Deborah Lippmann Put the Glitter in Neutral for Spring 2011

March 29th, 2011 by Karen 31 Comments

Greetings, sweet thing, and happy Tuesday to ya. 🙂 Speaking of sweet things, have your eyes feasted upon the Deborah Lippmann spring collection yet? If not, get this: it has sprinkles!

The tiny two-piece release has been out for a while now (available at Nordstrom stores and also online), featuring whisper-light colors for those times when you’re in the mood for something sweet, but yet more reserved than jelly beans.

Glitter in the Air ($18) caught my attention. It’s a sheer light blue with flecks of pink and blue glitter swimming around in it. Before I tried it on, I expected more of a glitter-ific punch from it — something like last fall’s Bad Romance or Across the Universe, but it’s lower key than either of those shades.

I’m Bringing Jelly Beans to My China Glaze Island Escape

March 28th, 2011 by Karen 43 Comments

china glaze island escape

With a name like Island Escape, China Glaze’s new nail polish collection could be about bright, tropical colors, but the sugar fiend in me can’t help but see jelly beans in these bottles.

The six-piece summer collection (about $5 per bottle) features a rainbow of tropical candy colors — four shimmers (108 Degrees, Cha Cha Cha, Senorita Bonita and Blue Iguana), which require two coats to reach full opacity, and two creams (Papaya Punch and Electric Pineapple), which take three.

If you were wondering, yes, I did eat these jelly beans :), starting with the popcorn ones first (they’re my fave!).

Rescue Beauty Lounge Nail Polishes: Not Your Run-of-the-Mill Nail Brand

Robin of Beautyburg

A few of us are meeting at the Rescue Beauty Lounge. Destination: your living room. Robin of Beautyburg has the scoop in today’s guest post.

Have you tried Rescue Beauty Lounge?
Rescue Beauty Lounge (or RBL for short) owner and founder Ji Baek opened her first New York City nail salon in 1998 after being dissatisfied with the standards she felt she saw at other salons and spas. Today, RBL isn’t just a salon chain. It’s also a line of bath and body care products and, most notably, a unique brand of nail polish.

Before she opened her first salon, Ji wondered if she really wanted to be the cliché of a Korean nail salon owner, but what Ji saw was an opportunity to elevate nail salons and set a new bar in professional nail care. “You have a great concept,” her husband said, “I’ll be by your side and help you. You can’t go through life with ‘what ifs’.”

As a self-admitted germophobe, Ji designed her spas to standards of hospital-grade cleanliness, and her philosophy takes overall nail health to heart.

When creating her nail polishes, Ji wanted to set herself apart from other brands by bringing the same philosophy and discipline she brought to her salon to her nail polishes as well. She boasts that several lab technicians almost quit trying to meet her standards, which were for a long-wearing polish made without the the use of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), formaldehyde, toluene or animal testing.

Do Oui Love Essie and the Essie Spring 2011 French Affair Collection?

February 22nd, 2011 by Karen 95 Comments

Essie French Affair

The one time I visited France was part of a whirlwind European vacation with El Hub before we got married, and we rode the rails to get around, hustling from train station to train station in performance fleece and flannel.

I must have looked more like a hobo than a fashionable girl, burdened by the weight of my big red backpack, as I passed perfectly put-together French women on the streets, them with their scarves and perfume; me with my maps and dirty laundry.

I tried to soak up as much proximity glamor as possible, a feat I believe is also possible by osmosis, even though there’s very little (read: no) scientific evidence to back it up. (Persnickety science fun fact: technically it would probably be glamor through diffusion, not osmosis, since osmosis refers specifically to the movement of water molecules from a higher to lower concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.)

That trip was six years ago, and now my French glamor/glamour reserves are running dangerously low (like low-rise jeans for men), and it could be kismet that the Essie French Affair collection and I met at this intersection of my so-called life.

I’m told that Essie Weingarten, founder and president of the brand, was inspired to create the six limited edition polishes by actress Brigitte Bardot, the scorchingly hot French ’60s sex symbol and former French fashion model.

“I think every woman has a little Brigitte Bardot in her,” Weingarten said, “and this palette coaxes her out!”

Get Shattered with the China Glaze Crackle Collection

February 17th, 2011 by Karen 78 Comments

China Glaze designed their six new Crackle Glaze polishes to create a worn-in, desconstructed look for fingers and toes.

How it works: first, apply a coat of nail polish (shimmer, cream, matte, whateva!), and wait for it to dry. Then, add a layer or two of one of the China Glaze Crackle colors. In about five minutes, you’ll see the polish separate to form shattered patterns on the nail (I’m wearing a light gray cream beneath the Crackle colors in the pics below). Check it…

The Forecast Calls for Gray in Dior Vernis Gris City

February 8th, 2011 by Karen 42 Comments

dior vernis gris city

The new Dior Vernis Gris City polishes were built with busy urban babes in mind. Not only is the included brush so wide that I can cover an entire nail with it in three swipes, but the formula dries quicker than a fast-paced city life — two coats take me less than 10 minutes, tops.

Dior says that each of these $21 shades was inspired by fashion-forward cities around the world. Cities like…

  • NY 57th: A shimmery dark gray named after Dior’s New York boutique
  • Bond Street: A creamy deep bluish gray inspired by London’s famous fog
  • Gris Montiagne: A creamy dark gray named after the Paris address where the first Dior boutique opened back in 1946
