Two Ways to Win Mission Skincare

November 20th, 2009 by Karen 122 Comments

mission-skincare

Good mornin’ and happy Friday, babes! Looks like we made it. 🙂

This week took a lot out of me, but now I feel great. How ’bout we kick things off with a giveaway?

Mission Skincare’s high-performance beauty products for face and body were created by athletes, for athletes, but you don’t need a wicked serve to appreciate the line.

Co-created by tennis goddess and Glamour mag Woman of the Year Serena Williams, the antioxidant-rich products are paraben-, preservative- and cruelty-free.

The prize

Five lucky ladies will each win three goodies from Mission Skincare by Serena Williams (a $48 value):

  • Active Daily Facial Cleanser ($40): A quick-cleansing foaming face wash (works in 90 seconds flat!) that removes makeup and impurities while nourishing and renewing the skin
  • Pomegranate Lip Balmer SPF 15 ($4): This long-lasting lip balm (in Serena’s favorite flavor) contains cocoa butter to hydrate and broad-spectrum SPF15 to protect; it’s also paraben- and preservative-free
  • Pink Lemonade Lip Balmer SPF 15 ($4): Also paraben- and preservative-free in sweet-smelling pink lemonade

How to enter…

2ways2enterEntering is easy. There are two different ways, and you can do both of them for two chances to win.

First, you can enter by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post. In it, tell me about your plans for the weekend. 🙂

One word: fun! Tonight, I’m heading to a Warriors basketball game (three cheers for hot dogs!), and tomorrow I’ll be in line for New Moon.

Second, enter by following me on Twitter and retweeting (RT) the following message:

Did Stila Lip Glaze Sing a Solo in this Week’s Episode of Glee?

November 19th, 2009 by Karen 32 Comments

glee-top

Hey, cheerios! Did any of my eagle-eyed makeup geeks/freaks peep the Stila Lip Glaze lookalike in this week’s episode of Glee?

Yesterday’s migraine rendered me mentally useless, so I spent last night on the couch resting and catching up on Glee, the musical dramedy about misfit teens who sing show choir.

It took me a few episodes to warm up to the show — the pacing’s kinda weird — but now I’m hooked. The world needs more spontaneous musical numbers, right? And I’m totes crushing on Mr. Shu, played by Matthew Morrison. 🙂

oh-hai-mr-shu-1

In this week’s ep, Rachel, one of the glee club girls, is primping in the bathroom with a gloss that looks an awfully lot like Stila Lip Glaze.

Hmm…

Naomi Watts: Her Best Hair?

November 18th, 2009 by Karen 9 Comments

naomi-watts-hair-poll

Born in Shoreham, England (September 28, 1968) but raised in Australia (where she met BFF Nicole Kidman at an audition), Naomi Ellen Watts has been cranking out films for almost 20 years.

Her love affair with the arts began in 1980 with a little thing called Fame — the movie that convinced her to pursue acting.

Starting with small roles in spectacular feasts of cinematic perfection, like the campy Children of the Corn IV, her star rose, eventually landing on the set of bona fide blockbusters (hello, King Kong?) and earning her an Academy Award nomination for 21 Grams.

Whether she’s working the red carpet or caring for her young son and baby daddy (Liev Shrieber), I think Naomi always looks great.

Which of Naomi's hairstyles do you like best?

Nonstick Lipgloss Greatest Hits

November 17th, 2009 by Karen 34 Comments

lipgloss-1

Happy Tuesday, ladies. 🙂 This morning, fellow beauty addict Toni finds herself in a sticky situation…

Hi Karen!

I’m on the hunt for a fabulous but very non-sticky lipgloss. I’ve enjoyed a Jesse’s Girl gloss I got at Rite Aid, but I’d love something with a little more color/pigmentation. I wonder what your readers call their favorite non-sticky lipglosses? Or can you make some suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Toni

Heya, Toni. Every girl needs a list of go-to non-sticky glosses. Here are some of my budget AND splurge-worthy faves. 🙂

  • Sally Hansen 12-Hour Lip Treatment ($6): Like a nonstick, vanilla-scented (but sans flavor) drugstore version of MAC Lipglass. Each tube packs may-jah color and shine, intense moisture, and lasts hours on my lips without budging one bit.
  • Sonia Kashuk Ultra Shine Sheer Lip Gloss ($9): BARGAIN ALERT! With a thin, non-stick formula that’s both taste- and fragrance-free, Sonia’s new $9 glosses feel surprisingly like $27 tubes of Chanel Aqualumiere Glossimer.
  • Philosophy Supergloss Lip Gloss SPF 15 ($17): If you dig uber-shiny, sun-protecting lipglosses that don’t feel sticky on your lips, think about giving the Supernatural Superglossies a try.
  • NARS Lipgloss in Supervixen ($24): Less sticky than MAC Lipglasses and Chanel Glossimers, NARS Supervixen feels light on my lips and doesn’t have a noticeable taste or smell.
  • Chanel Aqualumiere Lipgloss ($28): Boy, are these bad boys built to shine! All nine of the shades deliver loads of sheer, super shiny color. Chanel, ya done good!

Lipgloss lovahs, can you recommend any non-sticky formulations for Toni? Let’s get her out of this sticky situation.

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Nov. 16

November 16th, 2009 by Karen 93 Comments

kindness-is-everything

  1. Mood:
  2. Still a little out of it this morning, but I feel pretty good. I didn’t sleep well last night, so the old mental motor’s taking a while to warm up.

  3. Do you make your bed?
  4. Yup, every morning. It’s an easy way to start the day with a minor sense of accomplishment.

  5. Have you started holiday shopping?
  6. No! I need to start soon, though.

  7. Favorite fruit?
  8. I heart all kinds, but persimmons are really floating my boat right now, yum!

  9. Eyes/lips/cheeks:
  10. It’s a Clinique Black Tie Violets day for me.

  11. In what ways are you like your mother?
  12. We have very different personalities, but my mom and I are both total clean freaks.

  13. Do you like to dance?
  14. LOVE IT!

  15. Long or short nails?
  16. Long nails look so pretty to me, but I think shorter nails are just more practical. It’s a little harder to type with long nails.

  17. Outfit:
  18. I’m squeezing in a quick morning workout, so I’m covered in stretchy stuff that wicks — black Lululemon workout pants, a white tank top and black sweatshirt.

  19. Weekly goals:
  20. Eat sensibly (that means no more dark chocolate stars), work on managing my time better than last week, start a new filing system, research window treatments and do some planning for the holidays.

Good morning, ladies! Happy Monday.

I feel like I’ve been up forever… This morning around 4:30 Tabs went to work trying to open the cabinets under the sink, pawing and scratching at it for reasons unknown. I think he’s looking for CS Lewis’ magic wardrobe as a means to escape.

After I shouted at him to knock it off, he jumped on the bed, plopped on top of my head and started purring, completely ignoring the fact that I was mad. Typical.

Hope you have a great day today. While you tackle that first (or second) cup of coffee, take a second to check in with the Monday Poll. Just copy the list below, and paste it in the comments with your answers. 🙂

What’s the Best Glittery Product You’ve Ever Used?

November 15th, 2009 by Karen 33 Comments

best-glitter-product

How do you feel about glitter? Do you wear it much? I don’t rock it 24/7, but I will reach for a glittery nail polish, lipgloss or eyeliner when I’m feeling spunky (happens from time to time). 🙂

Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal Liner in Midnight Cowboy kinda changed my outlook on glitter. It turned glitter from something I liked into something I love.

By adding just the faintest sparkle, it became one of my staples for fun nights out. I’ll wear it as a shimmery golden liner along my upper lash line (where it stays like a mo’ fo’). The fine particles give it a sophisticated golden sparkle that lights up my face, but not in a cheesy, you’re-trying-too-hard way.

Some women look at glitter like they look at mini skirts — after a certain age, you just don’t go there anymore.

I don’t think so. Women of any age can sparkle. 🙂

What’s the best glittery product you’ve ever used, and what makes it great?

Tabs on the cover of Vogue

Ladies, can I ask a HUGE favor? Tabs got the cover of Vogue this month — I know! How cool is that? Well, I’d like some extra issues for keepsakes, but they’re sold out everywhere! 🙂 If you happen to see the issue on a newsstand, would you mind grabbing an extra copy for me? I’m just so proud…

What Were Your Best and Worst Beauty Experiences of the Week?

November 15th, 2009 by Karen 34 Comments

111509-best-and-worst-beauty

MY BEST:

Monday’s unusually great hair day! 🙂 Oh, and my skin finally cleared up after a two-week-long breakout.

MY WORST:

The moment of dead silence after I accidentally dropped my pan of MAC Blue Sorcery eyeshadow on the kitchen floor. It was like watching the Matrix, seeing the pan fall in slow motion, except that I was powerless to stop it… Poor thing didn’t stand a chance.

What were your best and worst beauty experiences of the week? Please share yours in the comments.
