I like that they have so many pictures together because of the blog. Hundreds if not thousands of pictures from the four years they had together before Tabs passed.

Rosie is our cat now and she’s our special feline family member, but I do miss the theatricality of life with Tabs. He was the perfect cat at the perfect time in my life, and I’ll always cherish it.

Thank you, buddy. Happy Easter, Tabs. Love and miss you always.

Karen

Hi, friend! I keep telling myself that sometime in the near future, I won’t be so tired. I’m hoping it’ll happen sooner than later, though! March has been a mother trucker of a month.

This week’s reading

  • Speaking of taking a trip down memory lane, did you ever wear any of these iconic scents from the early Aughts?
  • Ooh, now I want to try a few of these sunscreens!
  • If you’re looking for a new scent, here are 26 niche perfume brands to sniff this spring.
  • For my fellow friends who love rose notes!

I love this so much

I Think I’ve Outgrown Sephora

March 28th, 2024 by Karen 22 Comments

Once upon a time, this was my happy place

I never thought I’d say this, ever, but I’m not sure if I belong at Sephora anymore.

I went in last Saturday for a few staples (mascara, eyeliner and brow pencil) because I didn’t want to walk in the rain to Ulta, which is where I’ve been doing most of my beauty shopping in the last couple years.

Anywho, I walked in, found a few things at Rare Beauty, and then did a few laps around the store looking for something, anything, to move me. And that’s when I realized a lot of the things that I was used to seeing weren’t there.

The Clinique makeup display, for example, which was always a comforting sight, was gone. I mean, I know that Clinique isn’t cutting edge or anything, but I like that you can always find something there to satisfy a makeup urge, no matter what age you are. All their color products are pretty wearable and won’t leave you feeling heavily made up. They did have a handful of skin care products, though, but they were tucked away.

Then, in the skin care section, I realized the most prominently displayed items looked like they were geared toward teens and tweens. Brands that seem very popular on social media with kids, like Drunk Elephant, Glow Recipe, Sol de Janeiro and the Ordinary, were front and center.

That’s when I realized that I kinda sorta felt out of place.

It’s very different now compared to what it used to feel like stepping in the store in the late ’90s and early 2000s.

When Sephora was relatively new to the U.S. shopping there was an experience. There was nothing quite like it. I remember walking through and finding interesting things all over the store, and falling in love with lines that no longer live there, like Stila, Vincent Long, Paul & Joe, Du-Wop and Neil’s Yard.

Oh, and the makeup displays! They were all so neat and clean.

I used to go into the store feeling like it was a magical, special and chic place to find all my beauty treasures, but now between the countless neutral palettes across the influencer brands, the bottles of perfumed shackled to the shelves, the security officers flanking the front doors, and the chaotic state of the samples – which I don’t even want to put on the back of my hand now because they seem so gross and mismanaged – it doesn’t feel like a fun place to shop.

Anyway, maybe I’ll change my mind again in the future, and I’ll probably pop in there every once in a while out of sheer curiosity, but for now, I think I may have outgrown it.

Have you been shopped at Sephora lately? How was your experience?

Where Do You Do the Majority of Your Beauty Shopping?

March 26th, 2024 by Karen 16 Comments

If you need me, you can find me here…

These days, it’s Ulta. I used to be a die-hard Sephora gal, but lately I haven’t really been feeling it, especially when I go into the store (so gross). At Ulta, I can get hair, skin care and makeup in one place, and I feel like the brands they carry are a better fit for me right now in this stage of my beauty journey. Also, I like that the Ulta points system seems to give you more bang for your buck. Case in point: the time I used my Ulta points and a beauty deal of the day to get an $83 Murad serum for a mere $5.97.

How about you? Where do you do the majority of your beauty shopping?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 824

March 25th, 2024 by Karen 17 Comments

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. Palazzo pants or a poncho?

Palazzo pants, as long as their hemmed! Short girl problems, ya know.

2. What’s your birthday cake flavor of choice?

I usually like a white cake with vanilla frosting and berries! Or a red velvet cake, yum.

3. On a scale of one to 10, how nerdy are you?

A solid 6!

4. Twist-up or pencil liner?

Twist-up liner, please. Pencil liner I can do if I need to, but it’s messy.

5. Does it feel like spring yet where you live?

Definitely. It’s been sunnier lately, and in the 60s and 70s. All the trees are growing their leaves back and the flowers are blooming. It’s glorious!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy/paste with your answers in a comment. Talk to ya soon.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 805

March 24th, 2024 by Karen 1 Comment

Rosie’s been thinking… She always works so hard. It seems like there’s just so much to do. Between managing the company and keeping up with her experiments, there’s never enough time.

Life is short, though. This weekend she decided to pull back a bit and treat herself to some meow time.

Yup, it wasn’t easy for her. She felt kinda guilty not being productive at first, but then she got into it. 🤗

She started by watching three glorious hours of her new favorite show, Girls5Eva on Netflix.

After that, a nice hike outside and some bird watching…

Then, of course, tanning…

Rock climbing…

And an at-home spa treatment.

Ah…

Sometimes you gotta treat yourself. 😊

Saturday Check In | I Made a Wreath!

March 23rd, 2024 by Karen 14 Comments

I made a wreath!

Hello, my friend!

Can I just say, it’s so nice to be sitting at my keyboard in my PJs at the start of a Saturday? I haven’t spent much time writing this week because work has been draining lately. I come home feeling like my life force has been sucked out of me by a baby vampire, LOL! All I have left when I get home is just enough energy to make dinner and prep things for the next day, so I apologize if I’ve been MIA lately. I haven’t been feeling particularly creative or chatty. Just tired.

Question for you. Does the workload at your job ebb and flow? Or is the work more steady? I’m finding out that mine has these cycles where things will be very slow for a few weeks, and then just like that, it’ll pick up, and if I’m not on top of it, I get buried in details very quickly. If it wasn’t for my tracking spreadsheets, I’d be a mess.

The interesting thing to me is that the work isn’t technically hard. It’s very detail oriented, though, and having to concentrate for hours on making sure numbers and dates and copy are consistent across different programs takes a lot more out of me than I expected.

Anywho, things are still going well, and I like the work. Next month will be my fourth month there, and I’m finally starting to feel settled.

Earlier this week we had a team-building exercise making spring wreaths, and guess what? I found out that I kindasorta love making wreaths. I know, so random. I got to make a spring wreath out of fresh cuttings from trees and shrubs from the college farm, and I absolutely loved it.

I started by taking olive branches as my base and tying them together with green floral wire. Then, I clipped off the stiff parts of the stems with shears. Then, I just kept adding different branches to fill out the wreath. I used cherry blossoms, sage and rosemary.

I think what I liked most about the exercise was the process of trying different combinations of colors and leaves to see where the wreath would go. I think there’s something very freeing about not having a plan and letting the creativity flow!

When I brought it home, the first thing I did was put it on my door, and then I took about a jillion pictures of it.

If you ever get the chance to make a wreath, do it! You just might love it. 🙂

Other than being kinda buried at work and sneezing my way through my days (it’s allergy season for me in Nor Cal), I’ve been OK. How has life been on your end of the keyboard? Got any fun plans for the rest of today?

10 Things That Go Through Your Head When You’re Growing Out Your Bangs

March 20th, 2024 by Karen 8 Comments

Me and my bangs in happier times

I don’t know why, but when spring comes around, I get the sudden urge to chop my hair off. The need to get bangs is particularly strong in me right meow, LOL! May this post serve as a reminder to resist the urge.

  1. What possessed me to do this!? Why did I ever think that bangs would be a good idea? I’m never, EVER doing this ever again. (Side note: If I had a dime for every time I said that during this process I’d be a rich woman, LOL!)
  2. What the hell!? My leg hair, the hair on my big toe, my mustache, even MY CHIN — why does the hair grow so fast everywhere else EXCEPT for where I actually want it to grow??
  3. I should invest in a company that makes bobby pins, seeing as how I’m probably keeping the entire bobby pin industry in business. I walk around leaving a trail of bobby pins in my wake! I find them in the shower, the corners, the kitchen counter, my nightstand, and I may or may not have found a bunch around my feet in HIIT class at the gym.

I also may or may not have seriously considered picking one of them up and using it to put my bangs back.

  4. This freakin’ cowlick! How many cans of super extra hold hairspray will this take!?
  5. If I put on this cray-cray pair of false lashes, it’ll distract people from looking at my cowlick. Yeah, that seems perfectly logical…
  6. Good grief. I’ve only been growing out these bangs for five days, but it feels like FIVE YEARS.
  7. I feel like a shaggy sheep dog…
  8. I am starting to feel personally offended by my baby hairs, because they absolutely refuse to listen to me. RUDE.
  9. What should I do today to get these out of my face? Braid them? Twist them? Slick them back? Wear a headband? A hat? F*ck it. Maybe I’ll just wear that itchy blue wig I got from Party City, since that would be easier than dealing with these bangs.
  10. I’m never, ever, EVER getting bangs ever again.

Karen
