NARS Isolde Eye Duo in Action

October 1st, 2015 by Karen 25 Comments

nars isolde k1

I wasn’t playing the other day when I said I’ve been all about NARS Isolde lately. Both it and NARS Cordura (LOVE YOU, C!!!) have been two of my full-time eye makeup BFFs for weeks, and even though I’ve mostly gotten over this cold of mine and want to wear more makeup again, I still don’t have the patience to sit still for 45 minutes and blend six different teals till my fingers fall off, ya know?

nars isolde k

This week I’ve been using the timer on my iPhone in the morning to rein myself in. I set it for 25 minutes, and whatever I’m able to do in that time, that’s what I end up wearing for the day.

Before I even start, though, I keep all the basics, like foundation, mascara and concealer, etc., in a little box next to my desk so I don’t waste any time hunting stuff down. Then I also put whatever eye and lip products I plan to wear in the same box.

I like to spend the lion’s share of the 25 minutes on my eye makeup, so I’ll cut back on some things and spend less time on my skin, which is why more of my freckles are peeking through in these pics than usual.

These Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blushes Are My Latest Drugstore Beauty Infatuation

The Neutrogena Healthy Skin Blushes

Close your eyes, and imagine your favorite, coziest, most comfortable sweatshirt. How warm and soft it feels…

Now, you step out of the shower. Ooh! — the tiles are cold, and you reach over and grab your glorious sweatshirt, then pull it on over your head. Then you put your arms through the sleeves.

Ah… So soft and snuggly.

OK, basically, these powder blushes feel like that! 🙂

My goodness, they’re soft.

(How soft are they?)

Well, if you, like me, have clumsy Shrek hands early in the morning and you attempt to open one of these, try not to accidentally jab it with a nail, because you’ll probably take out a huge divot. That’s how incredibly creamy and soft they are.

According to Neutrogena, they have a gel base, which is supposed to make the application smoother.

4 Steps to Clearer Skin With the Neutrogena #LetsSolveIt Campaign

August 28th, 2015 by Karen 12 Comments

neutrogena-4-steps-k

Somewhere between trying to squeeze in as much outdoorsy time as possible in the second half of summer, a bunch of stressful side projects, a particularly bad bout of insomnia (I keep waking up around the Witching Hour and then can’t fall back asleep) and the steady stream of ice cream I’ve been eating after dinner (even though I know what happens when I have too much dairy), I’ve started breaking out.

It’s nothing too bad…yet (knocks on wood), definitely not as bad as the huge humdingers I get sometimes along my jawline. These are just little whiteheads on my chin and around the edge of my forehead, and a couple of body breakouts on my chest and booty.

Yes, girl, booty — specifically, my left butt cheek, if you must know.

Is that TMI? Probably, but it’s not like I’m the first person (or the last) to get a painful pimple on their bum.

Anyway! When Neutrogena and Walgreens asked if I was down to switch up my acne-fighting game with their #LetsSolveIt campaign and take the quiz at SolveMyAcne.com, I thought, “Good timing!”

I’ve had great luck with Neutrogena skin care over the years, and I dig Walgreens (I used to go there on my breaks every day when I worked in SF), so I said “sure!”

Getting back into the swing of things at school after summer break is stressful enough. Who needs the ADDED stress of a bad breakout? Get expert skin care recs with the Neutrogena #LetsSolveIt campaign by taking the Acne-Fighting Quiz at SolveMyAcne.com, and feel fabulously confident in clearer skin.

First step: the quiz. And it’s not one of those quizzes that they say is only going to take two minutes but ends up taking 20. It really is just a handful of easy questions.

Like so…

Based on my answers, here are the four products the quiz recommended for me and my combo dry/oily skin:

Nike Women’s Half Marathon Race-Day Essentials

October 17th, 2014 by Karen 43 Comments

Nike Women's Half Marathon Race-Day Essentials
Nike Women’s Half Marathon Race-Day Essentials

Two more days.

TWO MORE DAYS! Roughly 39 hours (give or take) until I hit the ground running, literally, for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco with Team Neutrogena on Sunday.

I’ve been training for the past six weeks, and I’m actually feeling really good about this. By no means am I a hardcore athlete, but I tried to do everything I could to help myself make it through race day.

That’s in stark contrast to the last time I ran a half marathon about 10 years ago, when I did everything wrong. I was in tears when I crossed the finish line of that race because I was in so much pain (one word: chafing). Plus, I think I was just mentally unprepared for it.

This time, I feel ready! I was careful not to overtrain, which is something else that bit me in the @ss last time. Plus, I added cross-training (pushups and Jillian Michaels DVDs) and ate the food I was supposed to eat when I was supposed to eat it. I also took my rest and recovery days seriously.

Via nike.com

So, yeah. I’m excited about Sunday, and not just because there will be San Francisco firemen in tuxedos handing out Tiffany necklaces at the finish line. 🙂

I’ve also been preparing/vetting all of my race-day essentials, which, of course include beauty products, because you know I couldn’t go 13.1 miles without doing a little something-something.

Nike Women's Half Marathon Race-Day Essentials
1) Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes, 2) Cle de Peau Perfect Lash Mascara, 3) Tom Ford Brow Sculptor and 4) NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Yu

1. Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes

Also known as “my improv shower.” I’m putting a couple of these in a plastic bag and bringing them with me so I can wipe off some of the sweat immediately after the race. I’m also keeping a pack in the car for the drive home, just in case I still feel sticky. $8.99 for a reusable case with a pack of 25 towelettes. Available now at drugstores, Ulta and online.

2. Cle de Peau Perfect Lash Mascara

UGH! — so expensive, but so, so good… If there’s any mascara that can handle 13.1 miles and buckets of sweat, it’s this one. Waterproof, smudge-proof, budge-proof, and it delivers mad crazy length and separation. $50, and available now at Neiman Marcus and neimanmarcus.com.

3. Tom Ford Brow Sculptor in Espresso

Technically, Tom Ford Brow Sculptor in Espresso is not a waterproof product, but it may as well be. I’ve worn it in 105-degree heat, and it didn’t move, so I expect it to withstand the mileage. $44, available now at Tom Ford counters and online.

4. NARS Mini Satin Lip Pencil in Yu

I may live to regret this…but life is short! So what the hell! 🙂 I got it into my head to wear hot pink lipstick during the race because 1) it really does make everything better, and 2) because it matches my CW-X Bra.

Call me crazy.

NARS Mini Satin Lip Pencil in Yu is one of five lip pencils in the $49 NARS Digital World set, coming November 1 to Sephora and sephora.com.

Nike Women's Half Marathon Race-Day Essentials
5) CW-X Bra, 6) Thorlo Socks, 7) Tri-berry Gu, 8) Roo Sport and 9) TUNES!

Currently on the Bathroom Shelf: Fourth of July Sun Protection Products From Neutrogena, L’Occitane, Vichy, Avene and Philip Kingsley

July 1st, 2014 by Karen 7 Comments

Sun protection from Neutrogena, L'Occitane, Philip Kingsley, Vichy and Avene
Sun protection from Neutrogena, L’Occitane, Philip Kingsley, Vichy and Avene

It’s almost Fourth of July, and fireworks are completely legal in my bathroom!

Wait — that was weird.

By fireworks, I’m referring to exciting sun protection products, like these things currently celebrating their independence on my bathroom shelf. 🙂

Neutrogena Age Shield Face Oil-Free Lotion SPF 110

When a two-digit SPF ratings just isn’t enough, there’s Neutrogena Age Shield Face Oil-Free Lotion SPF 110, which I’ve been using every day for about a month.

The oil-free formula is fabulous to the max! Not only is it easy to apply makeup on top of it, but it doesn’t pill up into little flecks, or otherwise behave strangely no matter what I wear it with — primer, foundation, whatever else.

Best of all, it’s not greasy! — so when I put it on my neck, it doesn’t feel all sticky and gross. For $12.99, you get a 3-ounce tube, and it’s available now at drugstores, Ulta and online.

L’Occitane Jenipapo Gel-Protecting Body Jelly Milk SPF 20

I like L’Occitane’s Jenipapo Protecting Body Jelly Milk SPF 20 for a couple of reasons.

First, the name. Jenipapo.

That’s pure win right there. 🙂

As for the formula, I like it for light SPF protection when I only plan to catch a few rays while running errands or going for a quick walk.

It’s a lightweight, moisturizing sunscreen lotion that smells ah-maze-balls! It starts with notes of watermelon, orange, pineapple, frangipani and Lily of the Valley, and dries down to a smooth vanilla musk.

It launched last May with a whole slew of skin care, fragrance and sun protection products in L’Occitane’s Au Brasil line, a range inspired by the fabulous foliage of Brazil.

Jenipapo, a fruit tree found in Brazil’s Cerrado tropical savanna, is said to be very moisturizing.

Double Duty Drugstore Beauty! Multi-Talented Makeup From Neutrogena

April 15th, 2014 by Karen 9 Comments

Multitasking makeup products from Neutrogena
Wearing a few double-duty products from Neutrogena! — Crease Proof Shadow in Improper Copper as a highlighter on my upper cheekbones and down the bridge of my nose, Healthy Skin Blends Bronzer in Sunkissed as an eyeshadow on my lower lash lines, MoistureSmooth Color Stick in Healthy Peach as a blush on my cheeks, and Nourishing Long Wear Liquid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 20 in Warm Beige as a concealer under my eyes

It’s true.

You really do learn something new every day — like yesterday I learned that a ton of Neutrogena makeup products actually double as…well, they double. They’re multitasking, which is super cool, for one, because a) they’re drugstore, so they’re totally affordable, and b) if you’re traveling somewhere or just want to lighten your makeup load, it’s always nice to have a product that can do a bunch of things.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Amy Oresman broke it down for me in Nashville yesterday as I sat (OMG!) in her makeup chair. She just broke it down, man. She had some great product recommendations from the Neutrogena line, like the brand’s Crease Proof Eye Shadows…

1. Crease Proof Eye Shadows in Stay Golden and Improper Copper ($8.49 each)

Amy Oresman
Improper Copper in my crease…

There are two she really loves — Stay Golden and Improper Copper. Stay Golden she compared to, basically, Nylon or Shroom Eye Shadow from MAC, but in cream form.

Cream shadows with a built-in primer, these were designed for lids, but they work on other parts of the face, too — especially as a highlighter. Amy will take either one, Stay Golden or Improper Copper, and apply it directly to the skin. Then she buffs it down with a foundation brush.

On me, because I have a deeper skin tone, she used Improper Copper, which is kind of like a coppery gold with subtle shimmer.

Amy Oresman has worked her makeup magic on a multitude of makeup-loving mavens, including Madonna, Heidi Klum, Victoria Beckham, Hayden Panettiere, Vanessa Hudgens, Emma Roberts and Kate Bosworth. “When it comes down to it,” she says, “we all want the same thing — to look and feel beautiful.”

She applied it directly from the stick, too, right into the crease of my eyes, and then brought it out to my upper cheekbones, still just using the stick. Then she blended it all in with a foundation brush for a super soft, really glowing highlight.

And you can use it on other parts of the face — wherever you would apply a traditional highlight, like down the bridge of the nose, Cupid’s bow, that kind of thing.

Stay Golden works great for all skin tones, but it rocks the Casbah on fair skin; Amy recommended Improper Copper for medium and darker skin tones.

Yay, so that’s one thing.

But there’s more… 🙂

Sometimes Amy also likes to rub the stick shadows in her palm to get some product in there, and then she’ll mix that with a foundation. Yesterday she did that with Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Makeup Foundation, a liquid foundation, mixed those together in her palm, and just applied on me where she wanted more of a shimmery, dewy finish.

So, yeah, that’s one majorly multitasking product in the Neutrogena makeup line.

Amy also recommends the MoistureSmooth Color Sticks, which are first and foremost sheer lip balms, and I love these.

2. Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks ($8.49 each)

Amy Oresman
Amy applying Healthy Peach MoistureSmooth Color Stick Gloss on my cheeks as a blush

I use Fresh Papaya. Love it, wear it all the time, but what I didn’t know until yesterday was that these also double as cream blushes. You can put them on top of foundation, powder, bare skin.

Amy will apply the Color Sticks directly on the cheeks, on the apples of the cheeks, and then just blend that in with a foundation brush to give a nice, sort of light, sheen to the cheeks with a pop of color, and then, if you don’t want to deal with finding a coordinating lip color, you just take that same Color Stick and apply it on your lips.

Next up, Healthy Skin Blends Bronzer in Sunkissed. One of three Healthy Skin Blends Bronzers from Neutrogena — these are the ones with the little squares inside the palettes. Amy calls Sunkissed a great eyeshadow palette that nobody knows about.

8 Minutes With Hayden Panettiere: The Nashville Star Talks Makeup, Beauty and Style

April 14th, 2014 by Karen 21 Comments

With Neutrogena Beauty Ambassador, Actress Hayden Panettiere
With Neutrogena Beauty Ambassador, actress Hayden Panettiere

I may or may not have come this close to asking Hayden Panettiere to harmonize with me when I interviewed her this afternoon. It was either that, or ask her if she would do some cheerleading moves with me.

Not that I’m a cheerleader… I just thought that might be kind of rad. Save the cheerleader, save the world?

You might know Hayden from this little show she used to do called Heroes. She currently stars on the hit show Nashville, where she plays singer/country rock star Juliett Barnes. Hayden, who lives in Nashville now where the show is filmed, is also a Neutrogena Beauty Ambassador.

We chatted about her must-have beauty products and a frightening thing called “tarantula lashes.” And I even got her to speak some Russian for me!

No, not as random as it sounds. 🙂 She’s engaged to world champion boxer Wladimir Klitschko, and she’s learning the language now.

I didn’t have a lot of time with her, but I totally enjoyed every minute. She was really down to earth and cute and completely normal, which shouldn’t come as a surprise at all, but with the media nowadays and the way people are often portrayed, you just never know. She also has the most beautiful skin.

Hayden and Karen
Oh, hai!

Thanks for the question ideas on Twitter and MBB. I tried to ask as many as I could.

Hayden Panettiere talks makeup, beauty and style

Karen: I’m curious; have you noticed, like, how is style here in Nashville different from L.A. style? Has it affected your style at all as well?

Hayden: The style in Nashville is pretty laid back, and it’s also — it can also be kind of hipster.

Karen: Hipster.

Hayden: Yeah, and funky, and I love the way the girls dress here. You see a lot of fun cute little dresses and little boots, like what you’re wearing [she gestures toward my cat print dress, which I LOVE], but people tend to go a little more casual here.

I see a lot of cute hats, and I’m a big fan of hats, so it’s almost kind of allowed me to, um, re-embrace my personal style. Because in L.A., I felt like I had to put a lot more effort into it, because you know that you’re gonna be met outside your front door with cameras, and the topic of conversation is going to be your outfit or what you’re wearing, ya know, all that good stuff. So you get a little gun shy.

I’ve always been more of a tomboy and more laid back and more casual and comfortable. Over the years, I’ve definitely experimented with things, but it fits me here. It suits me here, ’cause it feels comfortable.

Karen: So what’s your everyday makeup routine like? You mentioned that you’re a tomboy, but are you more, like, minimalist makeup, or a glam girl, or somewhere in between?

Hayden: That’s another thing that’s kind of changed is that I’ve definitely stopped wearing quite as much makeup. I had times in L.A. where I wouldn’t wear any makeup at all, either, but when we went out to dinners and stuff like that, it was great to have fun with it, to dress up, to do more makeup, and when you see that here, it’s pretty rare that you see massive quantities of makeup here. It’s very natural, and I love that.

Can’t get enough of Hayden? Check out Neutrogena’s All Day Beauty series, which includes Hayden’s hair and beauty essentials, along with videos and additional tips.

I have definitely had my fun, and sometimes I’ll do a great nude eye with just a pop of red lipstick or, ya know, a more smoky eye with a nude lip, but my day in, day out look is, ya know, mascara, and in the summertime, it’ll be mascara and a little blush and lips, and that’s why one of my favorite products are these [Neutrogena] Moisturesmooth Color Sticks.

[Yesterday] I had about 10 of these in the bottom of my purse in every color you can think of. We love to use them on our lips, but we also like to put them on our cheeks and use them as a blush, and it’s great because sometimes I don’t want to carry this big purse, and I wanna wear, ya know, just shove my credit card, my I.D. and a little touchup in my jacket pocket.

This is perfect, ’cause it’s two-in-one, and, I mean, it certainly fits in a clutch, like what we wear down the red carpet sometimes, ’cause we all know that those teeny tiny bags are not quite functional. They’re fashion, not function.

Karen: Oh, yeah. Do you have a favorite color from the MoistureSmoothes?

Hayden: I love Juicy Peach. Posey? Posey is the blush/bronzer duo. There’s also a red-red, and then there’s almost like a purply one, but I like all of them. It just depends, and you can layer them, too, really easily, like, I’ll do a nude, and then I’ll take the red-red one and go along the inside of my lips so that it almost looks like you just sucked on a popsicle or a lollipop. It’s a great look.

Karen: I’ll have to try that.

Hayden: Yeah, it’s great.

A few of Hayden's favorite things (from the left): Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes, Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Makeup and Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks
A few of Hayden’s favorite things (from the left): Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes, Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Makeup and Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks

Karen: Besides the MoistureSmooth Sticks, what are you —

Hayden: And mascara.

Karen: What are your other must-haves — the things that you would freak out about if they were discontinued?

Hayden: Well I kind of love this [Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara] because I’m blonde, so I have blonde lashes, so I look about 12 if I don’t have mascara on. They won’t let me in anywhere! [Laughing] And it’s been great for my lashes because a lot of the time we wear false eyelashes all day long, and it’s so drying to put fake eyelashes on, and then when you pull them off your eyelashes come out.

A lot of mascaras will give you tarantula, crispy, crunchy lashes. But for the first time I’ve actually been able to not wear any fake eyelashes, and even on the show, it’s high def, and you can see it. If you’re paying attention, you can see when I am and when I’m not, and recently I’ve stopped wearing fake eyelashes even during performance scenes because my eyelashes have been allowed to grow, and they’ve gotten really thick and long.

Karen: I bet it’s kind of liberating not to have to wear them. They can be a pain.

Hayden: I mean, they can be a blast; they really can, but you want to be able to have the choice.

Karen: Yeah, for sure.

Hayden: And then this stuff [Neutrogena Long Wear Liquid Makeup] has saved my skin because we work for 12-16 hour days, and we’re doing performance scenes or sweating, and then we’re putting powder on because we’re shiny, and then we’re putting more base makeup on. Getting your makeup to last 12-16 hours is a feat, but the Long Wear allows my skin to breathe all day long, and I know that it’s healthy for my skin. I don’t have to worry about my pores getting as clogged. With HD TV, like — everything’s in HD, and you can see everything.

Karen: It doesn’t mess around.

12 Days of Giveaways, Day 12: 7 Ways to Win a $1,560 Louis Vuitton Salina PM Bag (Ends Friday)

December 29th, 2013 by Karen 890 Comments

12 Days of Giveaways on Makeup and Beauty Blog

12 Days of Giveaways on Makeup and Beauty Blog
A different Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway every day for 12 days, sponsored by Neutrogena

I have been lusting after and dreaming about this bag for more than a year, I kid you not.

First time I ever saw it in person, a lightning bolt of love struck me right in the heart.

BOOM!

boomI remember it like it was yesterday…

I was in San Francisco waiting to meet a friend for brunch in front of a restaurant in the Marina on a sunny day. As she walked up, my eyes locked like lasers on her purse — the Louis Vuitton Salina PM.

Like the accessories weirdo I am, I kept sneaking peeks at it through the meal. Every time my friend looked away, I’d study her purse. It was almost impossible not to!

I totally ignored my eggs and banana pancakes (two of my favorite things in the world). All I could think was, “Oh, mah gawd, Becky! I need that purse!!”

Uh…then I found out that it’s $1,560, which is A LOT of cat treats. Consequently, the bag continues to elude me. Plus, Tabs has an exclusivity contract with LV that gives him exclusive rights to carry/wear the brand here in the offices of Tabs the Cat Industries, LLC.

Oh, well. Don’t ask me how he secured that gig. He never tells me anything. 🙂

But then Neutrogena offered to host this giveaway, and of course I jumped at the chance. A bag like this? YES! Maybe I won’t be able to tote the Salina PM around my town, but perhaps you will around yours.

This is by far the largest single prize in Makeup and Beauty Blog history — a $1,560 value — and I’m pretty jazzed. The winner of this bag will be a very, very lucky gal (or guy!).
