Saturday Surfing

May 8th, 2010 by Karen 34 Comments

Morning, homies! How was Friday night? Did it involve any makeup, music, dancing, boys, or dancing boys who wear makeup?

I’m not awake fully awake yet…which explains my big cup of coffee and zombie-like stare, and I feel like starting the day with simple tasks and two easily digestible comfort foods: 1) a warm caffeinated beverage and 2) an hour of web surfing. Would you like to join me?

Random bright spots

  • How to choose the right sunscreen — Bella Sugar
  • Get the nails Beyoncé worked in the Why Don’t You Love Me video — All Lacquered Up
  • 5 reasons why you may be breaking out — Afrobella
  • Have you heard of this Japanese Addiction? — Blogdorf Goodman
  • Will you splurge on Dior’s Serum de Rouge? — Temptalia
  • 7 life-changing lessons learned from Walt Disney makeup mouse — Dumb Little Man
  • I got a little teary when I saw these pictures of animals inside the womb… — This Blog Rules
  • Bored? Why not build a time machine? — Daily Mail
  • For all my crazy cat ladies 🙂 — Meowmania

New in beauty

  • TEAM EDWARD or JACOB? Share your Twilight spirit via Luna’s Color Palettes ($28 each)
  • CUTE! My inner surfer girl wants this Beach Girl Set from Philosophy ($28)
  • Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50 ($32) provides long-lasting, lightweight uber-protection
  • Ulta’s Irresistible Eyes Water-Resistant Eye Shadow Palette ($13) comes with eight summery shadows at a bargain basement price
  • WANTS! — these Sephora Vogue glosses

This dude KILLS IT with one of my favorite Phoenix songs, Lisztomania

I’ve watched this more than 20 times, and it still makes me laugh!

What are you doing today, and does it involve makeup? 🙂

Comment to Win $65 in COVERGIRL Blast Collection Cosmetics [Multiple Winners]

May 7th, 2010 by Karen 393 Comments

  • The giveaway is now closed; congrats to winners Van, Theresa, Melessa, Neela, Allie, Christy and Jenny. Before you go, check the home page for ongoing giveaways.

WOOT, homies! I can practically *taste* the weekend on my tongue. I’m out here counting down the minutes to Saturday! My plan is to spend part of the day straight-up playing with makeup — what I call good old fashioned “me” time. 🙂

I’m thinking about doing a colorful eye and just wearing it around the house while I play. Maybe something blue, green or pink (!)? Do you ever do that? — get dolled up even though you aren’t going out?

If you do, the prizes in today’s giveaway should make for great home-based (or otherwise) beauty fun.

The prize

Seven lucky ladies will each win a prize package ($65 value each) with the following drama-inducing goodies from COVERGIRL’s Blast Collection of bold makeup for lids, lashes and lips:

  • Smoky ShadowBlast DIY Kit ($48): COVERGIRL’s double-sided Smoky ShadowBlast sticks are great for bold, colorful smokey eyes, and this kit comes with all six of them, along with a drugstore coupon and a bunch of wicked smokey eye tips ( here’s a cool video that shows ShadowBlast in action)
  • LashBlast Fusion Mascara ($9): When it comes to thickness and length, Fusion, the newest member of Team LashBlast, delivers (even with a single layer)
  • ShineBlast Gloss ($8): This light-reflecting gloss packs plenty of shimmer and mirror-like shine

How to enter…

2ways2enterEntering is easy. There are two different ways, and you can do both of them for two chances to win.

First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post, a comment about anything at all! Dish about the freaky dream you had the other night, what your plans are for the weekend, the annoying thing your SO does with his/her toes, what your pet looks like, or wax philosophic about your favorite pair of shoes.

I share a condominium with my husband and a tabby cat named Tabs. Both of them have low-hanging bellies, but only Tabs treats me like a low-level assistant. 🙂

  • Sorry, international babes. COVERGIRL wants to limit this giveaway to US readers only, but I’ve got something else lined up that includes you gals next week.

Follow me
Second, enter by following me on Twitter and retweeting (RT) the following message:

Follow @karenmbb and RT to Win $65 in COVERGIRL Blast Collection Cosmetics http://bit.ly/a5gjQ2

Recap…

  1. Enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post, and don’t forget to use a valid email address so I can reach you if you win.
  2. Follow me on Twitter and retweet the following message:

Follow @karenmbb and RT to Win $65 in COVERGIRL Blast Collection Cosmetics http://bit.ly/a5gjQ2

I’ll pick the winners at random from among the people who enter by 11:59 p.m. PST on Monday, May 10.

Boa sorte!!

When Was Your Last Haircut?

May 6th, 2010 by Karen 83 Comments

Crikey! I’m waaay overdue for a trim. My last run-in with a scissors was December, and now my layers are all out of whack.

The situation with my roots is even worse (three words: hella white hairs). I’d planned a trip to the salon next week, but my May astrology chart (yes, I’m serious) says I should postpone any big physical changes until after Mercury comes out of retrograde… I know, I know — it’s kinda kooky to base styling decisions on planetary alignments, but Susan Miller rarely lets me down. 🙂

What about you? When was your last haircut?

Kristin Davis: Her Best Hair?

May 4th, 2010 by Karen 12 Comments

We’re now less than one month away from the Sex and the City 2 movie release, woo hoo! I’m all sorts of stoked. 🙂

Do you ever think about which of the SATC girls you’re most like? I feel like I’m about half Carrie (SJP!) and half Charlotte (played by the lovely Kristin Davis).

Kristin, like her character Charlotte, doesn’t take wild risks with her hair color, length or style, but every once in a while she’ll spice things up with variations on curls and waves.

Which of Kristin's hairstyles do you like best?

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, May 3

May 3rd, 2010 by Karen 71 Comments

  1. Mood:
  2. Got a touch of the Monday blues this morning, but it’s just a minor case.

  3. Hair?
  4. A low, loose ponytail (with a headband)

  5. Do you have any exciting plans this summer?
  6. No, not really, but I would like to get back in killer running shape and finally get at least a few pieces of new furniture for the condo. I’d love to sneak in a weekend trip to Tahoe at some point, and maybe another one to San Diego if it works out.

  7. What’s the last thing you’ve eaten?
  8. Two slices of whole wheat toast with a generous layer of — wait for it — Nutella!

  9. Eyes/lips/cheeks:
  10. Nothing yet, but I set aside the Clarins Instant Sun Light Eye Quartet & Liner Palette and Smooth Compact Highlighter for my makeup today.

  11. What’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to you?
  12. Turning down the opportunity to go to law school. Deep down inside I knew it wasn’t right for me, and I’ve never rarely looked back.

  13. What’s something you like about yourself?
  14. My sense of humor (I guess I should have started this one with a joke) 🙂

  15. Something I’m looking forward to this week?
  16. I told myself that if I meet my goals this week I can swing by Anthropologie on Friday to pick up this dress as a reward. LOL! Sometimes maintaining a positive attitude requires mental slight of hand (or straight-up bribery).

  17. Outfit:
  18. I’m still in my jammies — dark gray yoga pants, a white tank top and a blue zip-up sweatshirt

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. Keep checking tasks off my to-do list (I really want that dress!), get better about stretching every day, complete the 30 Day Shred at least three times, and drink a big glass of water first thing every morning (fitness experts say, among water’s many other benefits, it’s also a good source of energy).

What’s up, girls? I’m loaded up on allergy meds (thank ye gods for Zyrtec and Flonase!) and ready for anything nature throws at me!

Let me know how you’re doing. If you’re new to the Monday Poll, it takes just a minute. Just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments. 🙂

Le list

1. Mood:
2. Hair:
3. What are your plans this summer?
4. What’s the last thing you’ve eaten?
5. Eyes/lips/cheeks:
6. What’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to you?
7. What’s a quality you like about yourself?
8. Something you’re looking forward to this week:
9. Outfit:
10. Weekly goals:

Let’s slay the Monday blues! Who’s with me?

makeup and beauty blog open thread

Heya, girl. 🙂 It’s late Sunday afternoon; do you know where your weekend went?

Mine seems to have vanished in the blink of an eye!

I know it’s late in the day for an open thread, but why not, right?

The open thread is basically where we just chat in the comments. Any topic you like, from your favorite book (mine’s To Kill a Mockingbird), to the trip you’re planning to take, your favorite flavor of ice cream, highlight of your day — or just drop in to say konbanwa.

Random pictures to get the conversation started…

See you in a few! 🙂

Even though I’ve known Tabs for most of his life, I learn new things about him every day, like how he turned down the role of Vincent Chase in Entourage. Yup, he said he didn’t want to be typecast. 🙂

Here are some other things you may not know about Tabs. He…

This Week’s Top Posts… and Notes from WordCamp SF

May 2nd, 2010 by Karen 10 Comments

Top posts of the week

Good morning, glory. 🙂 Are you up and at ’em yet? I’m still warming up my engine…

Wasn’t this week a good one for lip products? Rimmel surprised me yet again! This time it was their $6 Moisture Renew Lipsticks. I swear, if that company keeps overachieving like this, I can think of some big department store brands with reason to worry.

I’m just going through my notes from the WordCamp conference in the city yesterday and coming to the unfortunate conclusion that it wasn’t a great event (for info from a GREAT blogging conference, check out these notes from Blog World 2009), but I did pick up a few juicy tidbits of blogging information. If you’re interested, I’ll paste them down at the bottom of this post.

Back to beauty — what was your favorite product this week? Have you given those Rimmel Lipsticks a try?

Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick: A $6 Drugstore Dream

Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick“Despite the somewhat flimsy packaging and the fact that you might have to layer these lipsticks, they’re winners in my book. Based on price, wear time and their hydrating formula, keep these in mind (a BOGO sale might be a perfect opportunity to stock up!).”

15-Minute Morning Makeup: Easy Peasy Neutrals with Urban Decay and MAC

15-Minute Morning Makeup with Urban Decay and MAC“Lately my morning makeup’s been like Switzerland (neutral). 🙂 I know it’s just a phase, but I haven’t been wanting to spend the time, ya know? Here’s a simple eye that only takes about 15 minutes to do. It features black liner and shimmery brown shadow with just a bit of blending and smudging.”

Benefit Boo Boo Zap: You Can Be My Hero, Baby!

Benefit Boo Boo Zap“As far as kicking pimples to the curb, Boo Boo Zap works fast — faster than the long list of benzoyl peroxide products I’ve tried in the past (and that includes Proactiv). The scent might turn some ladies off (it smells like strong medicine!), and it’s not the least expensive spot treatment on the market, but I think it’s well worth a try.”

Wimpy Lashes, Meet MAC Opulash Mascara

MAC Opulash Mascara“With Opulash, MAC is venturing into totally tubular Clinique Lash Power/DiorShow territory. I’m sure you remember DiorShow… With its tubes of mascara that surround each lash? Opulash also coats with tubes of mascara, and despite how long lasting it is, it still washes right off with nothing but warm water; no extra eye makeup remover required.”

Too Faced Perfect Lips Liner Loves Lips in the Nude

Too Faced Perfect Lips Liner“Lining and filling with this soft, creamy pencil evens out the natural color of my pucker and increases the wear time of other lip products like Too Faced Glamour Gloss. Not only does it play well with others, but it wears well by itself for that coveted no-makeup look.”
