How to Apply MAC Naked Honey High-Light Powders: Application Tips from A MAC Pro

May 29th, 2009 by Karen 16 Comments

mac-naked-honey

What makes the MAC High-Light Powders so special?

If you’re looking for a flexible powder that can be worn on a wide range of skin tones, the new MAC High-Light Powders ($25) got yo back.

According to MAC Senior Artist Fatima Thomas, “Every skin tone, from your fairest porcelain girl to your ebony girl, can use one of these powders if not both.”

mac-naked-honey-honey-light

Embossed with a raised honey comb pattern (soo pretty!), these limited edition pressed powders will add a dreamy touch of pearly glow to your skin.

Both new shades — Honey Light (a light peachy gold with shimmer) and Golden Nectar (a muted, golden tan with shimmer) — go on sale next month as part of MAC’s Naked Honey collection (don’t miss Christine’s breakdown of the collection over at Temptalia.com).

At first I thought both of the powders were just straight up highlighters, but it turns out they’re more than meets the eye!

Fatima has some suggestions on ways to put them to use…

Fair-skinned beauties: Wear MAC High-Light Powder as a bronzer

A lot of bronzers have orange undertones that can look muddy on super pale skin.

“If you’ve ever seen somebody that’s really fair using an orangey bronzer,” says Fatima, “you know what a hot mess that can turn out to be.”

Fatima thinks pale beauties should try using the MAC Naked Honey High-Light Powders as bronzers to add dimension to their skin and to sculpt the face.

Unlike other bronzers, both the Honey Light and Golden Nectar colors have olive undertones, which look natural on even the lightest shades of skin.

Brush recommendation: MAC 168
When applying the MAC Naked Honey High-Light Powders as a bronzer, Fatima likes the MAC 168 Large Angled Contour Brush ($32). With soft bristles and a slightly angled brush head, it effortlessly hugs the contours of the cheeks.

Application tips
Dust the High-Light Powder along the hair line, back behind the ears and then along the lower jaw line. To finish, sculpt the cheek bones by first placing the brush next to the ear and then sweeping it along the curve beneath the apple of the cheek.

Medium-to-dark-skinned cuties: Wear MAC High-Light Powder as a highlighter

For girls with darker skin tones, Fatima likes using MAC High-Light Powder as a highlighter to brighten the skin, enhance bone structure and to create a sculpted look.

Brush recommendation: MAC 224 or 225
She recommends either the MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush ($28) or the MAC 225 Tapered Blending Brush ($36). Both have soft fibers and fluffy brush heads, making them great for the precise application of sheer layers of color.

Application tips
Try applying High-Light Powder on the skin where light would naturally bounce/reflect off the face.

  • Lips: Pat a bit of High-Light Powder atop the divot in the upper lip for a sexy, pouty look.
  • Nose: Apply High-Light Powder to the bridge of the nose, and avoid applying highlighters of any kind to the ball or the tip of the nose. That’s a sure fire way to make a nose look greasy.
  • Eyes: A layer of High-Light Powder applied to the browbone, and then applied between the eyes and inside the inner corners of the eyes brightens and opens ’em up.
  • Cheeks: Sweep High-Light Powder on top of the cheek bones for a sculpted and look and to lift the cheeks.

One last note on brushes: When it comes to applying the High-Light Powders, less is more.

“Most people I find are heavy handed when they’re doing their own makeup,” says Fatima. “They tend to pick up way too much product, and then they over-apply and don’t blend.”

Fatima suggests applying these powders with very soft, fluffy brush heads like the MAC 168, 224 and 225, which deposit very little color, helping you avoid the over-application trap.

“You have to work really hard to overload these brushes. They allow you to get a softer, blended effect with less effort.”

The more I hear about MAC Naked Honey, the more I can’t wait for June 11! What do you think so far?

Friday, WOOT!

A couple new movies start today, and the two I’d really like to see may not have a lot in common. The first is Pixar’s Up, and the second’s the new Sam Raimi horror flick called Drag Me To Hell, which only popped up on my radar screen yesterday when I noticed the 95% it got on rottentomatoes.com, YES!

Because Fridays are extra cool, I thought it would be nice to end the workweek with a MAC Style Warrior giveaway.

The prize

One lucky lady will win a bottle of Violet Fire Nail Lacquer from the MAC Style Warrior collection (an $11 value).

Don’t you love the name — Violet Fire? Kudos to the person who came up with that one.

MAC Naked Honey Body Wash: Warm, Soothing and a Touch Sweet

May 27th, 2009 by Karen 22 Comments

052609-mac-naked-honey-bodw-wash

Introducing MAC Naked Honey Body Wash ($19.50), one of the new body care products being released with the upcoming collection (arrives June 11). 🙂

Now close your eyes…

Picture the pages of a Pottery Barn catalog. A tranquil bedroom, dark, except for the flickering light from dozens of honey-scented candles. In the center of the room — a beautiful four-poster bed with fresh, soft cotton sheets covered in lavender and jasmine petals…

That’s the way I think MAC Naked Honey Body Wash smells to me — warm, soothing, and a touch sweet.

In the shower, the gel lathers into a rich foam that rinses completely away. It leaves my skin feeling lightly hydrated and smelling sweet like honey for hours.

It contains something MAC refers to as bio-converted honey, moisturizing waxes derived from lavender, narcissus and jasmine flowers; as well as the extract of the blue agave plant (the same plant used to make tequila, mezcal and pulque) to moisturize and cleanse the skin.

The body wash joins a few other body care products in the 13-piece Naked Honey collection like a skin salve ($18.50), a hand and body cream ($22.50) and a fragrance (called Creations, $22.50).

MAC Naked Honey Buzz Lipglass Lip Look

May 26th, 2009 by Karen 45 Comments

MAC Naked Honey — Buzz Lipglass

I’m totally buzzing over the upcoming MAC Naked Honey collection. The 13-piece release, set to launch June 11, features eye, lip, face and body products with colors and scents inspired by — yup, you guessed it — honey!

That’s honey as in bees, not honey as in the cheesy Jessica Alba movie, LOL!

This afternoon I previewed one of the three new Lipglasses, Buzz ($14). It’s a warm, shimmery burnt orange-copper that looks pretty good with a tan.

And even if you’re lighter (or darker) than me but wear warm copper lip shades well, you just might love it, too.

Flecks of gold, red, purple and green micro-glitter in Buzz sparkle like whoa when the light hits ’em just right. Hello, hotness!

Like all MAC Lipglasses, Buzz feels sticky on the lips and has a faint vanilla scent.

MAC likes to launch warmer color collections around this time of year (like last year’s Neo Sci Fi — LOVE!); if you like the way you look in warm colors, keep your eyes peeled for Naked Honey.

Where the heck’s a time machine when you need one? Hurry up and get here, June 11! I can’t wait to see the rest of the collection. 🙂

Queen Bees, what do ya think about Buzz?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. This isn’t MAC Naked Honey related, but it’s equally awesome.

MAC Trip and MAC Travel Exclusives: Order by Phone from DFS Galleria in Hawaii

May 24th, 2009 by Karen 26 Comments

mac-trip-1
The MAC counter at DFS Galleria in Waikiki

Fellow MACaholics, do you remember those drool-worthy MAC Trip palettes we talked about last month? They’ve been notoriously hard to find, right?

Some readers have tracked ’em down at airports and other places, but I never expected to find them a block from Waikiki Beach!

There’s a MAC counter inside the massive DFS Galleria (duty-free store) at 330 Royal Hawaiian Avenue, a Costco-sized makeup Mecca that caters primarily to international travelers from Japan.

But the store is wide open to everyone, and the MAC counter carries most of the current MAC Travel Exclusives, including several of the new spring and summer MAC Trip Palettes.

I saw these from the spring/summer Trip collection…

  • 5 Cool Eyes Palette, $40
  • 5 Warm Eyes Palette, $40
  • Cool Lips Palette, $23
  • Warm Lips Palette, $23

A MAC Wedding Makeover

May 20th, 2009 by Karen 15 Comments

In this post Audrey from Pop Culture & Make-Up Addict shares a bridesmaid-inspired makeup look featuring MAC Cosmetics.

mbb_face-final

My makeup addiction started about a year ago, so I’m still learning which colors go with what.

When I had the honor of being a bridesmaid for the wedding of one of my best friends, I thought it would be fun to visit my local MAC salon for a makeup consultation.

Our dresses were a bright fuschia, and I wasn’t sure what eyeshadow colors to wear. I had the makeup consultation done a week before the wedding to give myself enough time to play around with everything and decide on my look.

The MAC makeup artist recommended the following…

  • Eyes: Shale on the lid, Seedy Pearl as the highlight, Blackberry in the crease, Macroviolet fluidline on the lash lines
  • Cheeks: Stark Naked blush
  • Lips: Plum Dandy lipstick with Morning Glory lustreglass (can’t remember the lip pencil)

I definitely liked her cheek and lip recommendations, so I picked up those… I liked the eyes, too, but thought they were a little too purple and wanted something more neutral.

With the artist’s help, I finally decided on the following look for my eyes. It allowed me to use some colors I already had in my collection.

  • Seedy Pearl on the inner third of the lid
  • Shale on the outer two thirds of the lid
  • Satin Taupe in the crease, outer V, and lower lash line
  • Yogurt as the highlight
  • Phloof! in the inner tear duct and a touch in the arch under the brow

Here’s how I looked on the day of the wedding!

5 Drugstore Mascaras, 5 Days

May 20th, 2009 by Karen 25 Comments

Today blogger Caroline K. takes us through five days of testing with five popular drugstore mascaras.

So, have you heard the one about us being in a recession? We’re all saving money where we can.

There are even things like the Lipstick Index. Apparently, when times are bad, cosmetics sales go up.

Who knew?

In my case, I am being more conservative with my makeup purchases, which is why I’m looking closely at drugstore mascara.

With my favorite, Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes, costing $28 a pop, it was time to return to my college days. I wanted to find the greatest drugstore mascara ever sold, so from Monday-Friday I played with five mascaras over five days.

Naked lashes

no-makeup

First, I present you with my no makeuped eye, which is maybe the scariest thing I have ever posted on the Internet. I’m going with that first so you have nowhere to go but up with your opinion of my eyeball.

For the following photos, I wasn’t wearing any makeup other than each mascara. I stuck to the included mascara wands — no additional brushes, combs or eyelash curlers. Oh, and these are all double coats.

Now on to the fun!

Monday: L’Oreal Bare Naturale, $10

monday-barenaturale

Monday was L’Oreal’s new mineral mascara, Bare Naturale ($10). I clearly hadn’t figured out the lighting thing yet … but that’s neither here nor there.

I like this mascara. It’s not heavy or goopy and lasts all day long but is still easy to remove in the evening.

The look isn’t anything dramatic, but it does add definition. Great Saturday afternoon mascara, not that I wear special makeup when I want to look like I’m not wearing any. Oh, no, not me. 🙂

Tuesday: Maybelline Lash Stiletto, $8

tuesday-lashstiletto

Tuesday, I tried the new Maybelline Lash Stiletto ($8).

Maybelline really went all out with their packaging, and this bad boy actually looks like a stiletto heel.

I really like this mascara. It gives a lot of length, but I feel like it’s missing that added volume bump I need.

The mascara itself is super glossy and would take some getting used to, but my biggest complaint is the brush. It’s a little too wiry and pokey for my taste. Sure, I think it makes my eyelashes look terrific, but my lash line got a little banged up in the process.

Wednesday: Cover Girl Lash Exact, $8

wednesday-lashexact

Wednesday, I moved on to Cover Girl’s Lash Exact ($8) in the purple tube.

I’m not going to lie; those new pokey plastic Cover Girl brushes really freak me out. They look like some sort of medieval torture device but in fun new colors, so I was totally surprised by how much I liked the way they made my lashes look.

They were stunningly long. I could have used a comb to separate them a little more, but I was in heaven.

Unfortunately, as the day wore on, Lash Exact let me down. By noon it was getting a little flakey, and by dinner it seemed to have disappeared.

Thursday: Maybelline Sky High Curves, $7

thursday-skyhigh

But Thursday was another day, and I decided to try my old standby. Before I moved to the Givenchy mascara last year, I was a Maybelline Sky High Curves ($7) girl.

Would it welcome me back into its old embrace? Would I still love it after working with perfection all these months?

I have to say, I did.

This mascara actually does curl my lashes, which I have to say weirds me out, but it gives terrific length and volume.

The brush is easy to use, but it seems like Maybelline may have changed the formula while I was away from the product because it tended to get a little clumpy with my eyelashes leaning toward the spidery side of the spectrum.

A little brushwork took care of the problem, though, and I looked good for the day! Oh, and the waterproof formula lasted through a marathon crying session during Grey’s Anatomy, so good work, Maybelline!

Friday: Cover Girl Lash Blast Luxe, $9

friday-lashblast

Finally, it was Friday, and I was ready for the weekend. I tried Cover Girl’s new Lash Blast Luxe ($9), which I had saved for Friday because of its OMG shimmer! Nothing says “weekend mascara” like shimmer, and I was excited to see what it could do.

And then, nothing.

Not only does it lack shimmer, but it doesn’t have much else either. I think it may darken my eyelashes a little, but that’s certainly not anything to write home about.

This was a big disappointment for me, and after Drew Barrymore’s eyelashes looked so great in the commercial…

So it seems like I’m sticking with my old standby, Sky High Curves. 🙂 I think in general Maybelline knows what they’re doing in the lash department. With money so tight these days, if I can still look fabulous on a budget, I’m all for it.

CVS, here I come!

This post was written by blogger Caroline K. She wasn’t always a makeup girl, but a marketing internship at Seventeen magazine changed all that. The editorial girls took pity on her poor soul and taught her about brushes, eyeliner and lip gloss; she’s never looked back.

MAC Style Warriors Swatches and Pictures

Yesterday I spent about an hour at a Nordstrom store here on Oahu getting familiar with MAC’s new Style Warriors collection. It goes on sale in stores nationwide in a few days (May 21), but Nordies is taking pre-orders right now and has the products available for display on counter (if they’re not out, you may have to ask).

If you can’t wait, MAC has the products, at least most of them, for sale online, but they haven’t turned on their Style Warriors collection page yet, so you’ll have to dig around through their product sections like those for Eyes and Lips to find ’em.
