MAC Viva Glam? Yes Ma’am! A Hump Day Face of the Day Using the Too Faced Sugar & Spice Palette, the NARS Virtual Domination Cheek Palette and MAC Viva Glam

October 8th, 2014 by Karen 13 Comments

Too Faced Sugar and Spice Palette on my eyes and MAC Viva Glam V Lipglass on my lips

OK, so I’m enjoying an Amy’s Mexican Casserole Bowl and watching Gilmore Girls last night when I kindasorta FREAKED THE EFF OUT. One of the main characters in the show, Lorelei Gilmore (the mom half of the Gilmore duo), was getting her best friend Sookie ready for a date, doing her hair, putting on her makeup — all of that good stuff a beauty BFF does for her gal pals. Anywho, when she’s ready to apply Sookie’s lipstick, she calls out to her daughter Rory (the other half of the Gilmore Girls) downstairs to bring up “Viva Glam.” Yes! THE Viva Glam. She doesn’t say the word “MAC,” but when she holds the lipstick up to Sookie’s lips, you can clearly see the tube, and it’s definitely MAC.

Witty banter? Endless cups of coffee? MAC makeup references? This just might be the best show ever. 🙂

I still had Viva Glam on my mind this morning when I was getting ready, so I took out my favorite version, Viva Glam V Lipglass, and paired it with a cool-toned smokey brown and peach eye using the new Too Faced Sugar & Spice Palette ($39, available now), and the new NARS Virtual Domination Cheek Palette.

Also, just for fun, and to see how the eyes would look with a more dramatic lip, I swapped out Viva Glam V with the new Viva Glam Rihanna 2 Lipstick and Lipglass…

Wow! I actually really like the bolder lip combo.

Incidentally, the first time I wore the Rihanna 2 lippies separately, I felt they looked a little too stark on me. Then I tried them together and came around. Now I’m lovin’ that deep, sparkling pinkish mauve.

As for my cheeks, I’m wearing the new NARS Virtual Domination Cheek Palette ($65, from the new holiday collection). It comes with three blushes (Sex Fantasy, Deep Throat and Final Cut), a highlighter (Miss liberty) and a bronzer (good ol’ Laguna), available exclusively at Sephora starting November 1.

The MAC Keepsakes Holiday Collection Brush Kits: In Extra Dimension, Studio and Mineralize

October 7th, 2014 by Karen 10 Comments

MAC Keespakes Brush Kits

For the most part, the MAC limited edition brushes I’ve tried feel scratchier, for lack of a better word, than their counterparts in the permanent line, and just don’t last as long. I’ve had brushes literally fall apart on me in less than a year — like, where the ferrule comes unglued from the handle when I’m in the middle of putting on my makeup.

So, as cute as they are (and they’re usually so. damn. cute.), I approach them with a dash of skepticism.

I’m still surprised sometimes, though. I had great experiences with a couple of the limited edition brushes from the Alluring Aquatic collection, so you never can tell. Reason enough to have high hopes for the new brushes in the Keepsakes Brush Kits, each of which comes with a cute bag and four or five brushes.

The MAC Keepsakes In Extra Dimension Brush Kit

MAC Keepsakes In Extra Dimension Brush Kit
MAC Keepsakes In Extra Dimension Brush Kit, $52.50 US/$63 CAD

This one contains…

  • 127SE Split Fibre Face Brush
  • 128SE Split Fibre Cheek Brush
  • 234SE Split Fibre Eye Blending Brush
  • 235SE Split Fibre All Over Eye Brush

I’ve been using these brushes a lot over the past few days — these and the ones in the other Keepsakes collection kits — and I have to say, the brushes in two of the bags, the Mineralize one and In Extra Dimension — seem a little better built than usual for MAC’s holiday fare. The bristles feel pretty soft.

The MAC Keepsakes Mineralize Brush Kit

MAC Keepsakes Mineralize Brush Kit, $52.50 US/$63 CAD

And this one…

  • 187SE Duo Fibre Face Brush
  • 130SE Short Duo Fibre Brush
  • 286SE Duo Fibre Tapered Blending Brush
  • 287SE Duo Fibre Eye Shadow Brush

The Mineralize Brushes, in particular, feel just as good as some of my favorites in MAC’s permanent line. All four of them apply powder and cream products like pros, and if I were to recommend one of these brush kits over all the others, this would definitely be the one.

Today’s Makeup: MAC Ruby Woo, I’m Into You! The MAC Keepsakes Red Lip Bag and MAC Keepsakes Smoky Eye Bag

October 7th, 2014 by Karen 21 Comments

MAC Keepsakes Smoky Eye and Red Lip
Wearing makeup from the new MAC Keepsakes holiday collection

I got Ruby Woo’d today, man! I had an early morning meeting, so no glitter or falsies. Just a reliable, classic combo of cat eyes and red lips using the contents of the new MAC Keepsakes Smoky Eye Bag ($39.50/$47.50 CAD) and Keepsakes Red Lip Bag ($39.50 US/$47.50 CAD).

Red lips and cat eyes — it’s hard to go wrong with that combo. There are endless ways to tweak and work it.

I usually use a gel or liquid liner for my feline eyes, but I was running late today. (No way! That never happens, haha.) I couldn’t risk getting into a Greco-Roman wrestling match with my eyeliner, so I went with a softer, smokier version by lining my upper lash lines with a black eye pencil, and then smoking out the edges with a shimmery, blackish gray eyeshadow to create the cat eye shape.

MAC MAC Keepsakes Smoky Eye Bag Eye of the Day

Sometimes I prefer the softer, less formal look I can get with the eye pencil-eyeshadow combo…and sometimes it’s just quicker and easier than trying to control a gel or liquid liner.

MAC Keepsakes Red Lip Bag

It being the season and all, I paired the eyes with a red lip, reaching into the MAC Keepsakes Red Lip Bag for MAC Ruby Woo Lip Liner, Ruby Woo Matte Lipstick and Ruby Woo Lipglass.

Oh! If you haven’t danced with bluish red Ruby Woo yet, you MUST. It’s one of those MAC reds you have to try at least once, ideally when you’re going someplace fun (no, not a work meeting…although that would also work).

The MAC Keepsakes Red Lip Bag and Smoky Eye Bag arrive online with the rest of the Keepsakes collection October 19, before showing up at North American MAC stores and counters October 23 through December 18 (and at all international MAC locations this November).

The MAC Heirloom Mix Collection: For the Cool, Glitter-Loving Ladies of the Royal Court

October 6th, 2014 by Karen 24 Comments

MAC Heirloom Mix Collection
Wearing pieces from the new MAC Heirloom Mix holiday collection, available online starting October 19, and coming to MAC stores and counters October 23 (internationally November 6)

Here’s a breakdown of the above look…
On my eyes I’m wearing the MAC Pressed Pigments in Victorian Plum (lower crease, inner lid, outer V and lower lash lines), Nostalgic (center of the lid), Nobel Descent (upper crease) and Regal Affair (inner corner); MAC Kohl Power Eye Pencil in Feline on my water lines, and upper and lower lash lines; MAC Fluidline in Dark Majesty on my upper lash lines; Eylure No 080 False lashes and the Tom Ford Brow Sculptor in Espresso.

In my brows, that’s Anastasia Clear Brow Gel.

On my cheeks, I’m wearing MAC Mineralize Blush in Modest Blush on the apples, MAC Sheer Mystery Powder in Deep Dark just beneath the apples to contour, and the Hourglass Ambient Powders in Radiant Light and Incandescent Light (from the Ambient Lighting Palette) mixed together to highlight my upper cheekbones.

Lips are MAC Matte Lipstick in Salon Rouge.

And on my face, I’m wearing Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Pore Minimizing Foundation Primer, Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluid in Chai, Dior Diorskin Nude Concealer in 003 Sable/Sand and YSL Touche Eclat in 4.5.

Necklace is by H&M, and the earrings are the Climbing Vines Earrings by Kristin Perry.

Last weekend my brother came to visit and stayed the night, and, of course, as usual, I was the couch commando (also known as remote hog). I was flipping through Netflix with the remote in my hand when I asked, “Who wants to watch The Duchess?”

Dead silence.

None of the boys — El Hub, my bro or Tabs — were into watching Keira Knightley, who plays the Duchess of Devonshire, parade around in a huge wig. Big shock.

I actually really dig regal movies. Anything with royal intrigue and stylish ladies of the court — the kind who wear wigs so tall that they touch the candles in the chandeliers and catch fire (’cause you know I’m all about the big hair! And flames!), and the painted moles, and the big dresses. 🙂

If I were a royal, you better believe I’d be the gal with the tallest, biggest, most flaming wig (assuming someone quickly put it out), because then my hair would sparkle like the MAC Heirloom Mix collection.

MAC Heirloom Mix
MAC Heirloom Mix collection, available online starting October 19, and coming to stores and MAC counters October 23 (internationally at all MAC locations November 6). Not pictured: Nail Lacquers in Just Jewels, Richly Endowed and Queen’s Honor; Eye Kohl in Tarnish (swatch here) and Eye Kohl in Prunella (swatch here)

If you’ve been following MAC for a while, you probably know how much they like to go big when it comes to flashy finishes in holiday collections, and true to form, there’s a lot of sparkle and frost in Heirloom Mix. Glitter is practically everywhere in the 30-piece limited edition collection.

MAC Heirloom Mix: My 2-minute overview

  • Cool-toned colors — Color temp-wise, this collection leans cool, and it’s heavy on cool-toned grays, blues and violets.
  • Glitter and frost — SO MUCH OF THIS. It comes through strong in the Pressed Pigments (ooh gurl…we got drama!!), the Loose Glitters, Cremesheeen Glasses and one of the Nail Lacquers. When I was doing the look for the top pic, I felt like I had more glitter on my face than a Johnny Weir ice skating costume (remember his holiday collection with MAC? Good times!). For serious, while I love glitter, I’m a little cranky about the Pressed Pigments, but I’ll get to that in a minute…
  • Lipstick love — If you’re only planning to take one thing home form the collection, let it be one of the bright, bold lipsticks in red, berry, plum or pink (the vibe I’m getting: MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show, Part II). They’re my favorite part of the collection.

OK, so, the Pressed Pigment drama…

MAC Heirloom Mix Pressed Pigments clockwise from the lower left: Regal Affair, Nostalgic, Noble Descent, Victorian Plum, Enchantment, Modern Majesty, Noblesse Oblige and Prim and Proper
Clockwise from the lower left: Regal Affair, Nostalgic, Noble Descent, Victorian Plum, Enchantment, Modern Majesty, Noblesse Oblige and Prim and Proper

For the pics in this post I’m wearing a few of the eight Pressed Pigments from the collection. They were the first pieces in the release that caught my eye.

MAC Heirloom Mix Pressed Pigments clockwise from the lower left: Regal Affair, Nostalgic, Noble Descent and Victorian Plum
Pressed Pigments clockwise from the lower left: Regal Affair, Nostalgic, Noble Descent and Victorian Plum

Now, I’ve used Pressed Pigments before, and I’ve liked them. The others I used were glittery and fun and a pretty good deal, too. You got a big 0.1-oz. pan for $21 — double the size of a regular MAC Eye Shadow.

MAC Heirloom Mix Pressed Pigments clockwise from the left: Enchantment; Modern Majesty; Noblesse Oblige; and Prim and Proper
Pressed Pigments clockwise from the left: Enchantment, Modern Majesty, Noblesse Oblige, and Prim and Proper

But the Pressed Pigments in Heirloom Mix are teeny, tiny. They cost $19.50 each for 0.04 ounces, which is about 20 percent smaller than a regular MAC Eye Shadow and less than half the size of the other Pressed Pigments I’ve used, which hold 0.1 ounces of Pressed goodness each.

Can’t say I’m a fan of brands charging the same price or more for less product, but I’ve been seeing a lot of that lately. *grinds teeth*

Lipstick love

MAC Heirloom Mix Lipsticks from the left: Tribalist, No Faux Pas, Sparks of Romance, Rebel and Salon Rouge
Lipsticks from the left: Tribalist, No Faux Pas, Sparks of Romance, Rebel and Salon Rouge

As for the lipsticks, I like. 🙂 Whether you have cool- or warm-toned skin, these should do ya. No sparkle here. Just rich, intense shades of berry, pink, red and plum. Your classic holiday colors.

I really dig No Faux Pas, the hot pink (big surprise). It’s a refreshing pop of color among the darker reds and berries we see a lot in holiday collections.

And then there’s Sparks of Romance, the red Matte. It’s a vintage, classic red that neither leans blue nor yellow. This one, I think, will look great on just about everyone.

The overall collection: is it fit for a royal?

Well, sure, for a lady of the court who wears cool tones well. I think there are some lovely lipsticks here, but, truth be told, about the entire collection, my warm-toned heart isn’t fluttering.

Today’s Makeup: We’ll Always Have Paris

October 3rd, 2014 by Karen 23 Comments

MAC Gravitas Palette and MAC Audacious Lipstick

I’ve had Paris on my mind today, but not for the usual “Paris is terrific!” reasons. It’s because of a disturbing dream I had last night.

I dreamt that I was in Paris staying at the Hôtel Plaza Athénée, which is the same hotel Carrie stayed at in the final season of Sex and City when she went to Paris to live with that art gallery dude.

Anyway, instead of sipping champagne and stuffing my face with macarons and twirling around in custom Chanel couture in my fabulous dream hotel room (which would have a view of the Eiffel tower, of course), I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off because the city was being bombed.

Yeah, that’s right.

Homegirl finally has a dream about the City of Lights, but instead of having tea with Karl Lagerfeld and Choupette or strolling down the Champs-Élysées alongside Tabs, who of course would be wearing a little red beret (I know you can picture it), she’s stuck in a five-star hotel as bombs rain down on the city.

I can’t remember why I was in the room, but all of the windows were wide open, and I could see explosions going off in the distance.

It was terrifying!

Right before I woke up from the dream, I was running around turning off all of the lights, because I didn’t want anyone outside to know that I was in the room by myself. 😯

So the moral of this story is to not eat too much chocolate before bed…

El Hub and I visited Paris years ago, right before he asked me to marry him, and I fell head over heels in love, both with him and the city.

I hope, I hope, I hope I can go back to Paris one of these days. Maybe by then Tabs will have given me a raise, and I’ll have saved enough to go to the Chanel store and buy myself a handbag. In Paris. Then every time I carried it, I’d remember that day.

All this is to say that I was in the mood to wear makeup today that I could see myself wearing to the Chanel store — red lips and black cat liner, with softly sculpted lids.

The MAC Brooke Shields Gravitas Palette Is a Dignified Diva Strengthened by Neutrals

October 2nd, 2014 by Karen 29 Comments

MAC Brooke Shields Gravitas Palette
The MAC Brooke Shields Gravitas Palette ($85), from the MAC Brooke Shields collection

I can say with the utmost sincerity that I have never been this excited to wear MAC Soft Brown.

And I love Soft Brown! It’s one of my all-time greatest hits, most loved staples, and I’ve been wearing it for years. I’m always happy to see Soft Brown staring back at me as I get ready in the morning.

Now, though? Next to so many other dope-@ss neutral eyeshadows in the $85 MAC Brooke Shields Gravitas palette? The impossible has happened: I like Soft Brown even more.

MAC Brooke Shields Gravitas Palette

“But,” you might be thinking, “slow your roll, sweet thang.” We’re talking about an $85 palette. An $85 neutral palette. Another neutral palette.

I know, you’re right. More neutrals, and $85 is a lot, but it’s half what MAC usually charges for their 15-pan palettes (those are $160).

MAC Brooke Shields Gravitas Palette

Here’s the thing, though: if Gravitas were a gymnast, it would have perfect poise and balance. It would easily win a gold medal.

And to attempt an even stranger metaphor, if there were such a thing as an eyeshadow palette soulmate, Brook Shields would be mine, because I love almost everything about Gravitas. I feel like, eyeshadow-wise, it has everything I need.

Well…almost everything, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

MAC Brooke Shields Gravitas Palette

Definitely, Gravitas contains great everyday basic shades, like Soft Brown, Shroom, Carbon and Satin Taupe, but that’s far from everything it has to offer. It also has an interesting combination of warm- and cool-toned khaki, plum, gold and pink shades, which together with the basics, open up a world of elegant eye look possibilities that don’t necessarily involve me looking like I’m wearing a sh*t-ton of makeup at lunch on a Tuesday.

Bottom Row: Shroom, Persuade, Plummed, Lofty and Pepper

And the addition of the darker gray, black and purple eyeshadows gives Gravitas even more flexibility. When I want to dress up like a sparkly disco roller diva and ride my glittery unicorn Giselle, I can apply one these colors in the crease, the outer corner and on my lower lash line. Then just add a pair of falsies and go. 🙂

The MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Collection: Even If You Don’t Know the Show, the Swanky Red Lips Still Make This Picture a Party

September 30th, 2014 by Karen 41 Comments

MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show Collection

The place: biology class, James Logan High School, Union City, California.

The time: the early 1990s…

Karen’s head pulsed as she thought about how far behind she was on memorizing her SAT vocabulary. “Seriously,” she said to Jen, “I would love to go, but I can’t. I have too much SAT stuff to get through.”

Jen crinkled the Snickers wrapper and tossed it at Karen. “Party pooper,” Jen said. “You’re gonna regret this someday. Mark my words.”

You’re probably right, Karen thought, agreeing to herself, even though she didn’t know anything at all about this Rocky Horror Picture Show business. What was it anyway? A movie? A play?

MAC Rocky Horror Collection boxes

Honestly, though, looking back on it now, truer words were never spoken. After all these years, I wish I’d said yes to Jen that night, and all of the third-wheeling and vegetable-throwing I later found out I’d missed.

On top of that, if I’d actually gone with Jen to see the show, I’d probably understand the references in the new MAC Rocky Horror Picture Show collection better, because right now…I don’t understand them at all.

Not one bit. 🙂

The limited edition 21-piece release of new and re-promoted products is available now online and coming to MAC stores and counters October 2 though October 30.

For someone totally unfamiliar with the Rocky Horror Picture Show, like yours truly, overlooking the fact that I don’t get any of the inside jokes, I still think the collection is worth checking out…even though, admittedly, it’s not moving me as much as MAC Brooke Shields does.

MAC Rocky Horror Lipstick in Strange Journey
Wearing MAC Lipstick in Strange Journey, from the new Rocky Horror Picture Show collection available now online

Along with some dramatic red lip colors, there’s also a really intense burgundy pigment (so pretty!), loose glitters, a palette of six cool-toned eyeshadows and a couple of Greasepaint Sticks, among other things, but none of those others stand out to me like the four red lipsticks. For me, the red lippies, particularly Strange Journey, the smooth matte yellowish red, with its 1940s pinup sensibilities (looks epic in pictures!), are the stars of this launch.

Back to the early ’90s…

Karen stood by her locker, her biology book and binder in hand, wondering if she had time to touch up her lipstick before her first class. She looked up at the clock in the hallway, realized that she was about 30 seconds from being late, and slammed her locker door.

One day, she thought, I will get my lipstick on before the bell rings, and on that day, angels will sing. She sprinted to class and slipped into her seat, just as the bell rang.

Her best friend Jen sat next to her. She peeled open a Snickers bar, broke it in two, and handed Karen the bigger piece. “Breakfast of champions,” Jen said.

“Thanks,” Karen said, as she took a bite. She fished her homework (“mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell!”) out of her binder, and watched her teacher, Mr. Greene, dressed in his usual uniform of a rumpled short-sleeve shirt and khakis, shuffle papers at the front of class. Crossing the room he almost tripped over his own feet. Someone please get that man some coffee, Karen thought.

She waited for Mr. Greene’s customary greeting. “Class,” he eventually said, “why don’t you spend five minutes double-checking your homework while I set up, yes?”

That was their cue to start chatting.

Jen lightly tapped her pencil on the side of her desk and leaned in. “James Trejo asked me out this morning,” she said.

Karen wrinkled her nose. “You mean James Trejo from drama class? Like on a date? Ew.”

“What do you mean, ‘Ew’?” Jen said, scratching at the fading screen print of Bart Simpson on her jeans. “He’s kind of cute.”

“He creeps me out,” Karen replied. “I’ve caught him staring at my neck a few times.” She paused. “It was odd. And why does he always wear vests?”

Jen’s eyes went wide as she flashed her million-dollar smile. “He asked me to go to see Rocky Horror Picture Show with him on Saturday.”

Jen waited as if expecting a response.

Eventually, Karen realized what Jen was asking. “Jen?” Karen said. “Nuh-uh. No, no, no.”

“Please?” Jen begged. “Please, please, please!”

Karen shook her head. “No way. Nope. You’re gonna have to find another chaperone. I’m not doing it again. Why don’t you ask Cindy?”

“I already did,” Jen said. “She’s going skiing this weekend.”

“So,” Karen said, raising an eyebrow, “I’m your sloppy seconds?”

“Well…” Jen replied, “Look, all you have to do is come to dinner and the movie. Please? You know my parents won’t let me go out unless there’s someone responsible with me. I’d do it for you!”

A Model of Elegant Versatility: The new MAC Brooke Shields Collection, Available Now

September 26th, 2014 by Karen 17 Comments

MAC Brooke Shields Collection
Wearing the new MAC Brooke Shields collection, available now online, and coming to MAC stores and counters October 2, 2014

If you ever wished upon a star (or begged the tooth fairy in a note scrawled on pink Hello Kitty stationary) for a pair of Calvin Klein jeans in the early ’80s, chances are you remember the phenomenon that is/was Brooke Shields, the face of MAC’s latest collaborations.

As a kid in the ’80s, I was obsessed with Brooke’s long brown hair, in part because I was rocking the same short, feathered hairdo that most of my grownup uncles were wearing at the time.

Ugh!

I wanted Brooke’s long, flowing hair more than almost anything…except a Hello Kitty lunchbox.

MAC Brooke Shields Collection packaging
Eight of 14 pieces in the MAC Brooke Shields collection

If you weren’t around back then and never saw The Blue Lagoon, you may still recognize Brooke as the woman who elegantly poses on La-Z-Boy sofas (not gonna lie, I kind of want a teal one!) or shows off her Foster Grant sunglasses.

Homegirl seems to do a lot of endorsements, and a little bit of everything else. Among other things, she’s an actress, model (In 1980, at 14, she was the youngest fashion model ever to appear on the cover of Vogue), spokeswoman and purveyor of big brows.

And now, a MAC collaborator.

I’ve been eagerly awaiting Brooke’s 14-piece limited edition collection (a mix of new shades and re-promotes, now available online) because, hello! — neutral eyeshadows.

There are so many in this release, but before you throw that suspicious side eye at me, hear me out. These neutrals are totally fun. Buttery golden browns, neutral golds, beiges and grays, that kind of thing. The collection also features some purply taupes, bronzes and olives, to turn things up if you want, and for cheeks and lips, we get soft corals and warm, orangey reds.

I think what we have here is definitely a mellower look for MAC, and it may not appeal to every MAC crowd. Those who hunger for the edgier collaborations with Rihanna/Lorde/[INSERT TRENDY MUSIC ARTIST HERE], might not be impressed. Like, if you want a new bold green eyeshadow to wear with your black pleather and whip on stage somewhere, or a matte black lipstick to go with your Katy Perry-style bra that shoots out string cheese, then you may not be into this.

But maybe you will.

Gosh, I love, LOVE this release. Many of the pieces feel timeless and easy to wear, with finishes and textures that makeup lovers of all ages could pull off — not a big surprise, considering that Brooke is 49.

OK, first though, sad panda face. 🙁

The 15-pan Gravitas palette sold out in like two seconds online. Yesterday afternoon, I chatted with a MAC rep online who said that as of now, there are no plans (that she knew of) to restock additional palettes on maccosmetics.com.

Honestly, I’m not surprised it disappeared so quickly, as it contains some of MAC’s bestselling neutrals, like Soft Brown, Shroom, Satin Taupe and Carbon, as well as many new shades, all for $85, which is dramatically less than the $160 MAC normally charges for its 15-pan palettes. If you still have your eye on this one, a call to your closest MAC counter might be in order. Perhaps you can ask an associate to contact you when the palette arrives. I might even consider calling in every day until the official October 2 launch date.
