RiRi Hearts MAC Fall: A Quick Peek at Pointblack Liquidlast Liner

September 17th, 2013 by Karen 8 Comments

RiRi Hearts MAC: A Quick Peek at Pointblack Liquidlast Liner
Saying meow to Pointblack Liquidlast Liner ($21.50) from the new RiRi Hearts MAC Fall collection

Sometimes drawing that lil’ flick at the end of my cat eyeliner can be a pain, but that’s so not the case with Pointblack Liquidlast Liner from MAC’s new RiRi Hearts MAC Fall collection.

The skinny, flexible brush that comes with this liquid liner draws thin, precise lines, making cat eyes and cat eye flicks super easy to do.

Bust out your umbrella-ella-ella, because it’s raining more Rihanna-themed makeup this fall over at MAC.

The songstress and MAC take the stage later this month for an encore to her RiRi Hearts MAC summer collection with the new 20-piece RiRi Hearts MAC fall collection for eyes, cheeks and lips.

You known I love me my warm neutrals, so of course, the Her Cocoa Eye Shadow X 4 ($44 US, $52.50 CDN) caught my eye first. 😀

MAC Pro Longwear Eye Liner in Powerline Endows Your Cat Eyeliner Looks With More Meow!

September 11th, 2013 by Karen 26 Comments

MAC Powerline
Lower lash liner by MAC Powerline; cat lady sweater by Target

The sweater? What, this old thing? You like? Yeah, it’s from Target, and no, one does not have to be feline obsessed to wear it with cat eyeliner. In fact, if you are a cat lady makeup lover, it really helps drive home the point. 🙂

I have a special place in my heart for cat eyeliner (and cat sweaters)…

This pretty much sums up our entire relationship

A big part of this cat liner look, obvs, is the liner flick action on the upper lash lines, but what about the lower lash lines? What should we do there?

I suppose we could leave ’em bare, but where’s the fun in that?

MAC Powerline
Muted gold MAC Powerline

One way to infuse your lower lash and water lines with more meow is to line them with gold liner. Lately, to wear with my cat eye liner looks, I’ve been loving on MAC’s Pro Longwear Eye Liner in Powerline ($19.50). It adds just a little oomph without overpowering the whole look (I mean, because you don’t want to take away from that sweater, you know?).

Lightweight, Sheer MAC Prep + Prime Beauty Balm SPF 35 Now Available in Nine Gotta Wear Shades

September 2nd, 2013 by Karen 10 Comments

MAC Prep + Prime Beauty Balm SPF 35
New shade additions to the MAC Prep + Prime Beauty Balm SPF 35 line, $30 each

How was your weekend, babe? Mine was…educational.

It featured many fascinating factoids and interesting moments (not really), like last night I re-learned a lesson I’ve learned many times before — that it is not a good idea to watch horror/thriller/alien abduction movies immediately before going to bed.

And then on Saturday, I learned that Sam Edelman makes some killer comfy flats (I brought home a pair from the Nordstrom shoe sale).

Makeup-wise, I had a huge “Eureka!” moment while wearing MAC’s Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm SPF 35 ($30, available in a range of shades), MAC’s BB cream from their permanent line.

MAC Prep + Prime Beauty Balm SPF 35

I wore it both days over the weekend, along with a couple of lippies from the new MAC Retro Mattes collection, and discovered that it looks super cool with matte lips.

MAC Prep + Prime Beauty Balm SPF 35 Ingredients
Long list of ingredients…

Like opposites, they attract. On the one hand, you’ve got the slightly dewy, sheer luminosity of the BB Beauty Balm. On the other, the opaque, flat matte finish of a Retro Matte (or any matte lipstick, really). Put them together and BAM! — a really lovely contrast between uber-casual skin and formal matte lips.

I love experimenting with different finishes and levels of coverage, and pairings like this one are for me like wearing a motorcycle jacket with a sequined cocktail dress — unexpectedly great, unusual and a lil’ bit quirky.

Of course, you could use any BB cream, sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer for something like this, but MAC’s Prep + Prime BB Beauty Balm is a good candidate.

For Makeup That Goes the Distance, There’s the New Long-Wearing MAC Retro Matte Collection, Pro Longwear Paint Pots and Eye Liners

August 29th, 2013 by Karen 24 Comments

The New MAC Pro Longwear and Retro Matte collections
The New MAC Pro Longwear and Retro Matte collections

Forget flash-in-the-pan and fly-by-night colors that disappear faster than you can say, “I’m going to need years of therapy to recover from that Miley Cyrus performance.” The new Retro Matte and Pro Longwear collections are built to last with long-wearing lipsticks, lip liners, cream shadows and pencils ready and waiting to go the distance this fall.

The MAC Retro Matte Collection

Down-and-dirty deets on the new MAC Retro Matte Lipsticks, Pro Longwear Paint Pots and Eye Liners

MAC Retro Matte
All 8 of the new Lipsticks from the Retro Matte collection and five of the eight Pro Longwear Lip Pencils
  • Permanent or limited edition: Limited edition
  • Availability: Next week! They’ll be online starting the week of September 3, in North American MAC stores/counters September 12, and available some time in September at all international MAC locations.
  • Inspiration: Actually? Ruby Woo Lipstick’s matte texture and finish. MAC decided to increase the number of shades available in Ruby Woo’s ultra-flat matte finish.
  • Includes: eight matte Lipsticks ($15 US, $18 CDN each) and eight Pro Longwear Lip Pencils ($19.50 US, $23 CDN each)

As someone who experienced the ’90s firsthand and owned several MAC mattes over that time, I have mixed feelings about this encore of matte lips…

To their credit, they last a looong time, which I like. They barely break a sweat after six hours, even through meals, but dayum! — what’s with all the flakes?!

At least these new MAC Lipsticks don’t seem as drying as the old-school versions, based on the couple I wore today, but they definitely aren’t heavy with hydration. I probably won’t be wearing them daily, no matter what, because matte formulas like these usually leave my lips drier than the Sahara.

I gotta admit, though, that flat finish looks really cool…

Can. Not. Wait. to wear the bright pinks and reds with cat eyes this fall.

MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots and Pro Longwear Eye Liners

MAC Pro Longwear collection
All four of the Pro Longwear Eyeliners and four of 12 MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pots from the new Pro Longwear collection
  • Permanent or limited edition: Permanent
  • Availability: Available now online, and coming to North American stores and counters September 5; internationally some time next month.
  • Inspiration: Vibrant colors and long-wearing cream shadows and liners.
  • Includes: 12 Pro Longwear Paint Pots ($20 US, $24 CDN each) and four water-resistant Pro Longwear Eye Liners ($19.50 US, $23 CDN each). There’s also a 242 Shader Brush ($25 US, $30 CDN)

Oh, boy! I’m stoked about the liners and Perky Paint Pot, in particular. Remember it from 2008’s Fafi? Yeah, good times… (Wow, can you believe we’ve been together that long? HOLY CANNOLI!)

Bright Lips Are the Big Draw in the Illustrative MAC Antonio Lopez Lip Palettes

August 28th, 2013 by Karen 28 Comments

MAC Antonio Lopez: 3 Lips/Fuchsia in Candy Yum Yum
Wearing the new MAC Antonio Lopez: 3 Lips/Fuchsia palette lipstick in Candy Yum Yum

Bold lip lovers say what?! In your dreams, are your lips ever super saturated shades of red, pink or purple?

Heck, even if they aren’t, draw a big red Sharpie heart around September 12 on your calendar (or ask Siri to remind you), because that’s when the MAC Antonio Lopez collection lip palettes arrive.

MAC Antonio Lopez 3 Lips Nude Fuchsia Red Boxes
Oh! The boxes have the same design…

I’m pretty stoked about two of ’em — 3 Lips/Fuchsia and 3 Lips/Red. At least for me and my bold lip-lurving heart, they steal the limelight away from the 3 Lips/Nude palette.

If you like powerful pouts, watch out for 3 Lips/Fuchsia and 3 Lips/Red. Their smooth, super saturated colors do NOT mess around. Both palettes get mad love from me.

As for the Nude palette…

The Fabulously Disco Divalicious MAC Antonio Lopez Collection’s Eye and Face Palettes Will Draw You In

August 27th, 2013 by Karen 42 Comments

MAC Antonio Lopez: 6 Eyes/Bronze and Face/Coral
Wearing the new MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes palette in Teal on my eyes and Face palette in Coral on my cheeks

I am a girl. I am a girl with dreams.

Makeup dreams.

BIG, BOLD makeup dreams. Dreams of getting all dolled up exactly like the gal on this new MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes palette, and then going to Petco to buy kitty litter.

MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes
Haaay, gurl, haaay!

SO FABULOUSLY DISCO DIVALICIOUS.

Let’s see… I think I have a blue scarf around here somewhere, and some black earrings, and I’m thinking I could probably imitate the hair. Maybe.

Oh, but that crazy-@ss earring?! I’ll definitely have to improv that, since something tells me I probably wouldn’t be able to find it (easily) at Claire’s.

The makeup, though, I’ve got that covered, boo-boo, thanks to the MAC Antonio Lopez collection’s mix of eye, lip and cheek palettes.

The MAC Antonio Lopez collection

The MAC Antonio Lopez collection
A bevy of pretty palettes

The new collection struts into North American MAC stores, onto counters and online September 12, and arrives at international locales the same month (international babes, you might want to swing by your local counter to ask your fave MAC artist for a firm date).

Soooo…who IS this dude?

First thing I thought when I saw these palettes was, “Oh, hell yes!” The second thing was, “Who is Antonio Lopez?”

Antonio Lopez (February 11, 1943 — March 17, 1987) was a world-renowned fashion illustrator who’s work appeared in many top-tier glossies like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, as well as the style pages of papers like The New York Times. In addition to his artwork, he’s known for discovering many famous models, too, including Grace Jones and Jerry Hall.

The new MAC Antonio Lopez collection features some of his drawings, with each of the palettes decorated with one of his muses (MAC calls the ladies “Antonio’s Girls”).

MAC Antonio Lopez collection
Hello, ladies!

An afternoon with Antonio

This afternoon I told Tabs that I could only work a half day because I had a prior engagement with three eyeshadow palettes and the two face palettes. He grumbled and bit my nose. 🙂

Then, I crossed my fingers, did a disco dance (the Hustle, IF you must know), and hoped to find just as much beauty inside these palettes as out.

What did I find?

Well, the one eye palette I felt kind of “eh” about at first, Teal, turned out to be much more interesting than I thought.

MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes/Teal Palette
6 Eyes/Teal Palette

The first time I saw its colors, they didn’t quite make sense to me, but after I started buffing and blending, the mix of bright blue and green played well with the smokier olive, black, gray and light violet shades.

Now if I could only get rid of the fallout… Thank goodness, there’s only a little. If I were forced, cruelly, to choose just one of these three eye palettes to get down with, I’d choose Teal quicker than you could say “boogie-oogie-oogie.”
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+/A-

As for fallout issues with the other two eye palettes, Violet and Bronze, nope. None.

MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes/Bronze Palette

Violet’s pink and purple give it a foxy ’80s vibe, and I think that bottom row of gray, silver and black should satisfy my lust for smokey eyes (kind of reminds me of Prism by Hourglass). The cream shade in the upper right-hand corner, though? Not that inspiring, but I appreciate the contrast.

Wear Golden MAC Woodwinked Eye Shadow and Your Favorite Purple for a Pretty Party Eye

August 6th, 2013 by Karen 21 Comments

MAC Woodwinked on my lids and Becca Cabrera along the lower lash line
MAC Woodwinked + your fave purple liner = magic!

This is not a post about the marvelous MAC Woodwinked Eye Shadow, although it could be. In Jack Kerouac On the Road-style, I could scribe a novel on a single scroll of paper about its many marvelous traits and why you need it in your life.

More accurately, this is a post about the magic MAC Woodwinked makes when you pair it with a purple liner or eyeshadow. When shimmery golden Woodwinked meets a violet, the combo creates more magic than Harry Potter!

They’re one of my favorite dinner party pairings, perfect when I want to up my eye game but don’t want to spend all night getting ready.

Why MAC Woodwinked?

Well, why not? It’s freaking beautiful! 🙂 But if you’re unfamiliar with this warm, shimmery gold…

  1. It looks amazing with brown, green, hazel, gray and blue eyes.
  2. It’s softer than a tabby’s tum, pigmented and blends like a breeze.
  3. It goes well with just about every beige or brown I’ve ever seen.
  4. I love it so much that I haven’t taken a trip without it in at least five years.
  5. It’s freaking beautiful!

Becca Cabrera Eyeliner on my lower lash lines, MAC Blacktrack Fluidline on my upper lash lines and MAC In Extreme Dimension 3D Mascara on my lashes

Whenever I wear the combo above, I usually apply Woodwinked on my lids and a purple along my lower lash and water lines, but wearing purple on the upper lash and water lines totally works, too.

If I’m feeling fancy and/or have a little extra time, then I’ll do some thick cat liner on my upper lash lines, and put on a pair of false lashes like the MAC 33s.
