Last-Minute Halloween Costume Ideas: Crazy Cat Lady

October 25th, 2012 by Karen 36 Comments

crazy cat lady costume

Granted, I wear my crazy cat lady costume 365 days of the year, but for the purpose of a last-minute Halloween costume, I feel like I need to put in a little extra work to truly get the message across. 🙂

This costume draws inspiration from a crazy cat lady action figure I found a few years ago at the bookstore.

See, homegirl’s got the right idea. Why bother to put on real clothes when the cats just ruin ’em anyway? LOL!

To start, I grabbed my bathrobe and pinned a few stuffed cats on it. FYI, you need a minimum of three kitties, because the third cat is the gateway cat. It’s the crucial part of the puzzle that takes you from a mere “casual feline enthusiast” to full-blown CCL.

Then I put my hair up in rollers, put on some crazy, bright and glittery makeup…

On my eyes I’m wearing the 29 Purple Glitter Pencil from the new Sephora Jumbo Liner 12HR Wear Waterproof Set as an eyeshadow base and a mix of the purple and multi-colored glitter liners from the Sephora Collection Glitter Eyeliner Set as eyeshadow

On my cheeks I’m wearing the blush from the Too Faced Natural Radiance Face Palette, and on my lips that’s MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Outrageously Fun from the new Glamour Daze collection

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 242

October 22nd, 2012 by Karen 75 Comments

The One and Only Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll!

You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”

Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. Mood:
Thoughtful. Happy. I’m trying to appreciate the little things today. 🙂
  2. Cupcakes or cookies?
Oooh. Tough! I’m a firm believer in both, but right now I’m gonna have to go with cookies, especially semi-sweet chocolate chip cookies…

    I’ve been craving semi-sweet chocolate chips 24/7 lately. Mmm…

  3. Are you an outdoorsy person?
Only during regular business hours, haha. I like hiking and water sports (in particular, anything having to do with the beach, like surfing, swimming, stand-up paddle boarding and snorkeling), but I’m also part prissy princess; I can’t handle hardcore wilderness expeditions and overnight hikes.

I gotta have my creature comforts, ya know? I will go camping…if the camp has indoor plumbing, gets a cell phone signal and has beds that aren’t lying directly on the ground, LOL!

  4. A fragrance or scent that reminds you of your mom?
Dior Poison. She wore it a lot back when I was in high school. And Oil of Olay moisturizer, which is what she usually wears on her face. I catch a whiff whenever I give her a kiss on the cheek.
  5. Three things you like (non-makeup/beauty related):
    1) Driving up to a parking meter and finding leftover time on the clock.
    2) Tabs sleeping on the bed in the crook between my legs at night.
    3) Spaghetti squash.
  6. Three things you like (makeup/beauty related):
    1) Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation
    2) Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Serum
    3) Chanel Loose Powder
  7. It’s the last day of middle school. Will you sign my yearbook? 🙂
Of course! KIT (keep in touch), LYLARS (love ya like a real sis) and DBS (don’t be a stranger). See you next year! Class of 1989 rulez!
  8. Have you ever had an at-home hair coloring disaster?
Yeah…like every time I’ve ever tried to do it myself. It’s just one of those things I’ve never had much luck with. The color always either ends up way too dark, or patchy, or the bathroom walls and ceiling end up covered in hair dye. Thankfully, I’ve never accidentally given myself a bad chemical burn or been left with totally cray hair color.
  9. What are three things you’re happy about right now?
    1) My desk is uncluttered and clean (for once…but we’ll see how long that lasts).
    2) I have a job that lets me express my creativity.
    3) I have family living within driving distance.
  10. Weekly goals:
To get to bed by 10 every night (dare to dream!), to eat more protein (it’s trickier being a vegetarian), to go through the storage boxes in the dining room, to find a trustworthy painter in the area, and to start investigating fitness classes, because my workouts have been kinda uninspired lately.

Greetings and salutations, my friend! It’s another beautiful Monday — despite a little rain — and I feel lucky because I get to share my day with you. 🙂

Hmm… My tummy’s rumbling. How about a snack while you let me know how you’re doing in today’s Monday Poll? A croissant perhaps? Your pick — we have plain, Meyer lemon or chocolate (pick the lemon; it’s awesome!).

To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Le List

1. Mood:
2. Cupcakes or cookies?
3. Are you an outdoorsy person?
4. A fragrance or scent that reminds you of your mom?
5. Three things you like (non-makeup/beauty related):
6. Three things you like (makeup/beauty related):
7. It’s the last day of middle school. Will you sign my yearbook??
8. Have you ever had an at-home hair coloring disaster?
9. What are three things you’re happy about right now?
10. Weekly goals:

If you start feeling over-stressed or anxious this week, try to sneak away from whatever you’re doing for a few minutes. Change your point of view if you can, take a few deep breaths, grab a snack, and think about something that makes you happy, like playing with your dog/cat/best friend (your cat, only if he or she isn’t currently hating you, as in my case, LOL!).

Say it with me now, “I’m going to have a great week.” 🙂 I’ll be right back with your croissant.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 214

Tabs for the Tarte Vampire Cat Lip Tint in Type O Negative

Okay, so the writers of The Walking Dead are totally earning their keep so far this season. Fo’ reals! The show is in the midst of a third-season renaissance!

Sure, you have to like zombies and whatnot, but luckily, I do. 🙂

I got so fired up watching tonight’s episode that as soon as it was over I clicked over to amazon.com and started filling my cart with emergency supplies! — you know, just in case.

  1. Aquamira Water Treatment Drops 1oz – $10.83
  2. Fancy Feast Gourmet Cat Food, Grilled Seafood Variety Pack, 3-Ounce Cans (Pack of 24) – $13.68
  3. Mainstay Emergency Food Rations – 3600 Calorie Bars (Single) – $8.49
  4. Mountain House Freeze Dried Meals (Pack of 10) – $39.99
  5. Charmin Ultra Soft Toilet Tissue (40 Rolls) – $31.50
  6. Emergency Mylar Thermal Blankets (Pack of 10) – $8.57
  7. Ambient Weather WR-111A Emergency Solar Hand Crank AM/FM/NOAA Digital Radio, Flashlight, Cell Phone Charger – $41.87
  8. Emergency Fire Starter – $3.25
  9. Cyalume SnapLight Industrial Grade Chemical Light Sticks, Yellow, 6″ Long, 12 Hour Duration (Pack of 10) – $10.19
  10. 100 Feet of Rothco 550lb. Type III Nylon Paracord (in Pink) – $8.43
  11. SAS Survival Handbook, Revised Edition: For Any Climate, in Any Situation – $12.18
  12. UAG Limited Signature Series Tactical 10.5″ Black Stainless Steel Military Combat Grade Battle Axe Tomahawk Hunter Camping Survival Tool With Nylon Belt Sheath – $17.99
  13. Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination Sheath – $60.89
  14. First Aid Only Outdoor First Aid Kit, Soft Case, 205-Piece Kit – $21.75

LOL! But seriously, I should probably have some of these things around the house…and not just for zombies, but for any kind of emergency.

Do you have an emergency kit at home? If you do, what’s in it? Obviously, Tabs has one just for his personal supplies — kitty litter, cases of gravy and bags of dry food, spare feather toys, that kind of thing — but I feel like we should have one for the humans, too. 🙂

In other news, Tabs had a pretty busy week of kitty modeling. Lots going on in the world of feline fabulosity, and here are some of his latest pics…

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway
Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora

Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Soy Chai LatteI’m not the only person here at Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC./Makeup and Beauty Blog who suffers under the wrath of Tabs. El Hub is another long-suffering employee.

As chauffer, he had to go out this morning to pick up some dry cleaning (Tabs had a black-tie event the other night and spilled gravy all over his bow tie and cuffs), a bag of kitty litter (Tabs likes World’s Best) and a decaf pumpkin spice soy chai latte from Starbucks.

I figured that since El Hub was already gonna be going to Starbucks for Tabs…maybe he could bring one back for me. 🙂

And he did!

YUM! I just finished scraping the last bubbles of foam out of the cup with a spoon.

So good!

Now that I’m powered by pumpkins and caffeine, I feel ready to tackle my day. I need to get some groceries and want to stop by a paint store to get samples for the dining room. I’m still not 100% decided on Benjamin Moore’s Wythe Blue.

Saturdays aren’t just for running errands and doing your cat’s bidding, though. Around here, they’re also for giveaways, like this one here. Take a quick minute to enter this weekend’s giveaway for a $50 Sephora e-gift card.

Details down below…

What folks are saying…

“Hi Karen. Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I won! :O Thank you so much! You, Tabs, and your blog are amazing! Thank you for keeping me updated on all things beauty and more importantly, for keeping me entertained! Keep doing your thing! Thank you again.”
-Jacqueline

“Thanks so much, Karen. Just in case you were wondering what I got with it, I decided to go with the Clarisonic Mia–I’ve been wanting it for years now, but have never purchased it because of the price. Your eCard helped me finally buy it! I look forward to using it. Thanks again!”
-Jane

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. 🙂 I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.”
-Angel

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!”
-Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

“Never before have I been so pleased to check my email right before bed!!! Thank you so, so much! I truly enjoy your blog and check it almost daily! Thanks again! This made my night!”
-Melissa, Edmond, OK

-Hana

What Are You Wearing on Your Nails?

October 18th, 2012 by Karen 24 Comments

nicole by OPI Mer Maid For Each Other Swatch

I’ve got Nicole by OPI Mer-Maid For Each Other ($7) on my paws.

It’s a new shade for fall; I painted it on late last night when I otherwise should have been sleeping…

(That’s one of the things insomnia is good for — late-night at-home manicures.)

So I’m really diggin’ this duo-chrome effect. One minute it’s teal, and the next it looks green!

Pretty cool. 🙂

Nicole By OPI Mer-Maid For Each Other

I really wanted to show you what it looks like underwater, like when I’m washing my hands or doing the dishes, because I think it looks neat! — like a mermaid’s tail — but it was logistically challenging (holding the camera with one hand while the other was underwater)…

Share a Tip Tuesdays: Be a Beauty Jane Bond With Your Hot Hairdryer

October 16th, 2012 by Karen 31 Comments

Shoot, I use mine all the time to soften hard eyeliners, eyeshadow pencils and lip liners. I’ll set the dryer on its lowest setting, aim it right up close at the tip of the pencil, and hold it there about 30 seconds…

BAM! Smooth, creamy (melted) liner that applies like pastel paint.

It’s pretty hard to over-melt most makeup products, but you do have to be a little cautious about the temperature of the products you use this trick with before they touch the sensitive skin on your face. I always temp test them first on the back of my hand, just a tiny amount, to make sure they’re not too hot!

Welcome to another fact- and fun-filled installment of Share a Tip Tuesdays! 🙂 Thanks for the fabulous money-saving eye makeup tips you left in the comments on last week’s edition. Here are/were some of my favorites from last week…

I love Wet N Wild shadows and the little Sally Girl ones from Sally Beauty. They’re both super cheap but still good quality, so they’re a great way to test out a color that you may or may not like before dropping the big bucks on a high end brand.
–ESTHER

I love the MAC 239, Sigma E25, and my Sonika Kashuk bent eyeliner brush — can’t live without ‘em! As far as shadows, I think I take my Naked (or Naked 2!) palette every time I travel somewhere — can cover anything from day to night! As far as cost friendly shadows I love WnW’s Comfort Zone Palette and Maybelline’s color tattoos.
–MELISSA

I just tried Rimmel London’s Glam Eyes HD eyeshadow palette — the one that looks like the Union Jack — in English Rose. I haven’t tried any other Glam Eyes color combos and I’ve never tried any of Rimmel’s eyeshadow quads or singles so I can’t speak for their eye shadows in general, but the Glam Eyes HD is like BUTTER! I mean, it’s got a texture like Shu’s ME-silver — fantastic. The color payoff is great and the staying power is all day with a good primer, with no “muddying” of the colors. Definitely worth a try.
–JCZ

I mostly use synthetic brushes because animal fur ones make my skin itch. I love the CVS Essence of Beauty crease brushes (I own a couple sets). My favorite blending brush is an ELF brush I got on clearance at Target, and it’s covered in purple plastic gems, lol.
–CHELSEA

Absolute favorite eyeshadow: wet n wild 8 pan palette in comfort zone. no matter what the occasion is, these dont disappoint. can go from day to night. can be subtle or bold, wether you have a zillion fancy brushes to apply or just use their applicator — it turns out beautifully!
–YELENA

My fav shadow is Maybelline Color Tattoo. I only have one (Tough as taupe) but I WILL have these jewel toned LE colors: “Fuchsia Fever” (deep fuchsia), “Ready, Set, Green” (medium jade green), “Blue on By” (bright royal blue), and “Test my Teal” (darkened blue-green). I swear they look like the powder shadows MAC did with Eve. I mean a cream version of Bang on Blue? Gimme!
–TANIA

Merci beaucoup! 🙂

Now, since eyes got our love last week, let’s see what we can come up with for lips! Here are a few topical ideas, but feel free to improvise (with beauty tips, one can never have too many)…

  1. Do you know of any drugstore or otherwise bargain lip products that look more expensive than they are?
  2. What are your everyday lipstick, gloss and/or liner workhorses (the products you turn to the most)?
  3. What’s the one lip product you’ve recommended more than any other in your life?
  4. Your top five lip products of all time?
  5. Do you have any unorthodox application tips or techniques (things that most people may not know about or do)?

You can either leave your tips/tricks/suggestions here in the comments, or tweet ’em to me on Twitter @karenmbb using the hashtag #shareatiptuesday.

Karen

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 241

October 15th, 2012 by Karen 97 Comments

The One and Only Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll!
Follow your dreams (says the breaded cat on the side of this box of mints)

You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”

Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.

  1. Mood:
Ya know, I’m actually doing pretty good. I made a little progress on the home front over the weekend (more on that in a sec), so that gets a big sigh of relief, ahhhh.
  2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ’em from head to toe?
You bet I would! Let’s do this mo’ fo’! As far as I’m concerned, the more sequins, the better. 🙂 Assuming I’m also wearing a fierce pair of shoes, because the footwear must be worthy of the outfit; otherwise, I see no point in said bedazzlement.
  3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
I wish I knew the real story of how my parents met. Every time I’ve ever asked my mom, she’s given me some vague answer about how they met in college…

And? And what, Mom? How did you meet? Where did you meet? What was your first date like?

Of course, since I can never get a straight answer out of her, my overactive imagination concocts something soapy and scandalous.

Hmm… On second thought, maybe I don’t want to know, LOL!

  4. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
If I could, I’d fill my plastic pumpkin with Mini Snickers, pink Mentos (just the pink ones), popcorn-flavored Jelly Belly beans, peanut M&M’s (with Tabs’ picture printed on them, of course), Sour Patch Kids and Twix.

And I’d leave out the Smarties (blech!), Swedish Fish, licorice and Tootsie Rolls. Thank you! 🙂

  5. Who’s the last person spoke with on the phone?
Mi madre! She’s trying to get me to go wine tasting with her, of all things…
  6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which magazine would it be?
Um…Cat Fancy? Please don’t judge, LOL!
  7. Unicorn or pegasus?
Ooh! — that’s a toughie. With the pegasus, you get free air travel, but I bet there’s a lot of upkeep involved caring for the wings.

Plus, where do you park a pegasus? It’s not like they have special pegasus parking at Trader Joe’s, and do you have to land and take off from an airport?

I guess I’d probably go with the unicorn… They are able to teleport once a day, and that’s pretty handy.

  8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?
The shortest was an awful cropped cut back in the sixth grade (not my idea, btw! When I grew boobs, my parents suddenly decided I needed a boy haircut).

The longest I’ve ever had it was in high school, and it hung all the way down to my bum.

  9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
I like to take a long, hot shower, make myself a cup of tea, and if I’m hungry, have a yummy meal with veggies and fresh bread or pasta. Then, a movie on Netflix, a good book, and/or an at-home mani/pedi.
  10. Weekly goals:
One thing at a time. That’s my only goal, really — that I focus on one thing at a time. If I can do that, then I know I can get through my the most important things on my long to-do list.

Hey, sweet friend. How YOU doing?! Did you have a good weekend?

Mine was pretty good.. Actually, really good. I got in some hard-core relaxing (I know that sounds funny…), and like I mentioned a minute ago, made some progress on a home project, meaning that I actually got out and looked at dining room tables.

I think I’m this close to finally pulling the trigger on a honey-colored mango wood one from Crate and Barrel. It’s just a basic rectangular table. No flourish at all, which is what I want.

I also stopped by Home Depot to get some paint swatches because I’m thinking about painting the dining room. It’s sort of an eggshell white right now, as are all the walls, but I’m thinking about different shades of light blue.

If you happen to have a good eye for interior design, I have a question for you. Does the size of the room have any bearing on the size of table you should get? How much space should you leave around the table, between the table and the walls?

I can’t figure out if I should get a smaller or a larger table. I’m drawn to a larger one because I could use it as a work space for projects, but it would take up most of the room…

Hmm… While I continue pondering this question of profound global importance (not), do you have a minute to fill out this week’s Monday poll? I hope so. I’d love to hear from you. 🙂

To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Le List

1. Mood:
2. How many sequins is too many? Would you wear ’em from head to toe?
3. Are there any stories or details you wish you knew about your parents or guardians?
4. Who’s the last person you spoke with on the phone?
5. What are your most and least favorite Halloween sweets?
6. If you could be on the cover of any magazine, which would it be?
7. Unicorn or pegasus?
8. What’s the shortest/longest you’ve ever had your hair?
9. What do you do to relax after a stressful day?
10. Weekly goals:

Have a great week, okay? And I’ll try to do the same. 🙂

Karen

Tabs for the Betsey Johnson Cat Backpack

The zombies are back!Ooh! I watched the season premiere of The Walking Dead tonight with Tabs, and it was…interesting.

Tabs and I shared a big tub of microwave popcorn, and I took notes during the show while he barked out orders like, “Mrrow.” [Look into getting us a dirt bike for quick escapes, and get straps to attach a cat carrier.]

Tabs actually loves zombie movies, shows and literature. He’s read more than 100 zombie books, something he refers to as “research,” and he takes his zombie apocalypse preparations very seriously. For instance, he has stockpiles of gravy that even I don’t know about, and he’s drafted elaborate emergency plans.

In the event of a zombie outbreak, I am to report to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) at Makeup and Beauty Blog headquarters, where I will be responsible for opening the cans of gravy, thanks to my time-tested opposable thumbs.

Tabs says that in the zombie books he’s read, cats rarely play a major role, but he attributes this to feline self-sufficiency. See, cats don’t stick around when the sh*t hits the fan. No way. They turn tail and run!

Still, he hopes the day never comes, though, because it would result in a serious drop in worldwide gravy production. 🙂

In other news, this was a pretty busy week for Tabs, irrespective of zombies. He had kitty modeling jobs for a number of big beauty brands. I don’t know if you’re into that kind of thing (kitty supermodeling), but if you are, here are the highlights from this week’s campaigns…
