It’s a Birthday Party! Makeup and Beauty Blog Turns One

February 20th, 2008 by Karen 95 Comments

Hey ya’ll,

Makeup and Beauty Blog turns one today! I’d love to throw a raging birthday party (complete with keg) for all of us here in my little apartment, but then readers from across the globe wouldn’t be able to attend. I don’t want anyone to feel left out, so since we can’t all be together in real life this time, let’s have an online birthday party instead! This party is strictly B.Y.O.B. — that’s bring your own beauty.

There will be plenty o’ dessert…

cupcake-1.jpg

And, of course, the DJ will be off the hook because what’s the point of a party without dancing?

fussytabby-dj-meow-mix-1.jpg

DJ Meow Mix is taking party song requests! Mine is Get Into the Groove by Madonna because it always makes me feel like shaking my booty.

How about a little eye candy?

Last, but not least, there’s party favors (my favorite part, woo hoo!)…
mac-fafi-party-favors.jpg

Let’s rock it out!

For the party, let me know…

1. What makeup you’ll be rockin’
2. What your party outfit looks like
3. What food/drink you’re bringing (it’s a potluck, haaay!)
4. Your favorite party song (DJ Meow Mix will play *anything*)
5. Who you’re bringing (significant other, friend, cat, dog, iguana, etc.)

Time Flies When You’re Having Fun

February 19th, 2008 by Karen 18 Comments

mbb-turns-one-year0-old.jpg

T-minus one day ’til the blog turns one, homies! Hope you stop by to celebrate with me on Wednesday. 🙂

This morning I slept in a lil’ bit (hallelujah) and caught up on some much needed Z’s. I also worked on a MAC Fafi tutorial featuring the Fafi Eyes 1 Eyeshadow Quad (hello, awesomeness) and the Nice Vice Paint Pot. Expect that later today!

Whatcha up to on this fine Tuesday?

Vegas Jackpot, Kinda

February 17th, 2008 by Karen 20 Comments

It appears I won’t be quitting my day job any time soon, ha! But winning a whopping $25 is better than nothing (that’s one Chanel Glossimer). I’m headed back home tonight, so tomorrow I’ll put up a post of my Barney’s New York in Vegas adventure. Hope you’re having a great weekend so far!

19 Pink Shoes: How to Kick Valentine’s Day Ass

February 14th, 2008 by Karen 42 Comments

Dear Cupid,

Happy Valentine’s Day, yo! I know you’re super busy today spreading love and all, but could I trouble you for a small favor? Would you please stop shooting me with those love arrows?? Each one makes me fall in love with a new pair of pink shoes!

First, I fell for these casual cuties…

Converse – All Star Core HI ($42)

Sugar Origami Batik Floral ($73.95)

Vans – Classic Slip-On ($44.95)

Dr. Martens 1460 W – Series ($113.95)

Then, my heart melted for strappy sandals…

Ralph Lauren – Amelie ($107.06)

Manolo Blahnik – Snake Print Sandal ($675)

But you couldn’t stop there, could you? You had to take it a *step* further, forcing me to fall in love with pink pumps!

Nine West – Luxious ($92.95)

Miss Sixty – Callista ($179.95)

Betsey Johnson – Clovis ($180)

Christian Louboutin – Covered Platform Peep-Toe ($760)

Dude, seriously. Stop toying with my heart! Point your love arrows someplace else. Might I suggest targeting a VH-1 reality TV dating show mansion like the Flavor of Love or Rock of Love abodes? There are plenty o’ people looking for love, you cherubic little bastard. Go wreak havoc with someone else’s heart!

Did Ya Ever Wonder…

February 13th, 2008 by Karen 31 Comments

…what a beauty book looks like before it actually ends up on the bookstore shelf?

Here’s a side view of a beauty book manuscript I’m helping to edit. I’ve been working on it all morning long. I can’t reveal the name of the author or the book title yet (it still doesn’t have a title), but ya’ll will be the first ones to get the skinny once it’s ready. 🙂

Anyway, after an hour or so of reading the manuscript, I started getting antsy, so I grabbed my pan of MAC Parrot eyeshadow and held it for comfort. Sidenote: Yes, I am a weirdo.

With MAC Parrot in one hand and the manuscript in the other, I experienced a sudden Makeup and Beauty Blog math moment (Insert clouds parting overhead and sunlight streaming through *here*)! The width of one 400-page beauty book manuscript is approximately equal to the width of one pan of MAC Parrot. The Pythagorean theorem it ain’t, but you know what they say — knowledge is power, yo.

Speaking of powerful knowledge, here’s a list of beauty books compiled from your recommendations in the comments the other day.

    Face Forward, by Kevyn Aucoin
Ultimate Makeovers: Expert Makeup Secrets for Stunning Transformations: Including Weddings and Special Occasions, by Robert Jones
Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, by Paula Begoun

Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty: Everything You Need to Look Pretty, Natural, Sexy & Awesome, by Bobbi Brown
Pretty: The Nylon Book of Beauty, by the Editors of Nylon Magazine

I’m psyched about expanding my makeup reference library. Thanks again for your recommendations!

How’s your morning been so far? Did ya snag some Fafi loot? Don’t be shy; share with the class.

Later this afternoon I plan to post a short tutorial on the Lancome Stylish Neutrals Eyeshadow Palette (aka my current obsession), so stay tuned!

9 Random Things: The Getting-to-Know-You Stage

February 11th, 2008 by Karen 76 Comments

He asks: “So, what do you do for fun?”

She replies: “Well, I like to go hiking, eat sushi, go dancing…”

Last week, during dinner at one of my favorite Thai restaurants, there was a couple sitting next to me who were clearly on a first date. My nosy ass couldn’t help but eavesdrop on their conversation between bites of yellow chicken curry (what can I say? I multi-task) and spring rolls. The boy hailed from Texas and liked indie rock; the girl liked to meditate and go hiking. They looked cute together, but there were several awkward moments of silence during which both of them sat there, obviously nervous, nibbling away at the Pad Thai for way too long.

It got me thinking about the-getting-to-know-you stage of friendships and relationships…

Friends

9 Random Things My Friends Know About Me

  1. I hate earthworms. No, I don’t just hate them. The very thought of earthworms makes me physically sick (I’m cringing right now). They are among the grossest things on the planet and disgust me on a great many levels. I hate how they squirm, how slimy they look, and I hate their nasty little turtlenecks.
  2. I am not a morning person.
  3. I was in a bad rollerblading accident involving a hill, a deaf elderly lady, a flock of slow moving ducks and a patch of ivy. What occurred was both startling and unpleasant.
  4. My first car was a red ’95 Honda Civic with black interior and NO AIR CONDITIONING.
  5. I can square dance.
  6. I don’t bowl.
  7. I sing in the car.
  8. I don’t like hot, spicy food but lurve extra garlic.
  9. I wore braces in junior high.

How about you? What do your best friends know about you?
