Lush’s New Ro’s Argan Conditioner Works Like a Hair Conditioner for Your Bod

December 1st, 2011 by Karen 12 Comments

lush ro's argan body conditioner (3)

I’ve been applying body lotion since the tender age of 12. Day in, day out, just me, my perpetually parched skin and a tube of moisturizer going to work on each other like it’s a job, yo, like cubicle BFFs 4-ever.

And after all of those hundreds of tubes and jars, I think I even figured something out. For the most part, with a few exceptions, lotion is pretty much lotion, and it’s rare when a brand actually shakes things up.

That, fellow beauty lurver, is why I’m smitten with Lush’s new Ro’s Argan Conditioner ($29.95). It actually makes moisturizing easier than usual, faster than normal, and dare I say it? — kinda fun.

Lush calls it a “body conditioner,” but no, it doesn’t come with a Jillian Michaels DVD (I wish!). 🙂 What it does come with are moisturizing ingredients like cocoa butter and argan oil.

It’s a rich lotion designed to be used in the shower on wet skin. After washing and rinsing, I apply it from the neck down, where it leaves a thick, but not sticky, hydrating film.

SIDE NOTE: Now I know what a pan feels like when it gets greased up with butter! But(ter) seriously, Ro’s Argan Conditioner is a little greasy…but not annoyingly so. For the record, though, it does leave behind a moisturizing layer/film that remains after rinsing and towel drying.

Because my skin is so dry that it makes the Atacama Desert look like Waialeale on Kauai, I went into this pretty skeptical. I really didn’t think Ro’s would do much for me at all, and I didn’t think the results would justify the price.

But hold up! — wait a minute. Ro’s turns out to work quite well. It hydrates most of my trouble spots, and that includes my dry @ss shins. I still feel like I could use a little more help on my chapped elbows and feet…but there I can’t say I’m surprised, because those are my most troubled spots.

It Takes Urban Decay Naked2 to Make a Thing Go Right… It Takes Urban Decay Naked2 to Make It Outta Sight

December 1st, 2011 by Karen 117 Comments

urban decay naked2 palette

I wanna rock right now.
I’m K-Dog and I came to get down.
My cat’s internationally known,
And he’s known to rock the microphone.

‘Cause I get stupid, I mean outrageous,
My love for UD Naked2 is contagious.
These shadows are winners, no, they’re not losers,
With 12 shades total for every neutral user.

Ladies love it, girls adore it,
I mean even the ones who never saw it like…
The way that the shades just flow.
The reason why, UD steals the show,
So let’s go, ’cause…

It takes Naked2 to make a thing go right…
It takes Naked2 to make it outta sight.

Barista Beauty by Lush with New Lush Latte Lip Tint

November 29th, 2011 by Karen 17 Comments

lush latte lip tint (4)

When I heard about Lush’s new Latte Lip Tint ($6.95), the first thing I did was lick my lips and moan, “Mmm…” Then, I imagined what it might look like and pictured a muddy, flat brown.

Wait — that doesn’t sound appealing, does it?

Ah, but then I tried it on. 🙂

Lush may not have done their latest lippie justice by referring to the color as coffee. It’s a thin, smooth, non-sticky tint that goes on looking like a pigmented, frosty golden bronze, and I think it’s outright lovely on the lips.

More often than not, Lush’s flavors and scents aren’t exactly subtle, and Latte Lip Tint also packs quite a wallop. I like the scent, which reminds me of coffee and cocoa butter, but the flavor? Let me put it this way: Starbucks, it ain’t (unless Starbucks sells a vanilla latte made with a shot of wax).

You’re Sheer to Find A Season’s Worth of Pretty in Clinique’s New Holiday Palette for Eyes, Lips and Cheeks

November 28th, 2011 by Karen 43 Comments

clinique a season's worth of pretty (15)

How much pretty did Clinique squeeze into their new 13-piece holiday palette for eyes, lips and cheeks? Well, judging by the name they gave it, I’d say around “A Season’s Worth.”

The cool tones and neutral shades in the new $37 palette have a distinctly festive feel that reminds me of caroling and getting snuggles from Tabs. They’re the kinds of colors I can see myself wearing with scarves, boots and mittens wrapped around mugs of piping hot cocoa, yet they seem timeless enough to make the transition from winter to spring, and maybe even summer.

More than 20 years ago (egad!) I followed Clinique through a gateway that led to the World of Makeup! There, I found wonders like MAC and NARS, and yet even with such tantalizing temptations teasing my senses, I regularly return to my roots with Clinique.

I’ve never strayed for long from their easy, classic approach to color, even though their makeup, in particular their eyeshadows and blushes, hasn’t always been what I’d call cutting edge.

The reason? Because they make things easy. Sometimes I just think it’s quicker to go with Clinique’s sheer-to-medium pigment than with something richer from someone else. That, and when I wear Clinique, I know that I won’t have to worry about looking overdone.

To fill a Season’s Worth of Pretty, the palette comes with five Butter Shine Lipsticks, four Color Surge Eye Shadow Soft Shimmers, one Colour Surge Eye Shadow Super Shimmer and three Blushing Blush Powder Blushes — most of them cool and neutral colors, but I also see a smattering of warm shades. On my NC42 tan, several of the blushes and eyeshadows apply with sheer-to-medium intensity, which usually says to me that they’ll pop even brighter on gals with lighter skin.

I’m Completely Happy with Clinique’s Complete Happiness Fragrance Set for the Holidays

November 26th, 2011 by Karen 13 Comments

clinique complete happiness (3)

’tis the season for sets of tiny perfume bottles (YAY!), but not all of them are created equal. This year Clinique has one of the cutest and most practical sets in town.

Each of the five travel-size 0.24-fl. oz. bottles in the new Complete Happiness Set ($37 for the set) fit easily into most makeup bags, and all of them have — wait for it — a spray top spritzer! 🙂

I know it’s a weird thing to get fired up about, but I collect mini perfume bottles like these, and most of them just have an open mouth on the bottle. I’ve had a couple of those pop open in my makeup bags over the years, spilling perfume everywhere, so a small touch like an atomizer top makes these from Clinique that much more practical.

But what about the scents? Well, I’m glad you asked.

The Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss Favorites Travel Exclusive Kit Makes a Good Travel Buddy

November 24th, 2011 by Karen 9 Comments

bobbi brown lip gloss favorites travel exclusive (4)

I’ve been loving and watching a lot of Pan Am lately, and I can’t believe there was a time when flying was actually considered glamorous.

That’s so crazypants! Last flight I took a flight I felt like I was being herded around like cattle…

Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss Favorites Travel ExclusiveOh, well. There are still some perks to air travel, like airport travel exclusives — cool hard-to-find makeup pieces and kits like the new Bobbi Brown Lips Lip Gloss Favorite Kit, available now at select airport terminals and duty-free stores (travel exclusives are sometimes tough to track down).

The new three-piece kit comes with full-size 0.24-oz. versions of some of Bobbi’s most popular shades, specifically Tutu (a bluish pink), Pink Blossom (a sheer bright pink) and Ruby Sugar (a soft red).

Price varies by location, but kits like these usually constitute a savings over buying the products individually.

Bobbi recently upsized her glosses, so these are a little bigger than they used to be, and started using doe-foot applicators, and that’s another reason why I give these a thumbs up. The unflavored, lightly scented glosses, which smell like yummy brown sugar, feel thick, but aren’t sticky, and they last for hours on my lips.

Big fan over here, especially on days when I don’t really want to fuss with my makeup.

With the Estée Lauder Modern Chic Face Palette Travel Exclusive Kit, the In-Flight Movie Is Sheer To Be Good

November 24th, 2011 by Karen 6 Comments

Estee Lauder Modern Chic Face Palette

Wait — so hunting for limited edition travel makeup exclusives at the airport doesn’t count as cardio? Well heck, I think it should. Hauling my carry-on bag from gate to gate, searching through each and every duty-free store to locate hard-to-find makeup goodies, must burn at least a few hundred calories.

I know I’d gladly break a sweat looking for the new Estée Lauder Modern Chic Face Palette. The new travel exclusive palette includes four powder eyeshadows, a powder blush, one face powder, one full-size lipstick and a travel-size mascara and eyeliner, all tucked away in a stylish midnight blue zippered case.

Live Clean Baby, an Eco-Friendly Cruelty-Free Line, Arrives at Walgreens Stores

November 23rd, 2011 by Karen 14 Comments

Anonymous sources on Sesame Street have confirmed that rubber ducky makes bath time lots of fun, and with the new Live Clean Baby line of cruelty-free drugstore baby products, the whole bath time experience is likely to improve. 🙂

Yup, for the moms and grandmothers among us — and for those of us who just like soothing, gentle drugstore products in adorable packaging — the six-piece Live Clean Baby collection has made its way from Canada to U.S. Walgreens stores.

The collection includes a Tearless Shampoo & Wash, Moisturizing Baby Bath, Moisturizing Bar Soap, Non-Petroleum Jelly, Diaper Ointment, and a Lotion, each one priced at $7.99.

I went through a phase in high school when I was obsessed with Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo and Lotion. They were just so uncomplicated and gentle, and that’s also how I feel about these.

Tabs, as the current “baby” of our family, approves of my use of this line, as the products don’t contain any animal ingredients and weren’t tested on animals. They’re mostly plant-derived and free of many of the harsher synthetic chemicals commonly found in drugstore bath products and lotions, like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), diethanolamine (DEA), parabens and phthalates. The company claims that 98%-100 of the ingredients are plant-derived.
