Saturday Surfing

September 11th, 2010 by Karen 8 Comments

Afternoon, Saturday surfer. How’s the water?

(dips toe in to check)

OOH! It’s perfect. 🙂 I have enough time to catch a couple waves, but them I’m off to the mall to do some window shopping. I’m in SUCH a mall mood right now.

In other news, I re-watched the last Project Runway again, and you know what? That Michael C. is a class act. The way he treated Mondo after being treated poorly himself — that’s class. He may not be the world’s greatest tailor, but I like his design aesthetic and how well he works with others.

9 Things: I Could Never Date Someone Who…

September 9th, 2010 by Karen 75 Comments

The cat and I are a package deal

If 41% of all tweets are considered pointless babble, does that mean the other 59% are awesome little pearls of wisdom like this one that crossed my path last week?

Someone posited the following for consideration: “I could never date ______.”

Hilarity (and zillions of retweets) ensued. 🙂

Even though El Hub and I have been together since the dawn of time (roughly a decade), I still remember what it was like to be lookin’ for love in all the wrong places.

Here are nine things on my “I could never date______” list. What’s on yours?

1. Someone who really, really loves earthworms

He could be perfect in every other way, but if he kept earthworms as pets or owned an earthworm farm, our relationship would not go far.

2. Someone who hates my cat

What can I say? Tabs and I have a relationship that my male friend would simply have to accept. I definitely need a dude who’s down with the kittehs.

3. Someone with a dramatically different perspective on punctuation

I’m no card-carrying member of the punctuation police, but, homie, better, know, the, basics, if you catch my drift.

One of the boys I dated ended every sentence with an ellipsis.

Hi… How was your day… Mine was great… I spent all day listening to old Stevie Wonder records… Now I’m making myself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich…

Drove me nuts! Of course, he was a DJ and knew music like the back of his hand, which leads me to…

4. Someone with uncompromising taste in music

Music’s always been a big part of my life, and I’ve always tried to keep an open mind about different genres, unlike some of the dudes I dated. One of them would only listen to techno — constantly. Another absolutely hated hip-hop (sacrilege!).

Old school!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Sept. 6

September 6th, 2010 by Karen 45 Comments

  1. Mood:
  2. Relaxed, happy and feeling positive about the week.

  3. What’s your favorite kind of doughnut?
  4. I like your run-of-the mill glazed ones, please (no twists… I’m not into twists).

  5. Cropped pants — yay or nay?
  6. On me, BIG nay. They make me look even shorter than I already am.

  7. Do you ever brown bag your lunches?
  8. When I worked in the city, I would usually pick something up from one of the food courts down there. It gave me a break from the office. Now, since I’m usually working at home, I eat here, but once or twice each week I’ll treat myself to the salad bar at Whole Paycheck (aka Whole Foods).

  9. Is there anything that you wish you had more of?
  10. Time, sleep, patience, cats (LOL!), comfortable stretchy jeans…

  11. Your favorite quickie hairstyle?
  12. If I’m wearing it up, I like messy buns with a headband. If it’s down, I’ll flat iron the top layers and ends. Both only take a few minutes to do.

  13. What’s potentially the most embarrassing song someone would find on your iPod?
  14. There are too many to name! 🙂 — but I’ll go with Rump Shaker, by Wreckx-N-Effect.

  15. Describe your biggest beauty disaster:
  16. I was in sixth grade, but I remember it like it was yesterday. My parents had forced me to chop my hair short like a boy’s (as luck would have it, this was around the time I got boobs). Oh, I cried rivers as I left the salon, and then just when I was beginning to come to terms with my new hair, a lady at a Hallmark store referred to me as a “nice little boy.” I’ve had some bad haircuts in my day, but that one was by far THE WORST!

  17. Current mascara crush?
  18. Chanel Inimitable Intense! The stuff blends so incredibly quickly, and I love how easy it is to build volume with it at the base of my lashes.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. To hang on until Mercury leaves retrograde on Sept. 12, to stick to my running schedule, to sing at least one song every single day, and to finish reading two inspirational writing books by next Monday.

What up, cutie patootie? It’s the Labor Day holiday here in the U.S., which is when we salute hard workers everywhere by taking the day off. 🙂 Well, actually, a lot of us still work today (sorry). If you do have the day off, however, I hope you’re doing something fun.

Drop in and let me know how you’re doing today. Talk soon!

To do the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

1. Mood:
2. Favorite kind of doughnut?
3. Cropped pants — yay or nay?
4. Do you ever brown bag your lunches?
5. Is there anything that you wish you had more of?
6. Your favorite quickie hairstyle?
7. Most embarrassing song on your iPod?
8. Biggest beauty disaster?
9. Current mascara crush?
10. Weekly goals:

I hope yours is a wonderful week filled with fun, promise and adventure. 🙂

Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 103

September 5th, 2010 by Karen 10 Comments

Your Makeup and Beauty Blog horoscope
Disclaimer: Tabs is NOT a certified astrologer…but he does read Susan Miller, a lot.

Your September beauty horoscope

Aries (March 21- April 19)
Work it, Aries! A New Moon in Virgo on September 8 will inspire you at work. Your job (or your search for a new one) will be your focus for a few weeks, so treat yourself to some work-friendly makeup. May I suggest Bobbi Brown or Trish McEvoy?

Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Virgo’s large and in charge this month and will help you keep on top of things, sweet Taurus. You’ll be extra-organized! — making this a good time to clear out clutter everywhere, including your makeup collection. After the middle of the month, Venus and Mars will move to Scorpio and your relationship sector, so get your booty call makeup bag in order (now!).

Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Do you feel that, Gemini? Love is in the air (through the middle of the month), thanks to Venus and Mars being in Libra, so surround yourself with scents that make you feel sexy. Don’t worry, though. You won’t do anything too cray-cray. 🙂 Saturn will keep you from acting impulsively.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Tread lightly, lovely Cancer, because Mercury remains in retrograde through September 12, and things could still go awry. If you’re thinking about getting your hair done, you might want to wait one more week. When Jupiter and Uranus near your career and reputation sector, things could change at work (for the better). Keep those gorgeous eyes open to new opportunities…and relationships. 🙂

Leo (July 23-August 22)
Have some fun this month, Leo! Schedule a day or night out with your girls. Maybe a trip to a spa, or meet for a mani/pedi and brunch. Use your leadership skills to help get things going. You always bring great ideas to the table.

Virgo (August 23-September 22)
The New Moon comes to town on September 8, vivacious Virgo, inspiring you to work it out! Hit the gym, and load up on healthy snacks. With Saturn, Venus and Mars in your finance sector, it’s also a good time to haul (MAC Fabulous Felines, anyone?), but do your research first to avoid impulse buying.

Libra (September 23-October 22)
Dayum, you look good this month, girl! With Venus and Mars in your sign, you’ll be hard to resist. Bust out your sexiest smokey eye, and wear your hair down, because your love life’s about to heat up!

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Where do you see yourself in a year, sweet Scorpio? With the Sun and Mercury in Virgo this month, this would be a good time to take stock and to evaluate your look. Venus and Mars enter your sign around the middle of the month, and things could heat up with your love life. Now might be a good time to learn how to do that sexy hairstyle you’ve wanted to try.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
Triple check your makeup before leaving the house this month, my dear Sagittarius. Comb over every detail, not just with your makeup, but on the career front, too. And if you’re planning a big change, do your research now while the Sun and Mercury are in Virgo.

Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
You’re the life of the party this month, Cap, so line up a few of your favorite party looks (how ’bout a bright pink lip and false lashes?). If at any time you feel a little uncertain about yourself, call upon your inner cheerleader. She’ll be your best advocate.

Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
Watch your beauty budget this month, Aquarius, and keep your eyes peeled for bargains. Be ready to pounce! With Venus and Mars in Libra early this month, there are great deals to be had on beauty and travel.

Pisces (February 19-March 20)
Treat yourself well this month, pretty Pisces, especially if you don’t feel your best. Get plenty of rest (you deserve that spa day!), and turn to the Sun, while it’s in Virgo, to help you through any rough spots.

May the stars be with you,

Makeup and Beauty Blog Open ThreadIf you’re new to the open thread, here it is in a nutshell:

Everyone here is very cool, too, so feel free to reach out. The open thread lasts all day and night, so pop by whenever you can, and as often as you like.

The Weekly Roundup: Posts You Might Have Missed

September 5th, 2010 by Karen 2 Comments

The Makeup and Beauty Blog Weekly Roundup

Sometimes it’s fun to be theatrical.

“I’ve never seen this side of you before, Michelle, and it’s just not pretty.”

“Gah! Has everyone gone cray-cray? The girl’s a blogger, Kim, not a singer. She takes pictures and prattles on about makeup. That doesn’t qualify her for the stage. This is Dreamgirls, for Pete’s sake! We have standards here.”

“Wait — you know what I think? I think you’re just jealous, Michelle.”

“What? No! Kim –”

“Yes, I think that’s it. I think this is really all about you and that chubby cat, isn’t it?”

“Of course not!”

“It is! You’re lashing out because you lost the Fabulous Felines job to that cat, what was his name?–”

“Tabs.”

“Yes! Tabs. And now you’re taking it out on his girl…”

“No, that’s not it. You’re wrong, Kim.”

“Sure it is. I mean, you’ve always been a diva, Michelle, but this is low, even for you.”

“Oh, spare me, Kim! You’re not the one who lost the best modeling job of your life to a fat tabby cat, so spare me your righteous indignation. I don’t need it. Not from you. I would have gotten that MAC job if it weren’t for that stupid cat, so yeah, I don’t want his girl performing on my stage, and I’ll be damned if I stand by and let it happen. Over my dead body!”

Rise and shine, morning glory. 🙂 The road to Broadway is paved with makeup, ladies! I had such a blast watching Dreamgirls in the city yesterday. Now I feel invigorated and ready to take on the world!

LOL! Not really. Actually, I feel ready to take on a second cup of coffee, but you know what I mean.

So what are you up to today? Something fun, I hope. I don’t have any plans yet, which feels nice. I may go shopping for shoes at Marshalls… That’s always fun.

Here’s a brief look back at some of the makeup and beauty products we talked about this week. Let me know if you had a favorite among the bunch.

The Bobbi Brown Black Velvet CollectionBOBBI BROWN
BLACK VELVET

Darth Vader: Bobbi, you do not yet realize your importance. You have only begun to discover your power. Join me, and I will complete your training. With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy.
Bobbi Brown: Speak to me.
Darth Vader: If you only knew the power of the Dark Side…

Actually, Bobbi does know the power of the Dark Side. She joined it this fall, but not in an evil empire kind of way (although I would totally buy a Vader lipstick!). Read more…

A MAC Fabulous Felines Face of the Day: Cat Eyes with a Golden TwistMAC FABULOUS FELINES
CAT EYE WITH A GOLDEN TWIST

Tabs has been bugging me to incorporate his MAC Leopard Luxe goodies into a look. It’s his favorite one of the Fabulous Felines color stories, and he’s been going on and on about its warm gold, brown, peach and black shades. Today he said of the colors, “Meow, mrow mrroww ft ft,” to which I think everyone agrees.

Just because a look utilizes neutrals doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Take the standard cat eye, for example. They’re often done with black liners or other dark neutrals, and today I tried mine with a twist — a shimmery golden liquid eyeliner along the lashline. I wanted to spice up the look with glitter without going full-on disco.

Beginning with a basic neutral cat eye using a few colors from the Leopard Luxe eyeshadow quad — shimmery golden beige Wild By Nature on my brow bone, shimmery peachy gold Style Predator on the lid and shimmery brown Notoriety in the crease — I then drew a cat eye shape with shiny black Superslick Liquid Eye Liner in On The Hunt along my upper and lower lashlines. The LORAC Evening Out Complexion KitLORAC EVENING OUT
COMPLEXION KIT

I didn’t have a cubic inch of extra room in my bag when I packed for that trip to Reno a couple weeks ago, so instead of bringing my usual brigade of face products (tinted moisturizer, stick foundation, liquid foundation… Um, have I ever mentioned that I tend to overpack?), I lightened my load with LORAC’s new Evening Out Complexion Kit ($38).

The sleek gunmetal compact must have been made with on-the-go girl secret agents in mind because concealment is the name of this game.

The kit comes with a powder foundation, two cream concealers, a sponge applicator and a tiny Jane Bond-ian concealer brush. Read more…

A MAC Fabulous Felines Face of the Day: A Russian Blue on Brown EyesMAC FABULOUS FELINES
RUSSIAN BLUE ON BROWN EYES

Vets say he’s an American Shorthair, the cat-chall breed for kitties of questionable lineage (the miscellaneous cat-egory of the kitty world, if you will).

And I’d always figured Tabs was cool with being called an American Shorthair, but ever since the arrival of MAC’s Fabulous Felines, I’ve been finding evidence to the contrary — posters of exotic purebreds on the wall, copies of Cat Fancy around the house, and his diary left open to a page in which he referred to himself as an “Egyptian Mau/Ragdoll/Toyger hybrid.” Read more…

The alley grew darker the deeper she went, but she knew he came this way, the cat with the tabby fur.

She sped around a corner and almost tripped on something metal and loud, a trash can maybe. She didn’t stop. It was dark, so dark. Out of breath, her heart racing, she barely made out the silhouettes of two dogs playing cards under a fire escape before she passed them.

“Which way’d he go?” she barked, pivoting on three-inch heels.

No answer. Damn scamps. She didn’t stop, couldn’t stop, just kept running, arms flailing wildly in the dark.

“Hello!” she cried out, to nowhere, to everywhere, to him. “Please, wait!”

Still nothing. So she kept running, deeper into the night. He was here. She knew it, somewhere, the cat with the tabby fur. Read more…

Boots Botanical Conditioning Clay Mask BOOTS BOTANICAL
CONDITIONING CLAY MASK

My combination skin’s been acting up lately (annoying little pimples on my chin, clogged pores on my cheeks, dry patches around my nose… the usual crapalicious bullsh*t ), so last night I took it as a blogger’s blessing and decided to test oil-free Boots Botanics Conditioning Clay Mask ($9) for the first time.

Just shake (it sounds like canned soup!), slather and let dry for between 10-20 minutes before rinsing with warm water. The mineral-rich clay, which is harvested from the sea and combined with burdock root extract, contains a negative electrical charge that, according to Boots, draws the crud from pores without over-drying the skin.

I kept it on for a full 20 minutes before rinsing, breathing in the earthy scent and enjoying the tightening sensation. While it was on, I could actually SEE the product settling into my pores, too, hopefully working its magic. ‘Twas fascinating AND disgusting — both at the same time! Read more…

Sometimes “quick” describes something bad…

Like the blind date I went on some years ago with the Beatles-hating dude who confessed to listening to nothing but techno music 24/7. I grew up on a steady diet of John, Paul, George and Ringo, so when he dissed Blackbird five minutes into the evening, something inside me went, “OH, HELL NO!” I faked a headache halfway through my beer and hightailed it home.

And sometimes “quick” describes something good…

Like the new Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara ($30, available in four shades), a new take on Chanel’s original Inimitable (a lengthening, curling, volumizing star!).

The O.G. version was born back in 2006. This new version 2.0 extends its predecessor’s double rainbow “all the way across the sky!” — with MORE lash drama on all fronts. Plus, because it works well even with a single layer, it’s also quick. Read more…

AFFAIR PALETTE

For Christmas last year my little brother got our mom a Snuggie (“as seen on TV!”).

What’s a Snuggie? Well, if you’ve seen the late-night commercials, it’s the world famous blanket with sleeves (kinda looks like a reverse wizard’s cape), and my mum thinks it’s cooler than a young Paul McCartney in butt-hugger pants.

I talked a lot of crap about ‘em until the day I tried one on…

DANG, they’re unbelievably comfortable and soft.

Which reminds me of another “so soft!” moment I’ve had recently, this one with LORAC’s Private Affair Palette ($38). Read more…
