The Breast Cancer Awareness Month Sign Project and Giveaway: Thank You and Congratulations

November 16th, 2011 by Karen 16 Comments

You made hand-drawn support signs, signs made from string, signs on sticky notes and even signs made with makeup!

You guys did it again, making the second year in The Breast Cancer Awareness Month Sign Project and Giveaway a big success, and even though the words, “thank you,” don’t seem like enough, I do thank you. Thank you for putting yourself out there last month in support of breast cancer awareness.

Every morning I’d get up, waddle over to my computer, and pull up my email to find your lovely smiles lighting up my screen. Your children, grandchildren, friends and beloved pets even made appearances, too.

The winner of this year’s giveaway, Patti, with her grandson and her sign

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Nov. 14

November 14th, 2011 by Karen 141 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 194. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Distracted but otherwise a-okay. The roofers are here doing repairs on our garage (I’m waving at them right now through my office window… “Hi, guys!”), and there’s quite a commotion.

  3. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
  4. It varies wildly. Anywhere from 2-15 minutes, depending on how cooperative Lloyd Christmas is being (my bangs) and what I’m trying to do with my wavy hair.

If all goes well, then it takes me about five minutes to de-frizz and shape, unless I’m curling or flat ironing, in which case I’m looking at about 15.

And if I just can’t cajole Lloyd and the waves (great name for a band!) into behaving, I’ll slip on a Goody headband and a ponytail holder and call it a day.

Even though I miss having super long hair…I have to say that shorter hair sure has been easier to wear.

  5. Do you have any plans for the holidays?
  6. Not yet, nope. And to tell you the truth, I’m beginning to fret about it.

Now that El Hub’s parents have moved to California from Hawaii (they’re about a four-hour drive away from us), things are a little more complicated.

When they lived in Hawaii, visits were more cut and dry. We either went to Hawaii or stayed here in the Bay Area, but now with everyone within driving distance, both sides of the family will try to get together, or we’ll be driving back/forth.

I’m thankful that we’re all much closer together, but I haven’t quite figured out the new logistical challenges.

  7. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week?
  8. Last week I got a $20 voucher for 20 classes at a local yoga studio (I found the deal on Living Social), and I’d really like to make it to at least one class this week.

  9. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?”
  10. Pie! 🙂 Pumpkin, apple, pecan…

  11. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
  12. I recently rediscovered Tarte Provocateur Pressed Mineral Powder after a long hiatus. Why I ever stopped using it, I have no idea.

It refuses to settle into my fine lines and pores and feels as light as air on my skin. Amazing stuff!

  13. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?
  14. Oh, yes. French, Italian and Spanish, mainly because I would like to eat my way through Spain, Italy and France.

  15. Shave, pluck or wax?
  16. When I’m in a hurry, shaving AND plucking, and waxing when I have an extra hour to kill (I do it myself).

  17. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
  18. Meet and then maintain my weight-loss goal despite the good eats this time of year, re-organize my entire makeup collection, and plan to take a short trip some place warm in January.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. Just one this week. I feel a little off kilter right now, so I just want to make it through the week in one (ideally happy) piece.

Hey, hey, cutie pie. 🙂 I just realized that following today, we only have six Mondays left in 2011.

I know! We’re in single digit territory…

We’re also coming up on our fifth year together, since I started MBB back in February of 2007.

This may sound corny, but I’m always grateful to be able to start the week with your friendship. I’m not kidding. Without you I’d probably go full-on bat sh*t crazy.

Before you jet, do you have a minute to touch base in today’s Monday Poll? I hope you do.

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. How long does it take you to do your hair in the morning?
3. Do you have any plans for the holidays?
4. What’s one new thing you would like to try this week?
5. The first word that comes to mind when I ask, “What’s one thing you love about fall?”
6. A piece of makeup you’ve been loving lately?
7. Do you wish that you could speak any other languages?
8. Shave, pluck or wax?
9. Things you’d like to do before the end of the year?
10. Weekly goals:

I think today’s going to take a turn for the better any minute now. It’s just a matter of time.

You have yourself a good one, okay? Talk to you soon.

Karen

Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 165

Tabs for Make Up For Ever Wild and Chic

Earlier today I saw famed runway coach Miss J. Alexander on an episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta show a group of aspiring models how to walk, and it totally reminded me of Tabs.

A lot of people don’t know this…but it was actually Tabs who showed Miss J. how to walk (years before America’s Next Top Model).

Tabs had a few big kitty modeling jobs this last week for Make Up For Ever, Tarte, Bobbi Brown, Anastasia and MAC, but things have started to slow down for the holidays. It happens every year, and it’s nice because it means a little less traveling for Tabs.

If you’re interested, here are the latest pics from his portfolio. He hopes you enjoy. 🙂

What Are You Wearing on Your Nails?

November 13th, 2011 by Karen 44 Comments

I felt like doing something a little different and festive with my nails this weekend, so I tried a glittery ombre mani using a base of bright Lancôme Mini Les Vernis lacquer in Shade 102 ($15), topped with glittery China Glaze Twinkle Lights ($6).

I only did my tips, so my toes are currently bare and, I might add, resemble monkey feet, LOL! 🙂

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

Isn’t it funny how sometimes when you go shopping, you go in for one thing and end up leaving with something completely different? Well, my pants have been fitting me kinda strangely lately (I’ve been running a lot), and since it isn’t cool to have your bum accidentally fall out of your jeans, I went to the mall yesterday afternoon to get a couple of new pairs from Old Navy.

And I figured that since Sephora is right across the street, I might as well pop in. Next thing you know, I’m at the NARS blush display swatching for like 45 minutes (WHEE!)…

Sephora V.I.B. Haul: NARS blushes and hair essentials from Bumble & Bumble and Phyto

…and then I’m at Marshalls trying on tops.

The yellow Michael Stars tee on the left was marked down from $59 to $12.99!

And since Petco was next door, of course I had to check out their rescue kittens (of course).

Much to Tabs’ relief, though, none of them came home with me.

You better believe I’m not sharing my gravy…

All in all, it was a successful Saturday shopping experience, except that I didn’t find any pants! 🙂

In other news, have you ever wondered what happens to lipsticks that get lost and disappear? Like where they go?

Check it — I finally found the answer…

They’re consumed by a creature called the Lipstick Monster!

Lancome Golden Hat Mini Le Vernis in Shade 102LANCÔME MUST HAVE RED THE BOOK ON CLASSIC COLOR AND SHINE
BEFORE CREATING MINI LES VERNIS IN SHADE 102

Somewhere out there is a bottle of Lancôme’s Mini Le Vernis in Shade 102 looking for a new nail to call home. One of five nail lacquers in the new Lancôme The Golden Hat Foundation Holiday 2011 Collection, it’s a true red-lovers dream, with a creamy finish that matches L’Absolu Rouge Lipcolor in Caprice to a T.

One coat delivers rich, opaque coverage and Swarovski-like shine, and if that wasn’t enough, the brush is just the right width, with firm bristles that don’t splay, making the brush easy to control. Read more…

Tarte Glossed Over PureOptic LipglossTHE SHEER, SHINY GLOSSES IN THE NEW GLOSSED OVER
PUREOPTIC LIPGLOSS COLLECTION ARE A WORK OF TARTE

Rich holiday reds are so much fun, but sometimes I wanna get low…maintenance with my lip color.

On days like that, I like sets like these. The eight glosses in Tarte’s new $29 limited edition Glossed Over PureOptic Lipgloss Collection make sheer, shiny lip looks as easy as 1-2-3.

Available exclusively at QVC.com, the set includes eight 0.04-oz. travel-size PureOptic Glosses (the full-size 0.14-oz. ones cost $21 each) in Nectar, Nude, Pink Blush, Coral, Warm Pink, Nude Pink, Mauve and Berry.

Ironically, Tarte describes these as pigmented and rich on their website, but on my lips, all eight shades? Not so vivid. Even the brightest one here, Coral, looks rather sheer to me, and increasingly so as I smack my lips a few times. Read more…

WEARING DEBORAH LIPPMANN’S HOLIDAY 2011 COLLECTION

Not even strobe lights could compete with the glare from the glitterific shades in Deborah Lippmann’s latest collection of nail lacquers. I hope you’re ready to pump up the jam, love, because this disco ball’s droppin’, haaay! It’s time to hit the dance floor with Deborah’s holiday collection.

This ode to sparkle and shine, available now, contains six separate nail polishes, four limited edition and two permanent shades ($16-18 each), and the $42 three-piece Get This Party Started set (with full-size bottles).

Today my nails took four of the individual polishes and the entire Get This Party Started set out for a joy ride. With their fun flecks of glitter and rich metallic finishes, these colors are just begging to be worn on a dance floor. Read more…

SWEET CHEEKS THAT NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE

It was a dark and stormy night…

Wait — no it wasn’t. Not even close. It was actually a Lost Weekend earlier this fall, and matte Becca Mineral Blush in Wild Honey ($32) was there.

The sweet cheeks this pigmented peachy nude powder blush creates are always in style, but they feel like they hail from a kinder, gentler time, a time when afternoons meant studying at the library after school, and your cheeks would flush at a smile from your crush or a single word like, “Hi.” Read more…

Indecisiveness doesn’t go well with Tarte’s new holiday kit. Nope, the $48 Puttin’ on the Glitz kit comes with three interchangeable palettes, but you can only fit one of them in the cute silver clutch at a time.

Hmm…

Being a fiend for accessories, my pulse jumped when I heard about this clever limited edition cutie and its 18 powder eyeshadows, highlighter, bronzer and lipgloss. To make it easier to tote the products around (but not all at the same time), Tarte included the clutch, which incorporates a mirror for touch-ups and slots for bills and credit cards. There’s also a tutorial booklet with pretty helpful directions for three different looks. Read more…

To dip or not to dip — that is the question. Whether ’tis nobler on the lips to suffer the slings and arrows of bacterial infection, or to take arms against a tin that contains the tastiest glosses I’ve worn in a really long time…

Even though I’d prefer tubes to a tin, my taste buds are like, “We don’t care!” The new glosses in the Juicy Couture Troy Surratt Lip Gloss Set, a collaboration between Juicy Couture and celebrity makeup artist Troy Surratt (whose resume reads like my iTunes workout playlist, and includes the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Fergie and Janet Jackson), smell and taste just like my movie theater Achilles’ heel…

IN MY SUBURBAN SIGHTS

My inner urban girl, the one who after 10 years living in the surburbs still tells herself that “it’s only temporary,” loves that Anastasia gives a shout-out to city girls with the name of her $39 Bright Eyes, Big City Brow & Eye Collection kit.

The kit, one of four available now from Anastasia for the holidays, comes with a nice array of eye and brow products put together to create natural, wide-eyed looks.

Anastasia’s known for bodacious brow products, and they’re my favorite pieces in this kit. With the brow/eye powders, gel, tweezers and mini brow brush, perfect brows are just a minute or two away. Read more…

5 Ways to Winterize Your SkinSKINCARE FOR THE CHANGING SEASONS
5 WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR SKIN

I ticked off the tabby the other day when I had to cut short our regular morning walk. There was a chill in the air that I just couldn’t shake — certainly not in the sweatshirt, jeans and flip-flops I’d gotten used to wearing on our little jaunts — and even though the first official day of winter doesn’t arrive for more than a month, Jack Frost was already nipping at my toes.

From here on out, at least for the next few months, it’s cold weather season, and that means dry air, dry skin and cold, cold, cold.

For me it also seems to mean scaly shins and crusty cuticles that get worse and worse every year. Thankfully, I’ve figured out a few ways to keep my skin from staging a revolt as the temperature drops. Here are five ways to winterize your skin care routine. Read more…

Win a $50 Sephora eGift card from Makeup and Beauty Blog

Do you ever play the What If game? It’s one of my favorites, and I play it all the time. It’s really easy, too. You just start a sentence with the words, “What if…” and see where it takes you. A popular version is the “What if I won the lottery…” game. That one gets a lot of mileage in this house, LOL!

It’s really fun when you try it with something totally and completely random, like, “What if I had a rainbow horn growing out of the side of my head?”

Well, I could hang a towel on it while I did my makeup, which would really come in handy because I’m always misplacing hand towels.

Work would be…challenging though. I have a feeling a horn would complicate self portraiture, depending on its length and luminosity. I’d hope that people would accept me with the horn, but I don’t know… A rainbow horn might throw some people off, especially if it just suddenly appeared one day, and I’d probably get a lot of questions like, “Why do you have a rainbow horn on the side of your head?”

Why, indeed. 🙂

As you can tell, I’m in a strange mood this morning, so let’s get to it, shall we? It’s Saturday, and I think you know what that means. It’s…

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Nov. 7

November 7th, 2011 by Karen 71 Comments

  • You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years, which I guess makes this somewhere around Vol. 193. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
  1. Mood:
  2. Determined and fiercely optimistic!

  3. What’s one of the first things you do every morning?
  4. Fix myself something warm to drink, and most of the time lately it’s been plain green tea — no milk, honey or sugar. I’m programmed to power up with those first few sips.

  5. What scent are you wearing? Today?
  6. Elie Saab Le Perfume. So graceful, fresh and feminine.

  7. What’s one thing on your to-do list for today?
  8. To run five miles after work this afternoon. Well, if everything goes according to plan.

  9. One of the weirdest gifts you’ve ever received?
  10. Hmm… Where to start? Okay, how about with Vaseline? Most of the strangest gifts I’ve ever received have been from my parents. Like last year, my mom gave me an entire Costco-sized case of Vaseline moisturizing body lotion in huge 24-oz. bottles. It totaled up to something like 200 ounces. I mean who really needs that much lotion?! 🙂

And for each of the past five Christmases they’ve given El Hub smoked salmon, we think because he said at their house once, “I like smoked salmon.” So now we have an entire shelf dedicated to smoked salmon in the kitchen.

My mom also likes to give me pajamas…and they’re always the wrong size.

  11. Do you remember when you first started using the Internet regularly?
  12. I sure do, and it was way back in the days of dial-up modems and AOL CDs. I remember being at my BFF’s house over Christmas break one year in the early 90s and her showing me how to use the AOL chat rooms. I’ll never forget that “EEE-err-OOOOOO… You’ve got mail!” LOL! Wow, that was a long time ago…

  13. The zombies are coming! What do you do to prepare?
  14. First, Tabs. I’d give Tabs one last can of gravy and hopefully, if there’s time, let him make biscuits on my tum. Of course, this is assuming that the zombies are still a few hours away. If they’re already at the front door, I’d take one long, last look into his eyes, whisper that I love him, and set him free into the hills behind our condo.

It would break my heart to let him go, but I think his chances would probably be better in the hills than they would be with us on the highways with zombies hot on our heels. He doesn’t deal well with stress. Although he’s lived indoors for the past few years, I’d hope that the instincts he once had as a kitten living on the mean streets of Mill Valley would keep him safe.

  15. What’s your go-to food for stress eating/relief?
  16. It varies. Sometimes it’s fro-yo, or Mango Bars, Nutella, cheese puffs, sliced fruit or sliced fruit served with Nutella. Other times, it’s something salty, like fries, chips, popcorn. It depends. I’m open to variety when it comes to stress eating.

  17. What do you like to do when you’re stuck at home with a cold?
  18. Watch the first two Godfather movies, drink plenty of fluids, and throw in a little bit of Blue Crush on the side.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. To keep chipping away at my weight-loss goal (five more pounds to go!), to do at least 10 minutes of free writing every morning, to try and make myself a few yummy salads for lunches during the week, and to spend some time taking pictures of the outdoors.

OOH! So I have a new tea obsession. When I was at Target last weekend getting some snacks for my parent’s visit, I picked up a tea from Celestial Seasonings called Decaf Sweet Coconut That Chai ($3 for a pack with 20 bags).

Delicious!

Don’t get me wrong — I love caffeine, but I’ve found that if I have some after noon, I get the jitters. I like this decaf version (with a dash of milk and sugar) just as much as the regular one.

Here, why don’t I fix you a cup while you fill out the Monday Poll? 🙂

  • To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

7. The zombies are coming! What do you do to prepare?

Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 164

November 6th, 2011 by Karen 51 Comments

Tabs and I really enjoyed reading your thoughts on why pets love stinky things and thought it might be fun to learn a little more about your furry (or furless, whatever the case may be) friends.

Same idea as the Monday Poll. Just copy/paste the list at the bottom into your comment.

I can’t wait to hear about your canine, feline, amphibious, reptilian (or other) companions/employers.

Who is Tabs the Cat? About three years ago I befriended a stray, flea-bitten tabby cat with a bad case of worms. I could see he’d fallen on hard times, but his profound knowledge of high fashion and department store cosmetics led me to believe that he was more than meets the eye. We became fast friends, and now he’s actually my boss (and a successful kitty model). 🙂

The Sundays with Tabs Sunday Pet Poll

  1. How did your pet come by his/her name?
  2. We’d started out calling him “F.T.,” which was short for Fussy Tabby, but that didn’t stick. At some point, F.T. just became Tabs, and he’s had the name ever since.

  3. How old is your pet?
  4. He’s about five (going on 40).

  5. Can you describe your pet’s appearance?
  6. Tabs is an 18-pound black and gray tabby with patches of orange on his nose and tum. While he fancies himself coming from a long line of feline royalty, officially, his breed is American Short Hair (but don’t tell him).

  7. How did you become your pet’s personal assistant?
  8. Well, when I met Tabs back in 2007, he was a scraggly, flea-bitten stray kitten who hung around the apartment complex I was living in. He kept his distance at first. I’d see him perched up on a hill next to our unit, or slinking around the parking garage, but he’d never walk up and say hello.

Believe it or not, he was actually a skinny kitty back then, LOL! So skinny that I was worried that he wasn’t getting enough to eat, so one day I bought a box of dry food and set some out on a plate by the front door. When I’d hear a noise, I’d watch him through the peephole, sneaking up every few days for a meal. Then it was every other day, and then every day, until eventually, I guess he just started to think of El Hub and me as his humans. I was more than happy to take on the job of being his assistant.

  9. How would you describe your pet’s personality?
  10. I’ll let you in on a secret. Even though Tabs likes to front like he’s a diva, he’s actually a really sweet boy — outgoing, affectionate and loving. Wherever you are, that’s where he wants to be, and he follows me from room to room. People who meet him say he’s almost dog-like in some ways. He loves to go out for walks on his leash, runs to the door when El Hub gets home from work, and even plays fetch!

  11. What’s your pet’s favorite pastime or toy?
  12. His feather teaser toy. It’s basically just a bunch of feathers at the end of a piece of string dangling from a plastic stick, but he stalks those feathers like they’re attached to a wild turkey! It’s so much fun to watch.

  13. What are your pet’s favorite snacks or foods?
  14. Fancy Feast in gravy, of course! It doesn’t really matter what flavor it is, as long as it’s in gravy. He also loves sliced turkey (the kind for sandwiches). And fresh zinnia leaves.

  15. When was the last time your pet got into really, really big trouble?
  16. Although he was never convicted (there was a lack of evidence), he’s the prime suspect in last year’s Christmas tree incident.

  17. What’s one of your favorite things about your pet?
  18. Sometimes when I’m writing at my desk, Tabs will jump on my lap, drape his upper body across my right arm (always my right arm) and take a nap. For the record, it’s not easy to type with 18 pounds of cat on your arm, but he’s just so blasted cute when he does it that I can’t say no.
