Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 223

June 4th, 2012 by Karen 60 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
In a word, great! I actually feel well-rested this morning, like a whole new person. This past weekend I was really able to spend some time “filling my well” and recharging my batteries, by hanging out with friends, seeing a movie and catching up on some reading.

It also helps TREMENDOUSLY that that I’ve been sleeping a little better than usual over the past few days. I got in 10 glorious hours Saturday night, and hark! — the herald angels were singing!

  2. Have you ever attended a music festival?
Small ones, yes, but not none of the really big or famous ones. Some of the local radio stations organize small ones in Golden Gate Park, and I’ve been to a few of those.

I love music, but I’m not a big concert goer. I’m just not into huge crowds…or Porta-Potties.

I do enjoy watching concerts on my TV from the comfort of my living room couch, though. 🙂 I can sit down, take bathroom breaks whenever I need to, and can even pause the show to take Tabs out for a walk, LOL!

  3. What’s a fantastically great hair day like for you?
Ah, an elusive creature… On my best hair days, my side-swept bangs lay perfectly flat. Sometimes they like to puff out in odd places, so there’s none of that. And my shoulder-length waves can best be described as “beachy.” Voluminous, but not messy.
  4. Describe a perfect date for you:
I’m easy. I love taking day trips up to Napa with El Hub, so a perfect date would involve us driving up early on a Sunday morning. We’d get in a little sightseeing, have lunch and then stop by a winery or two for tastings.

Later, on the way home, we’d pick up some fresh fruit from one of the local stands, add a loaf of French bread and a block of cheese, and then watch Mad Men and Game of Thrones before going to bed early, LOL!

Yup, this is what happens when you’ve been together for 10 years…

  5. When were you first allowed to wear perfume?
High school. I never really had any interest in it before that, but by the time freshman year rolled around, I was all about Cover Girl Navy and and Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth.

A bunch of my friends were also into Liz Claiborne…but it always gave me a headache.

  6. What are some of your favorite summer snacks?
OOH! Fresh fruit — watermelon, strawberries, cherries, peaches, plums, apricots… I love fruit.
  7. An activity you’d like to try?
Even though the thought of having sweaty strangers up in my grill freaks me out, I still think I’d like to try taking a martial arts class with El Hub.

We keep meaning to visit the Brazilian jiujitsu studio up here, but our work schedules just haven’t been aligning with the stars.

  8. What’s one thing every woman should have?
I think every woman should have a place they can call their own, be it a bench on the patio, a home office, or even just a small corner in the living room or a bedroom. Just a little space that’s all yours, just for you.

The idea of a physical space as a sanctuary is very important for me.

  9. If you have any pets, what can you tell me about them?
I have one chubby, 18-pound black/brown tabby cat named Tabs with perfectly ordinary tabby features (meaning, he’s gorgeous), and he’s been not-so-quietly dominating my life since 2007.

El Hub and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

  10. Weekly goals:
To be kind to myself, to step away from the computer every night by 7 p.m. (or so), and to enjoy my birthday on the 9th.

Hello, friend. I hope you’re having a lovely Monday so far. Do you have a minute to touch base with this week’s Monday Poll?

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. Have you ever attended a music festival?
3. What’s a fantastically great hair day like for you?
4. Describe a perfect date for you:
5. When were you first allowed to wear perfume?
6. What are some of your favorite summer snacks?
7. An activity you’d like to try?
8. What’s one thing every woman should have?
9. What can you tell me about your pets (if you have any)?
10. Weekly goals:

I can’t wait to catch up with you. Today marks the first official week of June. What do ya say we get the month kicked off to a good start? 🙂

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 194

Tabs for LUSH Filthy Catnip Cat Shampoo

Can’t say I agreed with the Tomatometer this time. The critics gave Snow White and the Huntsman a pretty low score (46%), but I thought it was great!

Charlize tore it up as the evil queen (was that Benefit she was wearing?). She really gave that character some teeth. Fangs even! And claws.

And Kristen Stewart brooded well…and furrowed her brows, which she tends to do a lot, but I guess that’s what happens when you spend all of your time with vampires, werewolves, witches and trolls.

We just got home a little while ago. I was hoping Tabs would have dinner hot and ready, since he stayed home, but of course he didn’t. He didn’t want to go to the movie because it doesn’t star any cats, and he’d heard ahead of time that the filmmakers were auditioning for a bunch of different animals. Just no cats. So he stayed home in silent protest.

Typical.

I tried to remind him about how popular cats are on YouTube (hello? Maru?), but he just brushed me off and went back to updating his kitty modeling portfolio.

This was good week for Tabs. He had modeling jobs with LUSH, NYX, Bliss, Too Faced and MAC.

Here’s the quick highlight reel… 🙂

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

The following is an excerpt from an interview that did not appear in Cat Fancy magazine:

I can’t take all the credit, but yeah, I think I was the first person to use the term, “cat aquariums,” this way.

Before that, they were just regular fish aquariums for cats, ya know, to give them something interesting to look at, but then I came with the idea of building really big aquariums filled with cats for crazy cat ladies like me.

This one here is our bestseller. It’s called the Tabby 2000. It’s a 2,000-cubic-foot, lightweight plexiglass enclosure, complete with AstroTurf flooring, a 60-foot-long cat run and dual-cedar climbing trees for $390 (cats not included).

Very popular at birthday parties and farmers’ markets this year…

Oh, that one? That one over there is our portable model, the Micro-Mau. It’s designed for home use. As you can see, it’s about the size of a phone booth. Same AstroTurf flooring, a single cedar climbing tree with seven levels and a perch on top. Perfect for households with one or two cats.

If you’re interested, I can give you a great deal on a floor model. 🙂

Rise and shine, pal o’ mine. Good morning!

Hope all is well on your end of the keyboard. No complaints from here. I slept in a little, and now I’m just fooling around online (as you can see).

I had so much fun with the girls in the city yesterday. I got a nice medium-pressure massage at Bliss (turned out I wasn’t in the mood for deep-tissue) and then tea and yummy food at Samovar.

Not sure what I’m gonna do today. I cleaned the house yesterday before leaving, so I did most of my chores. I might try to go see Snow White and the Huntsman, but it’s such a nice day outside; I’d rather not spend it indoors.

We’ll see. Right now I’m going to take Tabs out for a quick walk. Be back soon. 🙂

A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway
Comment to win a Sephora eGift card

Morning! 🙂 Please, come in. How sweet of you to stop by on my last official Saturday as a 36-year-old.

Got a pre-birthday celebration lined up with my friends Jen and Cindy today. Hard to believe they were also at my 16th birthday party…which was 20 years ago!

We’re spending the day in San Francisco together, first with drinks at the W Hotel, and then with some pampering at the Bliss Spa (located in the W).

I CANNOT WAIT! I could really use a massage. My back has more knots in it than a bad macramé project, I kid you knot. Time to get tenderized like a hunk o’ meat!

After that, it’s over to the Samovar Tea Lounge for tea and noms.

Should be a great day. I don’t get to see Jen and Cindy nearly enough. We’re all so busy now.

Got my iPhone all charged up, and Tabs will be on call here managing the blog.

Have a great day today, and good luck in this weekend’s giveaway. Talk to you soon.

What folks are saying…

“Thanks so much, Karen. Just in case you were wondering what I got with it, I decided to go with the Clarisonic Mia–I’ve been wanting it for years now, but have never purchased it because of the price. Your eCard helped me finally buy it! I look forward to using it. Thanks again!”
-Jane

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. 🙂 I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.”
-Angel

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!”
-Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

“Never before have I been so pleased to check my email right before bed!!! Thank you so, so much! I truly enjoy your blog and check it almost daily! Thanks again! This made my night!”
-Melissa, Edmond, OK

“Hi Karen. Oh my goodness! I can’t believe I won! :O Thank you so much! You, Tabs, and your blog are amazing! Thank you for keeping me updated on all things beauty and more importantly, for keeping me entertained! Keep doing your thing! 🙂 Thank you again.”
-Jacqueline

“Hi Karen. Thank you so much, I’m so excited, I’ve never won anything before. My name is Hana … I just turned 25 (today is my birthday!) Yay! Thank you.”
-Hana

Charlize Theron: Her Best Hair?

May 29th, 2012 by Karen 13 Comments

Charlize Theron: Her Best Hair?

For someone so down to earth, South Africa-born Charlize Theron (born August 7, 1975) will be spending a lot of time in space this year. The Oscar winning actress plays a beautiful bureaucrat, a secretive suit who works for the nefarious company aboard the spaceship Prometheus in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien prequel.

But before the ship takes off on June 8, she has to contend with Snow White and her handsome huntsman first in Snow White and the Huntsman, opening June 1. In the dark retelling of the famous fairy tale, which also stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth as Thor the huntsman, Charlize plays the magic-mirror-consulting evil queen, who this time around doesn’t have to pull her punches for a G-rated audience.

So she’s got these two certain blockbuster movies that are gonna be in theaters at the exact same time, but that’s not all the Oscar winner’s been up to. Charlize is also a new mom, having recently adopted a baby boy named Jackson.

Now that’s a busy spring. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look anything less than completely put together…except for maybe her character in Monster, but that was on purpose, LOL!

Which of Charlize's hairstyles do you like best?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 222

May 28th, 2012 by Karen 63 Comments

the makeup and beauty blog monday poll

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past four years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
Maybe it’s because the tea hasn’t quite kicked yet, but I’m feeling really mellow. I wanted to get a lot done today, but I think a chill day might be in order.
  2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?
I’d go with the poncho, ya know, for practical reasons. Maybe I could use it as a blanket or a table cloth in an emergency.

And I have a feeling the furry purple vest would make me look/feel like a Muppet.

  3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door?
Pretend it’s late in the day. You’ve removed your makeup, your contacts, warmed up a Lean Cuisine, and now you’re sitting on the couch in stretchy pants and watching reruns of [INSERT YOUR FAVORITE SYNDICATED TV SHOW].

Just then, the phone rings. It’s your friend, calling with a last-minute invite to a fancy dinner soiree, and it’s an offer you simply can’t refuse.

How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door? For me, about 20 minutes — but only if I’m having a decent hair day, and I pick an outfit that doesn’t need to be ironed.

  4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?
During the week, about 7. I usually climb in bed around 10:30 and read until I get sleepy, usually around 11. On weekends, I like to sleep in, so maybe 8-10 hours of sleep (sometimes 12 if I’m really lucky and Tabs is feeling generous).
  5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?
Okay, sweetie, if you’re reading this, you know I love you, but how do you manage to always step on my feet or kick my legs whenever we sit across from each other at a table (and I know you’re not getting fresh with me)?

It’s like preordained! Every. Single. Time. The worst is when I’m wearing sandals.

  6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor?
Oh, yes. More than once. 🙂
  7. What’s the last book you finished?
Tina Fey’s Bossypants, and I LOL’d about a hundred times reading it, too. Highly recommended!
  8. What’s the plan for today?
Today is a holiday called Memorial Day here in the U.S., so many of my compatriots have the day off from work. I really wanted to go to the pool in our condo complex (it finally opened for the summer, yay!), but it’s overcast and chilly outside, so that’s not gonna happen.

If I finish the tasks Tabs put on my to-do list, I might try to go to a movie. We’ll see… There’s really not a lot in theaters that I still want to see, but next week things start getting good. First, Snow White and the Huntsman comes out, and then Prometheus the week after that.

  9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid?
Both of my parents worked long hours, so they were always pretty tired when they got home. Consequently, my brother and I spent a lot of time with our defacto babysitter/primary means of entertainment, Mr. TV.

That thing was practically on 24/7! I watched a lot of Punky Brewster, Silver Spoons (I had the biggest crush on Ricky Schroder), The Cosby Show, Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters, Double Trouble, Mr. Belvedere, Who’s the Boss (“Ahn-juh-luhr!”), The Golden Girls, The Love Boat…

Yeah, I watched a lot of TV.

  10. Weekly goals:
Just one this week. I gotta get back to exercising regularly. Ever since I started getting up earlier in the day, I’ve been getting more blogging and other stuff done, but my workouts have been suffering. I’ve been telling myself/trying to exercise in the late afternoon, but I’m usually pretty tired by then.

Years ago I would always exercise in the evenings, but now it’s like pulling teeth. I don’t know… I’ve done it before, so I can do it again.

Howdy, friend. 🙂 Happy Memorial Day.

What have you been up to? Any picnics or parties this weekend? Our little circle had its annual Memorial Day cookout yesterday, but El Hub and I drove up to Napa for the day, so we missed it.

Napa was a lot of fun, though. I’ll put up some pics in a few.

But first, the Monday Poll.

If you had to work today, I hope it’s a good one, whether that means it’s busy or slow. If, on the other hand, you had the day off, well, enjoy it. Do something fun. Downtime is very important.

If you decided to fill out the poll, tell me how things are going at the bottom of your comment.

Talk to you soon.

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. If you had to choose between an oversized, multi-colored knitted poncho (with fringe!) or a faux fur purple vest to wear for a day, which one would you go with and why?
3. How quickly can you get dressed, ready and out the door?
4. How many hours of sleep do you get each night?
5. Does your significant other do anything that drives you crazy?
6. Have you ever battled someone on the dance floor?
7. What’s the last book you finished?
8. What’s the plan for today?
9. What were your favorite TV shows when you were a kid?
10. Weekly goals:

Have a marvelous Monday and a great start to your week. It’s almost summer, and things are looking up. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Tabs for Buxom Big Tabby Mascara

Saint Tabby de la LoireNext time you go to Trader Joe’s and find yourself in the wine aisle, look for a bottle of Saint Tabby de la Loire. Trust me on this. If you like cats and white wine, you’ll love Saint Tabby de la Loire.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have to point out that Tabs owns a controlling stake in the winery, which is in Yountville, in Napa County, California.

If you’re ever out this way, you should totally go!

Let me tell you, the grounds are breathtaking. Tall cedars line the long driveway that leads to a huge Tuscan estate atop a hill that overlooks the vineyard. Row upon row of red and white grape vines, a huge tasting room, and the whole place caters to cats and cat ladies.

Well…cats mostly just like to explore the vineyard, which is stocked with imported mice from France, while cat ladies partake of the wine and play with the kitties.

As for the wine itself, c’est magnifique! Sweet and smooth, like the owner himself.

When he isn’t inspecting the vineyard at Saint Tabby de la Loire, Tabs is busy padding his kitty modeling portfolio and growing his fashion and media empires (Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC.).

Here are the latest pics from his portfolio this week… 🙂

Tut-tut, sailor! Time to swab the deck, etc. our starboard bow! And haul in the sails and whatnot, and so forth!

Yeah…I don’t know a lot about sailing. 🙂

Rise and shine, morning glory! I hope you’re having a good weekend so far.

I’m quite proud of myself. I did a lot of much-needed housecleaning yesterday, and I’m starting to feel better about the condition of the house. Still have an unfurnished dining room filled with cardboard boxes from the move here three years ago, but every little bit helps (keep me from completely losing my sh*t).

I’m not sure what’s on my agenda today… Maybe a drive up to wine country around lunchtime, just to get out of Dodge for a while.

What have you been up to? I hope there’s been some room for fun.
