Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Mar. 8

Pink on my desk: MAC Lip Liner in Trimmed in Pink, MAC Cremesheen Glass in Petite Indulgence, Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Blush in Walk of Shame, Clinique Superbalm in Grapefruit

  1. Mood:
  2. Hyper! I had to get up early (5:45) and have already downed four huge mugs of green tea. I’m practically vibrating in my chair…

  3. What lip products do you find yourself buying over and over again?
  4. MAC Nymphette Lipglass for color, Clinique Superbalm in Grapefruit for moisture and the Chanel Aqualumieres because they’re Chanel!

  5. Something you’d like to improve about yourself?
  6. My ability to stick to routines and strict schedules… Not strong points for me. I’m very go-with-the-flow, which is great for adventure but not so great when it comes to time management.

  7. Guys with beards — hot or not?
  8. Not! I don’t like kissing scratchy facial hair.

  9. Eyes/lips/cheeks:
  10. I’m wearing neutral smokey eyes (ha, what else is new?) with pink cheeks and lips. Eyes: Estee Lauder Michael Kors Eyeshadow in Blonde Mink, MAC Technakohl Liner in Graphblack, Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden. Lips: MAC Lip Pencil in Trimmed in Pink, MAC Cremesheen Glass in Petite Indulgence. Cheeks: Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Blush in Walk of Shame.

  11. One thing you’re looking forward to this spring?
  12. Exploring the outdoors here in Novato. I’m told there’s lots of places to hike and bike here. I’ll just have to remember to load up on the Zyrtec beforehand, LOL!

  13. What’s one random thing you think you’re great at doing?
  14. Remembering ’80s pop music lyrics!

  15. What’s your favorite eyeliner?
  16. Hmm, this is a tough one. Right now I’m really loving on the MAC Technakohl liners (so easy to use!), but MAC Kohl in Powersurge and MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack are both old standbys.

  17. Outfit:
  18. Dark stretch skinny jeans, a black button-up sweater, black platform sandals and multiple layers o’ faux pearls.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. Create a schedule and actually stick to it, clean the bathroom (blech!), smile more often, and ease up on the chocolate (did I mention I live five minutes away from a See’s Candies?!)

There are Mondays that greet me with a sense of dread, and then there are days like today, where I feel pretty darn good. I hope your day got off to a good start. If not, I hope it takes a turn for the better. 🙂

Mondays mean a fresh start, a clean slate, and who knows where the week will take us?

Granted, my temporary feeling of Monday euphoria could also be ’cause I’ve consumed massive amounts of caffeine, but, hey, I’m just gonna go with it!

When you get a chance, let me know what’s crack-a-lackin’ on your end by copying the list below, and pasting it with your answers in the comments.

Le list

1. Mood
2. What’s one lip gloss you find yourself buying over and over again?
3. Something you’d like to improve about yourself?
4. Guys with beards — hot or not?
5. Eyes/lips/cheeks:
6. What are you looking forward to this spring?
7. What’s one random thing you’re great at doing?
8. What’s your favorite eyeliner?
9. Outfit:
10. Weekly goals:

I’m off to grab another cup of tea, whee! Talk to you in a few, sunshines. 🙂

Sundays with Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 77

March 7th, 2010 by Karen 10 Comments

Yah, right! Can you believe this? So, my assistant Karen leaves to get my grande latte with extra cream this morning, and what does she say before she walks out the door?

“Tabs, don’t touch the computer.”

WTF!? Don’t what? Touch MY computer? I can use MY computer whenever the hell I want, woman.

In fact, I’m gonna use it right now. Here are some of MY sites of the day.

Represent!

Cats for Gold

I am APPALLED by the premise upon which this website operates. I mean, cats for gold!? Are you kidding me? It’s feline trafficking, and the proprietors should be ashamed of themselves.

Hipster Kitty

I was a hipster kitty before hipster kitties were cool. Now the whole business is so commercialized. I play the game because I like the finer things in life, but spoken word for catnip? Now that goes too far.

Modern Cat

I wasn’t always a jet setting, Fancy Feast-eating super cat model. I had my Cat Chow days like everyone else, but now I crave Modern Cat luxury.

Obey the Kitty

NOW we’re talking. I’ve been reading some of Chairman Meow’s archived speeches lately, and you know, that cat really makes a lot of sense.

Ikea Hacker

Luxury isn’t always about things being expensive. Take Ikea, for example. They have some fantastic idea generators if you just want to let go and be creative and explore whatever crazy cat tower ideas you have. Go for it, I say!

What’s Your Earliest Makeup Memory?

March 6th, 2010 by Karen 68 Comments

What’s your earliest makeup memory?

My very first makeup memory stars my mom, who, truth be told, has never really been a makeup kinda gal. She’s always had a few beauty bits and pieces sitting around, things she picked up at the occasional Mary Kay party, but makeup’s not really her thing.

I remember one time she brought a purple eyeshadow duo home from one of those parties. I was seven at the time, and she left it in the bathroom where it tempted me for DAYS.

I’d pad into the bathroom at 6:30 every morning and stare at it with sleepy eyes, fighting the urge to open the compact and stick my fingers into the pan.

I made it about a week before I just couldn’t take it anymore.

One morning I wandered in, grabbed the compact and stuffed it into the pocket of my pajamas, figuring I could take it to school with me and work some magic in the girl’s bathroom before class.

But I didn’t make it that far. On my way back to my room with the forbidden eyeshadow, I bumped into my mom, who coincidentally happened to be standing in front of an oversized picture of Jesus in the hallway. That’s when I dropped the eyeshadow and burst into tears.

My mom reached down, picked it up — thankfully it didn’t break — and then soothed me until I calmed down. 🙂

What happened to the purple shadow after that remains a mystery… I have no other memories of it. Maybe it’s still somewhere in my mom’s small makeup collection, lost for all eternity.

It’s Natural: Organic Beauty Still Going Strong

March 6th, 2010 by Karen 14 Comments

Despite 2009’s global economic slowdown, sales of natural cosmetics kept chugging along at a spirited pace, clocking in 14% growth worldwide, most of it in Europe and North America.

Earlier this year, almost a quarter of us thought (23%) natural/organic beauty would be 2010’s biggest beauty trend, and the move toward more organic beauty shows no signs of stopping.

My biggest pet peeves with the whole natural/organic beauty market have to do with standardization and certification. I mean, what does it really mean to say that a product’s natural or organic? Sometimes it’s hard to tell, right? And new certifications pop up all the time, like BDIH and Ecocert in Europe, and the USDA (for personal care items based on agricultural products) or brand new NSF/ANSI 305 “Made with Organic” logo here in the States.

I would LOVE to see just a single label or logo used to certify all organic beauty bona-fides. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Are you buying organic beauty products on a regular basis?

Saturday Surfing

March 6th, 2010 by Karen 16 Comments

Congratulations all around, ladies! We made it to Saturday. 🙂 I’ve been trying to ease up on my coffee intake lately (been on a tea kick), but I give myself a pass on Saturdays. It’s amazing how something as small as a latte can make the day feel special, like a reward for making it through the week in one piece.

Before I go get my Starbucks on, do you have time for a little Saturday surfing?

Have you heard of Chat Roulette??

I’m getting the itch to travel (and skateboard)

What do ya got going on today? I’m basically running errands (post office, grocery store and Target)… Maybe I can squeeze in a run if the inspiration strikes.

Have a most excellent Saturday!

Anna Kendrick: Her Best Hair?

March 5th, 2010 by Karen 16 Comments

I wonder which movie’s gonna win the Academy Award for Best Makeup this year. Hmm… Seeing as Star Trek’s the only one of the three I’ve seen, I guess it gets my vote. 🙂

Do you go buck wild for awards shows? I do for the Oscars, and this year I was shocked to see a familiar face from Twilight among the list of nominees for Best Supporting Actress, the adorable Anna Kendrick, for Up in the Air (I STILL haven’t seen it but really want to).

The 24-year old stars opposite George Clooney in the film. I’ve been a fan of hers since 2007’s Rocket Science. Remember her in that? And homegirl’s been singing and acting in Broadway musicals since the age of 12, so she’s already got quite a resume, Oscar nod notwithstanding.

Anna’s going up against a few of my favorite actresses, though, namely Penelope Cruz and Maggie Gyllenhaal… I have no idea who’ll win, but I have a soft spot in my heart for young upstarts. Good luck, Anna! 🙂

Which of Anna's hairstyles do you like best?

Scented Hairsprays Have Come a Looooong Way

March 4th, 2010 by Karen 5 Comments

I’m not ashamed to admit that I was an ’80s hair bear. I still remember how the girls’ bathroom smelled after lunch… The air always hung heavy with Aqua Net, which was like a mix of burning Keds (worn without the laces, of course), freshly laid asphalt and kitty litter. Really, it’s a miracle we never passed out!

Hairspray scents have come a long way since those stanky chemical days. Now I bet the girls’ bathroom smells like a fancy spa. Sheesh… Kids today! 🙂

Great Smelling Hairsprays

by Amber Katz, Daily Makeover

Let’s be real with each other: We all have Aquanet-soaked memories of 80s hairstyles.

Big, volumized hairstyles came at the price of massive flammability and a most unsexy scent.

There have been many advances in hair product technology and while they range from the surge of sulfate-free shampoos to nourishing treatments that restore health within the span of a single shower–none are so universally lauded and appreciated as the great smelling hairspray.

Here, a few of our fave olfactory delights.

Neil George Perfect Hold Hairspray

Coconut-scented, this flexible holding agent will transport you to a veritable vacay while it ensures your ‘do stays decidedly local.
